1+1 WOOD APARTMENTS Architect: Habiter Autrement, piazza grande 26, 6600 Locarno Structure consultant: SchnetzerPuskas, Basel. Canobbio, located on a hill north of Lugano in Switzerland, is characterized by steep slopes and surrounding woods. The client requested a pilot project to build modular apartments in wood. The brief was for small apartments that could be easily converted into larger ones if required. Faced with a site on a southeast-facing slope of more than 30 degrees, we decided, to develop a compact project, liberating half of the site for a residential, terraced garden and opening up the important southwest facade to face the new garden and overlook the hilltops around lake Lugano.
Our elongated cube is supported by a circulation core and columns in a 3.4 x 3.4 metre grid, which is shifted back from the southeast and southwest facades in order to keep the main structure weather-protected and also to provide shading. Regardless of the configuration, all units have dual orientation and generous loggias. At the top of the building is a full-floor penthouse with private access and generous southeast and southwest loggias. The access to the community garden is located at the first level, on top of the underground parking with the same footprint as the main building. This is also the level where the amenities for the residents are concentrated. 1+1 Solid and void. Built and nature in balance.

A-HOUSE STOCKHOLM Architect: Habiter Autrement, piazza grande 26, 6600 Locarno Structure consultant: SchnetzerPuskas, Basel. Commitents: Akademiska Hus Status: under construction A-house is a brutalist icon in Stockholm, used as the School of Architecture. The building is located in the very center of Stockholm. It was inaugurated in 1969 and it has been voted the ugliest building in Stockholm numerous times. “A house will use the building as a prototype for creative and innovative environments. A house is developed on behalf of, and in close dialogue with the owner Akademiska Hus, following their vision; ”together with universities and colleges we want to strength-
en Sweden as a knowledge nation.” with the intention to connect academic research to food, fashion and media industries.” A big fire in 2011 devasted the courtyard. After this day, lanterns and the iron roof structure has been removed. The program required new spaces for exhibitions, workshops, conferences, recreation. Basically a flexible free space. A roof. The new roof establish a dialoge with the Engelbrekt Church, works as an archological intervention over the ruins of the fire, it’s something else compared to the brutal language of the existing building. Structure: 290 mm dim iron columns, 200 mm cross laminated wood panels, bracing elements on facade. Materials: iron black painted (columns, windows frame, bracing elements, railings), glass, copper (roof cover), wood.
MAS LA ETHZ. ZURICH WEST SHORELINE The aim of the project is to define the usage and the identity of the pubblic space between Burchiplatz and Rote Fabrik. The site is a flat area of maximum two meters on the lake’s level, placed at the base of the east side Zurich lake’s hill. And even the underwater level doesn’t have a relevant depth as it is in the east shore. This feature allowed a continous alteration of the shoreline for centuries. The pedestrian connections are bloked in several points for the presence of car parks and private properties. The main road runs close to the shoreline and represent a annoing presence on the pubblic space. The project is composed by four main phases. First, shifting the main road behind the blocks line allow a direct relation of the city with the lake. A new front of buildings clarify the shape of Belvoir park and the new lake park. This operation has an important impact on the lake shoreline even in therms of noise and pollution. The buildings have a mixed use functional program. A new settlement represent a chance to give a new centrality to this area. Second, how to set the identity of the public space along the lake? The
city of Zurich has an history related to water canals. These infrastructures were the edges of the old city Zurich. Now could define the edges of the city and the lake park. The space between the canal and the urban settlement become a pubblic front on the water. The lake park can have two shores instead of one. Third, how to use the excavated material? At the moment the shoreline doesn’t have a continous walkway. The new shoreline defines four different areas along a continous route: the Arboretum park, the ex-harbour beach, the private lake’s clubs area, and the Mythenquai beach. The main part of the digging material is used to have a safe pool in front of the beaches with a maximum depth of 1,5 m. Fourth, the harbour is placed in front of the clubs area as an exthension of Belvoir park. It must be a pubblic space that ensure the continuity of the walkway and even a belvedere in the middle of the lake. lake front. The project is a system, a masterplan witch consider even a future exthension of the urban settlement into the lake. The clear lines of the design and a maximum depth of eighty meters of the beaches helps to define a rational urban blocks.
YOUNG ARCHITECTS COMPETITION UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN VENICE Collaborator: eng. Michele Demattè. Poveglia Island and the Venetian lagoon has always been affected by the erosion of his coast caused by the floods. To avoid this phenomenon a new edge along the shoreline at the level +1.60 is required. The intervention must define a clear perimeter, a new shape of Poveglia Island, and at the same time consider to keep the existing bank. And this new edge could be a building that is simultaneously a wall containing a garden and a dike on the sea. All the excavation material is used to cover the river in order to increase the accessibility of the whole area.
The functional program has been split in two parts. The new volume host the classrooms, laboratories and the students accommodations along the wings. Auditorium, pool and fitness area are located at the corners. All the functional program is connected by a covered walkway that is a space sometimes in relation with the park and sometimes in relation with the lagoon. Playgrounds and sports facilities are located in precise spots at the end of a path connected to the sea. The terrace roof allow a different expirence of living the lagoon landscape and the secret garden of Poveglia. Renovated buildings host administration offices, mensa and library. STUDIO COMPARTO REMORINO The municipality of Minusio needed to study the effects of a new train stop close to the lake side and close to the pubblic site called Remorino. The Spatial Strategy shows that the new station is an opportunity to enhance the park on the shore and pedestrian paths comes from the hill. TILO’S TRAIN STOP The new station becomes pivotal for sustainable development of the entire Municipality. The train stop Tilo generates element of pedestrian flows towards Via San Gottardo. Will ease the impact of private traffic of visitors to the shore and at the same time, meaning stop district, connects to the rest of the Ticino about 2000 people who live just a few minutes walk from the bus stop. Opening the base tunnel Monteceneri in 2019, the distance between Minusio and Lugano will be just 20 minutes.
1.
PARK RIVALAGO The space of the Minusio Lakeside promenade is the distinguishing feature of the township. The new stop Tilo and a parking system at the entrance of the bank allows the partial or complete pedestrianization of the area between the railway and the lake. It needs to promote a specific project of Rivalago intended as a park that welcomes activities related to recreation and bathing solving all the possible conflicts with the road cycling. REMORINO The Remorino site now host an outdoor parking and a waste collection center. These features are in contrast with the proximity to the train stop. The preliminary study research theme of identity for the site. The historical presence of a fishing center suggest to accommodate a public function of identity as a fishing museum.

MASO ZANOTELLI WINERY Maso Zanotelli is an ancient farm of undisputed typological and architectural value although it is not protected by legal bonds. Law protect just the vineyard and the stone terraces. The difficulty of transport and transfer the grapes to the country upstream obliges owners to create a working area near the farm. The functional program required was a winery, a bed and breackfast and a little privat flat for the owners. The result is an underground cellar arranged
following the shape of terraces, a semicircular plaza at the ground level, a tower of technology services to solve the accessibility to the old farm, a new roof made of porphyry and new concrete frames for the windows of the farm. The new walls of the winery are in dialog with the sinous lines of the existing terrace walls.

MALGA FOSSE PASSO ROLLE Competition for a mountain refuge in the alps. Collaborator: arch. Elena Fontana We explored the possibilities of a local typology of tabiĂ , an antique storage for grass. Looking to the sorrounding landscape, our aim was to connect the project to the fisical pre-existance farm and give an impressive image of an iconic turistic building developed in hight level to have the sight to the village of San Martino di Castrozza in the valley below. The typology for the tower for the human activities is in clear contrast with the linear typology of the farm to
restore animals during the summer period. And the choice to give the minimum space in plan was to leave the maximum space to the grazing yard for the cows. The underground car park is along the street for the reason above. The functional program is divided into a kitchen in the basement, a restaurant-bar at the groundfloor, six hotel-room and a bellevue at the top wich cuold be part of the bar. Every room could have a 360° sight to the sorrounding landscape and the stair become a panoramical view to the valley.

RESIDENZE PARCO NOCC I worked for executive drawings on this extensive intervention of Michele Arnaboldi architetti in an amazing site with a huge park and old villa ruins. The hill we are talking about above Lugano is called Collina d’Oro in the municipality of Gentilino. The place has a strong relation with the surrounding landscape and the lake’s view. The aim of the client was to replace the old villa with the new one,
and finance the intervention with a real estate investement. In order to conserve the features of unity of park and villa, new volumes of residences are located as follow: - main villa is in front of the lake in relation with the italian garden and the park - the residential blocks are located as a filter between the village and the park.

EXHIBITION TRIENNALE DEL LEGNO Pictures represents a workshop of 3 days, a design for a temporary exhibition in Trento. Every three years in the city takes place an important fair to promote the work concerning wood production and technology, artcrafts and manufacturing, tradition and innovation. With a very reduced budget, the challenge was to confer a unity
considering a very articulate program: objects of different dimensions, panels, pavillions, models and prototypes. A white carpet unify the floor and improve the acoustic comfort. Timber wood walls for panels and white basements for sculptures are placed to avoid the perception of the rigid pillars grid.
FOOD STORE RENOVATION AND EXTENSION This superstore is placed at the entrance of the historic city of Pergine Valsugana in front of Piazza Gavazzi, unfortunately used as a big parking area. The renewment was strictly reccomended to ensure the functions of seles. To extend the surface of the store, clients decided to place trolleys outside, and cellars underground. A new shelter has been designed to protect the entrance and trol-
leys. It cuts the ground level and divide the store from the apartments above. A special attention was dedicate to design the technic on the ceiling as it is completely visible. But the challenge of the project was the building site. We had just one month in November to end up the construction and get the permissions to start activity. With three differents firms working together.

TATE WEREHOUSE ON HIGHSTREET The aim of the project is translate a local typology of storage, the warehouse, into a museum building using a new language and a different exhibition system. So the new building is divided into two main fabric volumes wich are a public tower next to the intersection between Old Kent road and New Kent road, and a courtyard factory where the art works are packed and stored. The public tower is a museum where the works are temporarily
stored before to be packed and where you can find large terraces at the open air. In the highest part there is glass box wich is a cafe-restaurant. The structure of the Tate warehouse is made of a concrete grid of beam and pillars plugged with bricks and glass blocks. The masterplan recreates the public void that caracterized the site during the XIX century, designing a urban park of two hectares.

SMALL AIRPORT LUGANO Magadino’s valley is a landscape dominated by agricuture and industrial buildings, very close to the city of Lugano in Switzerland. The size of the new building should be dimensioned with the size of his infrastructure in order to drive all the activities linked to the actions of fly wich are complexes and also need a complete security of people and specific paths. The concrete vaults in several di-
mension following the functional program of an airport are the only architectural elements of the project and direct the people through the space. The connection of this building to the architectural typologies of this valley and his materials - concrete and wood - give to Lugano a timeless building.
