What is Emergency Lighting ? Emergency Lighting is a means of secondary illumination that must be provided immediately, when the supply to the normal lighting fails. The failure of the normal lighting may be caused by a major emergency situation like fire, earthquake, etc., or it may occur simply by the tripping of a circuit breaker. The minimum duration of emergency lighting is specified by local regulations and general requirement is from 1 to 3 hours. The secondary source of illumination may be a centrally located power supply (central battery systems) or it may be fitted inside the individual luminaires (self-contained emergency lighting).
