ENSCHEDE IS UNIQUE Real beauty is found within. This age-old wisdom is definitely true for Enschede. The city survived the rise and fall of the textile industry, no less than three huge city fires, a few dozen bombings in the Second World War and a devastating fireworks disaster on 13 May 2000. Boundless resilience made Enschede into the city it is today: bustling with life. One of the major reasons for its lively character is the student life. Approximately 26.000 students live in Enschede, who are connected to the University of Twente, the applied university, conservatory and art academy. They also give Enschede an international feel. More than 160 nationalities live alongside each other here.

ENSCHEDE IS A SHOPPER’S PARADISE Enschede is a true delight for shopaholics. Looking for the latest fashion items or a Dutch souvenir? You will definitely find it here. Shops in the city centre are open seven days a week. Shop ‘til you drop on H.J. van Heekplein While wandering through the city, you will recognize famous brands, discover trendy hot spots and roam through shopping malls. Well-known brands like Primark, Zara and Mango are scattered around the H.J. van Heekplein. If you travel by car into the city centre, you will find a large car park underneath this modern square. Weekly market Every Tuesday and Saturday a large market adorns the square. Stroll along market stalls full of sweet smelling flowers, food stands with tasty international snacks and all sorts of rainbowcolored clothes. You will also discover stalls with typical Dutch products like Gouda cheese, stroopwafel and haring. Just follow the smells to the H.J. van Heekplein and indulge yourself. Charming boutiques in small streets Centered around the H.J. van Heekplein are several smaller streets. For those of you who simply adore small local boutiques, these streets are a must-visit. Haverstraatpassage and De Heurne are chock-full of charming stores with clothing, design and jewelry. Take a break from your shopping-spree in one of the countless cafes.

Oude Markt The cozy Oude Markt is the heart of the city. Restaurants, cafes, bars and night clubs surround the square with the old church at its center. In summer, the sun-drenched terraces fill up quickly. Winter, on the other hand, is the most wonderful time of the year for a hot drink in the relaxing atmosphere of a cafe. Culinary highlights Enschede offers a series of culinary highlights. You can find a selection of restaurants just outside of the city centre. In the mood for excellent sushi? The restaurant Tao* will meet everyone’s expectation. Vegetarian treats can be found at restaurant Het Paradijs*, which translates as The Paradise. In a unique green setting you will experience the best vegetarian and vegan delights. Also be sure to act like a local and grab an ice cream cone from prizewinning ice cream parlor Van der Poel*. Twentsche Foodhal Love international food? Then head to the Oude Polaroidfabriek for a visit to the Twentsche Foodhal*. Museums Visit Rijksmuseum Twenthe* in Culturepark Roombeek. This museum offers both temporary exhibitions and a vast art collection. Amongst it are jewels by Dutch masters and thrilling modern artworks. The Museumfabriek*, on the other hand, is a lovely place for everyone who is curious at heart. Its temporary exhibitions always have a fascinating theme. Synagogue A sight that cannot be missed in Enschede is the picture-perfect synagogue. It is a real eye catcher. Enjoy a tour around Enschede Take a walk through the beautiful city parks, like Volkspark and Van Heekpark. One of the best ways to see more of the city? By bike you have all the time of the world to enjoy Enschede’s beauties. Rondje Enschede is a 52 kilometer long route which connects the natural areas with the city centre. Some of those nature reserves are Aamsveen, Lonnekerberg and Vliegveld Twenthe. Together, they comprise of heaths, marshes, woodland and vast fields. This tour guarantees to be a gem.
Relax at Het Rutbeek Certainly include Het Rutbeek* in your outdoor activities. This recreation area has woods, a lake with small beaches, a waterskiing center and climbing garden. Visit cultural festivals and get carried away when watching sports events, like the Enschede Marathon. Music lovers will embrace Enschede completely. Each type of music has its own event. For instance, Freshtival invites dance music fans from all over Europe to Het Rutbeek. When you visit Enschede in springtime, the sounds of Music in the Streets accompany you wherever you go. The concerts by small bands and individual musicians are free of charge. Another event with free entry in Enschede is Grolsch Summer Sounds. Every summer, the Oude Markt is transformed into a stage where you can listen to an array of musical styles. Practice your salsa moves, for instance, or go wild while listening to famous rock tunes. When exploring Enschede in autumn, make sure to visit international festivals such as Gogbot and Military Boekelo. Enschede has a special treat for those of you who visit the city in winter. In December, the entire city centre turns into a Winter Wonderland. On the Oude Markt, a big ice skating rink adorns the square. The surrounding streets are illuminated and conceal small stalls with hot chocolate and Christmas treats. ROOMBEEK CULTURE PARK For a dose of culture, art and modern architecture, head to the quarter of Roombeek. This neighborhood was swept away by a fireworks disaster on 13 May 2000. 23 people died, more than 1000 residents were injured and 42,5 hectare city was destroyed. In the past years, the whole of Roombeek was rebuilt beautifully. Now it is a place where people enjoy art and culture in a green environment. Several museums and art galleries found their home in the new Roombeek. Rijksmuseum Twenthe* and Museumfabriek* surprise its visitors with temporary expositions. YOUR JOURNEY INTO ENSCHEDE Public transport is a quick and easy way to travel into Enschede. The city centre disposes of a central train station and a large bus station. Cycle paths are clearly marked. By car When traveling by car, finding a parking spot in the city can be a nuisance. Not in Enschede! Here, you can park at the Park & Ride Zuiderval and catch a bus to the city centre. Present your parking ticket to the bus driver and travel free of charge.
