OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

Governor Dick Environmental Center,

When Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to support local veterans, they had no idea how far-reaching the event would grow to be. “We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 11 riders in year one has grown to more than 450 participants. Some folks travel from as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Poconos, and Philipsburg for the ride, and each year a prize is given to the rider who wins the Long Distance Award for making the longest trek to participate. Perhaps a less-coveted prize is that of being named Baby New Year. Each year, one lucky - or possibly unlucky -

designee rides the entire first chilly mile dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters will have the honor of serving as Baby New Year for 2019. The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. See New Year’s Ride pg 4

University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas - is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports need-based scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlappvolleyball .weebly.com. Players and teams that wish to register may do so by searching for “Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball at www.active.com. Registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’ said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laid-back and relaxed. “Glen-style means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game, explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it. Denlinger added that the Glen-style play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

The Witness Tree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has announced that official nationwide planning for the 250th anniversary of the United States securing independence has begun with the inaugural meeting of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission in Philadelphia. Lynn Forney Young, honorary DAR president general, attended the meeting. According to the DAR, Young is one of only 16 private citizens appointed by bipartisan members of Congress to serve as commissioners alongside eight members of Congress and nine federal officials on the commission. The commission, established by Congress in 2016, is facilitating nationwide plans to observe the 250th anniversary of the

United States. Leading up to the commemoration, this body will play a central role in shaping the anniversary narrative on a national level. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post

motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more. Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark. Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. For more information, readers may call Stumpf at 717-4686197 or Hecht at 717-283-6379.

Lititz Garden Club will present a program on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at 6:45 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Connie Schmotzer will present “Rain Gardens.” Rain gardens do double duty in in landscapes: They clean and infiltrate storm water and become an oasis for butterflies, songbirds, and pollinators. Proper plant selection and placement are vital to a well-designed, functional rain garden. Attendees will learn how to select and plant colorful, hardy plants for these specialized gardens based on sun and shade patterns, wet or dry conditions, and seasonal flowering habits.

Schmotzer works as consumer horticulture educator for Penn State Extension in York County, where she coordinates the Master Gardener Program and the Mid-Atlantic Ecological Landscaping partnership (MAEscapes). Since 2011, she has taken leadership of the statewide Master Gardener pollinator monitoring program and the Penn State Pollinator Friendly Garden Certification program. LDHL from pg 1 world full time may borrow money up to four years. Loans are not automatically renewed; borrowers must reapply every year. The amount awarded depends on how much money LDHL has received from community donors and student repayments; it has no endowment and receives no government funding. In August 2018, LDHL loaned $1,025,100 to 604 students. “The more money we receive, the more money we can give out,” Livengood remarked. Thanks to community support, the maximum amount a student may borrow each year has increased to $1,700. The maximum student debt is currently $6,500, reported LDHL administrator Amy Heth.

Borrowers have a six-month grace period after graduation before they must start repaying their loan at the rate of $100 a month. LDHL officials hope that this holiday season folks will be inspired to participate in the organization’s first-ever Secret Santa event, which aims to pay off a portion of students’ debts anonymously. “The general idea was suggested by board members,” Livengood explained. “It’s based off the idea of people paying off layaways (at superstores), school lunch accounts, and electric bills. We thought it was a cool concept and a unique way to donate during the holiday season.” Donations to LDHL are

tax-deductible. Organizations and individuals may donate to Secret Santa through Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019. All of the funds will be divided among the borrowers, with up to $500 of debt forgiven per person. That maximum amount was identified as the most LDHL may forgive without borrowers having to pay taxes on the forgiven debt. “We will use the money to pay off as many (debts) as possible,” Livengood said. The application process for the 2019-20 school year will open on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019. Folks may learn more about Secret Santa or donate by visiting www.lancdollars.org. Those with questions may contact Livengood at 717-682-9194 or clivengood@lancdollars.org.

Since 1990, Lititz Springs VFW Post 1463 has donated more than $1 million to veterans and community projects. Recipients of funds have included Warwick High School, Lititz Community Center, the Lititz Public Library, and Lititz Springs Park. In 1919, the American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress. The wartime veterans service organization is committed to mentoring youths and to sponsorship of wholesome

programs in the community. Post 56 took its name from Lancaster County’s nickname of “the Garden Spot of America.”

Donations from pg 1 The Lititz Public Library recently received donations of $300 each from Lititz Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1463 and the American Legion Garden Spot Post 56. The donations will cover the costs of replacing the library’s fraying halyard and installing a security kit on the flag pole to prevent mischievous interference with the flag’s position. Both the VFW and the American Legion have supported the library for many years.

Pesticide Update Training Slated The Ephrata Area Young Farmers will sponsor a Pesticide Update Training on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, in the cafeteria at Ephrata Area High School, 803 Oak Blvd., Ephrata, from 7 to 9 p.m. The speakers are agronomy educators from Penn State University Extension. Leon Ressler will speak about “Protecting Farm Wells, Streams and Ponds From Pesticide Contamination.” This talk will focus on suitable pesticide storage on the farm. Topics will include locating a safe mixing and loading area, proper construction of a mixing pad, correct setbacks for maximum protection of farm wells, proper sprayer clean-out and operator safety and pesticide container recycling. Ressler will review this past summer’s weather patterns and how they affected disease development and disease management practices in corn, soybeans and small grains. Jeff Graybill will present “Farm Family Exposure to Pesticides.” Graybill will discuss a study conducted by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. He will review the importance of personal protective equipment. To conclude the program, Graybill will present updates on the dicamba-resistant soybean and spotted lanternfly. This meeting is open to the public, and advance registration is not necessary. Attendees will receive pesticide credits, including two core credits and two category credits. If the Ephrata Area School District closes school or school is dismissed early due to inclement weather on Jan. 8, the meeting will also be canceled.
