Some things just defy gravity. Sales of the Apple iPhone are as hot as ever, recession or not. McDonald’s is doing well too. So is Internet access. Why, in down times, are some things still going up? Why do some things remain as can’t-live-without necessities, even while they cut back on luxuries? Make no mistake: there are not a lot of success stories. A survey just out from the Pew Research Center shows that “Americans are paring down the list of familiar household appliances they say they can’t live without” - so sharply that a microwave oven, labeled a necessity by 68 percent of those polled back in 2006, has now dropped to 47 percent. Air conditioners (down by 16 percentage points) and dryers (down 17) took a hit, too.

The iPhone Designer jeans Wal-Mart and Costco McDonald’s Internet access High-definition TV sets At first, the list seems to make no sense. Sure, fast food and big-box discount stores would do better than four-star restaurants and pricey boutiques. And one can see how a night at home would seem a better bargain than a day at the mall.

A Reality TV Hater’s Dream Come True? E!’s ‘Reality Hell’ Turns the Tables on Those Seeking Fame Through Reality TV... By LOREN GRUSH

Whether it’s toddlers fighting for a pageant crown or people going on dates in pitchblack rooms, reality television is constantly pushing the envelope to see what it can come up with next.

Watch the Reality Hell - Episode1 pt. 1 at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=pFBV7kdDDzM

Unsuspecting Kelly Tousignant (second from left) thinks she’s competing in a reality show called “The Complete Package,” but in reality she’s part of “Reality Hell,” a show that creates fake reality shows. (Courtesy E! Entertainment Television Inc.)So what do you get when you create a show that openly mocks reality shows? E!’s latest series, which premieres Sunday. “Reality Hell” lures unsuspecting participants onto fake reality shows in order to mess with their heads. “It started out as just trying, in some way, to deconstruct the reality genre, because reality has almost become a parody of itself,” show creator-executive producer Peter Cohen said. “So, I thought, let’s take it to one more level.”

Widows, Cougars and Miscreants In each episode, “Reality Hell” recreates a different kind of reality show where every participant is a professional actor, except for one labeled the “target.” This individual thinks that he or she is going to star in a reality show, but soon experiences a different reality, so to speak. “Most reality shows are very much produced with real-show elements,” Cohen said. “Producers get what they need by prompting the contestants. But we’re very scared of giving anything away. It’s like a house of cards, and if something goes wrong, it all falls apart. It’s actually more difficult for us in some sense because we have the added responsibility of making each show look real for just one person.”

“I pick the films I do by how I’m feeling at the moment.” - interview with Cameron Diaz. For more than a dozen years, audiences have been eating up that Cameron Diaz grin. You know it: That megawatt sweet smile that dares you to go ahead and try not to fall for her. She played it to the hilt in romantic comedies from “There’s Something About Mary” to “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and it’s no surprise to see it in Diaz’s return to the genre, “The Holiday.” This time Diaz plays Amanda, a woman who needs a break - from men and her Los Angeles life - so she swaps homes with the similarly burned-out Iris (Kate Winslet), a move that takes her all the way to the English countryside. It’s just her luck that Graham (Jude Law) comes knocking. So much for a quiet holiday. We caught up with Diaz and chatted about the film, her favorite holiday, working with Jude Law, and best of all, the person she’d most like to trade places with.

Any TV shows you’re obsessed with? I love “Grey’s Anatomy.” It’s the only one that I actually watch. And I love “The Soup” - do you watch it? It’s hilarious. Oh sure. “Talk Soup” lives on. Yeah. I started watching it when I was in high school. It’s almost like a guilty pleasure. I haven’t heard about anything you’re doing after “Shrek 3.” What’s next? I don’t have anything set up. I’m at the moment unemployed. Oh no! Yeah, I’m hopefully going to rectify that at some point, but nothing at the moment. WHAT IS YOUR OFFER?

...NEGOTIATION SKILLS 2

IT’S TIME TO NEGOTIATE! Here are a few golden rules to successful negotiations:

01 02 03

Always try to negotiate for at least 15 minutes. Any less than that and it is unlikely that either party has had enough time to fairly consider the other side. Generally, the size or seriousness of the negotiation determines the amount of time needed to negotiate it. Always offer to let the other party speak first. This is especially important if you are the one making a request for something such as a raise. The other party may have overestimated what you are going to ask for and may actually offer more than what you were going to request. Always respect and listen to what your opponent has to say. This is important even if he or she does not extend the same courtesy to you. Do your best to remain calm and pleasant even if the other party is displaying frustration or anger. Remember some people will do anything to intimidate you.

Sean: First of all, the book re-launch. I just wanted to remind everybody that we will be relaunching the fairy-tales range with new modern covers, and that this is going to happen at the beginning of next month. It’s important that we get this right and there have been quite a few… John: Actually Sean, can I just ask you – sorry to hold the meeting up – can I ask you about those dates, because I thought that this was going to be published the month after next, and I understand that everybody has got their dates, but I do feel quite strongly that we’re bringing this out too soon. Sean: Well, any other thoughts before I comment on that? Carrie: I don’t think we’ve got any choice at all about it. If the radio programmes are going out at the beginning of next month, we’ve got to launch the book at the same time if we’re going to have any sales impact.
