LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL FESTIVAL Two-day music, art, and food festival required interference-free RF coverage When the firstever Life Is Beautiful festival took over 15 square blocks of downtown Las Vegas on, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) was on location providing frequency coordination for the more than 80 musical acts, performers, and media outlets throughout the two-day celebration. The Life is Beautiful festival featured a diverse lineup of musical acts from a variety of genres including The Killers, Kings of Leon, Beck, Vampire Weekend, Imagine Dragons, Janelle Monae, Passion Pit, Jurassic 5, Danny Brown, Childish Gambino Pretty Lights, STS9 and Empire of the Sun, to name a few. PWS has experience in providing frequency coordination for large events, but this one was not without its challenges. Because the festival was situated over a large area right in the middle of downtown Las Vegas near Fremont Street, there was a lot to consider logistically. For example, PWS employees had to arrive two days before the event to conduct a frequency sweep so that they could identify all frequencies in the area. And four company staff members were onsite during the entire two-day celebration to monitor and ensure that potential issues were kept to a minimum. With six stages and more than 520 frequencies, PWS used its proprietary Intermodulation Analysis Software (IAS) and spectrum analyzers to determine occupied bandwidth and track interference sources, ensuring that both the musical acts and attending media were on a safe frequency, once located. PWS worked closely with Another Planet, the production company for the festival, and all the stage managers, before and during the event to 6

have as much information as possible about the wireless requirements needed by all of the performers and media. PWS also established and coordinated frequencies for the PA companies, including VER Audio and Solotech, to use for the entire weekend. Last minute changes occurred, but the PWS crew made sure that the final result
turned out great. In addition to managing frequency coordination, PWS’ Domed Helicals as well as its original Helical Antennas, were onsite for the festival. The PWS Domed Helical Antenna boasts the highly successful circular polarization configuration, pioneered by the company’s original Helical, but with the unit sealed within a unique new compact “domed” design. In addition to GX-8 Combiners that are already a part of several of the bands’ rigs, PWS had extra GX-8 Combiners on-hand in case the need arose. One of the musical acts was so impressed with the GX-8 that the group decided to use the product for its next show. PWS’ GX series of combiners, the GX-4 and GX-8, offer selectable high and low output settings as well as above unity gain on output. Helpful for very anemic transmitters, the combiners in the GX series are considered RF limiters because of their proprietary Automatic Level Control (ALC) circuitry.

LIGHTWAVE 11.6 AND NEVRONMOTION RELEASES These products offer advanced previsualization, production, and 3D printing tools in LightWave 11.6; NevronMotion plug-in for the Microsoft Kinect camera captures, and retargets motion in LightWave 11.6 The LightWave 3D速 Group has announced the final release of LightWave 11.6 software for 3D modeling, animation, and rendering. Also announced was the final release of the NevronMotion plug-in for LightWave 11.6, which uses the Microsoft Kinect camera to capture motion in real time for retargeting to 3D or live-performance characters. NevronMotion simplifies retargeting data from standard motion capture files directly into the LightWave interface. Created by artists for artists, LightWave 11.6 introduces many ways for artists and designers to model, animate, capture, retarget, and input and output to 3D. New features allow users to: Animate in New Ways: With the Spline Control tool, nulls or other objects act as nodes in a spline to control or deform objects such as tentacles, tails, whips or even
elevators; Raycast Motion uses raycasting technology to make an animated object aware of its surroundings; and the Compound Node feature can simplify complex networks down to a single node. Streamline Real-Time Virtual Production, Pre-Viz, and Game Development: Use NVIDIA CgFX shader technology to create 3D assets for virtual production, pre-visualization, or game development and view assets within LightWave OpenGL exactly as they will appear in the final real-time display engine. Users can also place Normal Maps on 3D objects to make lower-polygon objects or characters display as higher-resolution objects, and create custom CgFX shaders or use existing CgFX shaders. Output to 3D Printers: LightWave Modeler includes import and export options to support popular STL and
3d printing support in LightWave 11.6.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD Giant screen film transports audiences to the hidden dimensions of our everyday universe invisible to the human eye
Scientists are on the threshold of extraordinary advances born of our drive to see all that is hidden in the world around us. Each day, trail-blazing researchers are pushing the envelope with new technologies to peer with increasing clarity into these once-invisible dimensions. A new 3D/2D giant screen film takes audiences on an extraordinary journey into these unseen worlds beyond our normal vision to uncover the mysteries of things that are too fast, too slow, too small or simply invisible. MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD, narrated by Forest Whitaker, is an original production by National Geographic Entertainment and Days End Pictures premiering in giant-screen, IMAX® and digital 3-D cinemas in 3-D, 2-D, 15/70 and digital formats in the USA and worldwide beginning November 8, 2013. MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD allows viewers to see things not visible to the naked eye, thanks to the film’s innovative use of high-speed and time-lapse photography, electron microscopy, and nanotechnology. Audiences peer into unseen dimensions once reserved only for scientists to see a whole new universe of wondrous nature, daily events that escape the naked eye, and secrets crucial to our survival. The discoveries portrayed in the film are culled from those happening today in laboratories around the world, where
existing and emerging technologies are yielding exciting new images of long-hidden worlds. Produced by Lisa Truitt (Mysteries of Egypt) and Jini Dürr (Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure), and directed by Louie Schwartzberg (Disneynature: Wings of Life), the 40-minute large format film is brought to dramatic life through a mesmerizing lens by a team of award-winning veteran filmmakers using cutting-edge technology and visual techniques. MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD immerses audiences in mind-bending dimensions that enhance our understanding of the planet, said Lisa Truitt, president of National Geographic Entertainment. The film exemplifies National Geographic’s dedication to creating films that inspire people with the wonder and possibilities of science.” The premise of this new giant screen film experience is looking at the world through a variety of imaging technologies that allow audiences to see beyond what they can with the naked eye, Producer Jini Dürr shared. Absolutely everyone will walk away with either new knowledge or a new vision of the world around them.
INVISIBLE:
We see only a fraction of the millions of wavelengths www.entertainmentengineering.com

in the vast electromagnetic spectrum-- the rainbow of light waves called visible light. The film shows audiences what it would be like if we had X-ray vision, or infrared vision like a mosquito, how a bees eyes see through ultraviolet light, and what Gamma rays, microwaves and radio waves show us.
TOO SLOW:
Time-lapse images capture mundane events and the spectacles of life that happen too slowly for humans to perceive. Packed with stunning visuals, the film includes sequences of plants creeping toward the sun and astonishingly complex slime mold searching for food. On a grander scale, time-lapse allows audiences to see our planet in motion from the vast and relentless sweep of nature to the restless movement of humanity.
TOO FAST:
How many secrets remain to be discovered in the super-fast worlds of nature? High-speed cameras do the opposite of time-lapse. The film shows extraordinary events that happen too quickly for human perception-from a rattlesnake strike to drum cymbals flexing. Eyepopping slow-motion sequences shot using high-speed photography include a Eurasian Eagle Owl, the world’s largest, flexing its wings, shot at 600 frames per second (FPS); a basilisk or Jesus lizard running on the surface of water shot at about 1,000 FPS; popcorn popping at about 2,500 FPS; and lightning that, shot using a Phantom camera at about 10,000 FPS, is revealed to rise upwards from the ground as well as strike from the sky.
TOO SMALL:
The film also peers into the world of wonders too small for the human eye to see--from the minute structures on a butterfly’s wing and the tiny organisms that inhabit the human body all the way down to nano-scale structures. We see how the amazing electron microscope can create an image that magnifies things by as much as a million times--revealing a world that is both bizarre and beautiful and challenging filmgoers to guess which unusual image is a fruit flys eye, the skin of a shark, a flea on a cat, a tomato stem, an eggshell, and more! MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD then moves from the familiar events of everyday life to the building blocks of matter itself. The filmmakers worked 10
www.entertainmentengineering.com
with a 3-D medical animation company to depict the atom-scale realm of nano-science and potential innovations in nanotechnology. In another complex zoom sequence, the shot moves in on a spider, then a strand of its silk, then into the silk itself where audiences see a bacterium. The camera then zooms even deeper, in on a virus on the bacterium, then into the DNA of the virus and finally into the actual atoms of the DNA. The film was created in collaboration with a variety of groundbreaking scientific, data, computer graphic and 3-D animation companies, as well as scientists at MIT, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Center for Cellular Imaging and NanoAnalytics (C-CINA) a research laboratory at the University of Basel in Switzerland. MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD was funded in part by a grant from the National Science foundation and a generous contribution from Lockheed Martin for the film and educational outreach. FEI, a manufacturer of electron microscopes, contributed to the film and extended learning stations for theaters. Visually captivating, entertaining and rooted in cutting-edge research, MYSTERIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD takes us beyond the limits of our own human vision and transports us to an enthralling secret world full of breathtaking phenomena.
