PROGRAMS USED

DESCRIPTION
With a thriving architecture and design community, Kansas City is in need of a hub to connect the public with the architects and designers. This center will bring to light the great architectural achievements of the area.
CREATE UNITY
The form began with extruding a central atrium to create unity between all spaces.

By sitting back from the property line and being consumed by vegetation, the site acts as an extension of the South Loop Link.

SITE CONTEXT In the heart of downtown, the site is surrounded by prominent cultural centers and the new South Loop Link that will likely draw a large population. The surrounding context is very orthogonal. Given the building is to showcase the achievements of Kansas City’s architecture, the building needed to take a iconic form.

To practically achieve this form, inspiration was taken from Frank Gehry’s Fisher Center at Bard College. Rolled steel H-beams are main supports and perpendicular smaller steel beams were placed between them. Diagonals were added in the square openings to provide lateral support.

Sketching helped conceptualize the connection between the atrium and program. The pushing and pulling of each floor seem to bring the dynamic feel that I desired. The top floor began to completely surround the atrium, indicating that the gallery experience allows anyone to “cross-over” to thinking like an architect.

On site, your eye is immediately drawn toward the Kansas City, MO skyline to the northeast. This draw is telling of the imbalance of cultural centers across state lines. Attention needs to be brought back to the rich history of Kansas and specifically Wyandotte County. Wyandotte County began as Wyandot Indigenous Nation, yet, this story is rarely told.

12pm The site poses many challenges including loud cars on the overpass and trains on the rail lines. However, the site is positioned well to avoid winter winds and the industrial park to the north, while opening to the south to capture direct sunlight and summer breezes. The two access points to the site are to the west, so I noticed the main circulation path to be a west to northeast curve.

ESTABLISH MASS
After the required 24,000 sqft mass was placed along the center of the path, the block was split into two through the center to define the corridor. Edges of each block were pushed and pulled to create a greater sense of movement. Lastly, the far face of the northern building was extended toward the tip of the park to honor the view of KCMO.

CLINTON MARINA REVIVE PROJECT BRIEF
Shade Structure on Dock| 2,4000 sqft Professor Nils Gore | Fall 2022 Group Design-Build Project Lawrence, KS
PROGRAMS USED
SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator
DESCRIPTION
Tucked inside Clinton State Park, the Clinton Marina is a hidden gem with calming views and a sense of family among the slip owners. In an effort to create a inviting gathering space, the marina owners decided to expand the main dock. This new space needed a distinct identity and comfort to entice new groups of locals to visit. As a studio, we struggled with how much to vary from the basic shapes of the rest of the marina and tight budgets. We ultimately decided on a repetitive wave design that contrasts the linearity of the other docks. My main role in the project was organizing presentations to the clients by compiling files for slides and leading the conversations.
