beauty and the beat Adventures In Makeup With Shirley Manson And Her Lifetime MAC Account Card We have the beauty department at Miss Selfridge in London to thank for Shirley Manson’s signature look. “When I was young I worked behind the makeup counter,” the Garbage frontwoman and nineties alt-rock icon recalls. The experience left its mark on the Edinburgh native: “I love makeup—it can transform somebody, and there’s an escapist element to it. So I have always loved it,” she says, letting out a loud, guttural laugh before adding, “It’s a great pleasure in my life!” Anyone who has watched Manson perform onstage, seen her in a music video, or spotted her on the cover of a magazine knows this all too well: Between her alabaster skin, always-bold choice in lipsticks, and trademark fire-engine-red tresses, the musician has never shied away from embracing the beauty world and all it has to offer. Remarkably, that’s still the case; after a break from the band and a stint on TV, Manson has returned to the stage with her fifth album for Garbage, Not Your Kind of People—and she looks better than ever. Before heading out on a European tour, the vocalist and guitarist spoke with Style.com about her evolving views on face-painting and coming to terms with her hair before spilling the beans on the existence of perhaps the most covetable item on earth: the lifetime MAC account card. —Rebecca Willa Davis

Does that apply to your personal style, too? I would have to say my style—if indeed I have a style—has most definitely changed. A lot of that is to do with the fundamentals of aging, and obviously I’m more economically secure than I once was, so I can actually afford to dress myself. When I first entered the scene I literally had no money. It would be pretty scary if I was 45 years old and still in tiny mini-skirts and Dr. Martens boots [laughs]. Has your relationship with makeup also evolved as you’ve gotten older?

I have to confess to maybe the biggest luxury in my life, a lifetime MAC account card that was gifted to me when I became a MAC spokesperson. It’s It definitely feels different. To take so much time off, incredible: I’m allowed to go into any store anywhere in the world and pick out what I want. And I often do! you get a real chance to get some perspective on And I’ve been lucky enough to be gifted all kinds of what happened to us, the band. You get a clearer delicious treats from makeup companies, because idea of what we want to do and how we want to they know I love it and they know I’ll use it and they do it. The industry has changed so much since we know I’m photographed. entered it. But that’s life; it’s constantly changing. We wouldn’t want it to stay the same!

It’s been seven years since Garbage’s last album. Does it feel different this time around?

That is crazy (and awesome). How else do you preThat sounds like every beauty lover’s dream! Having tried so many products, which rank among your pare for touring? favorites? I go to an amazing woman [in L.A.] for facials, and My favorite red [lipstick] of all-time is [MAC’s] Lady my skin has never looked so good since she got Danger. It’s just perfect for my skin—it’s got orange her hands on it. Her name’s Dee Bartolo, and she’s incredible. If I go have a facial with her, the benefits undertones, so it really suits me. But I [am] very of it last for two weeks, so I try to see her, like, the partial to the new Tom Ford line. And Make Up For day before I leave. And she sets me up with my Ever, actually. There’s a bunch. I could go on endwhole kit and gives me a bunch of masks for emerlessly forever talking about my favorite lipstick gencies. colors. You’ve got your signature red lipstick, but what about your hair? Who is your go-to guru? I go to Lucy Shultz at Peter Ishkhans [at Joseph Martin Salon] in Beverly Hills, and ever since I met Lucy, my hair’s been perfect. And that’s the first time in my life! Wait, you haven’t always loved your hair? It’s so iconic! No, I didn’t! It took me a long time to fall in love with my red hair. I was a lot older when I finally accepted and then began to adore having red hair, realizing that actually to be different and a little bit off-center, that’s a wonderful thing, but it took me a long time. I was always having trouble finding the right shade, and because I was touring so much, I’d have somebody in a different city doing my hair. It would be months, and I just had literally rainbow reds in my hair. Now with Lucy it’s perfect, and she calls ahead to any salon in any city I may be in and organizes my color process so I finally have someone taking ridiculously good care of me.

There’s a whole new roster of bands you’ll be playing with at festivals this summer. Of this new generation of female musicians—which you’ve undoubtedly had a big impact on—are there any who you’re particularly excited about? I’m crazy about Azealia Banks. Every time I hear her I feel a pang of utter jealousy. She’s so great at what she does, right out of the box, she’s just exploded. And that song “212″ I think is a work of genius, actually [laughs]. I love a lot of the young girls that are coming out right now, and it’s exciting to watch them bloom and grow and just forge their own path; it’s different from mine, but it’s wonderful to watch.

lingerie / swimwear spring / summer 2012 colors Interfiliere are always the first to release their take on any season’s colour trends, and for spring / summer 2012 it’s no different. As a part of the swimwear and lingerie industry the colours they reveal as having frequency and prominence are usually limited to their part of the fashion industry. While some of these colours may be dominant amongst spring 2012′s clothing trends, we should caution that there’s no guarantee of it. Unfortunately, at this stage Interfiliere have not released the Pantone codes for their analysis of the spring 2012 colours. However, reading from left to right and starting with the colour swatch above, they’re seeing the following colours as trends for beachwear and intimates:

there is only one way In the 80s, Vivienne Westwood was instrumental in bringing about the punk revolution, continuing to this day to subvert traditional notions of dress. To this day, various game changers in the fashion industry have shown that exploring different ways of dressing, well away from the mainstream, is perfectly acceptable, even encouraged. This has given rise to Alternative fashion, which basically defines anything that has at one period of time stood out from the mainstream. From those that decided that their skin shall be the emblem of their artistic soul, to those that proudly wear purple hair. To those that want to live, be, art. Once people understand that it is not a crime to either follow trends, or shun them, or adopt something completely different, I think people will be more accepting towards each other. It’s all about artistic expression. Now some of you may be going “I am so totally confused right now.” What I want to show by the following images are the different ways people express themselves-some may call it alternative, some may not. In any case, its different from ‘mainstream’(whatever that is).

Few fashion bloggers show extremely interesing, artistic outfits as Susie Bubble. You need an incredibly aesthetic eye to put together such a perfect, original outfit, that goes way beyond just finding out what suits you, and which enters the realm of what impact an outfit has on the wearer and on the observer.

They are beautiful dresses, that make these women look stunning. It’s a ball after all. But in my opinion, fabric conveys a better image when its intention was not primarily to make the woman look go.

Before getting on to serious business though, I would like to sincerely thank Khatleen Minerve and Radjiv Dave who sent me beautiful articles on the subject so that I was better informed before writing. Thank you!

This really conveys a simple, devastating image: I am covered, yet I am exposed. I draw attention to me, without drawing attention to my body. I am a symbol. Modelling agents shunned from tattooed models. Now it is desired. No-one is more ‹it› than Bradely Soileau right now.

I was originally going to write a whole essay on how what is in fashion is epitomised by a particular decade and that the events of that decade really help shape fashion, but it would be getting too far off the subject (next time, guys). For now, all you need to know is that there is no singular definition of beauty of fashion.

Fashion is for everyone. So is style. It›s refreshing to see some change than the usual, traditionally composed outfit, non? A word of warning: pulling off an outfit a la Susie Bubble takes time and patience in order to get each piece perfectly working with the other. But it is totally worth it.

f o l k s y c l o t h i n g : o f t h e p e o p l e, for the fashion set Traditional folk costume is experiencing a modern revival. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli wove an enchanting tale on the Valentino Fall runway, showing floral embroidered dresses and tapestry coats that evoked the peasantry (granted, there was nothing common about these clothes). Then Erdem Moralioglu went Amish on us with a crafty new Resort collection full of hexagonal patchwork quilting motifs. Earlier this week, Marc Jacobs got into the mix with stiff A-line frocks overlaid with lace that were fit for a matryoshka doll. Speaking of, you can often spot real-life Russian doll Ulyana Sergeenko preening for the street-style photographers in her own old-world-inspired designs. —Brittany Adams
