Pacific Northwest Opera presents Carmen Pacific Northwest Opera will present Georges Bizet’s ever-popular opera Carmen at McIntyre Hall (2501 E. College Way, Mount Vernon) November 4, 6, 11, and 13. Pacific Northwest Opera started as Skagit Opera, and this season changed its name to reflect its broader community. “We have board members now from Everett to Blaine, and audiences from Seattle to Vancouver, BC, and we changed the name to reflect that,” says Mitchell Kahn, now in his sixth year as general director. Fiery and tempestuous, the character of Carmen has captivated the world’s imagination for more than a century and a half. The passionate and untamed gypsy was first introduced in Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella and became immortal through Bizet’s opera 30 years later. She has been portrayed by stars from Rita Hayworth to Beyoncé, and her story told in flamenco, in hip-hop, in settings from the Netherlands to South Africa, in a Warner Brother’s cartoon, and in more than 70 films by directors as diverse as Charlie Chaplin and Jean-Luc Godard. “It is one of the three great operas that everyone wanting to learn about opera should start with: ABC—Aida, Boheme and Carmen, according to Pacific Northwest Opera’s general director, Mitchell Kahn. “It is a story of love and passion and a woman who refuses to be dominated.” Carmen was originally written for the Opéra Comique in Paris, and is a bridge between the more conservative French tradition and the verismo style that became popular in late-19th century Italy. After decades where opera was dominated by the Romantic movement— in which idealism and sentiment were the

aesthetic order of the day— verismo opera probed the passions of human existence through more realistic expression, reflecting life as it is lived, including all its sordidness and violence. Mezzo soprano Sarah Mattox who has mostly performed comedy for Skagit Opera, including her brilliant portrayal of the Witch in last year’s Hansel and Gretel, will be Carmen, a role she has sung in opera houses throughout the region. Her obsessed lover, Don Jose, will be tenor Benjamin Cleveland, making his debut. Soprano Christina Kowalski— Skagit Opera’s Tosca, Madam Butterfly and Norma among others—returns as Micaela, Jose’s abandoned girl-fromback-home. Another debut will be Russian bass-baritone Anton Belov as the dashing Escamillo, for whom Carmen dumps Jose. “As you can see, there is a lot of drama,” says Kahn. The opera takes place in Seville, and the production will be traditional, although Kahn assures that there will be no bull fighting. Tickets from $25-$59 are on sale at the McIntyre Hall box office

Peace on Earth: Cantabile Chamber Choir Holiday Concerts by Deborah M. Bernard Music has a magical ability to soothe, inspire, uplift, and heal. It can strike a resonant, spiritual chord in the hearts of listeners. Which is why the Cantabile Chamber Choir of Skagit Valley has chosen “Peace on Earth” as the theme for its holiday concerts this year. “The theme, ‘Peace on Earth,’ is especially relevant in the world we see right now,” said Ginny Ramey, the choir’s publicist and first alto singer. “Our music will include carols from many continents and both hemispheres–from lovely folk carols and quiet, meditative arrangements, to lively, percussive songs from Africa, Jamaica and Brazil,” she said. “The music will invoke both peace and joy, and we hope it will be an energizing and renewing experience for our audience.” The choir was born 11 years ago, when a small group of singers gathered to perform at the Habitat for Humanity Christmas Concert in La Conner. Out of that original group, Cantabile Chamber Choir was formed. “Cantabile” is a musical term meaning “songlike,” or “in a smooth, flowing, lyrical style.” Today, Cantabile has 25 members, and, “We are growing in membership and artistry,” Ginny said. Because entry into the choir is by audition only, “We have very experienced singers: vocal and instrumental professionals, music teachers, and even a jazz musician in our ranks. We are united in our goal of enhancing audience enjoyment of choral arts, and we continually strive for musical excellence,” she said. Another part of their mission is to mentor and encourage young singers in the community. Conductor and director, Stephen Marshall-Ward, has a doctorate in music from Oxford University. Also an organist and composer, he has written a special arrangement of “Silent Night” for the upcoming “Peace on Earth” concert. Cantabile’s very accomplished accompanist, Cheri Cook-Blodgett, also accompanies the Skagit Valley Chorale. A Labor of Love by Marla Bronstein If you have driven by 1600 H Street in the last few months, you may have noticed that that steel fencing is surrounding the Bellingham Theatre Guild (BTG) playhouse. The building is actively undergoing renovations that were first dreamed of in 2008. BTG’s Securing Our Foundation, Elevating Our Potential campaign goal was $950,000. That was the estimated cost to add an elevator for patrons with mobility issues and upgrade the building’s foundation to support the elevator while ensuring the construction would be a 100-year fix.

Campaign Committee member Francie Gass is adamant that without Campaign Consultant Duwain Hunt, BTG would not have raised the funds needed to renovate the building. Duwain has worked with many large community theaters and is associated with the American Association of Community Theatre. To date, they have raised more than $850,000 from about 250 donors, many of whom have long standing relationships with the organization, and who simply and unconditionally love BTG. One of the largest single donations ($100,000 for the installation of the elevator) came from the Rotary Club of Bellingham. The construction started in early July. Every delay (of which there have been few) has been countered by the tasks that have been completed ahead of schedule. Project Oversight committee member and Board President Andy Backus says that

Phase I, shoring up the foundation, is now complete. It was finished ahead of time and under budget thanks to the talent and commitment of Myles Donnelly and Brett Bennett of Franklin Corporation, and Jim LeBlonde of

Dirtworks, the excavation contractor. They were able to pour the footing and foundation walls, utilizing a method they had previously tried that no one at BTG had ever seen, saving the expense of lifting the entire building. Phase II, the new entry addition with the elevator, is just about complete. Installation of the elevator is scheduled for early December, and fingers crossed, will be fully functioning by the closing weekend of White Christmas. Members of the board, the Campaign Committee and Project Oversight Committee unanimously agree that the “ghosts” of BTG keep them going. Long time BTG actors and volunteers Dorothy Wachter and Irene Kasson both passed away in 2013, and had not been able to Entertainment News Northwest ~ November 2016

ascend the stairs to see shows at BTG for years before that. Retired WWU professor and BTG director and actor Dennis Catrell made it up the stairs with great effort to see Act I of last season’s August: Osage County. He went downstairs during the first intermission, but quickly realized he didn’t have the strength or stamina to make it back up to the theatre for the rest of the show. He passed away a few days later, which still brings Board member Dee Dee O’Connor to tears. “I was so upset we didn’t finish the elevator project before he passed away.” Campaign Committee member and former Board President John Purdie’s grandmother was unable to see her great-granddaughters perform in BTG’s The Fantasticks years ago. All agree, even though many have passed away before the elevator was available for them to use, their spirits and dedication to the organization through their love for theatre will be felt for generations to come. About 20 minutes later, they experienced a severe jolt and loud “whumph.” Had they not left, they would have been blown out of the sky by the largest volcanic explosion in the contiguous US since 1915! Renovations and celebrations continue at the Pickett House, Bellingham’s oldest building on its original site. This year the landmark house-turned-museum will be hosting a holiday concert and sing-along fundraiser on December 4. Joan Longstreth is scheduled to play seasonal favorites from 1-2:30pm in the front room of the house with refreshments to follow. The house organ is an antique donated by former State Poet Laureate Ella Higginson. Organizers are asking for a $20 donation from attendees, and the space accommodates about twenty guests. Captain George E. Pickett of the 9th Infantry came to Bellingham in 1856 and housed his family at the lot that is now 910 Bancroft St. Pickett resigned his post and left the area in 1861 to join the Confederate cause as a General in the U.S Civil War. Several of the exhibits in the Pickett House are relics of pre-civil war military and frontier life. In 1889 the house was occupied by the Strother family, including Hattie Strother, a seamstress who is featured in the museum exhibits. Ms. Strother deeded the house in 1936 to The Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington and the Washington State Historical Society. Since that time, renovations have been done in the kitchen, back porch, and a bedroom that is a memorial to Hattie Strother’s work as a seamstress. The Daughters of the Pioneers hold meetings in the Pickett House and organize tours and upkeep. Recently, another group of historical enthusiasts has contributed to maintenance and renovations. Marine invertebrates make up more than ninety-eight percent of the known animal species in the ocean, yet they remain elusive to most of us. This fall, the Whatcom Museum presents a photography exhibition that offers a rare glimpse into their mysterious world, Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates by Susan Middleton. The result of several years of fieldwork across the Pacific Ocean, this exhibition shows rarely or never-before-seen ocean dwellers. Many of the creatures inhabit Northwest waters and were photographed at Friday Harbor Marine Lab on San Juan Island. Scottish Highland and Irish Step Dance Classes – Clan Heather Dancers

start new students this month in their Scottish Highland and Irish step dance program. Class registration is underway for pre-school age to adults for ongoing classes and the school’s four-week introductory program in three studio locations: Bellingham, Mount Vernon and Everett. A strong competitive Highland dance program is offered and beginning students can participate in upcoming indoor competitions and outdoor Highland Games.
