DIRECTOR'S NOTES I hear voices. When I read a play for the first time, I hear voices—the voices of actors I know. Sometimes these voices come through loud and clear, and such was the case with Ripcord. Dale Hodges first mentioned the play to me and from page one, I certainly heard her voice. Then along came the character of Marilyn and the voice that rose off the page was Pamela Myers. Imagine my absolute joy when both said yes to doing this production! Then add in the fun of the other voices. What would Scotty sound like? (Yes, the way an actor sounds is more important to me than their physical appearance.) Ryan Wesely Gilreath has a distinctive vocal quality, and when you mix that with Dale and Pam, he sounded right to me. Lisa DeRoberts, Justin McCombs, and Carter Bratton simply bring the right mix of energy and sound, particularly because they play multiple roles. These actors have the flexibility and facile skills to do just that. You will hear directors say casting is 50% of a successful project. I would say it’s even more. Perhaps my passion for casting causes me to push its importance to the forefront, but honestly, if you have the right people in the room and a great script, including the wonderful set design that Brian c. Mehring consistently gives me, the rest of a director’s job is simply guidance, making sure the playwright’s message is conveyed. I am not trivializing my presence in the room or any “director’s vision.” I am simply saying that many components contribute to the life of a production, and I am delighted with every converging aspect of Ripcord. The playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire, gave unique voices to these characters in order to bring a story to life, a story about living fully. The key message may be a bit obscured by the roar of an airplane engine, but the skydiving instructions given to Abby in Ripcord sum it up nicely: “It’s just like life! You get shoved out into nothingness. Then it’s a long terrifying free fall to certain death! Which is why you gotta pull the ripcord baby! Slow yourself down and look around while you can!” Through the rehearsal process, we did just that. We slowed down, enjoyed the time together, and savored creating this production for you. I hope you take the time in this new year to slow down and enjoy it, too. Thanks for sharing these couple hours of it with us. —D. Lynn Meyers

Mrs. Binder’s Best Cobbler

The ladies in Ripcord enjoy imagining that their less-than-satisfying shepherd’s pie from the Bristol Senior Living Facility cafeteria is actually Abby’s mother’s homemade peach cobbler. With the following recipe, you won’t need to imagine a warm, delicious cobbler—you can make one yourself! Cobbler Filling 4 cups peeled and sliced fresh peaches

(tip: blanch peaches in boiling water for 30 seconds to easily remove the skin)

¾ cup brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla 1 tbsp flour Cobbler Crust 1 cup flour 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda 3 tbsp brown sugar 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces ² /³ cup buttermilk

Topping 1 tbsp brown sugar Whipped cream (optional) Ice cream (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. 2. Butter a 1 ½-quart shallow baking dish to prevent stickiness. Place sliced peaches in the dish and sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and flour. Mix gently, then spread evenly again. Bake for 10 minutes. 3. While the cobbler filling is baking, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and brown sugar in a bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter (or your fingers) to create a crumb-like texture in the mixture. Add buttermilk. Stir all ingredients to form a soft dough. 4. Remove the cobbler filling from the oven and drop rounded spoonfuls of dough on top. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of brown sugar, and return the dish to the oven. Bake for about 20 minutes or until the filling is bubbly and the dough is golden brown. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream (or both)! Serves 6-8. Courtesy of The Food Network

ETC ESSENTIALS ETC Essentials is a conversation series with local scholars and community members that explores the themes and context of our productions before the third Sunday matinee performance. This FREE program begins at 1:00 pm before the 2:00 pm matinee.

DARK COMEDY  |  FEBRUARY 10, 2019 With a wicked sense of humor, Ripcord is a deeply satisfying and vastly entertaining story of two utterly mismatched women thrown together by circumstance. Join Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers as she talks about dark comedy and how morbid humor is often an element of satire. MARRIAGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY  |  MARCH 24, 2019 Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll's House scandalized audiences with its 1879 debut when, in its final scene, protagonist Nora shockingly decides to leave her husband and children. Some claim it's an argument against marriage. If that is the case, then A Doll's House, Part 2 could be an argument for it. Join a panel of local marriage counselors for a discussion about marriage in 21st-century society. AUTO INDUSTRY 101  |  MAY 5, 2019 Dominique Morisseau's Skeleton Crew is her third play about Detroit, the epicenter of American motor manufacturing and her hometown. The tristate region, too, has felt the effect of production plants opening and closing. Join employees from local Ford, Honda, and Toyota plants as they share their perspectives on the state of the automotive industry. T-E-A-M: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORTS  |  JUNE 23, 2019 What does it take to create a team? What does it take to stay mentally and physically prepared for the game? The Wolves depicts a girls indoor soccer team, but how realistic is its portrayal? Educators from Xavier University’s Sports Management Program and University of Cincinnati’s Sports Psychology department will discuss what makes a team and what makes an athlete.
