Last season, we were honoured to win two Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards, including the prize for Outstanding Company; we garnered rave reviews for our Modern Masters programme at Sadler’s Wells – our first as their Associate Company; we had our most successful Christmas season ever at the London Coliseum, welcoming over 100,000 audience members; we toured across the UK and beyond to China, Singapore and Latin America; and we received an invitation to perform next year at Palais Garnier, home of Paris Opera Ballet. All this is testament to the talent and passion of our dancers, musicians, and everyone behind the scenes.

ENGLISH NATIONAL BALLET’S

2015-16 SEASON We are living through one of the most thrilling periods in English National Ballet’s 65-year history, bringing the powerful, emotional, provocative and sometimes life-changing language of ballet to audiences around the UK and further afield.

We open this new season with Lest We Forget, our triple bill reflecting on World War I featuring works by Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant and Liam Scarlett. It will be performed not only in London but also in Milton Keynes and Manchester. I am really proud that our autumn tour, which also goes to Bristol, Southampton and Liverpool, will include these new works alongside two stunning full scale ballets: Rudolf Nureyev’s Romeo & Juliet, one of the treasures in our repertoire, and Le Corsaire, which wowed audiences and critics in 2013. We are looking forward to performing them to audiences up and down the country.

At Christmas, we return to the London Coliseum with Nutcracker. Wayne Eagling’s beautiful production is now a firm fixture in many families’ holiday celebrations and it’s always a joy for us to bring its magic and wonder to so many people. Later in the season, little ones can also enjoy their first taste of ballet with My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty across the UK. We’re thrilled to return to the Royal Albert Hall with Derek Deane’s Swan Lake in-the-round in June: there is little in ballet as breathtaking as the sight of 60 swans moving in unison at the centre of the Hall. Don’t miss it. We remain committed to encouraging and developing the talents of our dancers, so our annual Emerging Dancer competition returns back in the Spring. Finally, we cannot wait to present our ambitious evening of new works choreographed by three world-class dance makers: Aszure Barton, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Yabin Wang. I have been following their careers for a while and I am very pleased that they will be working with us. She Said is at Sadler’s Wells in April. We do hope you will join us this season – we are sure that there will be something to inspire, astonish and thrill you.

A poignant reflection on World War I After moving audiences and astounding critics at its premiere in London in 2014, this groundbreaking dance evening returns with performances in London, Manchester and Milton Keynes. Lest We Forget features three works expressing the experiences of those who fought the war, and those who stayed behind. Drawing on superb design and evocative scores, Liam Scarlett, Russell Maliphant and Akram Khan, three of the most sought-after choreographers working today, have created dance works full of unforgettable and haunting images. Liam Scarlett’s No Man’s Land evokes the entwined destinies of the women working in munition factories at home and the men fighting in the trenches, through emotional pas de deux set to a score by Liszt. Twenty dancers tilt and sway in semi-darkness, rising and falling, in Second Breath, a “devastatingly effective” (Daily Telegraph) piece by Russell Maliphant set to recordings of survivors and a live orchestra. With “dancing full of pain and power” (Independent), a pounding soundtrack and atmospheric lighting, Akram Khan’s Dust grabs you from the start and does not let go. It won the Best Modern Choreography prize at the 2014 Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards.

Love and betrayal on the high seas Le Corsaire (The Pirate) follows the escapades of a dashing pirate, Conrad, who journeys across the high seas to save his beautiful harem girl, Medora. It is a swashbuckling fantasy tale of captive maidens and cutthroats, love and betrayal, culminating in a shipwreck which is one of the most breath-taking spectacles in ballet. Full of action, passion and romance, this classic story ballet has been reinvented by English National Ballet, the only UK company to perform the complete work. This extravagant production enthralled audiences and received rave reviews when it premiered in 2013. Staged by Anna-Marie Holmes, with stunning sets by Hollywood designer Bob Ringwood (Batman) and English National Ballet Philharmonic performing the sweeping, romantic score, Le Corsaire is an unmissable, entertaining adventure.

Give your children their first taste of the magical world of ballet

24 Mar – 2 Apr 2016 PEACOCK THEATRE, LONDON

My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty is an enchanting version of the fairy tale ballet created especially for children aged three upwards.

8 – 9 Apr 2016 NORWICH THEATRE ROYAL

As a baby, Princess Aurora is cursed by the evil Carabosse: on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Her godmother the Lilac Fairy alters the spell so Aurora will not die but will sleep for 100 years, only to be awoken by true love’s kiss. From Aurora’s christening in the grand hall of the palace, to her jubilant wedding celebrations, the popular fairy tale comes alive on stage. With a narrator to help the young audience follow the story, and a shortened version of Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous music, this is the perfect introduction to the beauty of ballet, and a fantastic family day out. My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty is choreographed by George Williamson and performed by second-year students of English National Ballet School. Since its creation in 2012, 150,000 people have enjoyed our My First Ballet series.

Celebrating the talent of tomorrow’s stars. Success in ballet requires a huge amount of hard work, talent and creative curiosity. Through this annual event, English National Ballet recognises the excellence of its artists.

We are the UK leader for Dance for Parkinson’s, a high quality dance programme offering people with Parkinson’s, their carers, friends and family members the opportunity to engage in artistic dance activity alongside a professional company.

Spring 2016 Venue to be announced ballet.org.uk/emergingdancer

Since 2010, we have worked with over 1,000 participants across the UK, engaging them in weekly dance classes, and giving them an insight into the way our productions are put together by meeting our dancers and orchestra, and invitations to rehearsals and performances.

Selected by their peers, six of our most promising dancers perform in front of an eminent panel of expert judges, before one receives the 2016 Emerging Dancer Award.

“It has encouraged us to try something new, exercise our bodies and minds. To forget I have Parkinson’s for a couple of hours a week has been a most positive experience.” Dance for Parkinson’s Participant.

This inspiring evening is a fantastic opportunity to watch our rising stars flourish, and witness how far their dedication has taken them. The recipient of the People’s Choice Award, selected by members of the public, will also be revealed at the end of the evening. Go to ballet.org.uk/peopleschoice to vote for your favourite dancer now.

Regular weekly classes are held in London at our studios in Kensington, and through regional hub partner organisations in Oxford (Oxford City Council), Liverpool (MDI – Merseyside Dance Initiative), Ipswich (DanceEast) and Cardiff (National Dance Company of Wales). Taster sessions are organised regularly for new participants to drop in and find out more.
