Haynie Opry Celebrates 10th Anniversary by Deborah M. Bernard Ever wish you could go to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where country music icons and local performers share the stage in that great country music tradition? Well, thanks to the Haynie Opry in Blaine, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this season, you can! The Haynie Opry is the vision of country recording artist Matt Audette. He grew up a stone’s throw from the Haynie Grange, then spent years on the road as a touring musician. “My premise when I started this Opry was to bring in celebrity artists to share the stage with local and regional talent. I didn’t want it to be in a bar, where people drink while listening to music. I wanted it to be something people would bring their kids to and that the community could enjoy,” Audette said. The Haynie Grange, built in 1920, proved to be the perfect fit for Audette’s dream. The managers were tickled with the idea, and an Opry was born. The nearest Opry is 1600 miles away, in Apache Junction, Arizona, Audette said. If you build it, they will come, and come they did.

The lineup on both nights: Matt Audette and Circle of Friends Band; D’vas and Dudes, a country bluegrass ensemble; Claudette Dykstra Sterk, a gospel vocalist; Howard and Sandy Andreasen, husband-and-wife gospel duet; and Connie Holtzheimer, country vocalist. The Honeybees, a popular all-girl act, back by popular demand, will perform Saturday night only.

“Jack Greene, who performed in 2010, was the first Nashville Grand Old Opry artist to sing at a Washington state grange since Loretta Lynn sang at the Delta Grange Hall in Custer in the 1960s,” Audette said. Master yodeler Rod Erickson and Tommy Overstreet have also graced the stage. Celebrating its tenth season, the Haynie Opry presents its Country, Gospel, and Americana Music Extravaganza June 12 and 13 at 7pm at the Haynie Grange in Blaine.

and Winnifred “Winnie” Van Dyke, for “making homemade goodies for everyone to enjoy.” “I want to thank my Mom, Marion. She was my rock. And my dad, Rene. He was a WW2 vet who inspired me to play the guitar.” They’ve both passed away now, but Audette feels like they are looking down from heaven saying, “Hey! We made the cover of Entertainment News Northwest!” “I give God all the glory,” he said. “He’s guided me all these years. I’m geared up for another 10 years!” Audette wants to start another Opry in Skagit County. Anyone interested, and for more information on the shows, call Matt at 360-366-3321. Gala Concert Celebrates 100 Years of the Bellingham Music Club by Scott Henderson Music comes alive when performers share a strong personal connection. Experience this phenomenon on June 21, when nineteen professional musicians from around the world gather for a concert of uncommon quality. Bellingham’s “Concert of the Century” will celebrate 100 years of music-making by the Bellingham Music Club (BMC), one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the nation. This concert will benefit BMC’s Student Awards, perpetuating a century of commitment to young musicians. The afternoon concert will star nine string players, four worldclass pianists, operatic and recital vocalists, and a guitarist. Each received early training here in the Northwest, and all but three were BMC Award winners. Eight of the string players share another unique bond. They were students of Whatcom County’s revered string teacher and mentor, Joanne Donnellan, herself a BMC Award winner in 1961 (see sidebar). Co-producers Jack Frymire and Isabelle Cormier programmed a lively combination of solo and ensemble works, among them the Prelude to Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” performed by string players Joanne Donnellan, Grant Donnellan, Lisa D. Toner, Roman Yearian, Jeffrey Johnson, David Quiggle, Nick Strobel, Jonathan Thomson and Douglas Johnson. Piano works by Ravel and Poulenc will be performed by Angelo Rondello, Cole Anderson and Siyuan Li, and art songs by Vaughan Williams, Strauss, and Rachmaninov, will be sung by Stuart Lutzenhiser and Tracy R. Satterfield. The strings will join soprano Lindsey Nakatani and flutists Debbie Arthur and Nirvana Guernsey for a Mozart aria; pianist Madeline Slettedahl for Schubert’s famed “Trout Quintet;” and Quiggle and Rondello for a “Twilight Serenade” by Turina; then climax with the finale of Mendelssohn’s brilliant “String Octet.” Los Angeles guitarist Albert Diaz provides an evocative work by Du an Bogdanovi. Two works will be familiar from recent movie scores, Boccherini’s Passa Calle heard in Master and Commander and the sensuous Tango by Gardél from Scent of a Woman. The Club’s current president, Kristin Van Schelt, praised the musicians. “It is beautiful to see these artists, many experiencing the first successes of promising careers, coming together to pay tribute to their teacher and mentor, Joanne Donnellan,” she said. “I find it meaningful that they are here to benefit

BMC’s Student Awards, which will continue to encourage musicians for generations.” Nurturing young talent is at the very heart of the BMC’s 100-year history. The first meeting was in February of 1916, violinist Mrs. C. X. Larrabee and conductor Mme. Mary Davenport Engberg presiding. As a women’s organization, it soon became the heart of Bellingham’s musical life, with

private recitals raising funds for occasional awards to student musicians at Western Normal School. Over the decades the club evolved, opening its membership to men in the 1980s. The focus on young talent became a stronger part of the mission, and the award program was expanded to annual prizes for piano, voice, and orchestral instruments. Today, the nearly 200-member organization is growing in size and diversity, while continuing to nurture promising young musicians.

Joanne Donnellan is Guest Of Honor at BMC’s Concert of the Century Joanne Donnellan can rightfully lay claim to inspiring and enriching at least two generations of musicians in western Washington. But the scope of her influence extends so much further, over musical disciplines, geography, and time. Retired since 2001 from her thirty-three year career as a high school orchestra and string teacher in Ferndale, she is revered for touching the lives of thousands of students through her teaching. Her gifts to the musical community were rightly recognized with a half-dozen national and local teaching awards. Putting her teaching and love of music into practice, she helped form a community orchestra in 1975, which would become the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, and served as its Concertmaster for 26 years before passing the chair to her son, Grant. She continues to volunteer with the orchestra’s School Outreach programs. On Sundays, she can be heard playing her violin at Christ Lutheran Church in Ferndale. Joanne and her husband Jon have two sons, not surprisingly both professional violinists; WWU Professor Grant, and Glenn, a violinist in the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. This July 3-19, the Festival returns to Bellingham to perform a repertoire of the finest symphonic music. Members of the orchestra come from major North American symphony orchestras where many of them are principal players. The Festival also features world famous guest artists and young rising stars. This season, the Festival will include five orchestral concerts, two chamber music concerts, two master classes and several free events. Since its inception in 1993, the Festival has been under the direction of conductor and musical director Michael Palmer. The solid musical foundation is due, in large part, to Maestro Palmer, who has attracted nationally and internationally respected musicians to Whatcom County. For a few weeks every summer, they present a series of symphony and chamber concerts. This year concerts will be held at the Performing Arts Center on the WWU Campus, at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, and in two locations in the Downtown Arts District. Dr. Robert D. Lynch, has been the Festival Chair for the past two years. When Dr. Lynch’s wife happened to be visiting Bellingham about ten years ago, she attended a Festival concert that coincided with her visit. She went home to Chicago and told him about Bellingham. Both of them have a deep love of music, (each holding post-graduate degrees in music.) When they retired from their jobs in 2008, they decided to make Bellingham their permanent home. Lynch believes that the continued success of the Festival is due to strong community support, through ticket sales, contributions, grants, welcome home concerts, and money raised at their annual auction. Dr. Lynch attributes much of the overall success of the festival to having a focused classical program. This season features music by composers who are identified, in part, by their national heritage, and represent personal and national struggles of great immediacy. There is not room here to detail all of the performances, but some of the highlights include: Revered as one of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most personal and emotional compositions, “Violin Concerto” (1878–1881), will be

performed by Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman. Another work by a composer closely connected to his national heritage is the “Seventh Symphony” (1884–1885) of Czech composer Antonín Dvorák. This concert also features Lynden native Katie Van Kooten in Richard Strauss’ last work, “Four Last Songs” (1848).

Alex Hanna, the great double bass virtuoso (and former principal bass of the Festival Orchestra), returns as soloist in the Vanhal ”Double Bass Concerto in E-flat major.” Programming also includes a piece to honor the 150th anniversary of Jan Sibelius’ birth—Finland’s most important and representative national composer. Not to be missed is the Calidore String Quartet, featuring Bellingham native Jeremy Berry. Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo Cohen will perform Johannes Brahms’s “First Piano Concerto.”

3rd Annual Bellingham Kids Traverse by Joanna Nesbit The multi-sport Bellingham Kids Traverse for kids ages 6-12 is back again at Civic Stadium. The multi-sport Traverse features the following course legs: 1-mile run, 1.5-mile mountain bike, and 1/2-mile obstacle course, followed by a final “team trek” across the finish line. Exhibit: “Helmi’s World: Symbol, Myth, Fantasy” – This exhibit presents

65 artworks (paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics) drawn from the Whatcom Museum’s collection of Helmi’s work, which numbers 250 objects. Some of her finest pieces are highlighted, including paintings of petroglyphs from Central Washington, and prints based on the Makah Wolf Dance experienced at Neah Bay. The exhibition suggests the complexity of Helmi’s vision by displaying some of her most unusual artworks, where images and symbols from a variety of cultures converge. The influences of Mark Tobey, Pablo Picasso, Scandinavian Folk Art, and Judeo-Christian and Buddhist iconography are also explored. Youth Workshops with WWU Summer Youth Theatre Institute by Joanna Nesbit This June, WWU’s Summer Youth Theatre Institute (SYTI) offers comprehensive theater workshops for stage-loving kids. The Institute offers workshops for elementary (entering grades 1-6) and secondary students (entering grades 7-12), and encourages all levels of experience. Kids learn a range of skills to put together a theatrical production, beginning to end, from script development to final performance. The elementary series runs June 24 to July 3, 9am-noon, with a showcase performance on July 3, 7pm. The secondary series runs June 23 to July 10, 1:30-4pm, with a showcase performance on July 10, 7pm. The final performances will be staged in WWU’s Old Main Theatre. Classes are held in the Performing Arts Center. Students in each workshop will learn improv, vocal and body warm-up techniques, monologue and scene writing, stage movement, blocking and directing, technical theater skill building, audition skill building, and choreography for the stage. The elementary theme is “Rock this House!” which guides song and story selection to go along with Summer Stock’s Schoolhouse Rock, Live production. The secondary theme is always “Encore!” With guidance from SYTI leaders, secondary students suggest and select their own performance material, ranging from Broadway, to movies, to books, to TV scenes. These dynamic workshops are taught by advanced WWU drama education students under the direction of Deborah Currier, associate professor of the Department of Theatre and Dance and program director of drama in education. The drama ed students have formal teaching skills and provide in-depth mentoring and coaching to camp participants. The camps are popular, and early sign-ups are recommended. Priority registration is June 15; registrations accepted after June 15 are on a “space available” basis. The elementary camp costs $180, and the secondary level is $300. Bard on the Beach by Osa Hale A warm summer evening, a gorgeous backdrop of lush mountains, the sparkling sea, and spectacular theatrical productions… The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival is a beloved dramatic tradition that is now in its 26th year. Presented at the captivating waterfront in Vanier Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, “the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival is a quintessential Vancouver summer experience,” says Heather Kennedy, the Festival’s director of marketing and communications. “It’s all about getting a chance to see an amazing combination of one of the world’s most beautiful physical locations and highquality professional theater. The magnificent tragedy is produced with classic Elizabethan costumes and setting, with the original Shakespearean dialogue. This production is infused with steampunk aesthetic, which is beautifully woven into the set and costumes by

Drawing much of its humor from the mistaken identity key to its plot (of two sets of long-lost twins being reunited, inciting confusion and hijinks), this play is a delight for the entire family. The farcical nature of the story is enhanced by the exquisitely bizarre visuals. Labour’s Lost, Shakespeare’s comedy about romance and temptation, gets a jazzy reboot and emerges as a musical set in Prohibition-era Chicago. With a smaller cast and reworked script, Director Daryl Cloran presents a modern take with plenty of musical numbers that will have audiences chuckling and tapping their toes. Finally, the fourth production is not a work of the Bard at all, but rather the global debut of a modern play about Shakespearean England. Shakespeare’s Rebel was first a novel, which was then adapted for the stage by its author (and now playwright) C.C. Humphreys.
