What Is The Right Type Of Pet For Your Family?
W
elcoming a pet into one’s life can be a rewarding experience. Pets promote compassion and discipline in their owners, and their companionship can be incredibly rewarding. They also can be helpful tools for teaching children responsibility. However, pets also require commitment, patience, and financial investment, and potential pet owners need to understand just what they are getting into when they decide to bring a pet home. Certain animals require a greater level of attention than others, and some pets might not be the right fit for all involved. After all, a pet is not a temporary playmate; it is a long-term family member that will require considerable love and attention. Prospective pet owners should consider various factors to help them find the pet that best suits their family. Prospective pet parents should decide if they want a young pet or prefer an older animal, as each option has its advantages and disadvantages. While puppies and kittens can be adorable, they require extra time and care upon being welcomed into a home, and that can be rough if young children are in the home and are not accustomed to pets and their unique behaviors. In such instances, an older established animal may be a better fit, especially if the family members can devote the time to retraining the animal to their family’s preferences. Families that already have pets will need to find an animal that is compatible with their existing animals. ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.
The American Veterinary Medical Foundation says that potential pet owners should carefully consider if they can provide the amount of attention their pet will need. Different species and breeds require various amounts of care. A ferret or hamster may be self-sufficient most of the day, while a boisterous puppy will not be. People who travel frequently or are out of the house most of the day will have to keep this in mind as well when determining what kind of pet – if any – they can accommodate. Affordability is another factor to consider. People should assess whether they have the money necessary to offer shelter, recreation, medical care, food, exercise, and socialization for a particular pet. If a family cannot budget for a pet that has a lot of needs, it can look for one that has relatively inexpensive care requirements, like a fish. Remember that some animals can live many years, while others have a relatively short life span. Prospective pet owners should factor an animal’s life expectancy into their decision as well. Once families make the commitment to the pet, it is unfair to surrender the animal simply because the family failed to recognize the time and energy that would be required to take care of it. For more assistance choosing a pet, people can speak with a trusted veterinarian or animal expert about the traits of certain animals and breeds up for consideration. This expert guidance will help prospective pet owners determine the type of animal that is best suited to be their ideal pet. 3

The Benefits Of Pet Ownership
Pets have been kept for centuries, and pet ownership is still extremely popular today. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but pets are more than mere companions. In fact, pet ownership can offer numerous health and well-being benefits to people of all ages. · Pets can help prevent loneliness. Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. · Pets can help lower allergy risks. Keeping pets around can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. · Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with Providing Service York & Surroundins to Areas Since 2012 g .
others. Whether a pet/owner duo is walking around the neighborhood or part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. · Pets can help combat stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure and ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or posttraumatic stress disorder. · Pets help teach responsibility. Caring for a pet teaches children and adults to be responsible, as they must ensure the routine care, exercise, and feeding of the animal.

P
arents eager to instill a sense of responsibility in their children may turn to pets to facilitate such lessons. But dogs or cats may not fit in with everyone’s lifestyle or living arrangements. In such instances, fish may be parents’ best friends. Freshwater fish tend to be inexpensive and relatively easy to care for. Goldfish, in particular, can make ideal primary companions because they are hardy and are especially inexpensive. “Feeder” goldfish cost mere cents per fish, and goldfish can provide many of the same pet care lessons as other pets. Learning About Goldfish It is important to remember that, despite their low price tag and availability, goldfish should not be viewed as disposable. These are live animals and deserve the same care and consideration as other pets. National Geographic says that goldfish are descendants of carp and originated in China. There are hundreds of varieties of goldfish found around the globe. In fact, koi are cousins of the traditional aquarium goldfish. Despite their name, goldfish come in a variety of colors. Commercial goldfish are

typically yellow, gold, and red. Wild goldfish are almost exclusively olive green or dark gray, according to PetMD. They are one of the most common aquarium fish and also have some of the longest life expectancies. The oldest recorded living goldfish reached the age of 49. Goldfish come in different sizes, but the average aquarium goldfish grows to between four and seven inches. Caring For Goldfish Goldfish that are won at fairs or carnivals may come home in plastic bags or small bowls, but they are best cared for in traditional aquariums. Goldfish are omnivores that will thrive on a healthy diet made up of pellets, vegetables, algae, and flakes. These fish tend to produce a lot of ammonia waste, so if they are kept in a bowl, the water will need to be changed quite frequently and the bowl should be large. Many aquarium experts say a tank that’s between 10 and 20 gallons is ideal for a goldfish. Such tanks will not stunt the fish’s growth and will keep it healthy and comfortable. Goldfish like relatively low water temperatures, notes the fish resource The Goldfish Tank. They should not be mistaken for tropical fish. Goldfish are typically best kept alone or with other goldfish so that their living environments are easily maintained. Also, some goldfish will try to eat smaller fish. A clean tank is vital to the health of goldfish. Filtration is ideal, as is an air pump to help agitate the surface of the water and make oxygen more accessible. It’s important to use a dechlorinator product to remove chlorine and other chemicals from tap water so that the fish can thrive. According to CaringPets.org, people who choose a bowl for their goldfish instead of a standard tank should follow the rule that the greater the amount of surface area, the more oxygen in the water. For this to be achieved, choose a wide goldfish bowl over a tall, narrow one. In addition, the water will need to be changed every few days, and 50 to 75 percent of the water in the bowl should be replaced with fresh water. Keeping goldfish as pets can introduce children and even adults to the task of caring for a living animal. With the right care, these fish can thrive and provide many hours of entertainment and enjoyment. ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.
T
here is no end to the companionship, love, and joy a pet can bring to the life of an individual or family. Unfortunately, a large number of pets still find themselves being abandoned, surrendered to shelters, or saved by rescue groups each year. But the same places that house animals that were lost or abandoned can also be the very locations where families find new pets to love. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that 6.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters in the United States each year. Animal shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies are great places to begin searching for new companion animals. The organization DoSomething.org states that, each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized because shelters are too full and there are not enough adoptive homes. To relieve the problems of relinquished or homeless pets residing in crowded shelters, prospective pet parents are encouraged to consider adopting shelter pets. There are a variety of reasons that adopting shelter dogs or cats can be a great idea. · Well-behaved animals: The Humane Society of America says most shelter pets end up in facilities not because of behavioral issues or something they did wrong but due to circumstances affecting their owners, such as moving or a divorce. That means there are thousands of housebroken, behavior-trained pets just waiting for a new family. · Lower costs: When a person adopts a pet, microchipping, first immunization costs, neutering/spaying, and some vet costs may be covered by the adoption fee. Plus, that adoption fee can be hundreds of dollars less than purchasing a pet elsewhere. · Longer life expectancy: The Canine Journal says “mutts,” or animals whose genetic makeup is a combination of at least two breeds, tend to have fewer health problems and live longer than their purebreed counterparts. But shelters also house many purebreeds for those who prefer to go that route. · Room for others: For every adopted cat or dog, room is freed up to take in more pets that need assistance. · Ethical practices: Adoption is an alternative to obtaining a pet from factory-style breeding facilities, which are often known for inhumane practices. Patton Veterinary Hospital Fosters Fear Free Environment for Pets New veterinary initiative means fewer stressed pets at the vet RED LION, Pennsylvania – April 9th 2019 – The Patton Veterinary Hospital joins many veterinary clinics across the nation in making a visit to the vet a positive experience. Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Schmidt, all of Patton’s doctors and several other staff members have already completed their individual certification and Patton Veterinary Hospital is now certified as a “Fear Free Veterinary Practice” as of September 2018. Nationally known veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker had the idea for a Fear Free campaign after hearing noted veterinary behaviorist Dr. Karen Overall speak on anxiety and fear in animals in 2009. He launched his “Fear Free Initiative” in 2016 with a view to make visits to veterinary hospitals less stressful for both pets and their owners. “Simply put,” says Dr. Becker, “Fear Free is a commitment to better pet health and well-being based on an understanding of the detrimental effects of fear and stress on animal health.” Many pet owners are familiar with the anxiety surrounding a veterinary visit – the cat who resists going into her carrier or the dog who puts on the brakes when he arrives at the vet’s front door. In fact, a Bayer Veterinary Care usage study reported that 37% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners stated their pets hate going to the vet. Patton wants to change this. “A fearful pet is an unhappy pet, and when pets are unhappy, so are their owners and so is the veterinary staff,” says Dr. Walters, one of Patton’s associate vets. “We love animals and hate to see them in distress. Our goal in creating a fear free environment is to make your pet’s visit go as smoothly and as comfortably as possible. Reducing fear makes for calmer, happier pets, better exams, and makes future visits easier when pets have a positive experience.” Patton Veterinary Hospital employs gentle handling techniques, use of food treats or a pet’s favorite toy, and use of anti-anxiety medications or sedation in order to put pets at ease. Procedures are performed wherever pets are most comfortable such as on the floor or in their owners’ laps as part of the hospital’s “Fear Free” protocol. Patton Veterinary Hospital has been part of Red Lion and York County since 1916 and is currently owned by Dr. Douglas Schmidt. Patton’s mission statement is “To work with our clients and the community to inform, to educate and to provide the best quality care to all companion animals in a pleasant family environment.”
