Mecca

Philadelphia Mosque The Philadelphia Mosque is a modern structure that serves as the main place of worship for the Muslim community in uptown Philadelphia. The building design embodies purity and simplicity while asserting its religion heritage. The mosque is situated in a residential neighborhood composed mostly of two story homes and a middle school. The mosque is oriented so as to fit into the city grid while its prayer hall faces eastward toward the Mecca. Its form consists of a series of proportional rectangles composed of pre-cast and cast-in-place concrete, glass and aluminum, and water elements and fountains that represent purity.

Summer Lake House The lake House design concept was based on the client’s passion; sail boats. This project was located on the shore of a small island on Lake Travis near Austin, Texas. The intent of the design was to create a self sustaining LEED building that would serve primarily as a summer getaway. Natural cooling became a design strategy for this two day charrette project. The sail portion of the house facilitates to capture the prevailing winds summer in the summer and block them in the winter. The sail also acts as a shade device for the intense summer sun reducing cooling requirements.

Trumpet Tower The goal of this project was to capture a moment in the lives of the inhabitants of New Orleans by creating a tower that would bring back honor their rich heritage. Dizzi Gillespie was one of New Orleans greatest jazz artists and his music reflects the lives cities’ unique and diverse culture. Concept for this tower was based upon Gillespie’s famous trumpet, the main structure becoming the trumpet and through which visitors (the music) flows.

Hope, Love, Faith Church This church is located on University drive in Downtown Prairie View Texas; the existing portion of this building, which is the center of the structure, was initially built in the 1900’s. Since the congregation grew substantially though out the years, there was a need for an addition to the main structure. The intent of this one-week project was to add both a gathering area and outdoor area. The Hope, Love and Faith Church was designed using the three aspects of the priest’s beliefs, conceptually dividing the building into three areas. The existing construction was designated hope which represented the believers trust in God. A semi-circular area which would serve as the outdoor space would symbolize the love that they have to each other. And a translucent gathering place that would reveal the sky would symbolize the faith in things to come. All three aspects combine to emphasize the unity of the church and its worship to God.

Multi-Use Housing, Retail and Park We were assigned to design a proposed zoning plan for the city of Prairie View in combination with Prairie View A&M. These plans consist of three main areas a park, retail area and student housing. The Alta Vista development project is a sustainable walking community where the mix use, housing and Retail, wraps around the park area. The term Alta Vista comes from the first African American school in the state of Texas , that in future years was forgotten and changed to Prairie View A&M University . In tribute this event I proposed to honor history by creating a monument that would connect Prairie Views past and present. This monument would become a physical time machine that would make us go back and remember these important events in the history of the city. The Alta Vista monument would be placed in the middle of the park and would incorporate the mix use, housing and retail by two axial relations between the main areas of the site.

Family Town Homes

Family is one of the most important aspects of human life. Houses should be designed not only to act as a shelter or but to improve the unity of the family. This philosophy was implemented in this urban development, by creating and highlighting spaces that would naturally bring the family together. Also this concept was carried out in a larger scale involving the entire community in spaces that can be used as social gathering or recreational areas. The program called for each unit to include a master suite, a guest suite, two baths and two–car garage, a kitchen, a living room, a study, and a utility room. The design endeavored to communicate the areas’ historical flavor though material choices of four feet segments of cast-in-place concrete, metal and wood. The design also afforded some spaces with natural light and high ceilings.

The Sofitel Hotel is located in between the Historical and the Arts District in downtown Houston. One of the aims of this hotel design is to create a connection between the historic Market Square Park and the well known Buffalo Bayou whereby attracting tourism. The building is organized into two principal forms; a small podium and a tower. The Tower features hotel rooms, a lobby, and restaurants on the north side and a garage and conference center on the south side. Rising above the north portion is the tower, which offers a spectacular view of downtown’s skyline from the south side, and a great sense of movement on the north because of its long balconies. The tower is topped with a series of extended horizontal planes that enhance to sense of movement and levitation.
