A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing.

To be eligible for becoming an IPS officer, the candidate must possess a degree from an Indian University or an equivalent qualification. Those in the final year of a degree course can also appear in the Preliminary Examination taken every year by UPSC. The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years on 1st August of the year of examination and must not have attained 30 years of age on that date.

There are diverse areas of police work, such as the Criminal Investigation Department, Firearms Unit, Dogs Section, Air Operations, Security and more. There are also other branches like the air unit, drug trafficking and narcotics unit, cyber crime cell, administrative services etc.

An Assistant Commissioner has pay scale starting from basic Rs.12,000/- while that of a sub-inspector starts from Rs.5,000/- basic. Constables earn Rs.4,500/- basic in addition various other benefits/allowances. However, experience, qualification and promotion are the ultimate deciding factors.
