THE PRESIDENT of the Green Party George Perdikis along with members of the Cyprus Voice for Animals (CVA) met with the Minister of Justice Ionas Nicolaou to discuss tackling the situation of animal abuse on the island. The Minister said that he intends to appoint one police offer per district to specifically deal with complaints of animal abuse and welfare. The minister added that regular police officers and ‘neighbourhood police’ will also be trained in dealing with complaints about animal mistreatment. He added that he has sent a directive to all police stations that complaints of animal abuse are to be dealt with by full investigations and perpetrators of abuse will be brought to justice. Last year Nicolaou told animal rights campaigners that their longstanding demand for animal welfare police could not be established even though according to the group only 10-15 officers would be needed island wide to run an effective unit.

New Court President to speed up Ryanair launch winter schedule for delays in Cyprus justice system Paphos
New Supreme Court President Myronas Nicolatos has said everyone is equal before the law and no-one is above the law. Myronas and a new member of the Supreme Court Tefkros Economou were sworn into office last month. Addressing the swearing in ceremony President Anastasiades said that the government is aiming for justice to be served more quickly and effectively. He referred to steps taken by the government for the establishment of an administrative court which should help expedite the load of cases before the Supreme Court now. He also asked for the practical support of the government so that the judicial body can effectively do the work it is mandated to do. New Supreme Judge Tefkros Economou spoke of the need to deal with delays in the justice system as well as of ensuring that justice will be left undisturbed to do its work.
LOW-COST carrier Ryanair has launched its Paphos winter 2014 schedule, with 8 routes, including a new daily service to Athens. The new schedule includes routes to Brussels, Chania, Kaunas, London, Manchester, Rome and Thessaloniki. Since its first flight in April 2012, Ryanair has carried over one million customer to and from Paphos. The budget airline has two aircraft based at Paphos International Airport. Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary was in Cyprus last month to launch the winter schedule. Ryanair operates around 300 Boeing 737–800 aircraft. The airline has been characterised by its rapid expansion, a result of the deregulation of the aviation industry in Europe in 1997 and the success of its low-cost business model. Ryanair’s route network serves 28 countries in Europe and also Morocco.
Ledra Palace Hotel could get Ryan Air connects Greece with the Neapolis University of Paphos new lease of life THE Buena Vista Hospitality Group have confirmed their interest in refurbishing the historic Ledra Palace hotel but ruled out operating a casino at the well known landmark. Archbishop Chrysostomos revealed last month that US investors were interested in leasing and operating the hotel in the buffer zone in Nicosia. The archbishop said that the cost of renovation was estimated at €10m to €15m. The dilapidated state of the Ledra Palace Hotel where the UN’s military personnel are accommodated prompted an independent engineering survey in 2005 to determine the suitability of the facility. The hotel was designed by the German Jewish architect Benjamin Günsberg and was built between 1947-1949 on what was then King Edward VII Street, since 1960 Markos Drakos Avenue. It originally had 94 bedrooms and 150 beds, officially rated as de luxe. All rooms had hot and cold water, central heating and a telephone. Facilities included a conference, reading, bridge and ballroom with orchestra. There were two restaurants, two bars and café. Located within the garden was a large swimming pool (which was installed in 1964), paddling pool, children’s playground and tennis courts. The hotel had two additional floors added in 1967-1968, thus raising its capacity to 200 rooms and 320 beds. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus it fell within the boundaries of the UN Buffer Zone and now serves as the headquarters for Sector 2 United Nations Roulement Regiment (URR) part of UNFICYP. 4 Issue 15 • 9th August to 11th September, 2014
Photo: The Neapolis University of Paphos
Joyful news for Paphos and particularly for the Neapolis University with the announcement of Ryan Air that it will not only continue but will enrich its flight program from the main cities of Greece to Paphos International Airport. The variety of Courses offered by the University and particularly the courses in Law, Architecture, Business Administration and Real Estate and the very good name which has acquired the Neapolis University in Greece, have made the attendance at this University as one of the first choices for the Greek students to study abroad for both undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, the possibility of staying in a University campus with contemporary services, living in a friendly and safe community, attending courses of high academic standards that are offered by renowned professors and the very low cost flight connection between Pafos, with the largest cities in Greece come to reinforce this choice of Greek students for their studies. It is also worth mentioning that in the four years of its existence the Neapolis University has managed to grow into an important academic, spiritual and cultural center of the island, especially for the region of Paphos and not only.

Most people list reasons such as expanding general knowledge, keeping the mind active, travel and living abroad as their main motives for learning a foreign language. Whatever your reason for choosing to study a new language, the benefits are endless. Living in Cyprus, there is a great deal to be gained by being able to use the Greek language! Communicating in Greek with people that you come into daily contact with eliminates the possibility of any awkward “lost in translation” moments and misunderstandings! Telling your butcher, pharmacist, greengrocer, doctor or dentist exactly what you are thinking in their native tongue can make all the difference! Being able to understand what they are saying to you if they say it in Greek can prove very beneficial as well! Employment and business opportunities will also expand with the ability to use the local language! Why not make this September the time to learn Greek? Master the local language with experienced Canadian-Cypriot teacher Demetris Georgiades! Demetris teaches the Greek language to small groups in an informal setting and offers lessons at various levels tailored to meet the needs of English expats and others living in Cyprus. Lessons are offered for free this September and then the monthly fee is a very reasonable €20! You will be speaking Greek in no time at all! Take the plunge and unlock the mystery of the local language! If you have already taken lessons, you might like to join a more advanced level, or the conversation-only class to develop your conversational skills. Marion Campey of Paphos, Jenny Adams of Peyeia and Susan Brewer of Tsada took lessons with Demetris and share their experiences below. The problem with many other approaches to language learning is that lessons are not tailored to correspond to learners’ real-life needs. For example, I now know that the textbook phrase “Θα ήθελα”, meaning “I would like” can be frowned upon in Cyprus. We’ve been taught that it is much more appreciated if things are asked for in a more direct manner by saying “Θέλω”, meaning “I want.” I’ve also learned that the hot summer “makes heat” rather than being “hot” and that there is no need to say “I am hot” when it is obvious that one would be in mid-summer. Lots of cultural information is also shared as we discuss our personal experiences with the language during our coffee breaks. I always look forward to comparing my week’s conversations with those of my classmates. Jenny Adams, Peyeia After a few dismal attempts at learning Greek, I decided to take my friends’ advice and try learning with Demetris. A year later, I am now successfully conversing with my neighbours in Greek and I’ve often surprised them with my knowledge of local expressions! Demetris has created a series of lessons which take you through the essentials of the language. Also on offer are free revision lessons on a weekly basis, generously providing a ‘second go’ at the lesson! The lessons are excellent value at €20 per month. I have thoroughly enjoyed my Greek course and I look forward to joining the conversational class this September. Give the lessons a try and you will not be disappointed! Susan Brewer, Tsada ‘Polly Oreia!’ ‘Polly Oreia!’ ‘Fine!’ ‘Fine!’ Demitris generously complements as the Friday Introductory Greek class moves carefully through the list of Greek verbs. It’s almost the end of my year of lessons and quite an experience it has been! What can I say about the year of lessons? Fun? Of course! Interesting? Very much so! Entertaining? With humorous Demetris in charge, yes! Well structured lessons? Yes, definitely! Lots of positives is Demitris’ own 38 lesson plan that over a year slowly, carefully builds up vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Built into these lessons is a constant revision of previous points so that, over time, I grew in confidence, especially in initiating basic conversation with my Greek Cypriot neighbours which was, in the first place, why I wanted to start learning Greek! The encouraging smiles of my Greek-speaking friends is a real incentive to keep going. That, and the fact that it gets easier once you’ve covered the first few weeks when you become familiar with the sounds and letters - and I personally am no linguist! If you are thinking about learning Greek, give Demetris a ring and take advantage of the excellent lessons on offer. You will be speaking Greek in no time! Marion Campey, Paphos. Enrol for Greek lessons with experienced Canadian-Cypriot teacher Demetris Georgiades (BA, McMaster University, MA, University of Sheffield). Lessons are held in small, friendly groups and the monthly fee is only €20, with the first month FREE! Add a bright, new dimension to living in Cyprus! Master the Greek language! Using a tried and tested method comprised of 38 lessons, you will find yourself speaking Greek much sooner than you thought possible! WAXING LYRICAL
The “heatwave” this beautiful island basks in year upon year, (although much earlier this year, it seems), can bring much pleasure to the careful, and sunstroke to the careless. It can also, in some cases, result in an increase in the work-rate of the ceruminous glands. That was a right conversation stopper, was it not? Now, before everyone heads off to Google “ceruminous glands”, let me explain: the ceruminous glands are the glands which produce cerumin, or, as it is more commonly known, ear wax. These glands are found – logically enough – in the ear canal, and are vital for it’s health as part of the ear’s natural cleaning system. Those among us who have to have their ears “syringed” occasionally may well notice that the need to do so can increase in the hotter months of the year. This is perfectly normal and no cause for concern, and, whilst this should not need to be said, please resist the temptation to go for a DIY solution with cotton buds. The practice of sticking anything down the ear canal rarely ends well and is unnecessary given that there are a number of properly qualified practitioners skilled in ear irrigation in and around the Paphos area. For hearing aid wearers the potential problems caused by an increase in the production of ear wax can be even worse, given that the aid itself can restrict the airflow down the canal. None of this helps keep the temperature in the canal down, and off go the ceruminous glands. Best advice in this case is for the wearer to simply remove the aid/s and give their ear/s some “down time” and a chance for the canal/s to “chillax”, as the youngsters say nowadays. So, there we have it. A simple commonsense solution to a not-widely known potential problem. Needless to say, we are at the end of the telephone – 97799281 & 97790245 - should you have any concerns about your ears or hearing. In the meantime, enjoy this glorious weather! Paphos set for spectacular festival THE PAPHOS Aphrodite Festival is all set to be a must see event this year, with a line up of spectacular on stage performances. The opera Cosi Fan Tutte by Mozart will be performed on 5, 6 and 7 September at the Medieval Castle in co-production with the lyric organization Opera Futura from Verona and the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. Paphos Mayor and President of Paphos Aphrodite Festival Savas Vergas said that the Festival has become an institution of international quality. He said that the cooperation with the Cyprus Symphonic Orchestra continues this year and is combined with a new innovative feature, which is the creation of the lyric choir and the participation of Cypriot dancers. This, he said, could one day become the basis for the creation of a Cypriot production in the future. Deputy Head of Mission of the Italian Embassy, Beatrice Vecchioni, said that the Embassy will support this year’s festival with a financial contribution in the framework of the Italian Presidency of the EU Council. She added that “cultural cooperation and the promotion of a shared cultural heritage are of fundamental importance for our bilateral relations and can give a valuable contribution not only to the strengthening of our common European identity but also for the achievement of the priorities set in the programme of the Italian EU Presidency in terms of growth and job creation”. She also said that events like the Paphos Festival play a very positive role for the Cypriot tourist sector. The Medieval Castle of Paphos located at Kato Paphos For online ticket purchases visit the Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus website, www.pafc.com.cy and the ticket price range is 25, 40, 50 and 70 euros. Cosi fan tutte Pafos Aphrodite Festival 2014 opens its curtain and presents the popular, witty opera Cosi Fan Tutte (So do all Women) by the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on 5, 6 and 7 September at the Medieval Castle in Pafos in co-production with the lyric organization Opera Futura from Verona and the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. W.A. Mozart’s masterpiece So do all Women or The school for Lovers (Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti) represents the genre of the Italian opera buffa and consists of two acts. The libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte and it premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 26 January 1790. The subject matter of this comic opera was considered rather bold for its time since it told a story of exchanging lovers. Even though the premiere was a great success and the audiences’ response was enthusiastic, for the next half of the century it was rarely performed, and when it did appear it was presented in one of several bowdlerised versions. The plot continues to enchant audiences even today since it grapples with the timeless issues of love and unfaithfulness, reason and emotion, which co-exist in a comic story where deception entwines with the truth and the facade co-exists with the face. The pure beauty, the perfection and depth of the music, characteristics of Mozart’s genius, will charm and pleasantly surprise the music loving audience. For more information please contact the offices of Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus in Pafos at 26822218 or visit the company’s website www.pafc. com.cy . Ticket prices are as following: €25, €40, €50 και €70. There will be a simultaneous translation in Greek and English via subtitles.
Cosi fan tutte: the Plot Naples, 18th century Two young officers, Guglielmo and Ferrando, argue with Don Alfonso regarding the faithfulness of women. The two young men claim that their sweethearts, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are not capable of unfaithfulness but Don Alfonso disagrees and wagers them. He devises a plan to prove to them that their sweethearts may not be endlessly faithful to them. He tells the two sisters that their fiancés have been called to the front and had to leave immediately. While the two men supposedly depart on a ship, Don Alfonso involves in his intrigue the chambermaid of the two sisters, Despina, asking her, in exchange for money, to convince her mistresses to receive two so called “foreigners” who have fallen in love with them. In the beginning, Fiordiligi and Dorabella remain unmoved by the pleas of the “foreigners” who are none other than Ferrando and Guglielmo in disguise, each courting the other’s girl. In the end the women succumb to them in the midst of pressures including a well-devised fabrication involving fake suicide attempts. The two sisters agree to marry the two “foreigners” and Despina disguises herself as the marriage notary. However, the ceremony is interrupted by the sudden arrival of their “original” fiancés who supposedly chase the two “foreigners” away. The fabrication is revealed but the two couples, thanks to the interference of the resourceful Don Alfonso will compromise Issue 15 • 9th August to 11th September, 2014 9

Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque receives top award – Cyprus Reporter photo special TO CELEBRATE the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque in Larnaca receiving a Certificate of Excellence for 2014 from TripAdvisor, the Cyprus Reporter sent our photographer to the famed mosque in Larnaca to take a look According to an Antiquities Department announcement, the certificate is based entirely on the comments of visitors following their visit to the mosque of Hala Sultan during the previous year. “The Department of Antiquities considers this distinction of special importance since it is the result of the experiences of the visitors and their subsequent comments,” the announcement said. The Muslim shrine, on the west bank of Larnaca Salt Lake, was the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s wet nurse and the wife of Ubada bin al-Samit. In Ottoman times, a mosque complex was built in stages around the tomb, especially as of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The shrine structure was first erected by Sheikh Hassan in 1760. Later the mosque was constructed and the complex assumed its present form around 1816/17. Hala Sultan Tekke complex is composed of a mosque, mausoleum, minaret, cemetery, and living quarters for men and women. While being acknowledged as a holy site for Turkish Cypriot Muslims, the mosque has also been described by secular contemporary sources as being revered by all Muslims. 10 Issue 15 • 9th August to 11th September, 2014

G & T’s Monastiroui on the hill G & T’s have taken over the Monastiroui on the hill in Kallepia as their new venture, after doing some research they have found a good number of people that live in the surrounding areas had not even heard of the restaurant and have only ever driven passed the main turning. Our aim is to try and change this as the village has so much to offer, the restaurant has its own little monastery dating back 1200 years set in the grounds with stunning views of the surrounding villages. As you turn off the main road to Kallepia which has its own museum with the history of the village. Garry & Tracy have selected a good quality range of food products and they never cut corners and are spreading there wings even wider as they have put together a new 3 course menu for the evening where diners can eat by candle light with background lounge music to set the scene. During daytime or evening you can walk the steps up to the monastery and see the breath taking views of the surrounding villages and the mountains where there are picnic areas and also a pergola at the top where you can rest and take in the amazing scenery.
Garry & Tracy are going to start the popular European game of Boules as they have been given part of the community car park. Their aim is to try and bring the local community together as well as visitors to the village.
Supper Club Supper Club This was started some time back in the UK and it was a way of going out for dinner, and knowing what the price of the food was before you arrived, the menu will change every 3-4 weeks but the price will stay the same. OF ULTIMATUM
One hundred years ago
In the summer of 1914, a series of events set off an unprecedented global conflict that ultimately claimed the lives of more than 16 million people, dramatically redrew the maps of Europe, and set the stage for the 20th Century.
The pilots of these new aircraft took tremendous risks -- vulnerable to enemy fire, at the mercy of the weather, flying new, often experimental aircraft. Crashes were frequent, and many paid with their lives.
A century ago, an assassin, a Serbian nationalist, killed the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary as he visited Sarajevo. This act was the catalyst for a massive conflict that lasted four years. More than 65 million soldiers were mobilized by more than 30 nations, with battles taking place around the world. Industrialization brought modern weapons, machinery, and tactics to warfare, vastly increasing the killing power of armies. Battlefield conditions were horrific, typified by the chaotic, cratered hellscape of the Western Front, where soldiers in muddy trenches faced bullets, bombs, gas, bayonet charges, and more
As countries caught up in the war sent soldiers to the front lines, they also built support behind the lines and at home, with women taking many roles. As villages became battlefields, refugees were scattered across Europe.
In 1914, the German Army sought a swift decisive victory over France, invading from the north. The plan failed, leading to a years-long bloody stalemate where millions of soldiers braved horrific conditions fighting for mere yards of territory. When we think of World War I, images of the bloody, muddy Western Front are generally what come to mind. Scenes of frightened young men standing in knee-deep mud, awaiting the call to go “over the top”, facing machine guns, barbed wire, mortars, bayonets, hand-to-hand battles, and more. We also think of the frustrations of all involved: the seemingly simple goal, the incomprehensible difficulty of just moving forward, and the staggering numbers of men killed. The stalemate on the Western Front lasted for four years, forcing the advancement of new technologies, bleeding the resources of the belligerent nations, and destroying the surrounding countryside. Industrialization brought massive changes to warfare during the Great War. Newly-invented killing machines begat novel defense mechanisms, which, in turn spurred the development of even deadlier technologies. Nearly every aspect of what we would consider modern warfare debuted on World War I battlefields n Europe’s armies first marched to war in 1914, some were still carrying lances on horseback. By the end of the war, rapid-fire guns, aerial bombardment, armored vehicle attacks, and chemical weapon deployments were commonplace. Any romantic notion of warfare was bluntly shoved aside by the advent of chlorine gas, massive explosive shells that could have been fired from more than 20 miles away, and machine guns that spat out bullets like firehoses. Each side did its best to build on existing technology, or invent new methods, hoping to gain any advantage over the enemy. Massive listening devices gave them ears in the sky, armored vehicles made them impervious to small arms fire, tanks could (most of the time) cruise right over barbed wire and trenches, telephones and heliographs let them speak across vast distances, and airplanes gave them new platforms to rain death on each other from above. New scientific work resulted in more lethal explosives, new tactics made old offensive methods obsolete, and mass-produced killing machines made soldiers both more powerful and more vulnerable. Animals were used in World War I on a scale never before seen -- and never again repeated. Horses by the millions were put in service as cavalry mounts and beasts of burden, but they were not the only animals active in the war. Mules, dogs, camels, and pigeons all played vital roles, as well as many others -- all at great risk, and with heavy cost. When the war began, Europe’s armies had an understanding of warfare that put the use of cavalry in high regard. Soon, however, the deadly terrain that evolved around trench warfare rendered cavalry attacks nearly useless on the Western Front. But the need for constant resupply, movement of new heavy weaponry, and the transport of troops demanded horse power on a massive scale -- automobiles, tractors, and trucks were relatively new inventions and somewhat rare. British and French forces imported horses from colonies and allies around the world, a nearconstant flow of hundreds of thousands of animals across the oceans, headed for war. One estimate places the number of horses killed during the four years of warfare at nearly 8 million. Other animals proved their usefulness as well: Dogs became messengers, sentries, rescuers, and small beasts of burden. Pigeons acted as messenger carriers, and even (experimentally) as aerial reconnaissance platforms. World War I was the first major conflict to see widespread use of powered aircraft -- invented barely more than a decade before the fighting began. Airplanes, along with kites, tethered balloons, and zeppelins gave all major armies a new tactical platform to observe and attack enemy forces from above. Over the course of the war, the role of the military aviator progressed from one of mere observation to a deadly offensive role. Early on, pilots would would fly off armed only with pistols (or completely unarmed) -- by 1918, fighter planes and massive bombers were in use, armed with multiple machine guns and devastating explosive payloads. Older technologies, like tethered balloons and kites were used on the front lines to gain an upper hand. As aircraft became more of a threat, anti-aircraft weapons and tactics were developed, and pilots had to devise new ways to avoid being shot down from the land and the sky. Aerial photography developed into an indispensable tool to guide artillery attacks and assess damage afterward.
When looking through thousands of images of World War I, some of the more striking photos are not of technological wonders or battle-scarred landscapes, but of the human beings caught up in the chaos. The soldiers were men, young and old, and the opportunity to look into their faces and see the emotion, their humanity, instead of a uniform or nationality, is a gift - a real window into the world a century ago. While soldiers bore the brunt of the war, civilians were involved on a massive scale as well. From the millions of refugees forced from their homes, to the volunteer ambulance drivers, cooks, and nurses, to the civilian support groups used by all major armies, ordinary people found themselves at war. Moving troops and supplies by sea was vital to all armies involved in the war. The battle for control of the seas led to an arms race, new deadly tactics, and unprecedented loss of life at sea. The land war in Europe became a destructive machine, consuming supplies, equipment, and soldiers at massive rates. Resupply ships from the home front and allies streamed across the Atlantic, braving submarine attacks, underwater mines, and aerial bombardment. Battleships clashed with each other from the Indian Ocean to the North Sea, competing for control of colonial territory and home ports. New technologies were invented and refined, such as submarine warfare, camouflaged hulls, and massive water-borne aircraft carriers. And countless thousands of sailors, soldiers, passengers, and crew members were sent to the bottom of the sea. Centuries of colonialism had spread Europeans around the world, and 20th century developments in transportation were shrinking the globe. World War I pitted diverse nations and cultures against each other in a way no other conflict ever had. At the start of the war, the largest of the European belligerents were all colonial powers -- they had people and valuable assets stationed in countries all over the Earth. These multinational interests, along with overseas alliances and the modernization of sea transport, are what put the “world” in World War I. Enemy nations attacked each other’s colonies and fleets, and laborers and soldiers were recruited from colonized countries, and brought to the front lines. Allied countries -- many former colonies -- shipped soldiers and supplies into battle, coordinating with their European counterparts. And, despite the fact that the Western Front is the best-known theatre of World War I, the Eastern Front -the battle between the Central Powers and the Russian Empire -- was equally devastating and consequential, resulting in millions of deaths and divisions that continue to affect the region to this day. In this entry, a look at some of the diverse nations and cultures involved in the war. Nearly four years of deadly stalemate on the Western Front slowly came to an end in 1918, as Allied armies pushed into Germany at enormous cost, leading the Central Powers to finally seek an armistice. In early 1917, British and French troops were launching futile offensives against German lines in Belgium and France, suffering greatly. The Central Powers were building their defensive capabilities, but launching limited offensives -- continuing a stalemate costing thousands of lives every month. Over the next year, a treaty between Russia and the Central Powers freed up German resources, but American troops began arriving in France by the thousands, and Allied command became more unified and effective. The tide began to turn decisively in July 1918, beginning with the Battle of Amiens, followed by the “Hundred Days Offensive”, where Allies pushed German and Austro-Hungarian troops beyond the Hindenburg Line, forcing the Central Powers to seek a cease-fire. On November 11, 1918, all fighting ceased on the Western Front, after four years, and some eight million casualties. One hundred years after the start of the Great War, none of the participants remain alive, and we are left with aging relics, fading photographs, scarred landscapes being reclaimed by nature, and memorials and graveyards across the globe. Four years is not a long time – but in four years a boy in his early teens grows into a young man and in four years the generation of British and Commonwealth lads born in the mid 1890s would come of age and go to war. In 1914 they went to The Great War, the War to End All Wars - and many never came home. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun, and in the morning We will remember them” Issue 15 • 9th August to 11th September, 2014 13

The Orphean Singers Keep Giving
The Orphean Singers were founded over 22 years ago with the joint aims of making great music and raising money for charity. Over those years they have donated in excess of €90,000 – mostly to local charities – including a kidney dialysis machine which is still being used in the Paphos General Hospital. The most recent donation was €780 for the Friends’ Hospice (pictured). Over the last twelve months they have given a total of €1380 to the Friends’ Hospice, €1265 to PASYKAF and €1522 to Solidarity along with some smaller donations. The choir perform three concerts a year and after covering expenses give whatever they have raised to charity. The next concert will be in the Annabelle Hotel in Paphos on Friday 17th October. The title is “Music from the Movies.” In a varied programme they have concentrated on songs from films rather than musicals. Along with classics like The Shadow of Your Smile and New York New York there will be songs to charm and amuse you – as well as a few surprises. Stage One Theatre, Emba will present the Orphean Singers in their now well known and loved Christmas concert on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December. The programme will be made up of many well loved carols and opportunities for the audience to join in as well as some new and interesting Christmas Music. If you have been before you will not want to miss this. If you haven’t been before you really don’t know what you are missing. Christmas definitely starts here. In the Spring of 2015 – well that’s another story. Please watch this space. Tickets for all concerts are available from Carol on 99043558. The Orphean Singers are extremely grateful to the Annabelle Hotel, the Kamares Club and Thorsten Quakernack of 3-D Global for their ongoing support, without which the choir would not be able to support so many charities. But who are Kitcheners? For that answer let’s ask Benjamin Green “Kitcheners are fast becoming the largest buyers of second user domestic household goods and furniture in Europe. They buy anything and everything from motor vehicles and complete house shop office and business contents to individual items for cash. They purchase for cash, always at a fair and honest rate. We have been instructed to act as valuation and buyers on behalf of Kitcheners across the whole of Cyprus. I believe that this deal offers the best of both worlds to our existing and new clients. At the present time we are able to auction goods for clients but we as a auction house do not buy goods in for cash. Our auction without doubt achieves the best return in cash terms for our clients. It is however a sign of the times that many people through no fault of their own require an instant cash payout. In the past the alternative to putting their goods through auction with us has been to call in a second hand dealer or attempt to sell their goods privately. Selling goods privately is often a long drawn out process fraught with problems. Having to deal with time wasters and second hand dealers posing as private buyers is often the least of them. With the increase of thefts and burglaries showing complete strangers around your home is considered by many not the best of ideas. Sadly, there are a number of unscrupulous second hand dealers. They often offer very low sums of money, well under the true market value for the goods. They are aware many people need to realise cash quickly. Often this is due to bereavement or the urgent need to move back to the UK on health grounds. We always have offered a free and confidential verbal valuation to sellers without obligation. This service at least allows the seller to know the value of what they have and not be taken advantage of. In cases of the seller needing instant access to funds we have not been able to assist. My message to the unscrupulous dealers is watch out! Now we at Hammer’s are giving the power back to the seller. Our deal with Kitcheners allows us to extend the services we offer. Those people who are aware of the TV show David Dickinson’s REAL DEAL will understand at once what we can now offer. If you are not a viewer of this programme the format is quite simple. David offers the seller two choices to either sell for cash there and then or send the items to auction. David Dickinson acts as an honest broker making sure the offer is fair and advising if he feels that they could raise more at auction. The choice is left to the seller. Hammer’s can now offer the choice of selling for instant cash to Kitcheners at the fairest spot cash price or putting the goods into auction. I like to think of this new service as the Hammer’s real deal. As a professional valuation expert I am able to value the items and then give the client a choice. Sell for instant cash at our valuation to Kitcheners or send the goods to auction. Of course the client can still decide not to take up either offer with us and sell their goods elsewhere. “ If you are thinking of selling a single item or a complete clearance it would seem that Hammer’s should be your first port of call they can be contacted on 99931123 or visit their Chloraka auction house Monday – Thursday 9am – 3pm. 18 Issue 15 • 9th August to 11th September, 2014

Grim anniversary as Cyprus marks 40-years since second invasion FORTY YEARS AGO Turkey launched their second invasion, taking most of the north-eastern third of Cyprus after its forces launched air, artillery and tank attacks in the early morning of August 20. Just two hours after peace talks collapsed in Geneva, Turkish tanks were advancing on the east coast resort of Famagusta. The Turks reached Nicosia airport, but had not tried to take it from the United Nations forces holding it. Greece responded to the Turkish attack by withdrawing its armed forces from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The Security Council met and ordered an immediate ceasefire in Cyprus and a resumption of negotiations. Turkish troops first invaded Cyprus on July 20, 1974, five days after the government of Archbishop Makarios was toppled by a military coup, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece. Two unproductive conferences in Geneva followed; the first between Britain, Greece and Turkey and the second with the additional attendance of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot representatives. Three weeks after a ceasefire was declared on July 22, and despite the fact that talks were still being held and just as an agreement seemed about to be reached, the Turkish army mounted the second full-scale offensive. As a result, Turkey increased its hold to include the bombing Famagusta and the rich citrus-growing area of Morphou in the west. All in all, almost 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus came under Turkish military occupation. Nearly one third of the population, some 200,000 Greek Cypriots, were forcibly uprooted from their homes and properties, thousands were killed during the hostilities, over 1,000 persons were listed as missing while thousands of Greek Cypriots and Maronites remained enclaved.
Warning over ‘dangerous’ Chinese lanterns THE FORESTRY DEPARTMENT has warned the public and shopkeepers against buying and selling or using popular lanterns as their use poses a danger to the surrounding environment. The department said that the lanterns are considered a threat to the natural environment, especially in rural areas where their use is likely to lead to fires with “unpredictable catastrophic consequences”. “Any person using lanterns or causing fire as a result of their use is guilty of an offence and on conviction is subject to imprisonment or to a fine or to both such fine and imprisonment,” the statement concluded. In 2012, a Chinese lantern was blamed for destroying three yachts in Limassol. The lanterns have been deemed unsafe under the General Safety of Products Law 2004-2010, and authorities have warned they will be removed from the market where found. To report sales of the lanterns call 1429.
Cyprus tops car hire prices survey TOURISTS get a great deal on car hire prices in Cyprus a new survey has revealed. A survey by Post Office Travel Money found rental fees in Majorca are twice as high as those in Cyprus. Other popular spots where charges were particularly high included Faro in Portugal, Split in Croatia and Dublin. Taking into account expenses such as satnav hire, additional-driver cover and petrol the pricest destination was the Norwegian capital Oslo where hiring a car for one week would set you back as much as £614. The cheapest place to rent a car was in Larnaca where one-week hire was just £295.
This Month in Cyprus History
1895 Acts of violence have been frequent of late in the Paphos District. Three servants of the Cyprus Company have been shot. A strong body of police has been despatched to the district, but, so far, none of the marauders have been captured. The government says that travelling is dangerous. 1941 Four people were killed and 20 injured and there was serious damage to 15 houses result of a raid on Famagusta by enemy planes, says an official announcement. The “Cyprus Post” described the raid as “deliberately indiscriminate.” 1942 The first Axis ‘plane to be shot down over Cyprus this year fell to an Empire fighter pilot. An Italian bomber approaching the island was smartly intercepted, and after short engagement crashed flames. 1974 Britain’s role as an adjudicator in the Cyprus crisis assumed even greater importance today as the search continued for an agreement on the ceasefire lines. For the second day officers of Britain, Turkey, Greece and the United Nations flew by helicopter over the battle areas in an effort to define the lines. 1977 President Makarios III died unexpectedly of a heart attack. At his funeral, held at St. John’s Cathedral outside the Archbishopric in Nicosia, 182 dignitaries from 52 countries attended while an estimated 250,000 mourners—about half the Greek Cypriot population of the island—filed past the coffin. 1996 Emotions are still running high following the killing of a Greek Cypriot demonstrator by Turks, who confronted many protesters in the UNcontrolled buffer zone. 2011 Relatives of the victims of the 2005 Helios air crash which killed all 121 passengers on board, will light candles in memory of their loved ones, as they continue to wait for a court decision on the tragedy. 2011 As the Cyprus holiday period starts, electricity demand has dropped sufficiently with authorities now making every effort not to proceed with the usual daily power cuts - a result of the limited power capacity on the island following the destruction of its main power plant in Vassilikos. 2012 President Christofias will not resign over the worsening financial situation his spokesman told reporters. Stephanos Stephanou batted away suggestions that the President will step down if Trioka negotiations fail, saying that Demitris Christofias is actually leading efforts in order for the Cypriot economy to recover.

Recycling Greenman Solar are a professional company of engineers who have designed and installed over 900 high quality solar arrays. Our professional attention to detail is second to none and we pride ourselves in giving our customers a superlative service. Both the organizations of social solidarity and the people responded with warm enthusiasm to the invitation “The whole of Cyprus collects and offers” campaign of Anakyklos Perivallontiki, the non for profit textile recycling organization. This campaign started on 2nd April and ended on 30th June 2014. Its aim was to collect as many textiles as possible with the cooperation of hundreds of organizations from every part of Cyprus By the end of June 2014, 281 organizations enlisted in our campaign. These included 44 municipal and local council bodies, 91 schools, 86 churches, 15 social food banks/support centres, 16 foundations and 29 committees and other bodies. The campaign managed to collect 67 tons of clothing and has donated the sum of 13,426 euro to help support the social work of those organizations. The campaign gives the opportunity to the organizations to collect clothes on their own premises which are visited by the staff of Anakyklos Perivallontiki. The clothes are collected, weighed and the income is shared with these organizations to reinforce the work of social solidarity they are involved in. Some of these choose to adopt another organization and give this help to its members in need. Part of the clothing is offered free to needy persons or families in the shops of social solidarity of Anakyklos in Lefkosia, Lemesos and Pafos or are even delivered as parcels to the individuals or families through the Social Welfare Services, local communities or organizations. This offer of free clothes has been going on since the foundation of Anakyklos in August 2010.
If you are considering a Photovoltaic Solar system, please check out the many reviews of satisfied customers on our website. We only use the best quality components durable enough to withstand the rigors of the Cypriot weather. Do you want to save over €1400.00 per year from your electricity bill then call us to find out more. We don’t employ sales people and we will never pressure you to sign anything or make any decision when we visit to survey.

A parallel aim of these campaigns is to sensitize the public as regards social solidarity in view of the social and economic crisis that Cyprus is going through. Additionally we aim to stress the need for reuse and recycling of textiles in order to protect the environment. Due to the warm response to this campaign, which in some cases is still going on, it will be repeated in Autumn. We sincerely thank all those organizations, schools, as well as the individuals, who participated with so much zeal and enthusiasm in this collective effort and helped to collect or donate generously to this campaign.

Kendall and Morrelli News Brief Cliff Richard and his Shadows tribute on the 4th of October has to be postponed till further notice. Kendall and Morrelli have mentioned that it is very unfortunate but demand for the concert has been extremely poor compared to their other concerts. The concert has been advertised since the beginning of the year and the decision to postpone was a very difficult one. However on a positive note reservations and ticket sales for Sister Act and The Jersey Boys are very good with both tours looking like sell-outs for 2014. Also demand for TheMusic of the Hollies international band at Tala ampthitheatre on the 19th and 21st June 2015 and Pissouri amphitheatre for the 20th are extremely encouraging. As is the demand for international award winning Fleetwood Mac tribute Band Fleetwood Bac for September 11th and 13th at Tala Amphitheatre and 12th at Pissouri Amphitheatre 2015. Please visit www.kendallandmorrelli.com and click Outdoor Concerts 2015 for details of the return of The Bee Gees in Sept 2015. Any questions email kendallandmorrelli@gmail.com
The hidden message is:
Prior to this year, Tala Amphitheatre had a ‘water only’ policy and this was relaxed for the 2014 season. Unfortunately due to the behaviour of a few individuals, unless people act responsibly, drink sensibly and clear up their litter after a show, it is likely that the ‘water only’ policy will be reinstated. Kendall & Morrelli and Tala Council want everyone to enjoy the shows and hope that the disrespectful minority will consider the effect their behaviour has on the organisers, the performers and the majority of the audience and behave accordingly. Please also note that whilst you can currently take drinks into the amphitheatre, no cool boxes are allowed

Paws Dog Shelter THREE SAD PUPPIES Very early one morning recently, Matt, one of the Kennel Consultants, on arriving at PAWS Dog Shelter, found two dogs tied to the gate. As he was concentrating on untying the two adult dogs and getting them under control, he heard a noise. On turning around Matt realised that someone had been behind him. When he looked downwards, Matt saw three small puppies. Sad to say the person who had literally just left the pups did not even have the decency to speak to Matt. The three little pups are between 4 to 6 weeks old, two boys and one girl. They are a hound cross breed. For puppies of their age, they are quiet and seem very sad at the moment. Arriving at the shelter must have been rather traumatic for them. However, they are really sweet and do enjoy human companionship and cuddles. Could you give one of them a forever home? Come and see them for yourself at the PAWS Dog Shelter, Acheleia between 0700 and 1200. Phone Matt or Pete on 99683775.
SEPTEMBER PAWS FUND-RAISING EVENTS Sunday 7th September 2014 - Yard Sale at PAWS Dog Shelter, Acheleia. Sellers setting up at 8.00 a.m. Cost €10 per car. For more information or to book your car, please call 99683775 Saturday 20th September 2014 – PAWS Raft Race at Bonamare Beach Do you have what it takes to get together a team and build a raft? It could be a team representing a business or a team of friends from a club or the local pub. Think of the fun you would have in designing and assembling your raft prior to the big day. Then on the 20th September you would transport it to the Bonamare Beach in Timi (just off the road leading down to Paphos Airport) and put your raft to the test by racing against other teams. No doubt there will be some thrills and spills. Spectators and supporters will be very welcome and a BBQ will be available. All proceeds generated by the event will go directly to PAWS Dog Shelter. Please see the poster for further information.
HAPPY TAILS FROM PAWS When yet another nervous young female dog and her tiny pups were brought into PAWS at the beginning of the year, no one could have predicted how things would work out for them. Mum, Annette, turned out to be a good mother and her little ones thrived. Around the same time a couple of newcomers to the island, Chris and Caroline, had just started doing voluntary work at PAWS. Chris takes up the story: “Whilst dog walking for PAWS, I happened to see a very shy young dog named Annette but she was not too keen on men. In fact when I went into her pen she ran away, but there was something about her that made me want to keep trying. Another volunteer, Eddie, could get close to her, so he went in and patted her. I then went in with him and talked to her and gave her a treat. After we had finished for the day I went into her run and sat down with her, talking and offering her treats. She slowly came to me and by the time we were ready to go home I was allowed to pat her. The next time we went I managed to put a lead on her and we went for a walk. I think that was the start of our friendship.” “After that, each week when Caroline and I went to the shelter, Annette was waiting for me at one of the doors and was very keen to go for a walk. Where ever I went, she would follow me and by now wanted a lot of attention. By this time her pups were older and totally independent. Then one day Caroline took Annette out for a walk and when we were leaving, Annette was up at the door and she cried as we left. It was then we decided that we would give her a permanent home.” On arrival at the house for the first time the dog was excited and investigated the whole house and garden. Although not house-trained, she only had two ‘accidents’ indoors. Having renamed her ‘Honey’, Chris told us that she loves to chase lizards and next door’s pet duck (called Crispy). She plays with her toys and loves splashing in her pool. She does not like being enclosed either in a run or in a crate and if the television or radio are too loud for her liking, Honey will lie with one ear pressed down and will cover the other ear with a paw! Her very own form of noise reduction. “All the neighbours love her and come up to the gate to make a fuss of her. We love her, she loves us and she has finally made it to her forever home” said Chris. Caroline commented on how interesting it is to observe a dog’s personality showing through once they have relaxed in a home environment. So what has become of Honey’s four pups? One was homed here in Cyprus, two are away to Germany and the last one has just been reserved and is also soon to travel to Germany. All at PAWS are delighted when shelter dogs land so lucky! THE AUCTIONEERS LOT Our resident expert is Benjamin Terence Green a licensed auctioneer and valuation professional with over 30 years experience. Ben currently holds regular Friday auctions at Hammers Auction House Chloraka in Paphos.
Dear Ben
Dear Ben
I have enclosed a picture of my No 60 Dinky aeroplane set (still in original box) I have been told that these type of toys now fetch good money. I picked this up in the 1960s at the local church jumble sale. Can you tell me more?
I came across this Avengers TV annual from 1967 in a box of old books we are about to donate to a local charity shop. My husband seems to think it has some value I am not so sure. Can you help?
Frank Paphos
Liz Polis
Dear Frank Its so good to see this set in the original box. A Dinky Pre-war No.60 Aeroplanes Set is a scarce set that comprises of No.60A Imperial Airways Liner - Gold number G-ABTI, No.60B Leopard Moth - Green, registration number G-ACPT, No.60C Percival Gull - White, registration number G-ADZO, No.60D Low Wing Monoplane - Red, registration number G-AVYP, No.60E General Monospar - Silver, registration number G-AVP and No.60F Cierva Autogiro Helicopter - gold, blue rotors - all aircraft have light wear, a couple have slight discolouration, there are no obvious signs of fatigue and all have their propellers and rotors intact. This complete set includes “Gliding Game” instructions, a small envelope containing clips and a hank of blue string. Contents are generally Good to Good Plus and have been restrung onto a Good backing card and enclosed within a Fair to Good blue card box with illustrated lift off lid, (some tearing to a couple of lid corners), box lid stamped A1040 Never the less this is a scarce set in any condition. Dinky Toys were die-cast zamac miniature vehicles produced by Meccano Ltd – makers of Hornby Trains, named after founder Frank Hornby. Dinky Toys in England were made from 1935 to 1979. The factory was at Binns Road, Liverpool, England. I don’t know what this cost you at the jumble sale in the 60s but the current value is around €1250. Ben Dear Liz This is the first of the Avengers TV annuals produced. (there were three in total). The Avengers is a spy-fi British television series created in the 1960s. The Avengers initially focused on Dr. David Keel (Ian Hendry[) and his assistant John Steed (Patrick Macnee). Hendry left after the first series and Steed became the main character, partnered with a succession of assistants. Steed’s most famous assistants were intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), and later Tara King (Linda Thorson). Later episodes increasingly incorporated elements of science fiction and fantasy, parody and British eccentricity. The Avengers ran from 1961 until 1969, screening as one hour episodes its entire run. The pilot episode, “Hot Snow,” aired on 7 January 1961. The final episode, “Bizarre,” aired on 21 May 1969. The Avengers was produced by Associated British Corporation, a contractor
within the ITV network. After a merger in July 1968 ABC Television became Thames Television, which continued production of the series although it was still broadcast under the ABC name. By 1969 The Avengers was shown in more than 90 countries. 90 countries mean an awful lot of people remember this series. That equates to a lot of people who would like to own something that maybe was from their childhood. The annual you own is fairly rare and if in good condition should achieve a sale price of €100-125. Ben
