ACTIVITY SHEET

STONEHENGE AND PREHISTORIC JAPAN

Hello and welcome to Stonehenge

We are yuru-chara (ゆるキャラ), cute mascots which are popular all over Japan. We have been specially created for the Circles of Stone special exhibition. Head to the exhibition to find us and start this activity sheet.

ARCHAEOLOGIST

William Gowland was an archaeologist who carried out excavations (digs) in Japan and Britain more than 100 years ago. Look at the objects on display that were collected by Gowland and list two of the artefacts below. 1 2

3

DOGU

Clay figurines, called dogu (土 偶) in Japanese, have been found at Jomon settlements and stone circles. They may have represented goddesses or spirits and been used in rituals and ceremonies.

Imagine you were making a dogu to leave as an offering or a gift to someone important. How would you decorate it? Draw the outline of a dogu when you get home and then decorate it.

TIMELINE

Leave Circles of Stone and look around at the rest of the exhibition. On the wall near the models of Stonehenge you can see a timeline. Find and write down the dates of when these important events occurred. Stonehenge stones were set in place:

6

NO WRITTEN RECORDS

Nobody knows for certain what Stonehenge was built for. We know that it is aligned with the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset but there are no written records to tell us why it was built or how it was used. What do you think Stonehenge was built for? Write your ideas below.
