EDITOR’S LETTER
ENTERPRISE INFRASTRUCTURE FROM ONPREMISE TO THIRD PARTY
Hello Friends.
Dear IT Leaders Life after covid pandemic has come to a grinding halt many people and many industries. You have been put to execute very difficult tasks. I believe time is not same always. Learning in the mantra of life and one has to be ready for all unforeseen circumstances. Today we are seeing the pandemic is receding from all corners of the country but at the same time there is another strain coming up – which is being reported in the media houses and by the health authorities. So, what to do? There is no alternative but be ready with all the automations, digital and securities ready with you so that if there is any demand, you can make your company run seamlessly. Infrastructure building is one of the very big things before attempting any disruptive technologies and applications including automation, digital transformation, and cyber security. Today many of the CIOs have moved into the colocation environment for the simple reason of elasticity and there are many CIOs who have kept their infrastructure on-premise. Of
NEXT MONTH SPECIAL
course, both the models are good, but the trend says that when you go for digital, you need massive scale up and need hyper scale DC capability which is why you may need budget constrain in the On-premise infra whereas the colocation DCs can support your scale. At the same time, rising cost of real-estate and steep overheads for cooling and power compels the CIOs to go for the colocation. This of course can be managed by the On-premise environment but depends on the law of the land / compliance and the budget for the building and operation. The second option is always good, but can every organization afford that if the compliance is in place for having own data center? It means, you are inviting negative growth for yourself as the competition would surpass you. Yes, the challenge is dealing with the perception of monitoring and data privacy in the third party DCs, which is gradually evaporating. The other thing is new technology is catching up including 5G and edge computing. Tomorrow autonomous cars, city surveillance and growth in OTT platforms, these demand growth in edge data centers. It means On- premise DCs cannot support these new environments. Therefore, third party DCs must grow as no customer organization can support the cost for having multiple DCs and managing and monitoring the infrastructure. These days the workers are operating from remote locations and the DCs are following them as they need security, network, VMs and storage. Can we imaging On – premise DCs to support this new environment. In order to demystify the battle between the On Premise and third party DCs, we are organizing DC Summit and Awards 2021. I would request all the CIOs to join and understand deep about the differences and advantages.

protect even the largest environments. With higher port densities and more capacity, the new offerings dramatically disrupt the traditional cost structure as organizations need fewer appliances to secure the same environment,” added Conner. New NSa Firewalls Disrupt Cost Expectations by Tripling Throughput, Expanding Port Densities: The new SonicWall NSa 4700 and NSa 6700 next-generation firewalls deliver 18 and 36 Gbps of firewall throughput — three times the previous comparable SonicWall appliances. Both also support critical TLS 1.3 encryption standards. “When designing large networks, highbandwidth interfaces are a critical component,” said NW Technology owner Ryan Oord. “SonicWall’s new NSa series provides interface options that fit the different needs of varying and sizable networks.”
Tribe, a customizable community platform that enables businesses to create their customer communities has today announced a $7.5m seed funding round. It was led by Bessemer Venture Partners and CRV with participation from Inovia Capital. With Tribe, companies can create online communities to engage customers and followers. This helps to foster engagement and enables them to harness a valuable feedback loop to help enhance their product or service. Moreover, these communities empower customers to derive maximum value from the product, thereby improving customer retention and, ultimately, the revenue. A growing number of SaaS players are turning to Tribe to build customer communities so they can get this pulse on customers, create a tight feedback loop, offer support, and enable knowledge sharing.

service that is bound to delight this otherwise difficult-to-impress user segment. The experience of using a Virtual Pro Workstation is identical to using any physical desktop. Besides, it has high availability, unlimited data transfer and 2-factor authentication for a seamless, hassle-free experience. Commenting on the launch, Yotta Infrastructure’s Co-Founder & CEO, Sunil Gupta says, “We are confident that Virtual Pro Workstations will transform the end-user segment, the same way that cloud computing changed the enterprise computing landscape. With zero CAPEX investments, real-time provisioning, pay as you go models, IT teams tasted blood with cloud computing long back and gradually, enterprise applications migrated away from the physical, onpremise servers to the cloud. The time has now come for high-end personal computer users to move on and realise the true power of cloud – with Virtual Pro Workstation.”
Oracle today announced a new Oracle Support Rewards program to help customers speed migrations to the cloud while reducing their software license support costs. Now, customers making new commitments to buy Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services can earn rewards that reduce or even eliminate their Oracle onpremises technology licensing support bills. With this program, all Oracle technology license support customers will earn at least 25 cents of Support Rewards for each dollar of OCI Universal Credits they purchase and consume. Customers with Oracle Unlimited License Agreements (ULA) will save even more – earning rewards at a 33 percent rate. This means that a ULA customer with an Oracle technology license support bill of $500,000 could eliminate that bill entirely by migrating $1.5M of workloads to OCI. “OCI is Oracle’s fastest growing business because we built a unique Generation 2 cloud infrastructure platform capable of running the most demanding mission-critical workloads faster, more reliably, and more securely than our on-premises systems,” said Oracle Chairman of the Board and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison. “We want to enable more customers to take advantage of our Gen 2 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

McAfee Sees Ransomware-As-A-Service, Cryptocurrency And Internet Of Things Threats Surge In Q1 2021 McAfee Corp. released its McAfee Threats Report: June 2021, examining cybercriminal activity related to malware and the evolution of cyber threats in the first quarter of 2021. The quarter saw cyber adversaries shift from low-return, mass-spread ransomware campaigns toward fewer, customized Ransomware-as-aService (RaaS) campaigns targeting larger, more lucrative organizations. A proliferation in 64-bit CoinMiner applications drove the growth of cryptocurrency-generating coin mining malware by 117%. Additionally, a surge in the growth
of new Mirai-based malware variants drove increases in malware targeting Internet of Things (55%) and Linux (38%) systems. “Criminals will always evolve their techniques to combine whatever tools enable them to best maximize their monetary gains with the minimum of complication and risk,” said Raj Samani, McAfee fellow and chief scientist. “We first saw them use ransomware to extract small payments from millions of individual victims. Today, we see Ransomware as a Service supporting many players in these illicit schemes holding
organizations hostage and extorting massive sums for the criminals.” Each quarter, McAfee assesses the state of the cyber threat landscape based on in-depth research, investigative analysis, and threat data gathered by the McAfee Global Threat Intelligence cloud from over a billion sensors across multiple threat vectors around the world.

According to the data from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-

Rapid proliferation of endpoints, cloud apps, and smartphones with the growth of distributed workspaces and a diminishing enterprise perimeter has exposed organizations to newer threat vectors and risks. Security point products in play fail to consider the aggregated impact of a security alert and often employ a siloed approach to threat remediation. Today’s business world is continuously being disrupted – through evolution of new-age technologies, the global pandemic and the resultant lockdown, the list is endless. In such a scenario, no business model can remain standard, no process can remain constant. Businesses must reimagine their operating model, look for better solutions to their problems and keep on evolving and innovating. Businesses are increasingly integrating new-age technologies in their existing IT infrastructure to make their process seamless and customer targeting effective. This has given rise to a lot of interesting business models such as Insurance Tech, Finance Tech, Education Tech, Marketing Automation, etc. Every function of a business is being reimagined to enhance efficiency and ROI. However, as technology is disrupting existing industries and creating a lot of innovative sectors, the business processes are getting more sophisticated and complex. Now, ‘One solution fits all industries’ kind of strategy is proving to be ineffective and businesses are compelled to look for solutions that are custom made for their respective industries. Technology solutions providers have gazed this opportunity, and started to customized their solutions as per the requirements of different 16 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JUNE 2021
industries. The rise of industry-specific cloud is one such solution. What is industry-specific cloud? Industry clouds are collections of cloud services, tools, and applications optimized for the most important use cases in a specific industry. APIs, common data models and workflows, and other components are available to customize capabilities. Industry cloud solutions from major public cloud providers such as Microsoft, IBM and Oracle offer a variety of software and services, including industry-specific applications. Creating industry-focused, standalone applications using pre-defined business models from an intelligent suite, and a scalable API framework with advanced services allow businesses to innovate quickly and accelerate their transition into an intelligent enterprise. Industry-specific cloud not only provides the partner ecosystem with new monetization opportunities but also empowers domain experts to understand customers’ businesses and challenges better and offer innovative new solutions. Let us look at how different industries are transforming themselves by embracing the
industry-specific cloud solutions: Financial Services – The financial services industry has always been very conservative when it comes to implementing new solutions. However, due to the paradigm shift from physical to digital, now this trend is even more accelerated by the global pandemic. The industry must create digital solutions to stay relevant for their customers. Hence, major cloud services providers are offering customized solutions such as unique templates, API’s, multi-layered security and compliance coverage to deliver differentiated customer experiences, improve employee collaboration and productivity, manage risk and modernize core systems. Using these capabilities, financial services institutions such as banks can create a comprehensive view of their customers with greater insight and detailed plan of action, embed digital collaboration into their process workflows, and enhance insights to help reduce fraud. Retail – As customers’ behavior, taste and preferences constantly keep evolving, the retail industry is expected to innovate at a lightening pace. Since customer data, inventory management, supply chain, and distribution network form intrinsic parts of this industry, they need

A YEAR OF LOCKDOWNS SEES A SURGE IN MOBILE MALWARE TARGETING BANKING, BILLING AND COVID-19 VACCINES McAfee’s Advanced Threats Research team released its Mobile Threat Report 2021, which found hackers are using fake apps, Trojans and fraudulent messages to target consumers. Last year, McAfee revealed that hidden apps were the most active mobile threat facing consumers. But following a year of lockdowns and a surge in time spent online and on devices, fraudsters are capitalising on this with more approaches. With most of the world still anxious about COVID-19 and demand for vaccines high, McAfee’s research sheds light on how hackers are targeting these fears with bogus apps, text messages, and social media invitations. “As people increasingly spend more time online owing to the pandemic and staying connected on their mobile devices, hackers are cashing in to target unsuspecting consumers. With the dramatic increase in threats and cybercriminals exploiting mobile devices, our ongoing effort is to ensure that we protect what is of paramount importance to consumers – their personal data.” said Venkat Krishnapur, vice-president of engineering and managing director, McAfee Enterprise, India. “As fraudsters continue to experiment with newer methods and advanced
techniques to bypass security screening, we aim to assist consumers by guiding them to remain vigilant and raise awareness on the importance of safeguarding their data and personal devices.” Over the past year, the vaccine rollout has advanced at different rates across the globe, providing plenty of opportunities for hackers. McAfee Advanced Threat researchers found that hackers are hiding malware and malicious links inside fakes vaccination appointments and registration display ads. These have the potential to download malware onto a person’s device that displays unwanted ads, as well as activating accessibility features to give the hacker full device control, with the goal of stealing banking details and credentials. According to the research, some of these campaigns worryingly started as early as November last year, before any vaccines had officially been approved, while others continue to appear as countries roll out their vaccination programmes in the fight against COVID-19. “We’ve seen how the pandemic not only led to an increased dependence on mobile devices, but how it has prompted bad actors into developing new ways of tricking consumers and stealing their personal data. As well as these advanced forms
VENKAT KRISHNAPUR, VICE-PRESIDENT OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGING DIRECTOR, MCAFEE ENTERPRISE, INDIA
of malware and deceit, we’ve seen that hackers are also returning to billing scams, but using new tricks,” said Raj Samani, McAfee Fellow and Chief Scientist. “As consumers continue to carry out daily activities on-the-go, it is critical that they stay educated and proactive about protecting their personal data.” The latest McAfee Mobile Threat Report 2021 highlights the following mobile threat trends: n COVID-related malware: According to the McAfee COVID-19 Dashboard, more than 90%of all pandemic-related malware took the form of Trojans. McAfee researchers found evidence of an SMS worm targeting Indian consumers, forming one of the earliest vaccine fraud campaigns. Both SMS and WhatsApp messages encouraged users to download a vaccine app and once downloaded, malware sent itself to everyone in the user’s contact list via SMS or WhatsApp. The malware behind this is the same family that was involved in India’s ban on the Tik-Tok app last July. n Billing fraud malware that makes purchases behind the backs of consumers: McAfee researchers have also uncovered new information on mobile malware dubbed Etinu. Targeting users in Southwest Asia and the Middle East predominately, Etinu was found being distributed via Google Play, with more than 700K downloads before being detected and removed. Once an app harbouring this malware is installed via the Google Play Store, the malware steals incoming SMS messages using a Notification Listener function. It can then make purchases and sign up for premium services and subscriptions that get charged to the user’s account. n Hackers are using banking Trojans to target hundreds of financial institutions around the world: McAfee Mobile Security detected a 141% increase in Banking Trojan activity between Q3 and Q4 2020. Most Banking Trojans are distributed via mechanisms such as phishing SMS messages to avoid Google’s screening process. During its research, McAfee discovered Brazilian Remote Access Tool Android (BRATA) – a popular banking Trojan – that repeatedly managed to get onto the Google Play store and as a result, tricked thousands of users into downloads. 3 TIPS TO APPLY WHILE ADAPTING TO NEW IT NEEDS
BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM
What do we need the most today to keep our businesses relevant and growing? One standard answer to this will be – a location-agnostic IT infrastructure. The need for a location-agnostic, remote-work friendly workspace has resulted from the recent developments after the pandemic. HR and IT departments across organizations had to create a solid but flexible remote-work IT infrastructure overnight. If one thing the pandemic has taught us well is to be prepared for the worst. So whichever work model we choose to go with, it is evident that the nature of work must be more collaborative, increase productivity and ease communication within teams. The good news is, today, we have a plethora of SaaS and PaaS products to choose from, and the number is only multiplying. This also indicates that hybrid cloud and Multicloud IT consumption for enterprises have shot up. However, different organizations have their needs and challenges based on their size and the solutions they provide. Companies thus need to revise their IT requirements and draft measures to enable a remote workforce and embrace cloud solutions while focusing on security and cost management. Here are three tips on supporting the changing IT needs of companies: 1. Implement a modern workplace strategy The modern workplace is all about collaboration between employees. But creating an environment that supports team collaboration need not be any complex. However, all it needs is technology, changing human behavior and establishing a best-practices framework. There are many technologies available which can quickly speed up those processes to create a modern, collaborative 20 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JUNE 2021
workplace. Ensure that the solutions selected are easy to use, cost-effective and work well with the top e-learning tools. 2. Guidance in rapid cloud adoption Any cloud environment, be it public, private, hybrid, or multi-cloud, essentially needs the organization to adapt while not compromising security and cost control quickly. However, this is not easy to achieve. An all-at-once move to the cloud is usually not the best option, but it is best to hire a team that specializes in cloud architecture, who can guide in assessing which workloads to migrate and how to do that according to best practices. Basically, to understand how to start small and plan big. 3. Staying optimized by design In reviewing the IT infrastructure of the enterprise, it is essential to have a critical eye on implementing quality control and securing cost optimization. The best way to do so is to monitor the overall IT estate, have clear insights on such investments, and follow the proper governance to best leverage them. As companies are becoming globally distributed, such optimizations are crucial to success in today’s changing market. It’s also vital that these optimizations are implemented alongside technical support with guaranteed SLAs to minimize any risks. Thus, there must be processes and structures in place to maintain maximum efficiency and utilization. It is beyond any doubt that today and going ahead, all companies and organizations will be using various services with various degrees of governance and oversight. Therefore, presuming Multicloud and hybrid cloud to be our collective reality for the foreseeable future, leading-edge execution and implementation skills will be of the most importance.

SECURITY // FUTURE HOLD
The extraordinary value of digital communications has never been more apparent than during the past year. As COVID-19 swept the planet, businesses and individuals switched almost overnight to remote working, relying more than ever before on digital channels to stay productive, informed, connected, and entertained. For communication service providers (CSPs), responding to the enormous and rapid change in usage patterns was an overriding priority. At the same time, the cyber threat landscape intensified, as malicious actors capitalised on disruption to launch attacks on distributed workplaces. This meant provisioning had to be balanced with 22 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JUNE 2021
maintaining security and resilience. Now, more than a year since the onset of the pandemic, CSPs are analysing the impact of the actions they took to meet surging demand and the broader range of locations they had to serve. They are adapting strategic investment plans to ongoing changes and identifying priorities for focus in the years ahead. At this critical point, A10 Networks has surveyed more than 1200 senior IT professionals, from a range of CSPs worldwide, to discover what lasting effects they are seeing on their subscribers and the enterprises they serve. The results reveal the extent to which “business-as-usual” is a thing of the past for global CSPs.
FUTURE HOLD // SECURITY
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE COMMUNICATION SERVICE PROVIDERS KEEPING THE WORLD CONNECTED DURING COVID-19? Changes in demand: immediate, universal, and here to stay As billions turned to digital tools for news and to stay working productively, 99% of the service providers we surveyed saw a dramatic surge in demand, up by 55% on average. As a result, more than half of them scaled up infrastructure across their network, and 54% did so in specific high-demand locations. Faced with a much more distributed environment and a broader attack surface, 47% invested more heavily in security and 55% say this must be a priority for the future. This is at least partly because the majority of service providers believe there has been a longterm change in how and where their customers expect employees to work. Two-thirds said that their customers will continue to operate with employees working from home post-pandemic. Consequently, relationships with customers have changed – 56% say customers are now demanding more self-serve options such as online portals, while just over half are seeing increasing customer concern about the resilience of their service provider and how it can underpin business continuity. Certainly, awareness of the extent to which businesses and individuals rely on digital networks has grown exponentially in the past year, meaning service providers must focus on delivering highly reliable connectivity and minimising any disruptive downtime. This was reflected in the investment priorities listed among the surveyed
IT professionals: upgrading firewalls and security appliances, and adding DDoS protection and mitigation measures are all firmly in the roadmap for the coming year. Overall, 52% of respondents plan to increase security investments over the next three years. Enterprise customers face growing security challenges and are open to alternative providers as a result CSPs are seeing customers striving to adapt to an escalating threat environment and a distributed network. Our survey respondents reported that many are pursuing better endpoint security, updating BYOD policies, and rolling out multifactor authentication as they aim to mitigate growing cyberthreats. Enterprise customers are also asking more rigorous questions of their service providers, requiring end-to-end security service level agreements in more than half of cases. Traditional CSPs must step up to this challenge and ensure that they can offer the protection and assurance customers need, because there is strong evidence that clients are prepared to look outside the conventional telco supplier list in a bid to enhance security. Three in five IT professionals surveyed said that enterprise customers are splitting workloads and traffic between traditional telcos and non-telco cloud platform suppliers to ensure resiliency. Correspondingly, half said that customers are now expanding their RFP list to
SANJAI GANGADHARAN, REGIONAL DIRECTOR, SAARC, A10 NETWORKS
include non-telco providers – a sign that this is a long-term strategy. These changes to the customer purchasing strategy are significant and will see greater competition, with pressure on traditional telcos to offer more comprehensive services with uptime assurances that match rising customer demand. 5G and multi-cloud environments pose security concerns The pandemic coincided with the rollout of 5G networks and precipitated a rapid shift to the cloud, giving service providers several fronts on which to manage major change. They anticipate a range of security challenges as the 5G shift progresses with the top concern being maintaining a quality service and avoiding outages. One in five IT professionals said that unpredictable usage and changing traffic patterns were a top concern, while a similar number cited the growing threats of DDoS attacks on their now highly distributed network architecture. Avoiding service outages was also a prime concern around managing subscribers across multi-cloud environments, together with compliance issues and ensuring a consistent subscriber experience. It is evident from the concerns and priorities revealed by our research that service providers have customer experience and service resilience firmly at the top of their to-do list as customer expectations, their purchasing strategies and the network environment undergo pandemicaccelerated change. A thread running through many responses was the threat posed by DDoS attacks, with almost half of service providers saying investment in DDoS mitigation across the network infrastructure was a priority and the same number saying it is the top additional capability needed to protect against attacks that threaten network availability. As service providers continue responding to the dramatic and widespread impacts of the pandemic, they will need to defend against nontelco competitors and deliver high availability and security assurance. Maximum uptime and data protection are paramount in the prevailing remote work environment, meaning investment in these areas will pay dividends. With a resurgence in DDoS attacks in the second half of 2020 – more than 12.5 million DDoS weapons were tracked by A10 researchers – this must be a critical area of focus. What is your sense of market sentiment now? In addition to dealing with the global health crisis, there were many ways that society has had to act in response to the challenge of Covid-19. Examples include: Rapid vaccine development, better awareness of infectious disease mitigation, and in the case of business, product targeting and streamlining transactions that will forever change how we go-to-market. This also meant that most organizations were looking at digital transformation to react quickly to meet opportunities to support and grow their businesses. And so across the board, every organization has recognized the need for digital transformation – including government, large corporations across different verticals, growing enterprises and start-up businesses. Today, while every organization understands the need for digital transformation, the sweet spot for meaningful change is at the intersection of data, cloud, and AI. However, as the volume of data increases, so does the threat to that data. It also leads to an increase in demands to utilize data, and greater requirement for more data infrastructure everywhere. As a result, IT organizations have reached the point where the complexity to manage it all creates risk and comes at a cost to innovation and time-to-market. To transform, enterprises need to fundamentally change how they manage their data and infrastructure. This can be achieved through autonomous operations, self-service, policybased automation, and mobilization from edge-to-cloud across the lifecycle of data. While, this changes everything for storage, the storage complexity continues which is the roadblock to innovation. Hence, there is a need to bring the cloud operational experience to on-premises environments. Which are the technologies driving market growth and why? Data helps drive better and faster decisions, which are required to empower any organization. However, more data means more complexity. By offering on-demand access, resource elasticity, and charges for services based on actual usage, cloud has set the standard for agility. Hence, enterprises look for the cloud experience for all their applications and all their data wherever it resides. And this is where AI comes in, as it also holds the potential to put data infrastructure on auto-pilot and make IT invisible. Additionally, AI can predict and prevent problems before they occur. As data, cloud, and AI are creating a paradigm shift in data infrastructure, our new paradigm for data infrastructure should include an approach 24 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JUNE 2021

Today, while every organization understands the need for digital transformation,
the sweet spot for meaningful change is at the intersection of data, cloud, and AI. Unified DataOps is HPE’s vision for a new data experience that integrates data-centric policies, cloud-native control, and AI-driven insights. that is cloud-native by design, purpose-built for cloud operations and consumption from edge to cloud. Which are the vertical markets driving growth? The growth of data and its usage is universally witnessed across all vertical markets. However, the key driver is how is data used and harnessed, and this is where we see some variations across verticals. For instance, in the public sector space, the focus on digital agenda means that many public services are now becoming data- and digital-enabled. We are seeing this translate to an increase in data creation and utilization. It is also
empowering data innovations and bringing in outcomes that help the citizens of the country. Driven by the pandemic, there has been an unprecedented growth of digital payments and banking services. These are driving the creation of more data and the need to simplify data infrastructure and integrate data management. Additionally, an important aspect for this segment is the need to secure and protect data. We are also witnessing a significant demand for storage solutions from the manufacturing and telecom sectors. Briefly tell us about HPE’s leadership in enterprise data storage industry including its innovations?

What is the enterprise technology market trend - specially from India perspective? Shiva: The APJ market is a great place to drive business in the context of companies and their investment strategies. If we look at the APJ market, Veeam is growing 3.5 times the market pace in the APJ region, based on the most data from recent IDC Semi-Annual Software Tracker for Data Replication & Protection 2H’20. This is very significant for India as well. The other trend we can start to see is subscription consumption. A lot of our business in the India region itself is driven by a shift from perpetual traditional models to more subscription-based technologies. With our new innovations in the data protection space, we are heading with a strategy that is aligned to the Indian market. A market that is rich in innovation and the usage of technology.

Anthony: The market has weathered the storm and has come out well. We talked about digital acceleration, which was very prevalent off the back of the pandemic last year. What has been observed is that the technology that is being used has increased business for the company to a great extent. There has been more awareness for certain technologies, but also threats as well. We understand by this that people who are working from home are aware of the ransomware and now more than ever they know that they need to protect their data as it grows. Digital transformation has become a trend and is a necessity for all organizations, and this time because of this pandemic it is accelerating very quickly. What is your observation from Veeam perspective? Shiva: When we talk about COVID-19’s impact in technology, we have seen an acceleration in adoption of Veeam solutions as compared to how it was before. Companies earlier believed that their employees should have access to data and that technology should be company’s primary focus, however as the pandemic continues to impact businesses globally, companies have accelerated their digital transformation on the premise that the pandemic is here to stay and that now they need to grow their business grow. Veeam along with Vanson Bourne recently released Veeam Data Protection Report 2021, as per the report COVID-19 has had an extraordinary effect on Digital Transformation (DX) efforts of organizations with almost two thirds 64% of Indian organizations accelerating their DX initiatives. Now as businesses grow and mature, the ability to have or be able to have confidence in backing up or protecting the data you have 26 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JUNE 2021
is extremely relevant with remote working. The workplace in itself has been decentralized as a result of the pandemic, which puts high pressure on: a) digital transformation journey of a customer, and b) protection of the customer’s data. In early stages of the pandemic, people were making sure that they were driving their business, however now businesses are in a highly competitive space, they are trying to attack, attract and retain their customer base and for that they need to transform the way in which they engage with their customers. With digital transformation, the need to introduce new products is on the rise. Our main strategy is to protect the overload of data and give our customers the confidence to release new products into the marketplace and become more competitive, whether it be B2B or B2C. Due to the pandemic, people have been working from home so the challenges like ransomware, cybersecurity and availability are on a rise. How do you ensure data protection and what are your plans to ensure data availability and security for the organizations? Anthony: If you look at our releases over the past couple of years, the focus on ransomware has always been strong but what we decided to do is leverage objects towards supportability and through object storage. We have tried to leverage the immutability features within the object storage platforms, which ensures that when a backup is taken, it is placed in a location that is going to be immutable, and therefore protecting that landing zone or the place at risk from that malicious attack. The technology solutions that we have released recently are focused on ransomware. In fact in Feb 2021 we released v11 with an additional 200 new and powerful backup, cloud, DR, security and automation enhancements. It is by far the most advanced data protection solution for Cloud, virtual, SaaS, Kubernetes and physical workloads. Therefore, from the technology point of view it is very important to understand what the market wants and how they react to these new threats and trends in the market. The best way to protect against these threats is to follow the 3-2-1 rule of backup in terms of getting two copies of your data, one off-site. However now we are adding a few zeros to the end of that rule to make sure that you have immutable copies that can also be validated and tested. This is a very big move in the field of technology. What is your focus on reskilling the people? Shiva: The skilling component is what we pride

ourselves of as a company. We are not massive, we are not a service providing organization, we have a simple, reliable, flexible product and it works. If you think about disaster recovery, the complexity of some of our competitive solutions is what causes a lot of the challenges. The other component is ways around creating some levels of automation which simplifies organization’s DX processes. In case a disaster happens leaving the whole task on a couple of human beings could also be like a key man failure. Anthony: The key part to that is education. Education, in terms of modern data platforms, how your software works and making sure that in the case of a situation, if a senior or a lead person is not available, either you write the process down or automate them. One needs to have the ability to do that. What Veeam has been able to do as a technology platform, is looking at ways to improve our APIs, our PowerShell, our automation ability, so that our customers can better leverage that to automate recovery. Now, that is still

VEEAM FOCUSSES ON PROTECTING THE OVERLOAD OF DATA The COVID-19 Pandemic has significantly affected the growth of the market, offline as well as online. We try to understand its impact on digital transformation, cybersecurity, data protection through our conversation with Veeam’s Senior Vice President – Asia Pacific and Japan, Shiva Pillay and their Senior Global Technologist, Anthony Spiteri. not 100% there, because you still do need people to hit the switch, and press the button and do the DIR. But more and more, what we have seen is that customers are consuming us once they have installed the platform, they are then doing automatic recovery testing. Veeam has a feature in the backup and replication product for years which is called Veeam DataLabs. It allows you to verify and validate a backup on an occasion and it automatically builds the application up in a sandbox which lets you test it. Once the button is pressed, you can then transfer the data into production. This technology is built in but as mentioned before the future is based on automation and as a company we are trying to help our customers get over these hurdles. With regards to the partner’s piece, we have what is called the Veeam Accredited Services Program. Over here an investment is made to help them to scale up the skills and we help subsidize their ability to pick up those particular skills. This is so that they can better serve their customers. With changing needs and work, different kinds of deployments can be looked into. By this we are not only taking care of the customers but also with our partner and alliances ecosystem to make them more effective.
Does Veeam have any training program certification? How are you positioned on the front seat? Shiva: We have a training program, we have an accreditation program. To better support partners and increase partner engagement as well as encourage focused products and solutions adoption, Veeam offers a variety of network programs that allows ease of access and cater to all our partner needs. This includes: • Veeam Technology Alliance Program (VTAP): Designed to drive higher market share and profitability for our alliance partners through joint development efforts and strategic activities that increase industry awareness and sales. • Veeam ProPartner Network: Allows our global ecosystem of partners to work directly and indirectly with one another and is a means of allowing them to stay connected with our global community and have access to customized programs, tools, and resources. Veeam Accredited Service Partner (VASP): Enables partners to differentiate their offerings and achieve value realization to drive customer success Veeam’s accreditation and constant training programs are designed at working with partners

and upskilling them in technology areas like backup, data management and Kubernetes. It’s a combination of acquiring We have Veeam’s services professionals, we have a ton of accreditation, and we are quite aggressive in how we work with our partners and make sure that we are getting our partners accredited. Veeam does not have a very heavy services footprint and that heavy services footprint comes with the complexity of some technology. I would say it is probably from the simplicity of the product. We do have training and education available, we continue to make investments in training programs across geographies, we are working more and more to make sure India is well represented.
