Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.” Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city that focuses on giving opportunities to underserved youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice
him. In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood,” said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change.” Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’” recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he would visit Luvice upon his return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it,” said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering.” Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor,” said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for himself and for his two children. A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a
noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.” Luvice and Kiefer began meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification,” Luvice stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change,” Luvice admitted. “When you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing.” Luvice noted that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on

curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them,” said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something.” “Nate has done the full 180 degrees from where he was to where he is now,” said Kiefer. “I have never seen anyone else give up what he had to give up to get there.” Luvice agreed, noting that he has no fear of the future. “I am not afraid to move forward,” he said. “The mentors all build each other up.” Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. the edges of the parking lot where visitors in their cars could stop. “(Families) do a short activity at each (station),” explained Fitzwater, who said that some of the activities included voting for a favorite Christmas activity or Christmas movie. At another station, visitors could guess the number of bows on a giant present. Pete the Corgi, who was dressed as a reindeer for the event, and a person in a Grinch costume greeted guests. “As they drive through, they are also (taking part in) a scavenger hunt looking for things that are hidden around in the grass and with the inflatables,” said Fitzwater. included an elephant and several incarnations of Santa, including him riding in a race car, flying a plane with moving propellers, and being pulled from the chimney by a reindeer. Several of those manning the stations wore pajamas in honor of the Pancakes and Pajamas theme. At Fitzwater’s station, bags containing craft items and other age-appropriate activities for each family were handed out. “We ask parents to take photos of them doing the activities to share,” said Fitzwater. The next to the last station featured Three Cords Bound band playing Christmas tunes. “The band plays every year, so they were happy to perform outside,” said Fitzwater. The final station featured
“We wanted to make the season bright for the families and keep them all safe,” said Alisha Fitzwater, one of the organizers of the Gigi’s Playhouse Drive-Through Christmas event that was held on Dec. 5 in the parking lot at GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, located at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. Originally, GiGi’s had planned to hold its annual Pancakes and Pajamas event on that day at Bright Side Opportunities Center in Lancaster. To keep the event safe, organizers had scheduled three different sessions to limit occupancy. Each session was to include a visit with Santa and a live band playing Christmas music. In early December, though, with numbers related to COVID-19 infections rising, Fitzwater said the team decided to put efforts into creating a drive-through, contactless experience at GiGi’s Playhouse that allowed for social distancing for the 40 families that planned to attend. “We had a lot of businesses donate, so we could have the activity bags for all the families,” Fitzwater said, adding that visitors were of all ages. Fitzwater said about eight Three Cords Bound played Christmas music in the stations were set up around parking lot at GiGi’s Playhouse for 40 families that visited eight stations from their cars.
a visit with Santa Claus. “We tried to think of things the kids could enjoy and give them something they could look at,” said Fitzwater. More information about GiGi’s Playhouse may be found by visiting www.gigis playhouse.org/lancaster or searching for “GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster” on Facebook.

Center Seeks Nominations
(717) 653-9580
The review process includes the provision of policy manuals, mission and value statements, and other procedural documents by each nominee. It also includes an employee survey and a virtual or in-person site visit from trained site visitors who are members of the local business community. Additionally, the center partners with Franklin & Marshall College students in a Corporate Responsibility class, with students providing in-depth research on each nominee. All the information collected is then compiled into a multipage report, which is provided to an anonymous selection
committee made up of business owners and industry leaders within the Lancaster County community. After deliberation, the committee selects the award recipient. An evening awards ceremony honors all nominees and announces the recipient. This event is currently scheduled for Thursday, July 22, 2021. Nominations can be submitted to the center until 5 p.m. on Jan. 15. They may be completed at https://scclanc.org/ethics -in-business/ethics-in-business -nomination-form. Fenner Acquires Maker Of Keyless Locking Devices BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For fellowship, food and fun, head to Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Dec. 19. The church will hold a drivethrough live Nativity and free Christmas meal for pickup between 2 and 4 p.m. “The meal is an annual tradition,” said pastor Blaine Wenger. “We had to change some things this year, but we didn’t want to give this up. It was important for us to do this for our community.” While the meal is traditionally a sit-down dinner, shifting to takeout-only was necessary this year, he noted, adding, “We’re still offering a great meal of ham and baked potatoes, green beans and dessert.” With the church needing to change the format of its meal, the congregation took the
opportunity to add something new. “This year, we’ll be having a drive-through Nativity with five different stations,” Wenger stated. “Visitors will be able to hear and see the Christmas story with live music and with live animals.” The Christmas meal is always a popular event with the public, he said. “Last year, about 350 people came for the meal,” he remarked. “We want the community to know we are here for them. We want to share the message of Jesus with them and focus on everything Christmas is about.” While reservations are required for the meal, anyone is invited to come to the drive-through Nativity, Wenger noted. The meal reservation deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 16. To make a reservation, readers may call 717-665-4499.

Fenner Precision Polymers of Manheim, a Michelin Group Company focused on reinforced polymer technology, recently announced the acquisition of MAV S.p.A., a European supplier of keyless locking devices (KLDs), shrink discs, rigid couplings and other metal products. Strong potential growth, market share gains and an opportunity to leverage the many advantages associated with a global supply chain are among reasons cited for the acquisition. No employee redundancies or loss of roles are anticipated because of the agreement. According to Jack Krecek, divisional managing director, Fenner Precision Polymers MAV will continue operating under the same brand, while also gaining access to a global sales force with considerable client relationships. For years Fenner Precision Polymers worked to re-establish a previous relationship between MAV and Fenner Drives BLOC Keyless Bushings. The original partnership helped establish the KLD market in North America. Readers may learn more

The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour. A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, inthe-moment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers. The only thing a customer must have in their vehicle to enjoy the contactless option is an FM radio. There is a fee per car. People

cafeteria, she broke down. The family ahead of her in the checkout line did what they could to console Carmina, as they also had a child in the NICU. “I get it. We’re here, the other parents told Carmina while paying for her coffee. That family took their child home while Lucas lingered. He was finally released in late January 2017. In the four years since, Carmina has encountered that family several times, and she is happy to exchange updates on their children, both of whom are thriving. Carmina also wants to make sure other NICU parents know they are not alone. Following the example of church friends who donated care packages after their own NICU experience two years ago, Carmina crowdsourced support for kits that she, Ryan, and Lucas presented at the WBH NICU on Lucas’ fourth birthday. The kits contained Stroopies, cloth masks, handknit newborn hats, scrunchies, keychains, lip gloss, hand cream, facial lotion, makeup wipes, tissues, gift cards for Hot Z Pizza, and packs of encouraging Scripture verses. Carmina hopes to make this a yearly tradition. “I want to give back in one way or another. (The NICU) was such a big impact on our lives and on Lucas’, she said. “When I hear of other moms going through it, I get it. I was there. As hard as it was, it makes me appreciate how life is so precious and how fragile it is. It’s just amazing to watch a baby fight for his life. I make a big deal out of milestones because it could have been different.
