DIRECTOR'S NOTES We never see Luna Gale and yet she is the center of this play. The title of this play and the name of the child Luna Gale is a wonderful choice, I believe, by playwright Rebecca Gilman. It brings to my mind a magnificent dark night with a full moon shining brightly and yet a storm of enormous proportion about to strike and wipe it from the sky. Peace on the verge of destruction. In any child’s life there are many elements. This play delves into the life of one child and the circumstances that will impact her destiny. We also meet another child of “the system” with Lourdes and get an inside view into the people who work these cases and who care for these children. Names not numbers, families not just files with facts, an overwhelming issue in our nation and as a nation we must be responsible for those who cannot take care of themselves. Gilman has a way of presenting the norm and then tearing it away layer by layer the way a mystery unfolds. Each of the characters we meet in this play appear to be people who you would be in line with at any grocery store on any given day. The kid working at the drive through restaurant, the nurse at the doctor’s office, the guy driving an old truck in front of you on I-71. There are no villains here and no heroes, just people who make decisions as best they can. When I first read the play I stepped back from it, it unsettled me, and then I quickly realized that I could not stop thinking about it. Unsettled is a good thing; it became clear to me that it needed to be in our season. It is a deliberate choice to start our thirtieth anniversary season with this play. It embodies our mission of presenting plays that have a social conscience. It addresses our community in this moment. Over 400,000 children on any given day are in foster care. There were 70,000 deaths from drug overdoses and drug related deaths last year and this year threatens to show an increase. Centers for treatment and drug rehabilitation are over crowded, under funded, and the need grows daily. These are not just numbers, these are lives. Luna Gale is one life, one story, and our future.

-D. Lynn Meyers, Director
