SPARKING INNOVATION

BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS

Our first workshop took place on October 3 with the selected entrepreneurs/businesses. The workshop’s topic was entitled Sparking innovation, which was instructed by Mr. Carlinton Burrell from the Ministry of Agriculture, Scientific Research Council. The Entrepreneurs were extremely engaged and several questions were asked and answered, which indeed sparked innovation amongst the entrepreneurs.

Business Model Canvas was the topic of this workshop, held on October 10, which was instructed by Mr. Colin Bennett from the Mona Entrepreneurial Commercialization Centre (MECC). Mr. Bennett’s knowledge and expertise in the subject area was often called upon by our very engaged and knowledge seeking entrepreneurs. Mr. Bennett most certainly relayed a great deal of knowledge within the two (2) hour session, for which we and our entrepreneurs were very grateful.

MARKETING

Our third workshop took place on October 24 in the Guild Executive Room and was instructed by Mr. Duane McIntosh, entitled Business Marketing. The entrepreneurs were able to ask questions and get feedback on their businesses and how to better market them as well as some of the steps that can be taken to do so. The knowledge imparted to the entrepreneurs was priceless and well received. The entrepreneurs were very much so engaged with Mr. McIntosh even after the lengthy training session.

FINANCE

Our Business Financing workshop was hosted at the Jamaica National Marketing Building and instructed by Ms. ShanaKaye Wright and her team, on November 7. Not only did the entrepreneurs enjoy a new environment, but a refreshing training session on how to manage their businesses’ finances. Ms. Wright was able to teach our young entrepreneurs very important skills which are integral to any successful business. The entrepreneurs were able to implement the information given in this training session directly to their own business, which led them one step closer to being even more successful and reaching their maximum potential.

LEGALITY OF BUSINESS

Our final workshop was entitled Legality of Business which was instructed by Jamaica Intellectual Property Office’s (JIPO) very own Dr. Marcus Goffe and Mr. Herman Dawson, on November 21. This workshop was the ‘icing on the cake’ and what sealed the entrepreneurs’ business plans. Dr. Goffe and Mr. Dawson, gave the entrepreneurs real life situations with regards to businesses and their legality and how a business might be affected if not done legally and according to regulations. They gave instructions on how to research and ensure their businesses aren’t infringing on another business’ trade mark(s)as well as not inadvertently stealing another’s intellectual property. The entrepreneurs were able to research and revise if necessary their business plans to ensure it was legal, therefore concretizing their plans to move forward. Dr. Goffe and Mr. Dawson were greatly appreciated.
