The Subdued Stringband Jamboree, August 6-8 by Deborah M. Bernard What do you get when you invite the best musicians from The City of Subdued Excitement to a three-day performing/ jamming/camping extravaganza? You get a 21st Century Hootenanny: the 15th annual Subdued Stringband Jamboree, happening August 6, 7, and 8 on the 180 manicured acres of the Deming Log Show Grounds. The event was founded by musician Robert Sarazin Blake, who said the Jamboree is about “celebrating music in the roots tradition. We aim to bring together the best of the old and the new, including singer-songwriter, old-time, bluegrass, klezmer, honky-tonk, gypsyjazz, country, western swing, and Irish music.” Blake’s music incorporates folk music, traditional Celtic songwriters, punk rock, and blues, “all blended together with a heavy dose of improvisation,” which produces a speed strumming style, a perfect backdrop to his narrative singer/ songwriter style. Three dozen groups will perform during the Jamboree, including Grace Love and the True Loves, an original Seattle soul music group that reprises the best of the 1970’s funk/blues/gospel music; the Bellingham Ceili Club, great Irish music; Robert T. McDonald III, emerging guitarist performing acoustic folk genres; the Broken Book Stringband, a bluegrass group from Bellingham; the Bellingham Circus Guild, which encourages fans to “run away with the circus;” plus many more. Blake’s goal is to share great local music from Whatcom and Skagit counties with the community. “The focus has remained consistent over the years. The line-up is still local bands with a few blow-ins to kick us in the pants. We now have a campground full of tents, guitars, coolers, and banjos surrounding two stages, creating three nights and two days of pickin’, singin’, and stompin’.” No electric keyboards are allowed, and a tuned upright piano is available. Blake tours and performs 200 shows a year, many in Ireland and Europe. He has been called “a world class performer in a neighborhood venue, who is devoted to the connection within live performance.” “The average Irishman encounters live music much more often than we Americans. The Jamboree is trying to
change that,” Blake said. “Ours is a decidedly different way of having a festival—local acts that invite their family and musicians they know. I want to make this music available to everyone, not just the late-night bar crowd. Early risers need live music too!” The Jamboree is so kidfriendly that it feels like a family reunion. Especially if your family played at the original Woodstock, or are people who love and live music. There is a Kids’ Parade on Saturday at 2pm and artistic and active adventures and play throughout the festival. A special stage was built right in front where the
youngsters can get close to the musicians. Workshops where kids and adults can bring their instruments and learn with the performers happen throughout the jamboree. There are sections of the campground: some are quiet after sunset, so kids can go to sleep. Some have no kids, so musicians who have jammed late can sleep in. “Jamming 24 hours a day is encouraged,” Blake said. The first Jamboree happened in 2001, when local musician friends decided that “Bellingham needs a festival!” That year, 150 people came, and the musicians played music, took tickets, hung lights, and picked up trash. Now, about 900 people a day come, and there is an army of over 100 volunteers who help park

cars, direct people to camping spots, act as stage crew and grounds crew, and work in the ‘Sub-Dudes’ gift shop. Food vendors include some of the best purveyors of food in Bellingham: The Table/Bellingham Pasta Company, the Leaf & Ladle, Alice’s Pies, Churchill’s Oven, Diego’s Mexican Grill, The Green Frog, Kurly’s Kart, Gypsies and Gingersnaps, and Little One’s Beverages. Campground security is provided by the iconic roller derby queens, The Bellingham Roller Betties. (No, I am not making this up.) Local sponsors have made the Jamboree possible since Day One. Boundary Bay Brewery “has supported us since before we knew what a sponsor was.” Generous support from dozens of local businesses “have helped make the Jamboree subdued.” Everybody from the Community Food Co-op to Great Harvest Bread Company to The Pickford Film Cinema and dozens or others contribute. Jamboree goers may arrive by 10am Thursday to claim their campground sites, from the general, to the “seriously subdued” quieter campsites “for those who need to sleep.” Camping is $10 a night. Cars are $20 a night. RVs are $25 a night, advance reservations seriously recommended. Camping is free for bicyclists, and parking outside is free. Advance Jamboree tickets are $35 per day or $75 for a Weekend Pass, camping not included. Tickets purchased at the gate are $40 per day or $120 for the Weekend Pass. New this year is a $25 Evening Pass valid after 7pm on Saturday night. For more info, visit www.stringbandjamboree.com.

PAPO Celebrates Tenth Anniversary! building where Studio UFO flourishes. “Imagine if the twenty-some artists enjoying studios here in Bay Street Village were booted from their spaces. So a group of us decided to bring public attention to the importance of artists working in our community. We wanted lots of artists on the streets so the public could see us painting. We exist. Painters are a necessary part of Bellingham.” This year, as many as thirty artists of all skill levels will gather along Holly Street to paint. This inclusive event isn’t based on the artist’s ability, but rather on commitment. The painter must complete an 8x10 painting between 9am and 5pm. Additionally, the artist must submit a 3x5 thumbnail in black ink of the chosen scene. The thumbnail will hang below the
by Nancy Canyon PAPO – Downtown Bellingham’s Plein Air Paint Out — is celebrating its 10 year anniversary, August 29 from 9am-5pm. Come witness a time-honored tradition when as many as thirty artists set up along Holly Street, with paints organized, canvases secured to easels, musicians playing in the background. Each artist’s goal is to paint a unique scene representing downtown Bellingham by 5pm that day. Trish Harding, the founder of PAPO, explains that she believes an artist’s skill improves with en plein air painting. Working freely in natural light grows the artist’s understanding of color, value, and composition. I nodded my agreement, as I can see the difference between my en plein air paintings and my studio paintings, though I’m primarily a studio painter; painting from perception while the wind blows or a sprinkle dampens your gear or the sun goes behind clouds is alluring to many artists. And of course, the French considered peinture sur le motif (what one actually sees) a traditional study. Great masters such as Monet, Pissarro and Renoir painted from life, hauling canvases and easels outside to capture skies, ponds, pastoral scenes, and busy villages. During PAPO 2006, I set up my easel north of Fourth Corner Frames. All day I wrestled my unruly Granary painting. The shadows were in one place, then another; the sky changed from dark to light and back again. I chased the painting, frustrated by the end of the day.

At right: All artists are asked to create a rough small sketch of their composition. These are displayed so that the community can see the first step in the process.
However, many thought my painting was a success, especially the Humane Society who happily raised $250 from the painting’s donation to their fundraising auction. Harding says PAPO came about ten years ago when a rumor spread through the artist community that the City of Bellingham was going to gentrify downtown. “We all know what happens with gentrification,” Harding says. “Artists can no longer afford to pay the more expensive per-square-foot price and are forced to move out of the area.” She waved a hand around indicating the

painting at Mindport Gallery, 210 West Holly Street, on Friday, September 18, from 6-8pm. Cash and merchandise awards will be presented during the reception. PAPO charges $55 to participate, which includes a beautiful gold frame worth $75. Artists must deliver their en plein air paintings to Mindport by 5pm the day of the paint out or they will be disqualified. Fourth Corner Frames (www.fourthcornerframes.com) will provide framing. The show at Mindport Gallery (www.mindport.org) will be curated and hosted by AnMorgan Curry. Artists receive eighty percent of sales. This August, come stroll along Holly and meet the PAPO artists. See what unique scenes they’re painting, maybe develop a friendship with an artist from our community, and see what he or she is working on throughout the year. Sculpture Northwest’s new gallery (203 Prospect St., Suite 101, Bellingham) continues through Aug. 16. Lummi Island Artists’ Studio Tour Labors On by Marla Bronstein For an art-filled, Labor Day Weekend option, consider attending this year’s Lummi Island Artists’ Studio Tour. Studios that are not usually accessible to the public will be open 10am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6. Ria Nickerson, a potter who specializes in stoneware and owns Good Thunder Arts, founded this tour more than 25 years ago. Since then, Lummi Island has been hosting weekend tours over Labor Day, Memorial Day and one weekend in November. Each tour has included the works of 15 to 40 studio artists at various locations all over Lummi Island. Some artists open their personal studios, others show their wares in group settings. The artists include potters, sculptors, jewelers, photographers, fiber artists, and painters. Ria Harboe, a talented artist in her own right, helps coordinate the tours every year. (What are the chances that Nickerson would find someone to partner with to organize the event who had the same first name?) While the full roster of artists was not completed in time for this publication, returning artists include Diana Pepper and John Robinson of Tree Frog Farm, who will open their labyrinth garden and offer essence consultations. Lynn Dee, a potter, will have a Raku sculpture demonstration. Visitors will be able to watch her fire her work with a propane tank each day, as well as the post-firing reduction. Art Hohl, a glassworker, will showcase his colorful fused and slumped glasswork. The Carriage House Gardens at 2272 North Nugent will host a variety of artists, as

The artists can use any medium or material they wish. While some artists will meticulously plan ahead, taking measurements of their assigned door days before the event, others will just show up on Friday evening, materials in hand, and create in the moment. Last year, Katy Tolles, Artist Services Coordinator for Allied Arts was blown away by the work created by artist Kathryn Hackney. Hackney’s completed door was a stunning autumn mountain-scape with a stream, using a limited color palate of white, black and burnt sienna. Spectators may choose their favorite door by tipping the artists, who will receive 100% of voters’ tips. The team that receives the most money in tips will also receive a $100 gift certificate to the 2015 Allied Arts’ Holiday Festival of the Arts. At the end of the Throwdown, the doors will be sold in a silent auction to benefit Allied Arts. The artists will have

Art Uncorked to benefit Bellingham Childcare and Learning Center by Laurel Larsen
The summer season is filled with gatherings—family reunions, backyard barbecues, and other adventures. But one special event brings people together to support and celebrate one of our community’s most beloved childcare organizations. Thursday, August 20, at 5:30pm, Bellingham Childcare and Learning Center will host their 3rd Annual Art Uncorked event at the Squalicum Boathouse. Bellingham Childcare and Learning Center was established over 25 years ago to provide early childhood education and care for Bellingham families. With a sliding
scale and over 70 students, the nonprofit organization relies heavily on community support to provide care for children ages one month to five years. The Center is also of an elite class of providers who have earned and maintained National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation. The 25+ employees provide a loving and age-appropriate home away from home, including nutritious meals prepared on site. The Center takes the care of every child seriously and the needs of every family
into consideration, but they also manage to throw a fantastic summer party! The Art Uncorked event includes art of all kinds, procured carefully by the Board of Directors to suit a variety of tastes and budgets. There will even be special art items created by each of the classrooms at the Center. With live music, a raffle, and lots of wine and niblets, Art Uncorked is a perfect way to spend a warm Thursday evening. A casual affair, Art Uncorked tickets are $40 and include food, wine, and a raffle ticket. Tickets may be purchased online at www.bellinghamchildcare.org , or by calling the Center at 360-676-0950. Not able to attend but want to contribute? Call Karen Ekdahl, Some of the staff at Bellingham Executive Director, to talk about art Childcare and Learning Center. or financial donations. Cheers!

BrewFest on the Skagit by Osa Hale What two things do we love in the Northwest? Two things that no great party could go without? Music and beer—both local, of course. That simple, yet potent, combination is the premise of Brewfest on the Skagit, a festival celebrating local craft breweries and talented musicians. The BrewFest, now in its 13th year, is a tradition that has been enjoyed by the community since its inception. Put on by the historic Lincoln Theatre as a fun-filled fundraiser, the festival will be taking place on Saturday, August 8, from 4-9pm. This year, attendants can look forward to a lot of exciting changes, says Mary Mae Hardt, who has been coordinating the event. “We are celebrating a number of changes this year from a name change to Brewfest on the Skagit (known in the past as Porterhouse BrewFest) to moving from the streets of downtown Mount Vernon to a brand new beautiful gathering place, the Skagit Riverwalk Park,” Hardt said. The BrewFest is also being moved to an earlier time, so it becomes a late afternoon/early evening event. One more change to anticipate? There will be featured beers and ciders from new brewers, including Chuckanut Brewery, Kulshan Brewing Company, Island Hoppin’ Brewery, Snoqualmie Falls Brewery, 7 Seas Brewing, and Schilling Cider. This is in addition to returning brewers such as The Pike Brewing Company, North Sound Brewery, Anacortes Brewery, Birdsview Brewing Company, and the Urban Family Brewing Company. The growing list of brewers reflects a regional trend, Hardt says. “Craft brewing in this region is growing phenomenally like everywhere else. Here in Skagit Valley we are also experiencing the agricultural benefit of specialized malts for small craft beers being grown here,” she explained.
“BrewFest on the Skagit is a great opportunity to sample many of our regional craft brews.”

Anacortes Arts Festival by Osa Hale Spanning ten blocks of downtown Anacortes, taking Friday-Sunday, August 7, 8, and 9, the Anacortes Arts Festival features 280 artisans, live music on three stages, workshops, delicious regional food, and a fine arts show; there’s literally something for everyone, according to Rita James, the festival’s creative manager. That means that they are able to give back quite a bit to the community. Chelsea Stone, Booth Artisan: Eye Candy Jewelry by artist and teacher Chelsea Stone is a delightful mix of handmade glass beads, luminescent cast glass, outrageous enamels, colorful gemstones, and semi-precious metals.
“We are a non-profit and fund arts programs throughout the year. This year we are giving back approximately $80,000, much of it to education and cultural enrichment for kids,” James said. “It is a big small town event that is so much fun—and it transforms our town!” Despite having a long history, the AAF is always full of surprises. This year, James says one of the big additions is a Locals Night, the first night of the festival. Built to feel like a big party, the night will feature art booths, music, a fine arts show, food, and beer garden, all open until 8pm. The music will range from Creme Tangerine (a Beatles tribute band) to country rocker Chance McKinney to the Cuban salsa stylings of Camalanche. That night, perfect for community members, is just a taste of the fun to come. During the weekend, guests can look forward to new workshops like the Steamroller Block Printing work studio. There will also be areas for 3D chalk painting, blacksmithing, fabric marbling and many more mediums to try. There will be an innovative new environmental project, titled Tide Craft, which will feature artwork

created from marine debris found on local beaches. That isn’t the only part of the festival that will incorporate the town’s seaside nature, James says. “Because we’re an island community, we have expanded events on the waterfront. Our fine art show is housed in a rustic port warehouse that opens onto the Guemes Channel, and outside on the dock are a waterfront pub (with beer, wine, margaritas and vodka cocktails), and a stage,” James said. The event is family-friendly; though there is a beer garden, there is also an all-ages covered eating area. The creative activities run the gamut from workshops with heavy
