About The Author Daniel Teuber has an MA in Linguistics from Oakland University. He has taught in Japan for over 15 years at the high school and university level. His research interests include second language acquisition, classroom management, and the development of educational materials. He is currently a lecturer at Bukkyo University.

Using this book

The purpose of this book This book will give you a lot of practice in speaking and writing in English. Try to use English for the entire class. Use new words and phrases whenever you can.

The sections of this book Discuss, Discuss plus+ Practice with a classmate Each unit begins with examples of discussion questions. Practice the questions and answers with a classmate. If you don’t understand something, be sure to ask your teacher about it. Write your own questions or answers Next, write your questions (or answers) following the examples. For questions, think about your classmate, and try to ask for information that you want to know about your classmate. Practice again Finally, practice asking and answering your questions with a classmate. When you answer questions, don’t only say “Yes” or “No,” but instead, give as much information as possible. When you ask questions, listen to the answer and continue the discussion using follow-up questions.

Using this book

Idioms This section introduces an English idiom. Idioms are interesting phrases which have a special meaning. Practice saying the idiom with a partner.

Trivia This section introduces some interesting pieces of information related to one of the topics of the unit. Discuss your answers with a partner or in a group.

Survey, Interview, Group discussion, Make a quiz, Game These sections ask you to do something with a partner or in a group. You will need to spend more time to complete them. Try to do these activities using English only.

Report The last section of each unit is a written report. Usually, you should summarize an activity (survey, interview, etc.) that you completed. Study the writing tips, useful phrases, and example report before writing your own report.

I took a survey of my class. I asked my classmates what their favorite food was. I asked twelve men and eight women. The most popular answer was sushi. Five men and two women said they liked sushi. Another popular answer was pasta. Six people (two men and four women) said they liked pasta. Other popular answers were ice cream and ramen. Overall, men tended to like Japanese food, such as sushi, okonomiyaki, and udon. Women tended to like pasta more than men.
