Gurucul: Transforming Cybersecurity with NextGen SIEM and AI With a resolute mission to harness the power of big data, machine learning, and analytics for real-time threat detection, Gurucul has significantly impacted the way organisations protect themselves from security threats. This article delves into the journey of Gurucul, from its inception to its current position as a leader in the cybersecurity industry.

CEO Gurucul
COVER FEATURE Gurucul, founded in 2010, emerged with a mission to address an unmet need in the cybersecurity landscape – how to harness the power of big data, machine learning, and analytics to empower security operations teams in real-time threat detection. The company's vision is centred on helping organisations safeguard their intellectual property, regulated information, and brand reputation from both insider and external threats. Gurucul aims to equip and empower security operations teams with cutting-edge technology and expert guidance, enabling them to operate at their full potential. The Evolution of Gurucul When Gurucul was established more than a decade ago, its founders were determined
to assist organisations in comprehending the risks associated with anomalous behaviour. This vision led to the creation of User and Entity Behaviour Analytics (UEBA), a technology that has since become the gold standard for accurately detecting unknown threats. UEBA proved to be a game-changer for security teams, shifting their focus from reacting to threats to proactively identifying them before damage could occur. Rooted in behaviour and identity analytics, Gurucul recognized the potential to expand its capabilities into the Next-Gen SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) market, essentially combining XDR (Extended Detection and Response), SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response), and UEBA.
Gurucul's Role in Cybersecurity Risk Management Cybersecurity is a paramount concern for organisations worldwide. Gurucul's Next-Gen SIEM platform plays a pivotal role in helping organisations effectively manage and mitigate cybersecurity risks. Unlike legacy SIEMs, Gurucul's purposebuilt platform excels in swiftly ingesting and interpreting data from any source, in any format. Dynamic machine learning is the cornerstone of this platform, continually adapting and learning from incoming data. Beyond data collection and correlation, Gurucul's platform automates various manual tasks and offers a holistic approach to managing threat detection, investigation, and response. “Our cloud-native platform was built to help organisations lower deployment,

COVER FEATURE management, and operational costs while preventing damage to business due to cyber-attacks”, says Saryu K Nayyar. Success Stories and Impact A common reason customers come to Gurucul is to help them with Security Operations Centre (SOC) modernization. Gurucul's solutions have made a significant impact on clients' security posture and risk management strategies. A prime example is Vodafone Idea (Vi), one of India's largest telecom service providers, serving over 250 million customers. “They selected Gurcul because it dramatically minimized false positives and gave their SOC analysts the ability to focus on actual threats instead of wasting time on things that weren’t important”, says Saryu K Nayyar. “They also noted that their analysts could customize our machine learning models with ease, which was important because they needed to adapt them to their unique use cases. This drastically compressed the time needed for investigations”, she adds. Vi embarked on a Security Operations Centre (SOC) modernization project to enhance insights and align with frameworks like Mitre ATT&CK. Gurucul was chosen due to its ability to minimize false positives and enable SOC analysts to focus on genuine threats. Customizable machine learning models streamlined investigations, significantly reducing the time required for analysis.

Staying Ahead of Emerging Threats Gurucul remains ahead of emerging cyber threats by investigating heavily in research and development. "Our internal team is continually researching emerging trends. We also curate a 'crowdsourced' method of gathering intelligence that is used to develop new models and improve analytics. The threat research team collaborates with the community to incorporate user-driven and in-house models. This intelligence is ported into industry standard formats for dissemination into our product. It can also be shared across our community. This collective approach enables Gurucul to stay at the forefront of threat intelligence and enhance our customers' ability to detect and respond to emerging and unknown threats," says Saryu K Nayyar. The Role of AI and Machine Learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) play pivotal roles in Gurucul's cybersecurity solutions. First, machine learning differs from AI in the sense that machines aren’t just expected to be taught how to act intelligently when performing a task; these machines must be able to learn on their own and make decisions without human supervision. Gurucul pioneered the use of machine learning in identifying user and entity behaviours. Gurucul's early adoption of machine learning in identifying user and entity behaviours

has been instrumental. Machine learning algorithms autonomously identify patterns, detect anomalies, and uncover previously unknown structures and relationships, surpassing human and traditional software capabilities. All in all, it can surpass human capability and software engineering capability to make use of volumes of big data. By incorporating Generative AI, Gurucul's platform can rapidly detect security breaches, even in the absence of a known threat model. This combines machine and human efforts for swift incident identification and response. Incident Response and Damage Mitigation Incident response is a critical aspect of cybersecurity, and Gurucul assists organisations by incorporating Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) technology into its Next-Gen SIEM. SOAR complements SIEM by automating and streamlining incident response. It enables security teams to create automated workflows that triage and respond to alerts, reducing investigation and remediation times. Gurucul's integration of SOAR and SIEM empowers organisations to enhance their security posture by responding swiftly to security incidents. Future Direction and Growth The future direction and growth opportunities are clear. The SIEM market, currently valued at $6 billion USD, holds immense

potential as organisations recognise the need for centralised security operations management. Gurucul continues to evolve by incorporating advanced technologies like Generative AI and advanced analytics. By staying at the forefront of cybersecurity, Gurucul aims to address increasingly sophisticated threats. Leadership Principles and Strategies Effective leadership is vital in a competitive industry like cybersecurity. “I think the most important principle we have is our commitment to our customers’ success”, says Saryu K Nayyar. “Gurucul helps in problem solving and making very stressful jobs easier. There is nothing more satisfying than coming up with a solution that solves a
tough problem that would have otherwise gone unaddressed”, she adds. The company's passion for innovation has driven its success, exemplified by its pioneering work in UEBA. Continuous innovation and the willingness to push beyond current limits have set Gurucul apart. Ensuring Alignment and Communication In a dynamic industry like cybersecurity, alignment and communication are crucial. Gurucul ensures alignment through weekly leadership meetings that focus on objectives and key results. Regular employee meetings keep the workforce informed and engaged, ensuring everyone shares the company's vision and mission.
Staying Informed in a Rapidly Evolving Field To stay updated with the latest trends and developments in the cybersecurity industry, Gurucul's CEO is committed to reading extensively, attending industry events, and networking with experts. This knowledge continually informs the company's strategic decisions, helping Gurucul stay ahead of the curve. Gurucul's journey in the cybersecurity industry is marked by innovation, a commitment to customer success, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. With advanced technologies, a collaborative approach to threat intelligence, and a customercentric focus, Gurucul is wellpositioned to lead the way in transforming cybersecurity and addressing the ever-evolving threat landscape.

Building Excellence: Enhancing IT Project Success WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF IT AND THE ROLE OF THE CIO IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS? In the next 5-10 years, transformative trends will redefine IT and the CIO's role. The evolution of technology from a cost centre to a revenue generator will be pivotal. CIOs must navigate this shift, leveraging AI and cloud computing for data-driven decisions and scalability. Cybersecurity and privacy measures will be paramount, and edge computing and IoT technologies will demand innovative strategies. CIOs must fortify organisational resilience and strategic advantage in this evolving landscape to thrive. This shift signifies a fundamental mindset change within IT and across the entire organisation, positioning technology as a value enabler rather than a cost driver.
Our organisation has embraced agile development practices to remain adaptive to shifting market dynamics.

HAS YOUR ORGANISATION ADOPTED AGILE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES OR OTHER INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGIES TO RESPOND MORE FLEXIBLY TO CHANGING MARKET CONDITIONS? IF SO, HOW HAS THIS IMPACTED YOUR IT PROJECTS?
Our organisation has embraced agile development practices to remain adaptive to shifting market dynamics. By adopting agile, we've fostered a more collaborative approach between IT and business units, enabling faster feedback loops and iterative development. This approach has led to quicker deliveries, improved product quality, and an enhanced ability to pivot based on real-time user feedback and changing priorities. The impact on our IT projects includes shorter time-to-market, increased stakeholder satisfaction, and a marked reduction in wasted resources. The culture of continuous improvement and flexibility that agile promotes has been invaluable in driving innovation and resilience.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO BUILD YOUR TEAMS?
To build my teams, I'll prioritise diversity of thought and experience, ensuring a mix of skills that complement each other. I'll invest in
training and mentorship, fostering a culture of continuous learning. Encouraging open communication and collaboration, I'll align everyone with our shared goals while valuing individual growth and contributions.
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT A TIME YOU LEAD A CULTURALLY DIVERSE TEAM?
A few Global projects I spearheaded: OneMail and OneIdentity back in 2022 involved IT teams from Belgium, Singapore, Ivory Coast, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia. Navigating diverse cultural nuances, communication styles, and time zones was challenging. I initiated virtual teambuilding exercises, which cultivated mutual respect and bridged cultural gaps. We implemented collaboration tools tailored to accommodate varied languages and work hours. By capitalising on the unique strengths of each region, we fostered a symbiotic working dynamic. This diversity brought about a wealth of innovative ideas, and our project benefited immensely from the varied perspectives. The experience underscored the richness and potential of global collaboration.

Sustainability is paramount in our organisation. We've pioneered the Solar Power project in Ivory Coast, powering the entire IT office, PD/GM's premises, and meeting areas. This initiative not only reduces our carbon footprint but also exemplifies our dedication to green energy. Following its success, we're exploring extending solar provisions for lighting and, ambitiously, air conditioning. Furthermore, we're soliciting proposals to integrate solar power at a few of our banana packing stations after witnessing the transformative impact of solar implementation. Technology, in tandem with our sustainability vision, is reshaping our environmental strategy and reinforcing our commitment to a greener future.

The relentless pursuit of digital transformation has thrust technology adoption into the spotlight as a pivotal business driver. WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF IT AND THE ROLE OF THE CIO IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?
One of the most important trends is that organisations are more and more enthusiastic about embracing Digital Transformation. Adoption of technology, is one of the key business drivers, leading to the role of a CIO being transformed to that of a strategic business leader or one of the corporate strategists. With every passing day, justifiably a CIO is expected to be focused more on the businesscentric strategic responsibilities and more involved in business operational processes. IN YOUR OPINION HAS THERE BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE AWARENESS OF DIVERSITY AND THE POSITIVE ROLE IT PLAYS IN THE WORKPLACE?
There has been a genuine and visible increase and we all are

Future of IT and Innovative Methodologies in IT In this era of data abundance, the technologies leverage vast amounts of information to unearth valuable insights, enabling organisations to craft fresh business models and revenue streams. WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF IT AND THE ROLE OF THE CIO IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?
As far as the future of IT and the role of the CXO, not just the CIO, is concerned, Gen AI, Machine Learning, and Hyper Automation will be at the forefront in the next several years. From a business perspective, these technologies drive major inroads: (1) new ways of doing business, that is new revenue models, and (2) new ways of doing work, that is doing more with less. With these technologies using tons of data collected, businesses can generate new insights to generate new business models and revenue streams. This is happening now. Organisations that do not employ these technologies are getting left behind. Automation, to a large extent, has always been about efficiencies and doing more with less. Using Gen AI, Machine Learning, and Hyper Automation will provide the bang for the buck. In the Education sector, the nexus of these technologies is hyper-personalised learning experiences.

HAS YOUR ORGANISATION ADOPTED AGILE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES OR OTHER INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGIES TO RESPOND MORE FLEXIBLY TO CHANGING MARKET CONDITIONS? IF SO, HOW HAS THIS IMPACTED YOUR IT PROJECTS?
Agile is the way to go, especially since we’re implementing a lot of SaaS solutions. Complementing SaaS are custom-building plans that will revolve around the core systems and will integrate them. As such, we are starting a DevSecOps practice. In addition to that, we plan to implement RPA/LC/NC technologies for an even more agile deployment of solutions that align with go-tomarket objectives.

ideas. Diversity is not only about race, ethnicity, gender, and religion. It also includes age and experience. I hire new graduates, those with little experience, and those who are shifting careers. Having a full complement of highly experienced and highly skilled team members does not guarantee success. When people learn together through experimentation and by learning from mistakes, as well as through careful planning and execution, the team becomes stronger, more resilient, and highly motivated.
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT A TIME YOU LEAD A CULTURALLY DIVERSE TEAM?
The most challenging experience was one I had several years ago when I took a global lead role in a multinational initiative involving IT and various departments. My challenges back then of having to manage a huge project team, composed of people from various countries, included facilitating virtual meetings with heated arguments and adapting to local cultures during after-office hours dinners and karaoke. Defining 2023: Overcoming Resistance to Change As we step into the future of Information Technology, the landscape is undergoing a seismic shift driven by transformative trends. Artificial Intelligence and automation are revolutionising businesses, while cloud computing continues to reshape IT infrastructure. WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF IT AND THE ROLE OF THE CIO IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?
AI and automation technologies are the new trends that will shape the future. It increasingly impacts businesses, enabling process automation, data analysis, and decision-making like ChatGPT, chatbots, robotics and many AI tools. CIOs will
need to understand the potential of AI, identify relevant use cases, and drive the integration of AI technologies into various business functions like education, finance, traveling, customs, health and many other sectors. Great example of utilising AI and virtual environments for training purposes! The use of AI in training centres to create realistic scenarios in a metaverse virtual environment can offer several benefits for training customer service agents which create Realistic Training Scenarios, Enhanced Engagement and Immersion, Scalability and Cost Efficiency for this solution. The second trend is the adoption of cloud computing that will likely continue to grow, with organisations leveraging public, private, and hybrid cloud solutions. CIOs will be responsible for developing cloud strategies, managing cloud service providers, and ensuring the security and scalability of cloud environments. Cloud computing allows organisations to leverage infrastructure and software resources provided by third-party cloud

CIO PROFILE service providers. This eliminates the need for organisations to invest in and maintain their own physical infrastructure, which can be costly in terms of hardware, software, maintenance, and upgrades. Additionally, cloud services often operate on a pay-as-you-go model, enabling organisations to scale resources as needed and avoid upfront capital expenditures. With cloud computing, many administrative tasks, such as hardware provisioning, software installation, and system maintenance, are managed by the cloud service provider. This reduces the burden on internal IT teams, allowing them to focus on more strategic initiatives rather than routine maintenance tasks. Cloud providers also handle tasks like security updates, backups, and infrastructure monitoring, further reducing administrative efforts. Cloud computing and related technologies enable remote work by providing secure access to applications, data, and collaboration tools from anywhere with an internet connection. This flexibility allows IT professionals to work remotely, reducing the need for physical office spaces and expanding the pool of available talent to organisations. Remote work also offers benefits such as increased productivity, improved work-life balance, and reduced commuting time and costs. The third trend is cybersecurity and data privacy that will remain top priorities. CIOs will need to implement robust cybersecurity measures, develop incident response plans, and ensure
compliance with data protection regulations.
IN YOUR OPINION HAS THERE BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE AWARENESS OF DIVERSITY AND THE POSITIVE ROLE IT PLAYS IN THE WORKPLACE?
CIOs can leverage technology to create inclusive digital environments, ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and minimise bias in AI algorithms and data-driven decision-making processes. CIOs also have the responsibility to mitigate potential negative impacts of technology on diversity, such as algorithmic bias, privacy concerns, and the digital divide.
PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WORK ENVIRONMENT AND WORK CULTURE?
I value an organisational culture that embraces new ideas, experimentation, and out-ofthe-box thinking. This culture empowers IT teams to explore emerging technologies, propose innovative solutions, and drive digital transformation initiatives that can provide a competitive edge. A dream work environment recognises the importance of work-life balance and promotes employee well-being. I appreciate a culture that supports flexible work arrangements, promotes wellness initiatives, and encourages healthy worklife integration. This enables employees to maintain their physical and mental well-being, leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction.
WHAT IS THE MOST ENGAGING OR SATISFYING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB ROLE?
Problem-Solving and Complex Challenges: I like being involved in tackling complex technological challenges and finding solutions to our business problems. I work with cross-functional teams to analyse and address issues related to cybersecurity, data management, infrastructure, and system integration. The process of problem-solving, overcoming challenges, and finding effective solutions can be intellectually stimulating and rewarding for me.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB ROLE?
Implementing technology-driven change within an organisation can be challenging. I often face resistance to change, cultural barriers, and the need to shift mindsets and behaviours. Overcoming resistance, gaining buy-in from stakeholders, and fostering a culture of innovation and digital transformation requires strong leadership, effective communication, and change management skills. Budget constraints and the challenge of effectively allocating resources across various technology initiatives are also another challenge. we need to prioritise investments, balance competing demands, and demonstrate the value and return on investment of technology projects. Strategic prioritisation, effective resource management, and strong business case development skills are essential to address this challenge.

Achievements and Fulfilment: The Engaging Facets of the CIO Role The world of Information Technology is in a constant state of flux, and the role of CIOs is no exception. Over the next 5-10 years, we anticipate significant shifts in the responsibilities and functions of CIOs. WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF IT AND THE ROLE OF THE CIO IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?
Looking at the role of the CIO I expect to see a further entanglement of the roles of CIO and COO in the next few years. As operational processes and services become more digitised, automated and data driven, the role of the CIO becomes more and more that of a COO. Where CIOs used to focus on supporting the business, and making sure that they had the right IT services, they now lead digital transformation programs, guiding the whole organisation to a digital-first, data driven reality. In the next few years, that role will increasingly overlap with that of the COO, who in turn will have to become more digital savvy and tech knowledgeable in order to be able to lead the operations of a digitised organisation. That may result in the COO becoming more of a CIO, or the CIO becoming the COO. It may also mean that the role of the CIO ceases to exist and that current responsibilities end up being distributed between the COO, CTO, IT director and CDO.

DIVERSITY AND THE POSITIVE ROLE IT PLAYS IN THE WORKPLACE?
Yes, quite certainly. Hiring a more diversified workforce is important. Not just for us, but for many organisations in IT and the government sector, diversity and inclusion are centre stage, also given the benefits that a more diverse workforce brings in terms of innovation and productivity. Hiring a more diverse workforce can at times be challenging given for example that relatively few women graduate in tech or IT related fields. We, as CIOs, have a responsibility to show that IT is an awesome and inspiring field of work for everyone, whoever you are. Of course, not only gender diversity is important. The same holds true for promoting and fostering a more culturally diverse workforce.

adapt. We have grown significantly over the past years and will continue to do so in the next few years. These things combined may sometimes cause some growth pains.
HAS YOUR ORGANISATION ADOPTED AGILE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES OR OTHER INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGIES TO RESPOND MORE FLEXIBLY TO CHANGING MARKET CONDITIONS? IF SO, HOW HAS THIS IMPACTED YOUR IT PROJECTS?
Like most IT organisations, our DevOps teams have adopted an Agile way of working. Most teams use Scrum, others Kanban. It has helped us to be much more adaptive, flexible and predictable, but also more in control of expenditures and budgeting. There are some challenges though. A pure Agile way of working also requires Agile governance (planning and control) and Agile budgeting practices. Since we work within a larger government department, we need to comply with governmentwide planning and control and budgeting regulations – which are mostly quite different from Agile budgeting principles. This sets certain limits to the extent to which we can further grow in adopting agile practices.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO BUILD YOUR TEAMS?
The coming months we will need to hire quite a few new people for our different IT teams including our DevOps and infrastructure teams. A considerable part will be permanent positions, others in more temporary roles with temporary (2 year) contracts. Finding temporary hires has turned out to be much easier than filling permanent positions.
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT A TIME YOU LEAD A CULTURALLY DIVERSE TEAM?
Culturally diverse teams are and should be a normal thing, in particular in IT. Having culturally diverse teams has a number of benefits, as they tend to be more innovative and productive. It may require some attention in remote set-ups where teams work from different locations in the world. Team interactions are then limited to specific meetings and video conferencing online. Different cultures and customs may give rise to different sets of expectations, that may or may not be voiced, which can give rise to tensions if these are not met. Key in all this is to communicate more thoroughly and more often than in collocated settings on what you think, expect, and see, and tell often why you do what you do.

Mainstreaming of AI.
One of the reasons we are moving our IT workloads to hyper scaler cloud providers is to lower our environmental footprint. Modern hyper scaler datacentres can provide IT infrastructure services in more energy efficient ways than smaller, older datacentres, in particular when these hyperscalers are being supplied with wind energy from offshore wind parks. One of the challenges for the future is AI. Using it will require quite some processor power and electricity. Striking the right balance here – between energy consumption and AI value creation - is one of the questions that we still need to explore further.

Cloud Migration: From Anticipation to Acceleration and the Role of SaaS and System Integrators The journey to cloud adoption has been a long-anticipated evolution in the tech industry, promising significant advantages such as cost-efficiency, scalability, and agility. For years, discussions centred on the potential of cloud computing and its transformative impact on businesses. We have been talking as an industry about the migration to the cloud for a very long time. Is that time finally here? We all know about “the significant upfront costs of on-premises systems”, the benefits of “the pay-as-you-go model of the public cloud” and the benefit of “scaling resources up or down” so
that companies only pay for what they use. Cloud providers kept rolling out improved versions of resource optimisation tools that provided better

CIO PROFILE and more granular control over cloud assets, while further incentivising the transition from on-prem to the cloud by offering enterprise discounts and slashing costs even further. Yet, until 2020, the muchanticipated transition did not seem to fully pick up pace on a global scale and a personal note, I expected the migration to the cloud to happen much faster. However, it appears that the pandemic has acted as a catalyst and that things are now finally moving at the speed that we expected. Everyone finally seems to be aligned on the fact that the cloud is not just a technology (r)evolution but a fundamental, essential shift in business strategy and in fact, a pre-requisite. Covid seems to have driven home the fact that companies need to go through an economic metamorphosis and organisations can have significant benefits while maximising the usefulness and preparing for the future across people, systems and processes by accelerating their move to the cloud. SaaS: Balancing Efficiency of a single codebase Achieving maximal cloud computing benefits through software as Service (SaaS) deployments come back to the concept of “multi-tenancy”, where cloud users ultimately share a single instance of the software. The advantages of effectively deploying a single codebase are obvious: • Reduction in Development as well as maintenance and

support Costs Streamlined and optimised upgrades Rapid Time to Market and Time to Value Standardised experience Better control of security Simplified innovation processes and interactions Compliance adherence to standards, regulations and legislation Operations are based on a more efficient architecture that allows optimal utilisation of resources as clients grow, without the need for extensive re-investments and re-design
There have been many debates on matters of security related to this approach, as data of different cloud users may be kept on the same physical or virtual server. As such, cloud companies have to deploy the necessary security measures and cloud providers have made significant investments in data encryption, access control, and intrusion detection. Is SaaS the Holy Grail? Key considerations. At first glance, transitioning from on-prem to the public cloud may indeed seem like a Holy Grail. Complex, inefficient single-tenant - or even hybrid single-tenant and multi-tenant architecture environments, are usually plagued by lack of agility, operational overhead, increased complexity, varying and difficultto-control customer experience, and need for specialised and
non-scalable knowledge and processes. All of these are not only eroding efficiency and productivity but can also lead to issues with market position, company perception and ultimately winning business. However, the “devil is always in the details” and there are multiple considerations that CIOs and executive teams need to consider. We must start with the issue of interoperability across multiple clouds. The reality is that any organisation that has a multi-cloud strategy must contend with managing not only multiple complex cloud provider relationships but even more importantly, deal with the fact that there is no “universal standard” across cloud providers. Secondly, CIOs, Procurement and their teams need to check the small print! Everything mentioned before might give the perception that “cloud computing equals optimised costs” but there are multiple items that need to be considered to understand the true cost base: Cloud management costs, security solutions, and API call prices are just some of the items that need to be reviewed. We should also not forget agility! On-premise architectures/ deployments are extremely inflexible, but the reality is that cloud service providers do not fully enable DevOps and CI/CD to the level required for operation of today’s agile enterprises. Moreover, enterprises must contend with the fact that customisations are severely constrained and emerging

CIO PROFILE technologies such as AI are not always seamlessly and rapidly incorporated. Unfortunately, at this point, there is also a limitation on what real-time performance can be achieved. For example, none of the cloud providers have managed to run RANs at the expected performance of onpremise deployments. Lastly and beyond data governance laws, regulations and legislation, there is one more thing that needs to ultimately be considered: Re-architecting applications, going native and planning the landscape accordingly. Without that step, organisations cannot fully benefit from the cloud. Beyond ISVs on the cloud: The importance of System Integrators System Integrators are not just delivery/service partners. They are strategic partners that can help businesses save money, improve efficiency, and gain a competitive advantage by enabling the right cloud provider software and services choice, assisting with the migration of data and applications, and providing the knowledge, tools, and strategies necessary to unlock cloud computing's full potential. Just as ISVs, SIs have had to adapt by developing new skill sets in cloud management, partnerships with cloud providers and developing migration strategies. Modern SI’s ready for the Cloud computing era require as a minimum the following competencies:

1.Optimising and modernising infrastructure 2.Cloud Infrastructure build 3.Migration from On-prem as well as between cloud providers' capabilities 4.Operating Cloud Infrastructure 5.Forming Alliances with SaaS Providers 6.Developing Competencies in SaaS Management 7.Designing Integration and other cloud services Delivering cloud computing benefits requires an ecosystem that contains the full value chain and SI’s are a crucial part of that, by combining expertise and strategic partnerships. With the rapid emergence of multiple and significant “players” in AI and LLMs on a regular basis, Systems Integrators are likely to play a very significant part in guiding organisations through “unchartered and complex AI and LLM territories” to benefit from the transformative power of both elements. SaaS adoption: A journey, not the final frontier! The transition of today’s organisations to the public cloud is not a technology upgrade. It is a strategic necessity to enable efficiencies, flexibility, security, agility and innovation benefits, extending as far as becoming a core part of an employer’s value proposition for today’s workforce. Adopting cloud computing offers truly “global access” in both technology as well as business, serving as essential conduits for organisational transformation. Concluding, there may be

instances where a single-tenant architecture is necessary (e.g., highly customised deployments, the requirement to run in real time such as RANs), and we can all agree that in principle a single, multi-tenant architecture delivers significantly “higher marks “against key business objectives, such as efficiency, agility, control, scalability. However, we are still and will continue to be for the foreseeable future in a hybrid architecture state. Only when interoperability comes, we will be ready to discuss achieving the ultimate objective: the creation of sustainable competitive advantages through the ultimate mix of: - Skilled workforces, operating in scalable organisations; - Organisation that operates with cost-effectiveness, innovation and operational flexibility in mind; - Organisations that function in an agile, scalable environment that removes the silos of data and functionality, thus allowing cross-functional internal and external teams to interact at significant speed and efficiency. The cloud migration journey is not a destination but a continuous evolution that empowers organisations to adapt, thrive, and stay at the forefront of their industries. It is a transformational shift that promises to reshape not only how businesses operate but also how they deliver value to their customers, partners, and employees.
