Since November 2018, Ensemble Transience launched the project “Composition and Improvisation” to foster an atmosphere of jazz music appreciation and has obtained fruitful results. This year, the Ensemble is proud to present “Stroke of the Slightest Moment”- Jazz Chamber Music Performance Online Series as the grand finale. As the idea of grand finale suggests, “Stroke of the Slightest Moment” sets out to be the tour de force of the ensemble and to leave a long-lasting impression for the audience. We are extremely honoured to be able to invite Ted Lo and Billy Childs, two of the most prominent figures of the jazz world, to share with us their world of music. The actual ‘godfather’ of the local jazz scene if not the music scene at large, Ted Lo is a household name for many of the Hong Kong people outside of the jazz circle. In this series, Lo enlightens us by giving us a jazz tutorial on the development of jazz improvisation. The ensemble is especially thrilled to have the legendary jazz pianist and composer Billy Childs to share with us his music. One of the most diversely prolific and acclaimed artists today. Childs’s original compositions and arrangements have garnered him the 2013 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship, 16 Grammy nominations and five Grammy awards. He has been also the President of Chamber Music America’s board of directors since 2016. Childs will join Ensemble Transience Music Director Teriver CHEUNG, and accompanied by sensational rhythm section featuring drummer Mark Ferber and bassist Sam Minaie from New York, as well as outstanding Hong Kong chamber musicians: a string quartet with saxophone, flute and harp; to present two songs from the master’s repertoire to recreate the intimate dialogue between jazz music and classical music. An attempt to challenge existing boundaries between musical genres, Stroke at the Slightest Moment seeks to present a musical feast of seamless inter-categorical miscibility, leading the audience to experience eternity in that slightest moment between the notes, serving as the perfect ending for the Composition and Improvisation project.
Billy Childs is a jazz chamber music composer and pianist who has influenced me the most. In his poetic compositions, he showcases a unique way of featuring string quartets, flute and harps, accompanied by virtuosic interpretation by the brass section and the jazz band. Mr Childs is one of the very few musicians of our times who has succeeded in both classical and jazz music. His extensive inventory of skills and his profound prowess enable his works to encompass different genres and mesmerize the audience. It has been a dream of mine to be able to invite such a legendary master to collaborate with Ensemble Transience. As the pandemic continues, the performance will now be conducted in the form of video recording, overcoming geographical restraints and technical difficulties. We will play two songs from Mr Childs’s repertoire.

After struggling for almost three years, “Ensemble Transience: Composition & Improvisation” has finally reached its grand finale. The memory of early 2018 is still vivid in my mind, as I was wrestling with time at the backstage of Hong Kong Cultural Centre Studio Theatre with a move-in on one hand, while fighting with the deadline of the funding proposal on the other, followed by funding confirmation, project preparation and planning, branding and positioning of the programme, all sorts of coordination work, moving in and out, finishing one programme after another. Given the turbulent nature of my work, it is hard for me to conclude what I have experienced in just a few precise words, and sometimes felt like I was alienated, asking myself “what is the point of choosing to work in the arts field anyway?” whenever a low point hits. However, every single time when a show ends, wherever I stood: inside the control room, at the backstage, side stage or front stage, I always tear up a little, probably because I have found an answer—this job cultivated my executive ability and made me who I am, and this sense of fulfilment is the biggest reward and encouragement to keep me going. Seeing a three-year period as a cycle, music programme production has been the major part of it. As its end approaches, I want to take the chance to extend my great appreciation for the effort, help and support that the collaborators and musicians has offered to this project, creating many fond memories together. Looking forward to the coming cycle, I hope to bring what I have learnt here and return to creation. I believe that in “the worst of times”, art and culture is especially precious, as it teaches us to be brave enough to trust while prudent enough to doubt, to yearn for light and to fathom darkness. May we never forget why we started, no matter where we ended up. Down-to-earth and straightforward as I am, I have no wild wishes for a warm embrace from anyone, I just hope there are no grudges to be held. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to my working partner – Teriver Cheung, the project could not be happened without his input and his music talent. I wish him every success in his future endeavours.

Kiwi Chan graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Master of Arts in Inter-cultural Studies in 2013, and is now an independent project producer and creator mainly focusing on experimental theatre, Butoh-inspired works and small and mid-scale concerts. She established KIWI & ZENZERO STUDIO in 2018 and rebranded it into Star & Dust Studio in 2020, with a commitment to arts project curation and production. Star & Dust is inspired by a beautiful saying of “we all are made of stardust”, the remnants of stars and massive explosions in galaxies, representing the multitude of potential and rhythms that we humans possess. To echo the idea, Star & Dust is a hub of multi-disciplinary arts practitioners who share the same vision to make the world a better place through art and creativity. The creation of a masterpiece not only requires pioneering ideas but also collective effort. A generation who understands the value of art and culture as the key to a radiant future, we seek to liberate the minds of the masses through artistic creations, hoping to make dreams a reality. Aesthetics matter for all people. Art does not provide one with an answer but an experience, a context, a place to think, to spur thinking, and encourage engagement, acceptance and action.

樂曲介紹 Programme Notes Quiescence by Billy Childs 《靜止》比利. Quiescence was first commissioned by Steve Houghton in 1992—it was a chamber situation that was supposed to accompany a dance troupe for a concert at the Grenoble Jazz Festival. This was the third commission I composed for Steve (he was actually the very first person to ever commission me professionally) - the previous two were percussion concertos, both for orchestra and concert band, respectively. I have always been deeply into movies, and I especially love the French New Wave movies of the late fifties and early to mid-sixties. Quiescence is my version of what a scene in a, perhaps François Truffaut or Jean Luc Goddard film, would look and sound like.
The Path Among the Trees by Billy Childs 《林中小徑》比利. In 2007 I did a tour in upstate New York, touring with the American Brass Quintet. As we were driving up I-95 to a concert in Houghton, NY, the overwhelming beauty of the scene outside of the car immediately struck me. It was autumn, just around the time the trees change colors, and I saw the most beautiful and stunning rainbow of green, orange, gold, yellow, and red leaves. The wind was rushing by and the leaves were blowing in all sorts of directions. I saw little pathways, old fences, green fields, and brown tree-trunks – all juxtaposed against the blue sky with billowing clouds in it. Being from Los Angeles and living year-round with the sameness of the constant sunshine, this autumnal seasonal change was entirely inspiring to me and I knew I had the muse for Jazz/Chamber Music, Volume 2. The first melody – or actually, pattern – that I thought of was the opening piano figure in The Path Among The Trees. We were driving alongside this magnificent forest of brilliant colors when my eye caught this little pathway that disappeared into the trees. I thought, “What would a journey be like, to travel down this mysterious pathway that leads to who knows where?” This imaginary pathway excursion is the story that The Path Among The Trees is telling and that was the starting point for what would eventually evolve into Autumn: In Moving Pictures.

Billy CHILDS
Billy CHILDS has emerged as one of the foremost American composers of his era, perhaps the most distinctly American composer since Aaron Copland—and like Copland, he has successfully married the musical products of his heritage with the Western neoclassical traditions of the 20th century in a powerful symbiosis of style, range, and dynamism. Childs has garnered 13 Grammy nominations and four awards: two for Best Instrumental Composition and two for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist. In 2006, Childs was awarded a Chamber Music America Composer’s Grant, and in 2009 he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was also awarded the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in 2013, and most recently, the music award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2015. Childs has released a collection of reimagined Laura Nyro compositions for Sony Masterworks. Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro was produced by Larry Klein and features guest artists, including Wayne Shorter H’99, Esperanza Spalding ‘05, Alison Krauss H'12, Chris Botti, and Jerry Douglas. Several groups have commissioned Childs’s orchestral compositions, including the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, and the American Brass Quintet. As a pianist, Childs has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Sting H'94, Chick Corea H'97, Renée Fleming, and Wynton Marsalis, among many others. https://billychilds.com/bio
