freshtalk Congratulations to David Ragg and David Denyer of Lansdowne Florist, Bournemouth and David Ragg Flowers, Wimbourne who designed the Gold Medal winning Interflora exhibit at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The theme of the exhibit was ‘Progression,’ and with the sponsored OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam Spheres they produced a pioneering design full of vibrancy and innovation.
Trained mainly by her mother the well-known florist Gail Atkinson, Helen was a quick learner gaining her ICSF and NDSF qualifications before the age of twenty-five. No stranger to competition work Helen was Teleflorist Designer of the Year in 2007 and went on to compete in the Teleflor World Cup. Helen, a Chelsea Flower Show silver medalist, is also a valued Ambassador for OASIS® Floral Products where her innovative yet commercial designs make her an inspiring demonstrator and style consultant.

Helen’s shop in Whickham is a contemporary beacon, with a colour scheme of sizzling cerise pink and black. Helen always has an unusual floral sculpture or installation in her shop window to draw the crowds plus a wellstocked flower and plant display outside. work is constantly evolving, my signature designs are simple and natural with emphasis on form and colour. I have to strike a balance between high design and the needs of my customers to ensure the business is focused on sales and profit.” Anette Østergaard is one of the most respected designers in Denmark with twenty years of experience in floral design. After an apprenticeship in floristry Anette started her own shop, but here she missed the creativity that freelance work could give her, so eventually she gave up the shop to concentrate on specific aspects of design and developing her own in built style as an artist with flowers. Her freelance company specializes in unique designs for individual customers and her style is simple yet strong. Anette’s first love is fashion and from an early age she wanted to be a dress designer, however her love of nature steered her to a career with flowers. A free spirit Anette’s mission is to be an ambassador for the botanical world, elevating flowers and plants to art status. With showrooms in Herning, Denmark and Rome, Italy Anette leads a cosmopolitan life and whenever it’s possible she studies art and design in other fields as she is convinced that to be a good floral designer one has to have a broader outlook, taking in other art forms and thinking outside the box. Anette’s design company www.aplusa.dk offers a range of creative solutions from styling for trend shows and photographers to offering business clients exclusive floral constructions and helping customers to celebrate by expressing their emotions through flowers. Step 2 Cut the ‘Stallion’ Chrysanthemum stems to approximately 2½cm, insert securely into the floral foam making three densely packed lines of Chrysanthemum in the centre of the ball. Push together the Chrysanthemum heads to form a uniform flat covering. Once the three lines have been completed spray the Chrysanthemum with Deep Blue OASIS® Spray Colour, giving an even coating.. Step 3 Use ‘Feeling Green’ Chrysanthemum to cover one side of the OASIS® Bioline® 3D Rugby Ball and white ‘Stallion’ Chrysanthemum to cover the remaining side. Again make the covering compact to hide the floral foam underneath. Cut the stem ends of the Chrysanthemum diagonally for easy insertion into the floral foam.
Whilst the football design is a perfect funeral tribute for a sports enthusiast, it’s a shame to keep it only for the final whistle. Playing a tactical game and selling the football for birthday celebrations and sporting events will put you in the Premier League. The OASIS® Bioline® 3D Football stands on a sturdy plywood base that gives stability, plus the round shape is made from OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam which means the flowers will be easy to insert securely. Cover the plywood base with moss for a pitch like appearance and use flat-formed flowers such as Chrysanthemums or Carnations to give an even, uniform finish. HOW TO: Step 1 Soak the OASIS® Bioline® 3D Rugby Ball. Tease out the Finland Moss and glue in place with the OASIS® Floral Adhesive Tube. Leave the glue to go tacky before placing the Finland Moss onto the plywood base.

There was a time when Tulips were only available in the spring, but now they have an almost all-year season.
Step 1 Soak the OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Posy Pad and drain excess water from it. Cut the Phormium leaves into pieces approximately 8cm in length. Pin the Phornium sections into place in a varying pattern making sure the slices of leaf overlap and cover the OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Posy Pad. Spray with OASIS® Floralife® Leafshine for a glossy look.

The beauty of this design is that as the Tulips continue to grow they will change shape so an ever-evolving look will be created. Using a versatile 12” OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Posy Pad follow Anette’s step-by-step instructions for a growing design.
Step 2 Build up the Phormium by raising some sections on Steel Pin stilts to give a three-dimensional look. Start to add the Tulips swirling them around the outside of the base and inserting the stems firmly into the floral foam. Bend the long Tulip stems and secure with Steel Pins. If the stems are too turgid leave the Tulips out of water for a while to allow the stems to bend without breaking.

Step 3 Continue to add more Tulips building up the design to develop several layers of interest, and keep entwining the Tulips to create a domed shape. Don’t forget to re-cut the stems with a knife to produce a sharp diagonal cut and push the stem firmly into the floral foam to aid security and longevity.

Every football supporter the world over has a favourite team and with each squad having their own football strip it’s woe betide the florist who gets the colouring wrong. Football shirts are chosen as funeral tributes because of their significance to the deceased and are often requested with a name emblazoned on them or a preferred players identifying number added to the shirt.
