back to school! reuse and craft! ___________________ would bringing summer vacation toys and craft supplies back to school help ease kids’ transition back to school? this poster plays with vibrant colours to excite kids to go back-to-school. by trying to bring a sense of summer memories back to school, the poster asks students to bring their left over summer supplies to school. perhaps, this help kids feel less of a sudden jump back to learning and ease the ‘back-to school’ transition mentally!

screen grab of the launch video

the annual architecture party! ___________________ since the early 80’s, kosmic has been an annual architecture party at the azrieli school of architecture and urbanism. each year a group of students are formed to take care of this event -- they create a theme and connect with local venues, djs and plan installations with the school’s students. in 2020, covid-19 moved this event to be held virtually. the theme for 2020-2021 was “glitch.” all virtual events, contests, visuals and graphics were inspired and represented to mimic glitch -when a digital media encounters an error.

physical conceptual model

digital model

do you want to escape to your childhood ? ___________________ diasporic dreamland focuses on creating a utopian dreamland for childhood memories. i wanted to create an experience through a utopian lens by creating a space of childhood memories the specifically hold a strong tie with my chinese heritage. the project evolved to become a very personal project that touched on one my heritage.

physical model

the dreamland space ______________

digital model

through the four main memory types (procedural, semantic, episodic, and priming), i paired four of my childhood traditional chinese oral tales (the great race, monkey king, the cowherd and the weaver girl, and chang’e flying to the moon) to the matching memory type. these pairs then served as the four utopian locations for my dreamland / memory box. the form of the dreamland resembles the traditional chinese courtyards called “siheyuan” -- this acts as the foundation for my childhood (both literally and figuratively).

two models were created for this project -- a physical conceptual model and a digital model that represented the space and dreamland / memory box.

conceptual diagram

lets dream! ______________ the screen prints of the different dreamlands act as a base for the hand drawn memory and dreamland elements. the hand drawn illustrations (below) blend elements of the oral tales with my personal memories. they are then overlaid on the screen-prints to create a visual of the utopian dreamland.

urban housing design

conceptual (academic) ottawa, on

your backyard oasis getaway ___________________ the oasis was inspired by the site’s historical railway community and the current abandoned site where bits of nature pushed through concrete. this contrasting characteristic was used to create a sparkle in this urban housing community. from growing various secret gardens and meadows through steel structures, to having a movie/ entertainment square to meditation spaces, backyard oasis is able to bring a harmonious atmosphere through a juxtaposition of serene and animated elements. the oasis is a place of both zen and play.

the details___________________ highlighted above is the location of the detailed building design for “zen-zen.” zen-zen is a set of four mid-rise towers that is occupied with various units including townhouses, studios, and one to two bedrooms. the roof top is what connects all four sets -- each set’s rooftop has a different activity to accommodate residences needs: co-working space, active space, a zen space, and a garden space. in the middle of zen-zen, there is the site’s famous garden wheel. similar to a ferris wheel, it is rectangular and has rentable garden boxes.
