Detailed Directions The second page of every chapter: Describing the picture story Choose a picture and describe it to your partner. Think about the points below. • What do you see in the picture? • Where are they? • Who is the person or people? • How’s the weather? • What are they doing? • What's the meaning of the picture? • Why are they doing it? • Predict events before and after. Describing pictures is part of Japan’s Eiken text. Test-takers are asked to talk about a picture. If you’re not sure what to say, start with “I see a XX” or “There is a YY.” Describe what you see in detail. Use your imagination! The third page of every chapter: Check your sentences You probably couldn’t write every word of each sentence. That’s fine. The next step is to work with a partner to improve your sentences. For example, if your partner wrote a word and you didn’t, write it. Or, if you and your partner wrote different words, decide which is best. You might have to change the sentence, adding an “s” to make a noun plural, or adding “ed” to make a verb past tense. If sentences are not finished, guess the missing words. You and your partner should help each other. To do that, first check your partner’s sentences carefully! Review of dictation sentences During the next class, review by doing the activities below. Shadow talking - Your teacher or a partner will read the sentences; listen and repeat. Find the differences - Your teacher will read the sentences with mistakes. Listen carefully to catch mistakes. When you catch a mistake, raise your hand and tell your teacher the mistaken word. You or another student will then say the correct word. Practicing - Look at pictures 1-4 and try to say the sentences smoothly. Your partner, who is looking at the written sentence, will help you by hinting or gesturing. Your partner will then do the same for pictures 5-8 while you help. Reciting - A few students will stand and recite 1-4 sentences. The fourth page of every chapter: Places To write the places around the country, check a cell phone map or listen to the teacher. Then make an attractive, colorful map (see left) using the information provided. Vocabulary - Use the Content-based English pocket vocabulary notebook (see right). Ask your teacher for details!
