A N I N T RO D U CT I O N
Set in 300 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland, Rudding Park is a stunning hotel within a mature parkland setting. A privately owned luxury hotel, Rudding Park has 90 bedrooms, two restaurants and a kitchen garden, private cinema, two golf courses and conference and events space. Enjoy Design were commissioned by Rudding Park in Spring 2013 to extend their existing hotel with a new, contemporary spa facility which would provide for both day hotel and day guests. The origins of the word ‘spa’ are unknown, but there are two popular theories. One is that the word spa in Latin is an acronym of “salus per aquae” or “health from water” whereas some believe the origin of the
word ‘spa’ comes from a small Belgium village called Spa, where Roman soldiers would benefit from hot mineral springs to treat aching limbs following a battle. Whichever theory you adopt, utilising water to encourage health and well-being, with the ability to completely relax in a serene, tranquil environment has proved to have addictive qualities for many over the centuries. The new Rudding Park Spa is one of the finest in the country and recaptures Harrogate’s spa heritage using natural spring waters from the grounds at Rudding Park.

The Spa has been designed to be very spacious, light and airy, allowing guests the ability to explore the facilities at their own pace, moulding their experience to what they want to do, suiting their mood, at their speed. The design is one that is completely flexible in the way each guest will choose to use it, whilst flowing in a logical, well ordered manner. Most importantly, there is an overwhelming calmness and serenity from the minute you step out of your car and walk towards the reception through the exquisite, landscaped grounds. The experience within The Spa captures and continues the same feeling of tranquility, letting daylight, air and the natural environment form an essential part of the experience.
LOWER GROUND FLOOR
The Spa operates on three floors, with the lower ground floor containing the various treatment rooms along with associated relaxation spaces. The ground floor hosts the main reception, changing facilities, indoor pool, restaurant, hair & beauty, retail, rasul and juniper log sauna. On the first floor is the hydrotherapy pool, herbal steam room, scenic sauna and feature steam room all leading to the landscaped roof terrace which contains a further spa bath and log sauna.

The existing hotel has been developed and extended over a number of years, but has been consistently grounded by the historic, Listed house, courtyard and church buildings. The original buildings have equally formed the inspiration for The Spa, not in a pastiche way, but more in choice of materials, timeless elegance and solidity of form and function.

The complete design, from concept to the execution of the space planning and material selection, has been conceived with the intention of creating a calming, peaceful and relaxing experience. As a result, the guest experience is one of complete escapism and, most importantly, it is more than just few steam rooms and a pool – it is a complete spa experience in every sense of the word, capturing wellness of mind and body, leaving the guest totally rejuvanated.

At the heart of the spa is the internal pool with a south facing aspect leading to an open terrace, capturing the ‘outside / inside’ concept. Open on three sides, the pool has a feature wall to the fourth, enclosing the space, generating a secluded, private environment to unwind in. In contrast, the hydrotherapy pool allows completes submersion within the internal lobby before moving to the open air environment and tending to aching muscles with a selection of air and water jets.

Natural products have been specified throughout, with copper, steel and contrasting hardwoods featuring heavily within the treatment rooms and heat rooms. The materials provide a very tactile experience and, in the case of the juniper log sauna, an aromatic infused environment to aid relaxation and well-being.

A variety of opportunities have been provided for more private relaxation and bathing, with the twin copper bath being one example. In true attention to detail, the location of the champagne bucket was seen as an integral part of the experience.

Latin for ‘kitchen garden’, Horto Restaurant has been awarded 3 AA Rosettes in the Awards for Culinary Excellence 2017-18, placing it in the top 10% of restaurants/hotels within the AA Restaurant Guide. Forming part of the Horto Restaurant, the zinc, copper and waxed steel bar continues the specification of natural materials within the interior design, providing a very tactile finish. The bar area provides a more informal dining experience within the restaurant.

The Horto Restaurant compliments the hotels existing dining facilities by offering a completely different menu, with a greater emphasis towards fine dining. A variety of seating configurations allows the flexible dining space to adapt to differing lunchtime and evening requirements.

The Spa is as much about the outside as the inside, in so much as the two seamlessly work in tandem with each other. The roof top terrace, with deep planted shrubs and trees, takes the spa experience into the landscape with open air spa baths, hydrotherapy pools and saunas that can be utilised throughout the year. The Spa is anything but a ‘closed box’ with all the features on the inside. With such a unique setting, the inside / outside approach completely merges into one. Natural daylight is a key element of ensuring wellbeing and design captures the ability to benefit from the natural elements in all weathers.
The external landscaped terrace provides further opportunities to bathe ‘al fresco’.

The Spa has been designed to work with the landscape from the outset, taking cognisance of existing topography and established, mature trees. The result is a building that sits quietly within a natural environment, further enhanced by the fully landscaped roof terrace.
The retail area within The Spa reception provides a unique array of gifts, with an emphasis towards high quality design, capturing the very essence of the Spa itself.
The scale of the building has been disguised, with a good deal of the required accommodation below ground, allowing the new spa to be deceivingly large, yet sitting low, and subservient to the historic hotel, with just a simple, glass pavilion capturing the reflection of the adjacent landscape and being lost in the park land scenery as a result.
