DIRECTOR'S NOTES When Lynn suggested this play for me to direct, the thing that immediately leapt off the page is that although it takes place very specifically in 1972, sadly, 45 years later things haven’t changed all that much. That realization hit me like a ton of bricks. Yes, we are trying and yes, we have made progress. However, here it is 2017 and the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution—approved by Congress in 1972—was never fully ratified by the states and, therefore, has never been adopted. As recently as two years ago, Congress soundly defeated the Paycheck Fairness Act, which sought to devise remedies for, enforcement of, and exceptions to prohibitions against sex discrimination in the payment of wages. As I started my research, I found A LOT of statistics and incidents that continue to blow my mind: • Every 9 seconds in the U.S., a woman is assaulted or beaten.1 • The number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2012 was 6,488. The number of American women who were murdered by current or ex-male partners during that time was 11,766.2 That’s nearly double the amount of casualties lost during war. It seems like every day there are incidents confronting us: • A sports hero caught on camera punching his significant other into unconsciousness in an elevator. • The recent, national attention surrounding the topic of sexual assault and consent. These stats and episodes go on and on, but you get the picture. It’s not pretty and not much to be proud of. Tonight, however, we hope to provide you with a look at a group of humans, mostly women, who are living these statistics as we still are today. Occasionally, in the face of all these incidents and statistics, there is some light. Sometimes, the stats are proven wrong. Sometimes, love wins. Sometimes, equality triumphs. Sometimes, we find our soul mate in the strangest of places. Now, more than ever, let us pray that trend continues. Speak up, be kind, be compassionate, enjoy. -Drew Fracher 1 2
