WELCOME

Hi! My name is Enoch Adedeji and I’m a junior in the Undergraduate Architecture program here at University of North Carolina Charlotte. As a student, I’m really interested in thinking speculatively about architecture, reframing architecture history, and locating my own projects at the intersection between architecture and critical theory, or architecture and literature in general. As a consultant, I’m encouraging my peers to find their own passions and niches in architecture education, which I try to show through presenting my own work and thoughts on architecture. I hope my ePortfolio will display my goals and my theoretical leanings, and also how I am developing professionally, both as an architecture student and future practitioner.

PROFILE

Throughout my education in architecture, I have found that speaking and writing works to play a vital role in many facets of my life as a student and future architect. In contrast to other students, writing plays a pivotal role in my design process, as I find that the structure of writing, or rather, the design of an essay, is incredibly similar to the design of a building or space. A similar level of detail, fine-tuning, and iteration is required to make a project successful. In addition, there’s a rather interesting notion in architecture that the architect is a storyteller more than a designer. In this sense, the design of the space should communicate a sense of a story, and the process it takes to create the final work should also have its own narrative. In terms of speaking, I’ve become interested in speaking in different ways when presenting my work, most recently, I’ve been reading stories.

GOALS

1. To communicate ideas of architecture effectively and provocatively, and show my peers how to do the same.

2. To show my peers the broadness that is architecture and encourage them to find their own niches in the discipline.

REFLECTION

I think I’ve been working towards my goals as a Communications Consultant fairly successfully so far. Because of my specific interests in architecture, history and theory, I’ve repetitively vocalized the fact that what I’m showing are my personal interests and definitely not the only aspects of architecture to be interested in. In that sense, the first idea of architecture I’ve been trying to communicate is the fact that there are a multitude of ideas about architecture. The second concerns the nature of communication in our discipline. Because architecture, and specifically architecture school, is incredibly concerned with developing innovative ideas, different modes of communication plays a key role in telling an audience how a project is new and creative. However, this often results in taking routes of communication that are non-academic, which, as many first-year students are just out of high school, can be a difficult idea to communicate initially. I think I’ve begun the process of opening my peers’ minds in this way, as my own work shows attempts to communicate non-academically, although we are in a very academic setting.
