Batavia Main Street This community organization produces an action-packed calendar of events year-round in downtown Batavia, including Second Fridays and the Batavia Farmers Market, as well as signature events like BatFest, Batavia Oktoberfest, and the Downtown Block Party & Taste of Batavia.
SEE & DO
Fermilab Contemporary art and architecture are a going concern at Fermilab thanks to the vision of its founding director, Robert Wilson, who insisted the site be more aesthetically compelling than a collection of block buildings. Fermilab’s Art & Lecture Series hosts globally recognized speakers and live entertainment at the campus’s Ramsey Auditorium.
In Batavia you’ll find a quaint, historic Main Street lined with boutique shops and intimate locales for dinner and drinks. A sinuous Riverwalk dotted by a collection of windmills hearkens back to Batavia’s early industrial role as the leading windmill manufacturer in the United States. Today, Batavia is known for another type of energy entirely: dark matter. Founded in 1967, Fermilab is the U.S. Department of Energy’s most publicly accessible site, where fundamental questions of the physical universe are investigated by an international team of scientists. Fermilab’s Natural Areas offer over 6,800 acres of pristine wilderness and wildlife, and are home to a photogenic herd of American bison, one of the region’s most popular attractions. Visitors spending time in Batavia should be sure to check out Batavia’s Farmers Market, where you can shop from a collection of artisan breadmakers, coffee roasters, and farm-fresh produce stands on the River Street woonerf (a Dutch-inspired brick-laid shared space for pedestrians and autos). An actionpacked calendar of festivals and events attracts locals and visitors alike to Batavia’s charming downtown shops, eateries, and gallery receptions at Water Street Studios. Fun for the whole family is available year-round at Funway, the largest entertainment center of its kind in Illinois. The area’s oldest swimming facility is also its largest.
