DIRECTOR'S NOTES Bloomsday is the commemoration and celebration of the events that are portrayed in James Joyce's famous and daunting Ulysses, a novel which I began to read years ago. Three times I waded into the stream of consciousness of James Joyce and all three times, like Peary in the arctic, I went further but did not achieve my goal. I have a bit of Celtic blood in me and I am drawn to the tragic comedy that is Ireland. The plays of Beckett, O'Casey, Synge, and Shaw all speak to the innermost part of me—so why couldn't I finish this novel? Then the year I moved to Cincinnati to work at the Playhouse, I bought an unabridged audio book of the great tome. It was read by Donal Donnelly, a darlin' Irish actor I had met and whose work I'd admired. Listening to his recording of Ulysses made it clear to me that Mr. Joyce wrote for the ear and not the eye. Hearing the story was a revelation. The sounds of the words running together, the lilt and the brogue were mesmerizing. All 34 CDs flew by and I can now say I have truly experienced that groundbreaking work of literature. To look inside an ordinary man—Leopold Bloom—on an ordinary day, and learn through his thoughts and actions and the details of the city he loves the essence of his humanity is remarkable. It is an EVERYMAN for the early 20th Century where any day is everyday. What Steven Dietz does in Bloomsday is also remarkable. He weaves a tale of a lost love, a blossoming love, and the literary love of Leopold Bloom and his wife, Molly, all together into a gorgeous, bittersweet Irish tweed of a play. Rough tweed with many colors. Yet, the closer one looks, one sees that the colors are fine and subtle and the roughness of the wool soon seems soft and embracing. Bloomsday is also a dream story that plays with time—shifting forwards and back. The kind of story that we conjure up in those foggy moments before we sleep or before we are truly awake. When we ask ourselves: What if I could change the past? What would I tell my younger self if I had the chance? What would I do differently? And would I have the courage to act? Get comfy and listen to this beautiful play performed by this lovely company.

-Michael Evan Haney

DISCUSSION WITH DIETZ Steven Dietz, playwright of the charming Irish drama Bloomsday, gives insight the creation of the story and the enchantment of Ireland. Q: What inspired you to create Bloomsday? A: While in Dublin in June of 2013, I imagined a man going back not only to a place but to a “time"… to find a young woman who captured his heart 30 years before. Ireland is seductive that way—for writers (and lovers too, I suppose). While in Dublin with my family, I was reading Ulysses and also bumped into a young man who was conducting a Ulysses tour—as per the play. I did not take the tour myself. While flying home, I wrote the first scene of the play in my notebook. Q: Which character from Bloomsday do you relate to the most? A: I have to respectfully pass (or at least cheat) on your question: something of all of them is inside of me, but that does not mean I know them. I don’t—not at all. It only means that something about them is a mystery to me. As I write toward that mystery, a character (hopefully) emerges. Q: What is one of your favorite things about Dublin? A: I don’t care how trite or familiar this sounds: In Dublin, there are sentences in the air. Language—the music of language—the poetry of language—the ache and wonder and grit and guile and pure joy of language is like an insidious fog that enraptures you (I am not talking about accents. I am talking about stories, poems, descriptions, salutations). Tiny country, and how many Nobels in Literature? It’s in the air. Q: What do you hope audiences take away from Bloomsday? A: Oh I’d never presume to wish for a “takeaway.” I am ever so grateful to whomever comes and encounters this story, but, frankly, it’s none of my business or concern what they leave with. If it was, I would try to write toward an external effect. I’m not good at that (nor do I really believe it can be done). I can write toward my own internal intention, that is all. My intention is to tell an authentic story with some humor and ache, love and loss—to tell it as best I can and serve it in a theatrical container of some kind—and then hand it over, say goodbye to it. Once the play begins, it is not mine —it is theirs. Q: Describe Bloomsday in 5 words or less: A: Today is all your Days. 18 •
