A Chance To Meet Mod Betty By Ann Mead Ash
“I’ve been following (Mod Betty’s) adventures online for a year or two and really like what she does,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. When Van Brookhoven learned that Betty, whose real name is Beth Lennon, was available to speak in Lititz, he jumped at the opportunity to schedule her. Mod Betty will speak and sign books at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, courtesy of the Lititz Historical Foundation, on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. The presentation, dubbed “Must-See Roadside Attractions of Central PA,” will be free, and the public is invited to attend. Lennon is known as the creator of the Retro Roadmap, an online resource that spotlights what Lennon calls “cool
vintage places, good eats, and retro fun.” “I think her upcoming presentation in January is a perfect fit for our annual lecture series,” said Van Brookhoven. “We strive to select speakers that focus on area history or historic preservation, (and) Mod Betty has done a great job in bringing to light many cherished American treasures that have stood the test of time.” Van Brookhoven noted that those treasures include places such as classic diners, drive-in theaters, and quirky roadside attractions. Lennon travels the United States, visiting such attractions and businesses. Along the way, she writes about her travels and gives presentations as Mod Betty. She specifically seeks out locations that have retained their vintage charm, and then she shares what she has discovered with readers and social See Mod Betty pg 3

“We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, See Water Street pg 5

The Lantern Tours are presented by the Student Historians, a group of high school volunteers who bring history to life. Two visitors will have the opportunity to play Hendrich Lohman and Jacob Kimmel, the leaders of the 1751 group. Each tour is limited to 30 people, and advance tickets are required. Separate admission fees have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and older, for youths ages 6 to 17, and for children ages 3 to 5. Admission is free for children under age 3. Coleman Memorial Chapel, 1980 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will present a “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” as its candlelight service on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. The church’s candlelight service is a tradition dating back to the early 1900s. The “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” was composed by E.W. Benson, the Anglican bishop of Truro, in 1880 and is based on ancient sources for Christmas Eve. Guests will hear the story of Jesus’ birth, from
the Garden of Eden to the coming of the Wise Men and finally the incarnation as related in the Gospel of John. The service will include the singing of carols, as well as fellowship, and the church’s original oil lamps and candelabra will be lit. Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, readers may contact the church at 717-626-6933 or search for “Coleman Memorial Chapel” on Facebook.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has announced George Swartz as Volunteer of the Year for 2020. Swartz was recently selected for the honor by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s board of directors from among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. Swartz retired from globetrotting for a living following a 35year career as a corporate pilot for Armstrong World Industries. He is now indulging his many interests, including world travel; amassing railroad memorabilia like lanterns, tools, and insulators; and creating model train layouts. Swartz had known that he wanted to be a private pilot since he toured the Lancaster Airport with his second-grade class. He went on to graduate from the Piedmont Aerospace Institute, where he learned everything about aircraft, not just how to fly a plane. Swartz is proud of achieving more than 74,000 hours of flight safety. His knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and various other processes has served him well not only in his career as a pilot but in building his own home and in his model train hobby. Swartz’s love for trains began at age 4, with American Flyer pieces, which he still collects. Swartz is a regular volunteer on the Pennsylvania Middle Division operating model train layout located in the museum’s second-floor gallery. “Volunteering at the museum is so much fun, and I love every moment of it,” Swartz said. “The camaraderie is terrific, and everyone - volunteers and staff - is so upbeat. I particularly enjoy interacting with our patrons and making amazing connections with people from all walks of life.” A native of Lancaster, Swartz currently resides in Lititz. He is the father of an adult son and an adult daughter, whom he readily helps with home renovation pro-
jects. Until recently, he and his KPETS therapy dog Sunny visited nursing home residents. One item on his bucket list is to learn more about the history and culture of Native Americans. “Since coming on board as one of our volunteers, George Swartz has proven to be a jack of many trades, and he is the warmest and nicest guy you have ever wanted to meet,” commented Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania director Patrick Morrison. “He (is part of) a master class of volunteers that can willingly jump into any assignment and give it their all. George Swartz is a skilled interpreter, a great listener, an accomplished model railroader, an efficient researcher, a capable problem solver, and an outstanding role model.” Swartz will be formally recognized as the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Volunteer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission at a ceremony in Harrisburg in April 2020 and during the museum’s annual Members Day banquet at The Warehouse at the Cork Factory Hotel in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 600 Gap Road, Strasburg, preserves a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars and houses a vast library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center, and a museum store. Open yearround, the museum offers special events, tours, and exhibits. Individuals who would like to learn about the museum’s many volunteer opportunities are invited to contact volunteer/program coordinator Elizabeth Myers at programs@rrmuseumpa.org or 717-687-8628, ext. 3009, or visit www.rrmuseumpa.org. wick High School swim team, which has 24 students this season, and his 30th year coaching the Five Star Swim Club community swim team. On average, 120 or more Five Star swimmers compete and practice throughout the year at Lititz recCenter. The demand for indoor competitive swimming practice and swim meet space at Lititz recCenter over the winter months, when community members most frequently seek lap swimming time, prompted an expansion in 2012. The facility now boasts a separate indoor pool which can accommodate both lap swimming and swimming lessons during the winter. The splash pool also includes jetted benches and play features. Both Lititz recCenter and recROC at the Rock Lititz campus have scheduled programs to help community members actively celebrate the holidays. The Fitness Center at Lititz recCenter will host a number of free community classes. The Holiday Eve Sizzlers on Tuesdays, Dec. 24 and 31, will feature nine different morning group fitness classes, available to community members age 14 and up between 8 and 11 a.m. Community members may try morning classes from Wednesday, Jan. 1, through Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, including Body Pump, Functional 50+, Yoga for All, and BOSU Circuit. Advance registration is not required for these free holiday classes. Schedules are available in the Lititz recCenter’s Winter Program Guide at
www.lititzrec.com. Lititz recCenter will host a recFun Day for Kids on Monday, Dec. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. Boys and girls ages 8 to 14 can register and meet up with friends for gym games, including futsal, basketball, pickleball, and dodgeball. Registration is open to all children in the community. RecROC at Rock Lititz will host two holiday break programs for youths. The recROC Winter Break Camp will be offered over two days or four days between Thursday, Dec. 26, and Tuesday, Dec. 31. Activities for youths ages 6 to 14 will take place from 9 a.m. to noon each day and will include bouldering, obstacle racing, and games. Registration options are available for both members and nonmembers. Coach Rich Garcia will lead a 360 Performance Training Camp for student-athletes from Dec. 26 through Saturday, Dec. 28. This camp will feature small group training workouts for ath-
grams. Lennon has written for the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Society for Commercial Archeology. She is featured regularly in “Vintage Camper Trailers” magazine, and she publishes printed Retro Roadmap travel guides that double as road trip journals. The guides, which are loaded with historic information and travel tips, spotlight Lennon’s favorite destinations in
each state and provide readers with space to add their own memories. When Lennon is not traveling, she spends her time researching her next adventure from a spot inside her vintage 1964 camper. Although there is no cost to attend, registration is required. Readers who would like more information may call the library at 717-626-2255.

were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. Youth Pastor from pg 1 For Zac Hummel, who officially became the youth and young adult pastor at Forest Hills Mennonite Church on Oct. 28, there was a familiarity about his new place of employment. Hummel was raised in Bird-in-Hand and was dedicated at Forest Hills as a baby. He grew up in the congregation, departing when he headed to Geneva College in Beaver Falls, where he earned a degree in Christian ministries and philosophy. During college, Hummel spent some time doing mission work in New Orleans, making the move back to Lancaster County last spring. “I got connected (to New Orleans) when I was in college,” said Hummel, who traveled to the area over three spring breaks in addition to doing summer internships and spending a gap year in New Orleans. “I went down to work with an organization there called Training Christian Community,” said Hummel, who also worked with an organization called Trinity Christian during the summers between his sophomore and junior and junior and senior years. After
graduating college, he worked in Lancaster for a year before returning to New Orleans for a year with AmeriCorps City Year, which he described as “like a gap year for post-college students to work in traditionally underprivileged schools to provide support.” He continued, “(AmeriCorps City Year participants) fill the gap between a teaching staff (in a district) that doesn’t have enough funds and/or have enough teachers.” This past spring, Hummel returned to Lancaster expecting to go back to New Orleans in the fall, but a conversation with lead pastor Jon Carlson during the summer changed his mind. “He was interested in what I was doing, and he informed me that the position was going to be refocused to be more inclusive,” recalled Hummel, who added that because the church has a growing population of young adults, the role was broadening in scope and functions. When the position was offered, Hummel accepted. In his new role, Hummel is charged with “prioritizing strong relationships with collaborative
Christmas function that will provide a healthy atmosphere for spiritual, personal, and emotional development of youths and leaders.” “(There’s) a duality of wanting youths to be overseen while they’re at church, but also prioritizing individual relationships with them outside church,” Hummel said, adding that he will try to attend sporting events, concerts, and recitals that involve Forest Hills students. The position requires Hummel to work with three different groups within the church. First, he has a supportive role with the middle school youth program, which is coordinated by church volunteers. His main focus is on high school youths, teaching Sunday school and overseeing activities each Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mennonite Youth Fellowship (MYF). However, Forest Hill programs for young people do not stop when students graduate from secondary school. “We are continuing to grow and focus on the young adults, who are post-high school,” Hummel said. “We normally do things on Sunday afternoon,” he added, noting that board games and disc golf
are popular activities. He noted that the age group is not one that has been served at Forest Hills in this way before. “We are moving into uncharted areas,” he said. “A number of us have stuck around (the area), and we continue to spend time together, so that’s where my energy is focused.” Forest Hills Mennonite Church is located at 100 Quarry Road, Leola. The church’s vision statement reads, “Called to be followers of Jesus Christ, Forest Hills Mennonite Church desires to be a welcoming community of grace, love, joy and peace, so that through the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s reconciling love will flow through us in healing and hope to all people.” Readers who would like to learn more about the church and its programs may visit www.foresthillschurch.org.
worthy of love and respect. We believe that an environment that communicates dignity is an important first step to building trust and beginning the process of restoration through the other programs and support offered at Water Street.” The new facility’s name reflects Water Street Mission’s belief that God provides and protects. “Thinking ahead - whether hours, days, or months - is impossible when you’re experiencing homelessness,” Crowley said. “When they come here … they can think about their future.” LanCo MyHome director Jennifer Koppel commented that she is happy to see Providence open. “The Lancaster County Homeless Coalition is only as strong as its partners,” she said. “(LanCo MyHome’s) new strategic plan focuses on human-centered equity and justice. (Providence) takes that to … a new level. People will see that they are welcome, that they are loved.” Mission staff members will oversee the shelter’s operations, but readers who want to volun-
teer may spend time with guests at the winter weekend day shelter. For more information, readers may email volunteer coordinator Heather Ross at hross@wsm.org. Since 1905, Water Street Mission has aimed to provide an environment of hope and healing where at-risk men, women, and children in Lancaster County can find a hand-up and restoration with God. In addition to food and shelter, all guests have access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support while on campus. The 33rd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m. The project will distribute more than an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. No pre-screening is
required. In addition to the distribution at the stadium, LCPN will partner with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness.
The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for more than twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers. All are welcome to lend a hand. The new shelter was created with trauma-informed design, with safety for individuals being paramount, Adams said. Each of the shower stalls in the restrooms is private and has a heavy locking door, and clear sight lines within each of the men’s and women’s areas are maintained. After they enter the building, the only time men and women might encounter each other is in the shared laundry room. Adams noted that families stay together elsewhere on campus. The facility also includes respite rooms for those who need downtime before sleeping, indoor storage for personal belongings, fewer bunk beds and more single beds to improve personal space, and a hotbox room where guests can have their belongings heat-treated to reduce the possibility of insects and germs. “We want the layout, design, and feel of the space to communicate dignity and value to each guest,” said Water Street Mission president Jack Crowley. “ We want our guests to know that God cares for them and they are

noting that offering dignity, hope, and healing is part of the mission’s values. “(At Providence), guests will have (access to) calmness and peace and achieve restoration and equity in their lives.” The importance of treating people with dignity and respect was emphasized numerous times throughout the ceremony, as well as during tours of the facility afterward. For Water Street Mission leaders, that starts with clients’ first impressions as they enter the shelter and move throughout the venue. The front desk has the feel of a quality hotel, and the sleeping quarters will include numerous single cots. Gray manufactured plank floors run underfoot, and cream-colored walls surround the space. Vice president of programs Colleen Adams pointed out that the sconce lighting was designed to dim as the lights-out time of 10 p.m. approaches. Smaller lights ring the floor so guests and staff members can move safely throughout the building. Locking cellphone charging stations are located in the sleeping rooms.

Event Raises Funds For Off The Streets Lancaster
HARTZ Physical Therapy recently presented a check for $35,000 to Off the Streets Lancaster. The funds represent the proceeds from the 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk. HARTZ Physical Therapy’s 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk was held on Oct. 5, and it proved to be one for the record books. Over the past 15 years, $189,000 has been donated to various Lancaster-based charities from the proceeds of the annual event. For the first time this year, all proceeds were earmarked to benefit Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster, an organization working with local service agencies to assist families and individuals to get “off the streets” and into per-
manent housing. After all financial results were tallied, the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy was able to present Off the Streets Lancaster volunteers and board members with a check for $35,000. The annual tally represents the highest net proceeds ever raised through the event - topping the previous record by $15,000. OTS is a volunteer-run, charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. OTS works in partnership with various other
community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families who have a sustainable source of income to pay rent but need help overcoming the last obstacles to obtaining permanent housing: a security deposit and basic furniture. Since originating in Lancaster County in May 2013, OTS Lancaster has helped more than 2,500 men, women and children. Lena Hohenadel, grants coordinator for OTS Lancaster, noted that the funds from the Fall Blast 5K will directly help 49 families
with income who are experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County. She reported that requests for help increased 38% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is expected in 2019. For more information about OTS, readers may visit www.offthestreetsnow.com /lancaster-pa. The 5K run/walk event was made possible through the support of signature sponsor Environmental Recovery Corporation (ERC) and elite sponsors, which include Apex Realty of Lancaster, Versatek, Roseville Wealth Management, Hajoca of Lancaster, Airport View Self Storage, Emerald Advisors, PNC Bank, Tiger’s Eye, and Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL). Brian Hartz, owner of HARTZ Physical Therapy, noted that many HARTZ staff members have also had an opportunity to volunteer with OTS. For more information about HARTZ Physical Therapy, a family-owned small business with four locations in Lancaster County, readers may visit www.hartzpt.com.

Matthew Murr, a Lititz resident and a graduate of Hempfield High School and HACC, will have two more of his books published by Pen-Lit Publishing. Murr began writing children’s books last year. His first book, “The Christmas Pickle,” was released right before Christmas 2018. Powell’s Books and Barnes & Noble are both selling his first book.
Matthew’s two new books include a Christmas book about a squid who saves Christmas and “The Marvelous Mind of Marvin” (the elephant). Murr also illustrates all his books. Murr’s pen name is Aldous Bunting. As a child, James Stevenson and Dr. Seuss were two of Murr’s favorite authors. He wants to pass on that excitement of reading to today’s children. For more information, readers may find the author on Instagram (@aldous_bunting).

Messiah Lifeways and Landis Communities, who jointly share the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning, recently announced Anastasia Petrovskaya as the new director. She succeeds Susan Stauffer, who recently retired. Stauffer helped initiate the program at Messiah Lifeways in Mechanicsburg in 2005 as well as helped plant a second program by Landis Communities in 2008. Petrovskaya will give direction to all aspects of the institute at both locations. Petrovskaya, who now lives with her husband in Mechanicsburg, is originally from Yaroslavl, Russia, where she grew up and earned her undergraduate degree in psychology at Yaroslavl State University. After more years of research and study, she earned a Ph.D. in psychology. She later earned a master’s degree in practical theology and ministry from Training Christians for Ministry International Institute, an international program based in Austria. Her most recent employment was as a service coordinator for the British Red Cross when she and her husband lived in the United Kingdom. Prior to that, she worked as key account manager at Sonopress. Petrovskaya has volunteered helping others since her teenage years. She has volunteered through her church as both a Sunday school teacher and as a youth sponsor. She has also volunteered in orphanages, a hospice center and nursing homes. She currently serves as a mentor for a young girl through the Center for Champions in Harrisburg. Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning is an educational program that offers classes and unique learning opportunities on a wide range of topics to adults age 55 and older.
