The Mount Baker Theatre 2014-2015 Main Stage Season by Osa Hale Comedy horror rock musical. You don’t often see those four words together, especially in a description of a beloved, long-running show. But it is this peculiarity, combined with catchy tunes and self-aware silliness, that makes Little Shop of Horrors as entertaining as it is. A tale of a pair of florists, lovelorn Seymour and beautiful Audrey, takes a bizarre and bloody turn when a mysterious plant appears in their midst. The plant, which just happens to feed on human flesh, wreaks havoc and incites a media frenzy. As the drama heightens and the plot hurtles toward a dark and thrilling climax, it’s nearly impossible to hold in your laughs and gasps.

This pseudo-scary, super-silly sci-fi spectacle will be a high point of the upcoming season for the Mount Baker Theatre, along with several other musical and visual delights.

Audience members will especially appreciate how this production makes it impossible not to root for the characters, says Program Manager Alison Terry. “Although it is a spoof about a giant human-eating plant, it is also a story about three-dimensional people with real problems, big emotions, and honest relationships,” Terry explained. “You’ll enjoy taking a fantastic journey with these memorable and iconic characters.” This thrillingly campy production will be coming to the Mount Baker Theatre’s Main Stage at the end of September. Directed by Colorado director Bud Coleman and Bellingham music director Rob Viens, the cast will be a delightful mixture of local and regional talent. Conner Peirson plays Seymour, and Chauncey Trask takes the role of Audrey, bringing a Bellingham flavor to the leads. Seattle puppeteer Ken Michels and voice actor Evan Woltz bring the evil plant to life with some Emerald City flare. Little Shop of Horrors will be performed on Sept. 24, 25, 26, and 27 at 7:30pm. There will also be two matinees, on Sept.

October 5 will bring Branford Marsalis and The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia to the Main Stage, with the Grammy Award-winning saxophonist performing masterpieces by Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel. The event comes with high praise from Brad Burdick, the Theatre’s executive director. “I think I’m most excited to get the season off and running with Branford Marsalis,” Burdick said. “This will no doubt be one of the highest quality and memorable concerts of the season!”

November will bring the first in a series of silent films that were shown when the Theatre first opened in 1927, accompanied by guest organist Dennis James on the Wurlitzer. This series will continue through March. In December, the Theatre will be full of holiday cheer, with seasonal Irish dancing, the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra’s holiday extravaganza, and Northwest Ballet Theater’s stunning production of The Nutcracker. Other Northwest Ballet Theater productions this season include Dracula (October 25) and The Sleeping Beauty (June 6). February brings another performance highly recommended by Burdick, the Canadian Brass Quintet. “They are one of the most established and renowned brass quintets that tour the world today,” Burdick explains. “I always love hearing them perform in our space and their technical execution always leaves me speechless.” Other high-power, international music sensations at the Theatre are Joan Baez (November 13) and Ladysmith Black Mambazo (March 5). Burdick mentioned that audiences are eager to see Mamma Mia (March 30). Musical lovers will be overwhelmed with options; in addition to Little Shop of Horrors, there will be Jekyll & Hyde (January 24), Ain’t Misbehavin’ (March 27), and Menopause The Musical (April 19).

Later in October, Cirque Mechanics will bring a rowdy steam-punk extravaganza on wheels to the stage with Pedal Punk. Inspired by creator Chris Lashua’s history as a daredevil BMX rider, Pedal Punk celebrates the union of the pedal-driven apparatus with the strength of the acrobats, cyclists, equilibrists, and

Something for Everyone at McIntyre Hall by Zoe Bronstein McIntyre Hall has filled its upcoming 2014-2015 season with a diverse variety of theatre, dance, live music, family programs, workshops, master classes, pre-concert conversations, and more. The “McIntyre Hall Presents” Series features local community arts organizations as well as artists from around the world. This eclectic mix of performances involves new and emerging artists, as well as award-winning and internationally recognized artists. Local organizations include the Northwest Ballet Theater, Skagit Symphony, Skagit Opera,

Skagit Valley Chorale, Fidalgo Youth Symphony, Skagit Valley Academy of Dance, the Mount Vernon School District, and Skagit Valley College. Sheng Dong, or as it translates in English, A Moving Sound, has created a new musical art based on melodies and instruments from the Far East.

A Moving Sound, on September 27th, blends musical traditions from Taiwan, China, and other Asian countries, exploring eastern music and the human condition. Before the show there will be a free lecture on Taiwanese culture and Chinese music. October 17th’s performance brings Bassekou Kouyate, a virtuoso ngoni player, and his band Ngoni ba, to the stage. This “musical visionary” from Mali blurs the lines between West African and American roots music.

True Blues with Corey Harris and Alvin Youngblood Hart comes to the Hall on November 1st. Harris, a MacArthur Grant recipient, has made his name in the blues world as a powerful singer and accomplished guitarist. Hart, a “musician’s musician,” has been described as the “cosmic American love child of Howlin’ Wolf and Link Wray.” Both musicians were involved in Martin Scorsese’s “The Blues: A Musical Journey,” which followed Corey on a roots journey to West Africa.

For a unique musical-theatrical concert experience, come see Metales M5. Mexico’s foremost brass quintet is breaking the barriers of brass music genres as they take the Blues to the Opera and Bach to the back roads of Mexico.

Metales M5, Mexico’s leading brass quintet, performs two matinees on February 3rd. For the past ten years, the five members of the band have developed a diverse repertoire with no regard to genre, from Baroque to blues to movie soundtracks to Latin American folk music. There will also be a master class offered. Las Cafeteras, on February 6, seamlessly fuses traditional Afro-Caribbean music with modern rhythms to create a new urban folk sound from the streets of East LA. Referred to as the “Latino Mumford and Sons,” the LA Times found them to be a “uniquely Angeleno mishmash.... hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock ... Live, they’re magnetic.” The four self-proclaimed “eccentric lunatics” known as The Flying Karamazov Brothers come to McIntyre Hall on February 21st. Having been seen around the world, on Broadway, and on television, The Wall Street Journal describes the Karamazov’s amazing ability to “deliver visual and verbal one-liners, all while creatively tossing about anything they can get their hands on.” The Portland-based BodyVox, a dance company formed by Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland in 1997 on commission from the Portland Opera, arrives March 21st. The company features a blend of dance theatre, contemporary dance, and performance art. Hampton says the piece, named Reverie, was named to “(imply) that is one to sweep us up and carry us away.” The spring welcomes in Ten Strings & A Goat Skin on May 29th. The trio, celebrating Irish, Francophone, and Maritime cultures, integrates modern and traditional sounds, hooks both French and English-speaking audiences. Jesse Périard, and brothers Rowen Gallant and Caleb Gallant, all from the North Shore of Prince Edward Island, make up the young band. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival – Bard on the Beach Shakespeare

Olli Hirvonen Comes To Town by Marla Bronstein On Wednesday, September 17, Finnish jazz guitarist Olli Hirvonen’s trio, Red Reiter, will perform at Boundary Bay Brewery as part of the 2014 U.S. tour to celebrate the release of his debut album Detachment. Red Reiter consists of Hirvonen on guitar, Marty Kenney on bass and Nathan Ellman-Bell on drums. Admission to the concert is $15 suggested donation. Hirvonen, born and raised in Finland, began his music studies at the jazz department of Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 2008. He graduated from the Academy in 2011, and was nominated as Artist of the Year of the Finnish Pori International Jazz Festival. Hirvonen relocated to New York, and in 2013 earned his master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music. His music is self described as contemporary classical music, indie-rock and experimental electronic music. Proceeds of the concert will benefit The Suomi Chapter of the Finlandia Foundation. The Finlandia Foundation was formed in 1953 to nurture ties with Finland and promote a sense of Finnish-ness for younger generations in the United States. The Suomi Chapter was founded in 2010 and serves Finns and friends of Finland in Whatcom, Skagit and Island Counties. Annual events include a Juhannus (“midsummer” summer solstice) celebration in June and a Finnish Independence Day celebration in December. The Chapter supports ongoing music programs, and looks forward to celebrating the famous Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius’ 150th Birthday in 2015. Books by the Bay Book Festival by Joanna Nesbit On Sunday, September 21, avid readers can head to the family-friendly and free Books by the Bay Book Festival at the Hotel Bellwether Ballroom, 1-6pm. You may have attended Books and Brews last year, held in the Boundary Bay beer garden. This year’s event is the same book fair (second annual) but bigger and better, featuring authors from the Northwest and beyond in a fun afternoon of events. The book fair is part of a larger writers’ conference, Chanticleer Writers Conference & Awards Banquet, which runs Sept. 19-21, also at Hotel Bellwether. This year’s conference focuses on book marketing, brand building, social media mastery, and how to flourish as an author in this new golden era of publishing with sessions on these topics and more. Interested writers still have time to register for the conference. The all-comers’ book fair will be a lively affair geared for all ages, with local brews, wine, and food available for purchase, and ongoing door prizes every 20 minutes for a chance to win books, gift cards from local restaurants and pubs, T-shirts, and possibly even an E-reader. Visitors, young and old, will have the opportunity to meet and talk with authors, discover new favorites, have books signed, listen to short readings, and attend 20-minute discussion panels in a variety of genres, including Science Fiction/Fantasy, Young Adult, Mystery, Historical Fiction, Western and Civil War Fiction, Nonfiction, Contemporary Fiction, and Women’s/ Romantic Fiction. Writer associations will also be there, including Pacific Northwest Writers Association, Whatcom Writers and Publishers, Skagit Valley Writers League, and Upstart Crows Writers Association. Seattle author Bernadette Pajer is known for her Professor Bradshaw series, entertaining science mysteries set in the early 1900s. Kate Vale writes contemporary women’s fiction primarily set in the Pacific Northwest, and Pamela Beason is known for her eco-mysteries and romances. Eat Your Way (Locally) Through September by Zoe Bronstein Celebrating local foods, farmers, and fishers, Sustainable Connections is bringing back the successful Eat Local Month for its seventh year. “We talk about eating locally year ‘round,” says Sara Southerland, Sustainable Connections’ Food & Farming Manager,” but September is the biggest harvest month.” Whatcom County residents are invited to join Eat Local Month’s cooking classes, a food trek, movies, cruises, a farm tour, and to obtain an Eat Local Passport. Participating groceries and restaurants can offer stamps to customers, qualifying people for prizes. The event kicks off on September 3rd with the Real Food Media Film Series at the Pickford Film Center. Sustainable Connections is also coordinating the annual Whatcom County Farm Tour on Saturday, September 13th, from 10am3pm. The tour is free, self-guided, and family-friendly (but not pet-friendly). On September 20 at noon, more than 800 people are expected to participate as Teams of Chinook (solo), Coho (tandem), CHUM (relay teams), and Company Teams will cover nearly 40 miles when they run, bike, paddle or walk as part of the Vital Choice Bellingham Traverse. The route includes many of the City of Bellingham’s Parks, Greenways System, bike-friendly roads, and open water opportunities for recreation. Participants have ranged from ages 7 to 70 in the past 16 years, said Todd Ellsworth, Executive Director of Recreation Northwest. The Traverse, a program of Recreation Northwest, was born of the idea that people can have fun being in the environment, and with education, help the environment at the same time. This past year, Ellsworth organized a race summit that was free and open to the public. There were 40 information and product tables, and the summit welcomed 600+ people from Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan counties. Ellsworth’s long-term environmental support goals include building a trail in the wetland buffer connecting Fairhaven Park and 18th Street and improving access from the new trail into the forest. This year, to celebrate their involvement, participants will receive the traditional commemorative mug. Farm Tours Highlight Fall by Christopher Key Those of us who live in the big city (Bellingham) tend to forget that our fresh veggies and fruit don’t originate at the supermarket or neighborhood produce stand. Indeed, we live in one of the richest agricultural areas in the world, and the best way to appreciate that is by participating in the Whatcom and Skagit County Farm Tours. On these tours, you can have a hands-on experience learning what it takes to run a farm, from growing crops to feeding animals. It is an opportunity to talk to your farmers and follow your food from the fields to the table. On Saturday, September 6, from 11am-6pm, you can learn more about the importance of river ecosystems and why salmon habitat conservation is essential at the free, family-friendly 3rd Annual Skagit River Salmon Festival, a fun community event held this year at Swinomish Casino and Lodge’s Waterfront Park, 12885 Casino Dr., Anacortes. Created from a diverse partnership of local, state, and federal agencies, as well as businesses, non-profits, and area tribes focused on Skagit River conservation, the

It celebrates the rich cultural history and natural resources of the Skagit River and its watershed, the largest river in the Puget Sound region and critically important to the recovery of threatened salmon in Washington. “The Skagit River provides 30 percent of the fresh water into Puget Sound, and there are 276 different species in the watershed that we want to protect,” says Kevin Tate, Festival Board President. He’s excited about this year’s event in its new setting (previous festivals were held at Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon) with views of Mt. Baker and Padilla Bay as a beautiful backdrop.

The dogs and their owners hail from Washington, Oregon, and Canada and will compete for Big Air, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve. The Kidz Zone, hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Skagit County, will entertain little ones with a clown team’s twisted balloon creations and face painting, arts and crafts, and other activity stations. Kids can also climb inside FIN, the 25-foot chum salmon, for a mural and photos of the Skagit watershed habitat, as well as purchase a ride on a pony from Lang’s Pony Farm.

To further support the Skagit River and recognize the importance of watershed stewardship, conservation, and revitalization, the festival board has designated a portion of the festival proceeds for a scholarship in Native Environmental Sciences at Northwest Indian College. Another portion will support a children’s exhibit under development, The Mighty Skagit – a Wondrous Watershed Exhibit, at the Children’s Museum of Skagit County, slated for the end of 2014. The festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and wouldn’t exist without the generosity of its “spawnsors.” The Swinomish Tribe is not only hosting the event but serves as Festival Organizer, as well as a key sponsor and partner.
