How to Cultivate a Positive Work Environment

Have you ever been part of a toxic work environment? Did you feel like your higher-ups were failing to protect staf from bullying and harassment? Toxicity in the workplace comes in many diferent shapes and sizes but, with a number of high-profle claims appearing in the news in recent months, managers throughout the UK must act to prevent a toxic work culture from forming.

So, how can you ensure that you’re doing everything you can to protect your workplace and workforce? Lisa Branker, Head of Employment and HR at specialist employment solicitors Beecham Peacock, reveals some of the best ways you can discourage toxic behaviour and ensure that your employees feel valued.

Key fndings

• At the end of December 2023, 60 senior women at the Ministry of Justice complained of a “hostile” and “toxic” environment.

• 44% of respondents to a survey of the UK astronomy sector had sufered workplace bullying or harassment in the previous 12 months.

• In November 2023, a BBC investigation into McDonald’s found that the fast food chain experienced an average of one or two sexual harassment claims every week.

• 32% of respondents to the Oak Engage report revealed that they had experienced toxic workplace behaviour in the form of being forced to work long hours.

• 33% of respondents to the Oak Engage report found that it was middle managers perpetuating the toxicity in their workplace, rather than top-level management.

• 12% of respondents to the CIPD’s People Management and Productivity Survey said their managers had received no training on managing people. This occurs most often in smaller workplaces.

• Setting healthy boundaries ensures positive relationships are maintained between your team and their jobs.

• Proper recognition of good behaviour – and condemnation of bad behaviour – is essential to maintaining a positive atmosphere.

Are toxic workplaces becoming more common?

Part of the issue with referring to workplaces as toxic, notes Branker, is that the word “toxic” is such a loose defnition.

“In recent years,” she says, “such a wide variety of workplace ofences have been referred to as toxic, that it has become difcult to quantify which behaviours fall into that bracket.”

The UK government defnes toxicity in the workplace as “workplace bullying and harassment”. However, other defnitions have also been applied typically pointing to some combination of “negativity, discouragement and disrespect.”

Widespread cases of hostility and harassment in various sectors and international businesses have made the news in recent months. At the end of December 2023, 60 senior women at the Ministry of Justice complained of a “hostile” and “toxic” work environment.

MPs recently also heard of the “shocking” levels of bullying and harassment present in the UK’s astronomy sector, where 44% of respondents to a workplace survey had sufered workplace bullying or harassment in the previous 12 months. Perhaps most high-profle of all was the BBC investigation into McDonalds’ culture of toxicity, which found that the fast food chain experienced an average of one or two sexual harassment claims every week.

Branker notes that many workers are unaware of the “protections in place for people dealing with discrimination and harassment at work.” The onus to protect employees must lie with a company’s management team, who should be doing everything in their power to ensure that toxicity is not allowed to thrive in the workplace.

Allow room for mistakes

In any workplace with a human workforce mistakes are inevitably made at some point or another. Giving your team room to make mistakes can help reduce the likelihood of toxicity arising. When an employer is overly harsh or punitive in dealing with their employees’ mistakes, tension surrounding day-to-day tasks increases.

“Give your team the chance to make a mistake in the frst instance – this is how people learn!” says Branker. “Repeated mistakes mean sloppy work, which requires a separate conversation. But excessive punishment for frst-time mistakes means employees will be walking on eggshells from the start.”

Set healthy boundaries

Workplaces where employees have to work excessively long hours – and particularly hours outside of their standard working hours – commonly fall into the “toxic” bracket. Management may be consistently asking employees to work more hours than they should, or to be prepared to respond to client enquiries on evenings or weekends.

32% of respondents to an Oak Engage report on toxicity reported that they had experienced toxic workplace behaviour in the form of being forced to work long hours.

Healthy habits from the top down

33% of UK respondents to the same Oak Engage report that had experienced a toxic workplace culture found that it was middle managers perpetuating the toxicity, rather than toplevel management executives. Similarly, 34% of respondents felt that their business’s working culture was not aligned with how the company would like to represent themselves.

This disconnect highlights the importance of implementing proper working practices at all levels of the company. “Management must be trained on how to properly interact with the workforce and handle issues properly when they arise,” says Branker.

12% of respondents to the CIPD’s People Management and Productivity Survey said their managers had received no training on managing people. This occurs most often in smaller workplaces, rather than larger companies.

Upper management must take an active interest in the company’s people policies and culture and implement training to ensure positive values are passed on. As such, the results can trickle down through all areas of the company.

Celebrate successes

Though much of toxic workplace culture is rooted in negative attitudes and responses to negative events, failure to recognise positive performance can be another indicator of toxicity.

One commonly held gripe arises when employees feel their work is not recognised by management. Often, there’s a signifcant disjoint between how well managers feel they are rewarding their team and how well their employees feel that they are being rewarded. In fact, 80% of managers believe they provide good recognition to their staf, while just 40% of employees feel they are adequately recognised for their hard work.

Gary Chapman, in his book Rising Above a Toxic Workplace: Taking Care of Yourself in an Unhealthy Environment, notes that “people thrive when they feel appreciated by their colleagues and supervisors – and that means they sense the appreciation is heartfelt and authentic.” Peer recognition is 35.7% more likely to positively impact performance than recognition from management.

Hold people accountable

In certain workplaces, the culture of toxicity may not be created by management but will be tolerated by them. It’s important that you and the rest of your management team hold other members of the team responsible for their actions and their conduct. This approach will establish an understanding that these issues will not be tolerated. Spotting these indiscretions and failing to take action gives the ofender confdence that their behaviour is fne or can be tolerated – leading to the worsening of workplace bullying.

“Lead by example,” comments Branker, “and the overall culture will beneft. Speak up when you see bad behaviour taking place without intervention. It’s important that any other members of the team who have witnessed the harassment taking place understand that such behaviour won’t be tolerated.”

If you’re currently working in a toxic workplace with limited support from management, it’s important that you’re aware of the options and facilities available to you, as well as the legal precedent set in the event of similar events taking place. Understanding whether you have a case against your employer, or those members of staf perpetuating your toxic working culture, is key and may require legal advice from a dedicated employment solicitor. Equally, if you are an employer who is concerned about toxicity in your workplace, HR support and management training from a specialist employment law and HR specialist can help to tackle and prevent such behaviour. It’s absolutely vital that employers create a culture where any workplace bullying, harassment or toxicity is not tolerated.

How to Start a Podcast That Will Really Boost Your Business

Podcasts have become a global phenomenon increasingly used by business. Did you know that in the UK, over 21 million people regularly listen to podcasts? And the audience is not just the young; 22% of people over the age of 56 listen to podcasts.

Given the popularity of this relatively new medium, you may wonder whether starting a podcast will beneft your startup. As approximately 50% of all listeners tune in to learn and develop their understanding, podcasting can be an excellent way of demonstrating your industry sector knowledge and positioning yourself as a thought leader. Even short podcast series have attracted hundreds of thousands of listeners.

The difculty with podcasting is the learning curve required to get the content right. Of course, it has to be interesting and engaging, but there’s also lots of technology and production to get right as well. Additionally, most podcasts now combine audio and video content, which increases the complexity.

With these challenges for the busy startup founder in mind, lets look at four key benefts of starting a podcast along with some tips to get you of to a good start.

1.Leveraging the popularity of podcasts

The key reason to look into starting a podcast for your startup is simply that people like listening to them. Also, they are borderless as you can publish to Apple Music, Spotify etc. and reach a global audience.

The challenge is in cutting through the noise, something you will already be familiar with as an entrepreneur. It’s hard to pin down a specifc number, but estimates suggest that there are three-fve million podcasts worldwide.

So how do you get noticed by your target audience? For example, a way is to demonstrate your commitment is to release 3-5 episodes in one go. That way you’re much more likely to be featured in the ‘New and Interesting’ section on Apple Music and Spotify.

Another way of getting found is to use podcast SEO. Just like regular SEO, you need to understand your target keywords and use them in a well-curated podcast description as well as your episode synopses. It’s always good to include transcripts of the podcast as well, not only for great SEO but also to beneft those who are hard of hearing (or who just prefer written content). The transcript can also be converted into captions for video content.

Adding timestamps and other markups to your YouTube videos also makes them more searchable. Again, knowing your audience and keywords is essential to ensure that your podcasts speak to your audience’s questions using searchable words and phrases.

If you really want to gain traction fast, you should consider

some advertising. Create some short clips and trailers for your podcast and funnel some money into advertising on YouTube, Spotify and/or Apple Music. Make sure your ads are no longer than 15 seconds in order to grab interest and tease the content.

Finally, a great way of attracting a new audience is by featuring guests on your podcast…

2.Cross promotion opportunities

Including guests is a great way to cross-promote your podcast and piggyback on your guest’s existing audience. Featuring guests also enhances the perception of you as both an entrepreneur and as a thought leader. It also adds variety to your content.

However, guests can pose a number of challenges. If a guest cancels at the last minute or is a no-show it can be embarrassing, especially when you will have been trailing their appearance.

A top tip is, once you have booked the guest, to immediately book their travel and accommodation, even when this is just an Uber to the studio. The beneft is that it locks them into a commitment, and they will be much less likely to back out.

One way of dealing with a guest who can’t make it is to switch to a remote interview. While video calls may sufer from connection difculties or from low quality, they are clearly better than nothing. If you are working with an established studio, you might also have the opportunity to send the guest to their local studio to do the recording, thus avoiding loss in quality.

If all else fails, have a backup plan. If you pin all of your content ideas on your guest showing up once in a while you’ll be caught short. Always have backup content ideas and a host who knows how to adapt on the fy.

If you are featuring a guest, always have an introduction meeting before recording. The meeting will help you get to know the guest and form a relationship between the guest and the host translating into a warmer, friendlier relationship on air.

3.Podcasts are interactive and engaging

Of all forms of content, podcasts are one of the most interactive. Whether your startup’s product or service lends itself to a podcast that is incredibly niche or fairly broad and generic, there will be people interested in listening and learning more.

What’s more, people will have opinions on what you are sharing which means that you can get genuine interactions with your listeners. Interaction tends to happen in either as: asynchronous interaction via comments, instant interaction

via livestream commenting, or real-time interaction if you have call-ins.

Find ways to include interaction within your podcast and you’ll create a lot of audience engagement. Comments can also be very useful when coming up with new content ideas, or you could include a Q&A segment within your regular podcast. All of which will help you share your entrepreneurial vision and attract interest in your startup.

4. Podcasts are multi-format

One of the best business cases for podcasts that entrepreneurs should bear in mind is that the content can be easily chopped into a multitude of formats for diferent channels. A long-form podcast can be turned into clips for social media and YouTube, segments for marketing/advertising, and even repurposed as blog posts.

And if you are working with a tight budget for your start up its good to know that among all content types, podcasts are perhaps the most multi-purpose, making them one of the most cost-efective too. A single 30-minute episode could produce a hundred pieces of content as social clips, soundbites, and blogs.

Getting content that can be chunked down into pleasing soundbites is, however, harder than you might imagine. It’s all down to your pre-production , it takes a lot of planning to fnd the ideal structure for the episode. You also need a good host who knows how to summarise things neatly, when to pause and when to move things along.

If you are featuring a guest, let them know the questions in advance so that they can prepare useful and concise answers that are far richer in information. It’s always hard to think of everything in the moment. It is then the job of the host to make the questions seem natural and organic despite the preparation.

It can also be useful to coach less experienced guests on how to minimise fller words like ‘err’ and ‘erm’ and when to take pauses. A guest who talks at length, with lots of fller words and very few pauses, makes for a difcult editing process. How can you chunk up an endless stream of speech?

One idea can be to have an agreed signal, such as the host raising their hand slightly, so the guest knows when to bring their sentence to a natural end so the host can speak. This also helps minimise crosstalk, another nightmare for the editing room!

If you are setting up cameras to record video content at the same time, it’s always best to have a few diferent angles set up. Then, when it comes to editing, you can simply switch between angles to make the cuts appear seamless.

A fnal tip to help with editing is to have someone of camera making note of the times when particularly interesting things were said. This makes the editor’s job a lot easier and means you know how to market the episode before the fnal edit is complete.

Podcasts can be an amazing marketing tool for startups. They do, however, take a lot of planning to get right. Between

content, production, marketing, guests, hosting and editing, there are lots of pieces that need to align.

These tips should help you get started. However, it is always useful to have at least one person on your startup team who has experience in producing podcasts, or alternatively, use an agency who’ll help you to get everything right the frst time.

Production quality really does matter, not only does it keep your audience engaged but it ensures that the content can be used for a multitude of channels, giving you the best value for money as you take your startup forward

How to Stand Out by Being Human

For any entrepreneur with a business that relies on some form of written content (articles, blogs, marketing material, social media, etc), the arrival of ChatGPT with its ability to rapidly generate text on any topic will have piqued some interest. Suddenly, articles can be written at the push of a button. But is that a good thing?

Social Media platforms are not discouraging AI generated content. LinkedIn has built AI text generation into its platform and plenty of third-party post generators are available. The result is a race to the bottom as content creators spew forth a stream of empty content competing for our attention. There is only one way to stand out against this food of computergenerated text: the reader must be able to connect with you, the human behind your message.

The Turing Test is why everything changed in 2023: Back in 1950 computer pioneer Alan Turing set out a simple test to establish a computer’s intelligence: he called it the imitation game. To pass the test, the computer must generate text indistinguishable from a human’s writing. After decades of failure the test has now been turned on its head. Now the machine can pass as human, so we must demonstrate that we are more than a machine.

The good news is that there is a well-established model to help us do this: The SUCCESS model. To stand out as human you need to create: Simple Unexpected Concrete Credible Emotional Stories.

Let’s play the imitation game.

Consider these two reviews for a restaurant. Only one of them was written by a human.

Version 1

“If you visit Riyadh, a good place to eat is the Nadj Village restaurant. Beautiful castle-like building with an open courtyard in the middle with running water and ‘booths’ with rugs and cushions. You leave your shoes outside the booth. We ordered a mix of dishes. Delicious. And very reasonably priced.”

Version 2

“Riyadh in Nadj Village is a hidden gem that transports you to a diferent world with its castle-like building, open courtyard with running water, and cozy booth seating adorned with rugs and cushions. The fact that it ofers all of this at reasonable prices is a delightful surprise. Whether you’re a local looking for a unique dining experience or a visitor wanting to savor Middle Eastern cuisine in an enchanting setting, Riyadh is a must-visit.”

It isn’t difcult to tell the frst version is from a human, but why do you fnd it more engaging? The SUCCESS model makes it clear.

The frst review is simple, getting straight to the point, it

tells us exactly what we want to know. It is also concrete, painting a mental picture with just a handful of words. The AI’s superfuous ornamentation dilutes the impact. Most importantly, the frst review is credible with believable, grounded language. The restaurant is “a good place to eat” that is “reasonably priced.” The AI cannot resist spicing its text with hyperbole, insisting that this “unique dining experience” is a “must-visit” that will “transport you to a diferent world.” It is all just too much.

ChatGPT struggles with these basics. The paragraph above was taken from 376 words of generated content. The other 281 words were boring, stretching credulity, and adding nothing of value. Perhaps, in time, these issues will be resolved.

The three remaining points of the SUCCESS model will prove much more difcult for AI to overcome: stories containing emotion and the unexpected.

Did you notice that the diners took their shoes of before entering the booths? Of course, because it is unexpected. When was the last time you dined out barefoot? Humans are always attracted to surprising details, but being surprising is difcult for ChatGPT. As a Large Language Model (LLM) ChatGPT works similarly to Google Complete. If you go to Google and type “Dining” it will try to guess what word comes next, suggesting words like “chair,” “table” and “room.”

These suggestions are based on the words that typically follow “dining” in the training data. ChatGPT is always trying to predict what word is most likely to come next. To keep things interesting, it avoids the most obvious word, instead picking at random from a list of alternatives. It has never visited a restaurant, tasted food, or enjoyed a night with friends. It has only read about them. You are a human being, just like your reader, and both of you have shared these experiences. This is how you know the details that are important, interesting, and surprising to your reader.

Human emotions are even more inaccessible to computers, but they are aware of their importance. Like a teenage poet they overcompensate for their lack of experience by striving for heightened emotions that feel inauthentic. It is the prosaic emotions of everyday life that stand out as human. We don’t see it in the text of our review, but it is clear in the accompanying picture showing a group of women who are comfortable in the cushioned booth and each other’s company. They are obviously enjoying their hard-earned rest.

The ultimate weapon in your human arsenal is the story. If you ask ChatGPT to write a story it will create something strange and dreamlike because of its limited memory. Once the context window is full, older details are forgotten. Human lives tell stories that span weeks and years. For example, the review is one of a series of posts journalling a visit to the 2023 Riyadh International Book Fair. A single chapter in an ongoing story.

Businesses communicating with established and prospective

customers have something very powerful. A shared story that is either in progress or about to begin. You are providing something that they need, joining together in a mutually benefcial relationship. Human relationships are rich and complex, spinning a myriad of narratives.

Now, take a look at what you are writing. Is it simple, credible and real? How can you weave those stories into your text? How can you surprise your readers and make them feel emotion? By applying the SUCCESS model, you will show your readers and potential clients that you are human and connect

with them in a way that no machine ever could.

What Entrepreneurs Can Learn From Elite Sports

Whether starting a new business or running an established company, you will set goals. These goals will form part of your assessment of the business’s success. But is hitting targets enough? Could the bar you are clearing be higher? Are you and your business truly performing well?

A tennis player needs to do more than win service games, a racing driver needs to do more than take pole position on the grid, and a football team needs to win more than local derbies. Whilst Formula One, tennis and football are very diferent, they share commonality in how they organise themselves regarding performance, and entrepreneurs should take note of the myths these elite sports reject.

Myth 1: You have to be performing 100% of the time Sport professionals only perform at key moments. We have termed this the ‘performance window’. It represents the time period or event where someone needs to be performing at their most intensive, focused way, with no distractions. By reserving maximum focus and energy for key moments, sports people are able to perform more sustainably and get better results. After all, if you put 100% of your energy into your training, then you will have little left in the tank when you really need it.

Organisations could learn a lot by adopting the concept of a performance window. Many employees believe they have to be giving 100% (or even 110% – whatever that actually means) to be doing a good job. While a lot of essential work is done outside of the performance window—planning, preparation, experimenting, training and practice—the key is that the intensity, focus and emotional energy expending in these tasks should not equal that of the performance window.

Myth 2: If people are working hard, they are performing Be careful of confating efort with performance. People can direct a lot of energy, love and care into something in the hope that their efort will be rewarded, but this is not performance. In sports this is the equivalent of rewarding the person who came last in the race because they tried hard, even if they lacked skill. This is fne at the school sports day, but in elite sports, rewards are based on your ability to win, to do better than the competition, regardless of how hard you tried.

The problem with acknowledging efort alone is that organisations end up with more of what is rewarded. If you reward people for working hard, instead of outcomes, you will just get exhausted people trying to make even more heroic eforts in order to be appreciated. Instead, focus on defning performance outcomes for teams, individuals and the organisation overall. If people understand where they need to head towards, they will focus their energy on that, rather than attempting to prove themselves in a way that adds nothing to the organisation and may well be detrimental to all.

Myth 3: Resting is taking a holiday

Well-rested people think more clearly, have better judgement and are more productive. Why wouldn’t you want more of this? The answer, as elite sports know well, lies in the art of taking the right kind of rest. This is something elite sports do much better than organisations. Sports people are highly competitive, so it can be hard to get them to stop or slow down. But science informs much of the elite sports rest cycle in a way that the sports professional can see how the rest phase actually helps performance.

The secret is that in elite sports you rest what you would use to perform, you do not do nothing. Elite sports professionals are usually resting their physical body but may still be very active in the rest phase. For example, footballers commonly play golf during the of season, professional golfers hit the gym after competitive rounds to balance the body after a lot of repetition, tennis players cool down using an exercise bike. They don’t just perform and then sit still.

Organisations that tend to think that holiday is the only time to rest actually miss an opportunity to use rest as part of the performance cycle. Much of the denial of a rest phase in organisational work is the concern that it will be perceived as a weakness of some kind, but in fact it could be your secret sauce. The term ‘a change is as good as a rest’ was coined for a reason, but rather than doing lots of random activity you can design your rest phase so that it enhances your performance by resting whatever part you use to perform in your work.

For example, if you are a leader carrying a lot of emotional burden for your team and this is an important part of your performance, you may need emotional rest. Some leaders who ft into this category plan their one-to-ones so that they have a week each month with none so that they can focus on a technical aspect of their work, giving them a break from the emotional aspect of their work. If your work involves a lot of focused thinking, you may need mental rest, so maybe working in a more practical way or in collaboration with others for some time gives you respite from that aspect of your work.

Learning from elite sports

While many organisations seek sustainable performance, the reality is often a performance struggle. This can be very demoralising for leaders and employees. While strategists talk about the importance of metrics, so much of what makes an organisation work is how its people are organised and motivated. Drawing insights from elite sports, entrepreneurs can reshape their approach to performance. Embracing a nuanced understanding of efort, optimising performance windows, and redefning rest can pave the way for sustainable success in the corporate arena.

How to Improve Your Public Speaking Skills

Ten top tips from the newly crowned Toastmasters International UK Public Speaking champion Anthony Garvey to help you do just that.

As an entrepreneur you need to be able to speak in front of a multiplicity of audiences and do so with conviction and authority. That way you’ll hold their interest and be in a strong position to win them over. This is the case whether you are speaking to potential investors, customers or industry groups.

From my experience in business, and as a public speaking champion, let me share some tips to help you as you move your startup onwards and upwards.

Know your audience

Who are you presenting to and what are they turning up to hear? If you are delivering an investor or sales pitch for example, do some research in advance on the people sitting across the table from you. By checking out their LinkedIn profles, you can tell if they are interested in getting straight down to business to talk about the numbers or if they prefer to get to know people frst. This will allow you to adjust your presentation style accordingly. If you are presenting online, ask people to turn on their cameras, keep them on mute, but encourage them to ask questions at the appropriate time and add comments in the chat.

Visualise a successful outcome

Imagine the audience reacting positively, see them smiling and applauding and run that image through your head several times before you begin to speak. If it is a live presentation, turn up at the venue early and greet the people who are attending as they come in. Then when you are delivering your presentation, look for the positive faces who are wishing you well and supporting you as you are speaking.

Record your presentation

Use your phone and record one of your practice sessions. Watch it back and check your content, your body language and your eye contact. If there are elements you need to improve on, change them. If you are presenting online, practice in front of a mirror. Facial reactions are really important on the small screen, so keep your expressions in check. Record the actual session too, so you can review it afterwards. And remember, the more you practice, the better you get!

Make use of pauses

Take the time to pause when you say something really important in your presentation. Highlight those moments in your script in advance and when you deliver them, take the time to look around the room to ensure the audience is getting the message. Ask yourself what single sentence you would like the attendees to take away and remember from your presentation. Once you identify this key message, make

sure you focus on getting it across efectively. Repetition is good here and don’t forget to pause after you deliver it! If you momentarily lose your thread when speaking taking a sip of water is another kind of pause that will enable you to clear your head and get yourself back on track.

Alter your tactics

Be prepared to alter your tactics during a presentation, particularly during a sales or investor pitch. If you notice you are not connecting or people don’t seem as interested as you would like them to be, change your approach. Maybe you could ditch the slides and speak to the audience directly. Perhaps you could interact with the attendees more. Think on your feet and if you feel it isn’t working, do something diferently.

Be a volunteer speaker

Particularly if you are an inexperienced or nervous speaker take every opportunity to practice and improve your public speaking and presenting skills. Volunteer to chair meetings for your local charity, sit on committees, attend conferences etc. It’s also well worth watching and listening to top speakers to pick up tips on how to improve. You can do this in person or online. Whatever your level of experience, the way to improve your presenting is to do more of it.

Visit a Toastmasters club

Drop into a Toastmasters International club, either in person or online. There are more than 16,000 clubs in 145 countries. Toastmasters teaches you how to manage your fear of public speaking, schools you in leadership and communication skills, helps you run meetings efectively, and encourages you to develop listening and evaluation skills. All activities that are invaluable to entrepreneurs. You are welcome to drop in as a guest, to see if the club you have chosen suits you. As a member, you’ll have a mentor to help you on your speaking journey, to achieve your communication and leadership goals.

Get Feedback on Your Performance

Think about how you did after your presentation. Did you connect with the audience? Did you feel comfortable as you spoke? How could you improve when you present next? Use your presentations as a learning experience and as an opportunity to grow and improve. It can also help to ask someone in the audience that you trust to give you a private evaluation afterwards so you get an objective view of how you performed and how you can do even better next time. And if you have concerns about particular aspects of your presenting, you can ask your evaluator to keep an eye on them.

Get prepared for Q&As

Many speakers work hard on their presentation, but they often forget about the Q&A session afterwards. You need to work just as hard on the Q&A session as you do on your talk. Try and anticipate what the questions might be and prepare some good answers. If you can, practice and prepare and refne the answers to these questions with a trusted colleague. If you are speaking live at a venue, it can also help to get the event organisers to ask the frst question or two, especially if you agree in advance what they are going to ask.

Visualise a positive outcome

Use your entrepreneurial powers and visualise a positive speaking experience. Imagine the audience reacting positively, see them smiling, nodding and applauding and run that image through your head a few times before you begin to speak. If it is a live presentation, turn up at the venue early and greet the people who are attending as they come in. Then when you

are delivering your presentation, look for the smiling faces of those wishing you every success.

Navigating the Funding Maze: A Comprehensive Guide to Financing Your Startup

Launching a startup is an exhilarating journey flled with endless possibilities, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges—chief among them, securing the necessary funding to turn your vision into reality. From bootstrapping and crowdfunding to venture capital and angel investors, there are numerous funding options available to aspiring entrepreneurs. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the various avenues for fnancing your startup and provide practical insights to help you navigate the funding maze.

Bootstrapping:

Bootstrapping, or self-funding, involves using your own resources to fnance your startup. While bootstrapping requires signifcant personal investment and entails fnancial risk, it ofers unparalleled autonomy and control over your business. Consider leveraging your savings, personal assets, or income from a day job to fund your startup in the early stages. Bootstrapping encourages frugality, resourcefulness, and a focus on generating revenue from day one.

Friends and Family:

Friends and family can be valuable sources of early-stage funding for your startup. Approach close acquaintances who believe in your vision and are willing to invest in your venture. When seeking funding from friends and family, clearly communicate your business plan, risks, and potential returns. Formalize the investment through legal agreements to avoid misunderstandings and preserve relationships. While funding from friends and family can provide a fnancial lifeline, it’s essential to approach these relationships with caution and transparency.

Crowdfunding:

Crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and GoFundMe ofer alternative avenues for raising capital from a large pool of individual backers. Crowdfunding allows entrepreneurs to showcase their products or ideas to a global audience and secure funding in exchange for rewards, pre-orders, or equity. Launching a successful crowdfunding campaign requires meticulous planning, compelling storytelling, and engaging marketing eforts. Be prepared to invest time and resources into building a strong online presence and rallying support for your campaign.

Angel Investors:

Angel investors are afuent individuals who provide early-stage capital to startups in exchange for equity ownership. Angel investors often possess industry expertise, valuable networks, and a willingness to mentor and support entrepreneurs. To attract angel investors, craft a compelling pitch deck that highlights your market opportunity, competitive advantage, and growth potential. Leverage networking events, angel investor groups, and online platforms to connect with potential investors and pitch your startup.

enture Capital:

Venture capital (VC) frms invest in startups with high growth potential in exchange for equity stakes. VC funding can provide signifcant capital injections and strategic guidance to fuel rapid expansion and scale. However, VC funding comes with stringent due diligence processes, high expectations for returns, and potential loss of control for founders. To attract venture capital, demonstrate a scalable business model, a large addressable market, and a stellar management team. Prepare detailed fnancial projections, market analysis, and a compelling pitch to captivate investors’ interest.

Bank Loans and Lines of Credit:

Traditional bank loans and lines of credit ofer another avenue for fnancing your startup. Banks provide funding based on your creditworthiness, business plan, and collateral. While bank loans ofer relatively low-interest rates and long repayment terms, they often require personal guarantees and collateral, making them risky for entrepreneurs. Explore Small Business Administration (SBA) loans, microloans, or community development fnancial institutions (CDFIs) for alternative lending options tailored to startups and small businesses.

Government Grants and Programs:

Government grants and programs provide non-dilutive funding to startups and small businesses in specifc industries or sectors. Research federal, state, and local government initiatives that ofer grants, tax incentives, or subsidies to support entrepreneurship and innovation. While government funding opportunities may be competitive and have stringent eligibility criteria, they can provide valuable resources and validation for your startup.

Accelerators and Incubators:

Startup accelerators and incubators ofer structured programs, mentorship, and seed funding to early-stage startups in exchange for equity. Accelerator programs typically last three to six months and culminate in a demo day where startups pitch to investors. Joining an accelerator or incubator can provide invaluable support, access to networks, and exposure to investors. Research reputable accelerator programs in your industry or region and apply to those aligned with your startup’s goals and values.

Corporate Partnerships and Strategic Alliances:

Partnering with established corporations or strategic allies can provide funding, resources, and market access for your startup. Explore opportunities for joint ventures, licensing agreements, or strategic partnerships with companies that share your vision and complement your oferings. Corporate partnerships can ofer fnancial support, distribution channels, and validation for your startup, accelerating growth and market penetration.

Revenue-Based Financing: Revenue-based fnancing (RBF) provides capital to startups in exchange for a percentage of future revenues. RBF investors receive periodic payments based on a fxed percentage of your startup’s revenue until a predetermined return multiple is reached. Unlike traditional equity fnancing, RBF does not require giving up equity or relinquishing control over your business. Explore RBF options from specialized funds, alternative lenders, or online platforms tailored to startups and small businesses.

In conclusion, funding your startup is a multifaceted endeavor that requires creativity, perseverance, and strategic thinking. By exploring a diverse range of funding options, leveraging your strengths and networks, and presenting a compelling case for investment, you can navigate the funding maze and position your startup for success in today’s dynamic entrepreneurial landscape.

How to Achieve A Positive Mindset

The fear and uncertainty caused by the pandemic has shaken even the most optimistic among us. However, even during the worst of times we have seen people innovate and thrive amongst the chaos - how do these high achievers maintain an unrivalled focus to achieve their goals? And, more importantly is this a skill we can all learn?

The answer is most certainly ‘yes’, according to Dario Bucceri, founder of the Sensemaker® Thirty Day Sprint Challenge. The Challenge was inspired by Dario’s own ambition to compete in the Comrade’s Ultra marathon, and the act of a fellow runner who helped him to fnish the race at a point when he was about to give up.

In this article, Dario uses his own experience and expertise to create a step-by-step guide to developing a positive mindset. A mindset that will not only increase your success in business but will improve your outlook in your personal life - creating a feeling of balance and positivity that should help everything to become easier.

My positive mindset has helped me to achieve so much in my life, when frst diagnosed with Parkinson’s I felt very depressed and found it hard to do anything. However, once I realised that with the right medication I could manage my condition I turned it into a positive. By training my body to be as healthy as it can be, I am not only continuing as I was before but I’m working harder and achieving even more success - including the fnish line of a few marathons!

Here are some of the steps that have worked for me and that I reinforce with all my clients:

Decide: A positive mindset is neither a feeling nor is it an event. Instead, it is the result of wilful decisions, the fruit of an approach to life that responds to incoming challenges with stubborn determination, sustained action, and a belief that you can infuence the outcome in some way.

Omit serendipity: Serendipitous events do happen, and people do win the lottery. The odds of either taking place are so small and difcult to predict that relying on one or the other to land good fortune is unwise. It is better to get going with what you have available than to sit back and wait for the Universe to do it for you. By doing this you give serendipity, whether it arrives or not, something with which to work.

Deconstruct: Activate the positive power of what you feel is blocking your success by instead identifying these blockers as signposts to breakthroughs. By deconstructing the challenge to micro problems that have combined to form the whole overcoming them is immediately more achievable. Develop and test solutions, weaving success into “knowledgescafolding” to conquer even the most signifcant obstacle.

Act: Congruency between what you say and what you do is critical. Action brings life to words, giving power to your decisions and making them signifcant. Actions fuel learning as we live in a state of trial, error, and adjustment, patiently building “platforms of understanding” that, in time, will lead

to the outcome we seek.

Think long term: Life takes time. Progress can be slow as we identify blockers, clarify causes, learn our lessons, and apply our learnings. It’s better to set a more extended timeframe and be surprised at better-than-expected results than to aim for a quick win and be disappointed.

Find a tribe: We succeed because of people, not despite of them. If we associate with individuals who live ethically, relate honourably, think positively, take responsibility, plan specifcally, execute consistently, and work efciently, the chances are good that we will raise our game to become like them. If the people with whom we associate are lazy, unethical, dishonourable, negative, irresponsible, vague, inconsistent, inefcient, and immoral - we will become like them too.

Daily practice to defne and achieve your goals

According to research by the University College of London, it takes 66 days to create a habit . By committing to building positive habits over time we can improve our outlook and productivity, here are a few that I credit with improving mine.

A product of the Sensemaker spirit is self-control. Preparing for and completing marathons is a wonderful place to develop this trait. That said, any exercise, at any level, that empowers you to test your limits, to practise a marathon mindset is, in my view going to be valuable. You certainly don’t need to be sporty or super healthy, I began with the NHS couch to 5km app when I struggled to jog for thirty seconds!

Treat other people the way you want to be treated. Tell the truth and talk straight. Listen more. Think in terms of outcomes and next steps. If a meeting starts without an agenda, end it. If a conversation becomes unnecessary call it. Make every word and action count. Don’t manipulate. Take time to listen. Empower others to progress. When resolving operational issues, always start with the process.

Something that I ask all my sprinters (clients taking on the Thirty Day Sprint Challenge) to do is to record a daily journal. Journalling is important because without a vision (a picture of a preferred future to aim for), people become like a rudderless ship on a journey that has no destination. Subject to the currents and winds, the ship drifts aimlessly and inevitably fnds its way to the rocks

Similarly, if you have a dream and its fulflment is delayed indefnitely, they can be negatively impacted too. The fnal piece of the puzzle is this – what I think about is where I will go.

Let us pull this all together. I can increase the probability of achieving a goal by having one (that seems obvious). I can increase the probability further by writing it down (creating a fxed expression of the goal) and can increase it again by thinking about it. The more I think about it, the more

probable it becomes that I will attain it.

Enter my journal. Once each day, I catch myself doing things right by recording my “Thankfuls”, those outcomes and events for which I am grateful. I remember my goals as I write them reminding myself of the tasks I committed to complete to move them forward as I write those too. I take time to think, to refect, to develop and enhance what I am doing.

I write my vision down so that I can run with it, and then I meditate on it often, giving action to my words, making them important, bringing them to pass.

By developing good habits, giving ourselves goals and the time to achieve them and reminding ourselves of these goals we are much more likely to achieve them.

When life gives you lemons

All this said, even armed with the most positive mindset, life does and will get in the way of your goals - what separates those who will succeed and those who will lose sight of their goals is the response.

Take control of these moments by fnding a quiet place and allow time to make sense of what is going on around you. High achievers know that with every mistake and failure you will learn something that makes you more resilient to face future challenges and more thankful and excited for the success that lies ahead.

How to Identify Your Business Niche

Felipe Polo, a digital entrepreneur, non-executive director and investor, shares his top fve ways to identify your niche and build your business for success.

Launching a business can be a daunting experience with developments often happening at 100mph, leaving little time to refect, learn and grow. It’s key then, that you spend a good amount of time working to identify your niche – what you can ofer, how it difers to what is already in the market, and how it will add value to your customers – before you launch, so that you can make sure your business decisions are driven by the right motivations. Especially in the early days when decisions need to be made at speed, your niche can help you focus your product or service, enabling you to ignore the inevitable distractions that have the potential to weaken your brand and your business.

I kick-started my professional life as a Software Developer in someone else’s company, but as my expertise grew and I climbed the career ladder, I quickly realised that under the broader industry umbrella of ‘technology’ I could carve out my specialism. Having co-founded and sold a software development company, I’m now in a position to support other business leaders and help them navigate their own niche.

Identify what you have to ofer

Deciding what you will build your business on usually evolves from pre-existing experience. I had a vast amount of experience in building diferent, software-based microservices for a broad range of clients. I could see how these diferent services helped to streamline operations, support culture and enhance productivity. Instead of continuing to build software for clients, I knew I had value to ofer in advising business owners on how technology can act as a business lever in mentoring teams to enable them to reach their full potential. My experience gives me a unique perspective and I work at the intersection between tech, teams and business, providing sound advice to businesses on digital transformation to drive results.

Research your potential market

Market research is crucial to honing a business niche as it helps you understand the level of need for your proposed service or product, and what customers may value most. By using market research to “niche down” you can often fnd an underrepresented and entirely unique specialism. For example, your skills may be in business consultancy – is there an underserved area of the market that you have the skills, passion and experience to support that can help you brand your business and niche down further?

Materialise your product(s) or service(s)

Now you know what you can sell to provide beneft and what your niche is, the next step is to extrapolate it into a concise service or product ofering. For me, the ability to distil your vision, service and its value into one sentence is crucial to take your ofering to market. If you can’t explain what you ofer in one sentence, your customers might struggle to understand the value. For example, I advise business boards on technological solutions that streamline operations and save on costs.

Segment your potential customers

Once you have a customer base and have enough data, segmentation is invaluable for those operating in niches as it enables you to align your products or services to specifc customer-types.

Segmentation also does not require industry specialists anymore either, as the right software will enable you to split and review your data set for product and proftability. This kind of software is an upfront cost, however, may increase your chances of success in the early days of launching your niche to market.

Be adaptable

Throughout the life cycle of any business, a leader has to be ready to adapt as processes unfold. Launching any business is a challenge with a great number of potential variables waiting to trip you up. Of course, there are large scale events like global pandemics, but smaller things like pricing and outsourcing requirements may change quickly too. An open mind and a willingness to pivot will help you overcome challenges, refecting an entrepreneurial culture of risk-taking that drives you forward.

Mastering the Art of Decision-Making: Practical Strategies for Entrepreneurs to Overcome Analysis Paralysis

In the fast-paced and ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship, decision-making is a critical skill that can make or break the success of a venture. However, the abundance of choices and the complexity of decisionmaking processes often lead entrepreneurs to fall victim to analysis paralysis—the inability to make a decision due to overthinking and indecision. Mastering the art of decisionmaking is therefore essential for entrepreneurs to navigate uncertainties and capitalize on opportunities efectively.

Practical Steps for Overcoming Analysis Paralysis:

Clarify Your Goals and Priorities: Before making any decision, take the time to clarify your goals and priorities. Understand the overarching vision for your venture and the specifc objectives you aim to achieve. Align each decision with your long-term goals and assess how it contributes to the overall success of your business. By establishing clear priorities, you can streamline your decision-making process and avoid getting bogged down by irrelevant considerations.

Gather Relevant Information: While it’s important to gather information before making a decision, be mindful of information overload. Focus on collecting relevant data and insights that directly impact the decision at hand. Identify key factors, risks, and opportunities associated with each option, and prioritize information that is actionable and timely. Avoid getting trapped in endless research and analysis, and instead, aim for a balance between thoroughness and efciency.

Set Decision-Making Criteria: Defne clear decision-making criteria to evaluate each option objectively. Consider factors such as feasibility, impact, cost, and alignment with your goals and values. Establish a framework or checklist to guide your evaluation process and ensure consistency across decisions. By setting transparent criteria, you can avoid subjective biases and make more informed and rational choices.

Consider Alternatives and Consequences: Explore multiple alternatives before making a decision, weighing the pros and cons of each option. Anticipate potential outcomes and consequences associated with diferent choices, considering both short-term and long-term implications. Conduct scenario analysis or decision trees to assess the risks and rewards of each alternative, and identify mitigation strategies for potential pitfalls. By considering a range of possibilities, you can make more robust and resilient decisions.

Trust Your Intuition and Gut Instincts: While data and analysis are important, don’t discount the value of intuition and gut instincts in decision-making. Tap into your inner wisdom and intuition to supplement rational analysis and provide valuable insights. Trust your instincts when faced with uncertainty or ambiguity, but also be mindful of biases and cognitive traps

that may cloud your judgment. Cultivate self-awareness and mindfulness to discern between intuition and impulse, and use both to inform your decisions efectively.

Set Decision Deadlines and Take Action: Avoid procrastination and indecision by setting clear decision deadlines for yourself. Give yourself a reasonable timeframe to gather information, evaluate options, and make a choice. Be decisive and commit to your decisions once they are made, avoiding secondguessing or over-analyzing. Embrace a bias towards action and experimentation, recognizing that imperfect decisions made with conviction are often better than no decision at all. Trust in your ability to course-correct and adapt as needed, and be prepared to learn from both successes and failures along the way.

Seek Feedback and Learn from Experience: After making a decision, solicit feedback from trusted advisors, mentors, or colleagues to gain diferent perspectives and insights. Refect on the outcomes of your decisions, identifying lessons learned and areas for improvement. Embrace a growth mindset that views each decision as an opportunity for learning and development. Continuously refne your decision-making process based on feedback and experience, honing your skills and judgment over time.

In conclusion, mastering the art of decision-making is a crucial skill for entrepreneurs to thrive in the dynamic and uncertain world of entrepreneurship. By adopting practical strategies and leveraging both rational analysis and intuitive insights, entrepreneurs can overcome analysis paralysis, seize opportunities, and navigate challenges with confdence and clarity.

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, success is often attributed not just to talent or luck, but also to a less tangible quality: grit. Grit, defned as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, has emerged as a key determinant of entrepreneurial success. While talent and intelligence certainly play a role, it is grit—the ability to persist in the face of challenges and setbacks—that separates those who thrive from those who falter.

Originating from the research of psychologist Angela Duckworth, grit has been heralded as a critical factor in achieving goals across various domains, including entrepreneurship. Duckworth defnes grit as the combination of passion and perseverance over the long term. In the context of entrepreneurship, this means having a clear vision of your goals and the determination to pursue them relentlessly, despite obstacles and setbacks along the way.

Practical Steps for Cultivating Grit:

Defne Your Purpose and Vision: Clarify your purpose and long-term vision for your entrepreneurial endeavors. Identify what drives you and what you are passionate about. Having a clear sense of purpose provides the fuel for perseverance during challenging times. Ensure that your goals align with your values and aspirations, making them personally meaningful and motivating. Regularly review and adjust your goals as needed to stay aligned with your evolving vision.

Develop Resilience in the Face of Failure: Embrace failure as a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey. Recognize that setbacks and obstacles are inevitable, but they do not defne your ultimate success. Cultivate resilience by reframing failure as an opportunity for growth and learning. Learn from setbacks, adapt your strategies, and persevere in the pursuit of your goals. Practice self-compassion and positive selftalk, nurturing your confdence and belief in your ability to overcome challenges.

Maintain Consistent Efort and Discipline: Success in entrepreneurship requires sustained efort and discipline over the long term. Stay committed to your goals, even when progress feels slow or obstacles seem insurmountable. Cultivate habits of consistency and perseverance, showing up each day and putting in the work necessary to achieve your objectives. Create a structured routine and prioritize tasks based on their importance and impact on your long-term goals.

Seek Support and Mentorship: Surround yourself with a supportive network of peers, mentors, and advisors who can ofer guidance, encouragement, and perspective during challenging times. Learn from the experiences of others who have demonstrated grit and achieved success in their own entrepreneurial pursuits. Draw inspiration and motivation from their stories of perseverance and triumph. Actively seek out mentorship opportunities and build relationships with individuals who can provide valuable insights and support along your entrepreneurial journey.

Embrace Growth Mindset Principles: Adopt a growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Cultivate a belief in your ability to develop skills and overcome obstacles through efort and practice. Embrace a mindset of continual improvement and resilience, recognizing that setbacks are temporary and can be overcome with persistence and determination. Challenge limiting beliefs and negative self-talk, replacing them with empowering thoughts and afrmations. Cultivate a sense of curiosity and openness to new experiences, embracing challenges as opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Celebrate Small Wins and Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress along the way. Celebrate small wins and milestones, recognizing the efort and perseverance required to achieve them. Use these moments of celebration to reinforce your commitment to your goals and to fuel your motivation for continued progress. Keep a journal or log of your achievements, refecting on how far you’ve come and the obstacles you’ve overcome. Share your successes with your support network, celebrating together and reinforcing your sense of community and connection.

In conclusion, grit is not just a desirable trait—it is a fundamental characteristic of successful entrepreneurs. Your 50s can be the perfect time to start a business

When you think about it, every day you take the corporate wage is a day you work for someone else’s interest, not your own. You could be investing your brainpower and energy in your baby, with the potential to be paid back tenfold. If you have a good business idea, surely it makes sense to invest in it?

But as many globally successful female founders show us, it can take a while to land your ideal role. The good news is that you can start your entrepreneurial journey at any age, and those who come to it later actually stand a good chance of success:

You know your business

Those years working for other people have built up your industry knowledge and product expertise. You can fgure out the things that cause you and your customers pain and make the job hard – and create a business designed to fx them.

To reduce the up-front hurdle, a low-cost, limited scale solution that you take to a few people can help test the water. Importantly, it can get you in front of people talking about the issues you want a voice on, in a low-risk way for both you and your clients.

Age equals credibility

The workplace is notoriously ageist, but as an entrepreneur you can turn it to your advantage to reset your mindset and focus on the positives of being older. Not the least of which is the credibility that comes with experience

A specifc beneft of a longer career is that as an older entrepreneur you have a lot of experience of diferent places, companies and events, so you can more easily fnd a point of commonality with the person you are talking to. A personal connection is a great way in, so maybe you went to the same conference ten years ago? The longer you have been in business, the easier it is to fnd these connections.

Use your resources

Many older entrepreneurs can leverage their contacts network, and if you are setting up in a ‘nearby’ professional feld then many of your contacts could probably help you.

However, it’s important to try and fgure out how people can help out without it being about money: an introduction perhaps, or maybe capability in their business. You can often fnd other entrepreneurs will assist as long as you’re willing to return the favour. Most people work on the basis of what comes around goes around.

Regarding fnance, generally you should avoid giving away any kind of equity stake in the early stages. You don’t know what the value of your business is this early in its lifecycle and you will probably regret it later.

The main reason to bring in long-term partners is to access something you can’t fnd anywhere else and is intrinsic to growing your business. Instead, outsourcing can be your best friend, particularly in the early stage. If it works, you can bring that function into the business later, and if it’s a disaster you don’t lose anything.

Use your skills

Older entrepreneurs often have negotiation experience, having learned the value of money, so will know how to get best value, when to negotiate and when to walk away at those vital early days of getting a business of the ground.

Someone who has worked in a company for a long time also has good workplace social skills; listening skills, a mindset of collaboration and a positive attitude to advice from others are characteristic of an older entrepreneur. Some younger entrepreneurs, on the other hand, think they are right about everything from the of. A risky assumption.

Setting up a small business has many pitfalls, so it’s great to go into it with a willingness to listen and take advice that your younger self might not have done.

Don’t leave it too late

Factor into your plans that it will probably take at least six or seven years – probably ten – to get a business really going. If you are looking to set up a business that will fund your retirement in your mid-60s, you need to think about starting it in your mid-50s.

Starting a new company is a lot about having the mental appetite, but the 50s is the new 40s: you’re still energetic, healthy and full of new ideas. Those who get booted out of big corporates often fnd the last few years in the business are miserable and they get side-lined. So, don’t leave defated; instead leave on your own terms, when you are still feeling good about yourself.

And remember, in your own business your age is irrelevant. You won’t face the frustration of less experienced people getting promoted just because they ft the target management profle.

Get the right tools – and the right people

Some aspects of going solo are like a cold shower. For us

“oldies” it can be a steep learning curve to get on board with all the software tools out there that make the task more efcient. Not to mention the sheer amount of time you spend at your computer.

The entrepreneur’s essential role is co-ordination and there’s some fantastic software to help manage a live project such as Slack and Monday.com. Especially now, with everyone WFH, it’s important to get everyone connected to you and your team at a click of your button.

Equally, sales and marketing have gone digital. You have to work out how to navigate this strange world of views, clicks and conversions, whatever your business. My solution: hire a whiz kid to do this for you, but don’t neglect it. No marketing, no business. That’s the simple truth.

Also, see how much time you’re spending on low-value admin and think about the things that only you can do and what are the things other people can do for you. A virtual (or real) PA can help to police you and assist with things that take up your

valuable time. Good ones will help design their own role – to make sure you do the things only you can do.

And fnally, your sudden loss of status can be strange. No one phones you anymore and you’re not (yet) of much interest to sales people. Now you have to win friends and infuence people from your personality alone, not your corporate job title. But at least such friends are ‘real’ – they respond to you and not your business card.

For me, running my own business was the start of many genuine new personal friendships as well as fnding the freedom and reward that working for someone else never would.

How to get a book published and monetise followers

entrepreneurs developing your presence on social media and building your following is an important step to your marketing and brand development.

However, making entertaining or informative content people want to come back to over and over again is time consuming.

One area in which you can develop, and maintain control over, your business and personal brand is by publishing a book and ofering content and of-line experiences that sit alongside it.

Here are my fve top tips for getting a book published and monetising your followers.

1. Write – keeping true to who you are

Publishing a book gives you the opportunity to control the narrative so you can keep your work true to who you are. But you’ll need to fnd a publisher who shares your vision or publish the book yourself.

Finding a publisher is much easier said than done. The likelihood is that you’ve built your following by ofering your audience something that mainstream popular culture has missed. Traditional publishing is designed around maximising the chances of producing bestsellers, which means they look back into the past to try to emulate something that has already been done. It breeds a kind of unconscious conformity, which is not usually a place suited to the wild creative spirit that exists online.

Publishing the book yourself might then seem the best route to go – the time it takes to tout your book around the publishers could be better spent getting on with it yourself, and maintaining control of your work. However, publishing a book costs a lot of money.

2. Crowdfund your book

The obvious solution to this problem is to crowdfund your book. By crowdfunding your book, you will retain complete creative control over your work. You can produce something you care about, which in turn will appeal to your followers.

Traditional publishing is also limited by the public expectation of what a book should cost – typically up to £10 for a paperback and £20 for a hardback. However, by crowdfunding your book, you can sell additional experiences and merchandise around it. For example, video games infuencer, Dan Hardcastle, raised over £300k for his book, Fuck Yeah, Video Games, on Unbound.

What’s interesting is that 80 per cent of the money he raised came from non-traditional book sales, unique experiences

and greater access to Dan such as signed copies, exclusive illustrations and personalised videos. This is nearly £250k in revenue that he might not have received if he’d simply published through a traditional publisher. Such is the power a crowdfunded book can bring to an infuencer.

3. Write something your followers want to read about

Writing a book for your followers sounds simple, but what should it be about? Only you know the answer to that. The key is to be as authentic as you can. Don’t try and write what you think someone else wants to read. Or even what you think will sell. Write the book you care most about and tell your audience what that is. They will back you if they believe this is core to who you are.

At Unbound, we’ve developed a machine learning algorithm that helps us to predict, with a high degree of accuracy, how much a book is likely to raise before an author crowdfunds it. By using data such as the size of the author’s following and the topic of the book, we can predict with around 80 per cent accuracy precisely how much a book will raise within 90 days of accepting pledges / pre-orders.

However, you don’t need to have a degree in data science to decide what to write about. You’ve got plenty of followers, so run a poll. Crowdsource your book idea and they’re more likely to buy it.

4. Be creative with rewards

There’s a fairly simple rule to follow when ofering rewards to followers: the more creative the ofering, the greater the value. And make sure what you ofer is authentic to who you are and what you do.

Never has this been so aptly demonstrated than with popular YouTube comedian, Stuart Ashen, when he ofered a ‘box of mystery tat’ as part of his crowdfunding campaign for his book Attack of the Flickering Skeletons. He sold three boxes of junk at £250 each. But of course, it wasn’t really ‘junk’. Each box was a hilarious collection of unique things Stuart’s fans would recognise and value because they love what he does and they trusted him to deliver something suitably extraordinary.

5. Engage your most passionate fans

Within any given audience, you’re bound to have a select few avid supporters who will pay a signifcant premium for exclusive access to you or your ideas. This is a fact traditional publishing simply cannot capitalise on. However, the digital economy has created untold new opportunities for authors to engage with their most passionate fans.

Dan Hardcastle created a reward level at £2,500 for Fuck Yeah, Video Games, which allowed a supporter to choose

the video game for an entire chapter of his book. This was clearly only targeted towards the superfan. In some respects it didn’t even matter if someone bought it – it mainly served to demonstrate the depths of his accessibility and creativity, and to act as something that grabbed the attention of his followers. Dr. Safa Al-Naher and Serene Dental Beautiful Smile With Invisalign

Dr Safa Al-Naher is the director and principal dentist of Serene by Dr Safa Dental and Facial Aesthetics.

A healthy smile is a signifer for youthfulness, and people who smile more are perceived as being younger. In fact, research has shown that a better smile can make people look at least fve years younger. One simple way to look younger is by broadening your smile:

“As we age, our teeth keep moving and jaw bones change in shape and density. This may create an uneven and narrower smile”, explains Dr Safa. “A broad smile is very youthful, while a narrow smile, when predominantly the front teeth are visible, can be very ageing. By 40-50, our lower face proportion starts changing. Our upper lip starts pushing down and covering the teeth and the side and back teeth are pushed inwards. When you smile, the corners of your mouth look like black holes, because the teeth that are there can’t be seen.”

Dentists call this scenario “narrow buccal corridors”. “Adding more volume and structure to the mouth is key to creating a broader smile”, says Dr Safa. “Tooth straightening, such as Invisalign, can add more structure and visibility to your smile, making it more even and eye-pleasing. Your smile will become more symmetrical, and will in turn provide more symmetry to your face, which is considered to be more youthful.”

Invisalign ofers teeth straightening using virtually invisible aligners, which can achieve results in as little as three months.

Excitingly, the treatment starts with highly accurate digital scanning to show you what your teeth could look like once aligned. This is used to create a comprehensive digital plan by expert dentists, and regular check-ups to ensure the treatment is on track and doesn’t need altering. Some of these can be conducted virtually cutting down the need to visit the practice.

Invisalign treatment can treat most malocclusions (misalignments of the teeth) and according to clinical studies are as efective as metal braces in even the more complex tooth straightening issues – but without any of the downsides. They provide a covert way of straightening the teeth with removable, transparent ‘aligners’ which are worn over the teeth and provide a wire free alternative to traditional braces.

I advise my patients how frequently to change their aligners to the next set - each designed to move the teeth incrementally to the next stage of

alignment. Providing they wear them for the prescribed 22 hours a day/ night, it is possible to achieve a new smile in as little as three months. The aligners are removed to eat and drink which means that treatment does not impede on an active social life (or love life)!

Serene by Dr Safa can be found at Number 56 Knightsbridge, ofering a blend of innovative dental and facial aesthetics. Dr Safa ofers an advanced level of treatment; her comprehensive talents in oral health, aesthetics (both facial and dental) and skincare speak volumes for her high level of expertise, making her both sought after and respected.

EMERALD LASER ™ at Remedi London

Innovative EMERALD LASER™ Paves the Way for Non-Invasive Fat Reduction

In a signifcant leap forward for non-surgical body contouring, the EMERALD LASER™ system is setting new standards in aesthetic medicine. This revolutionary treatment promises to diminish fat cells and improve the skin’s appearance without the need for invasive procedures.

Harnessing the power of non-thermal laser technology, the EMERALD LASER™ operates via a sophisticated electromagnetic energy transfer mechanism. This process not only reduces fat deposits by encouraging cells to release their lipid content naturally but also promotes collagen restructuring, thereby enhancing the skin’s texture and reducing the prominence of cellulite.

Contrary to conventional methods that may compromise cell integrity, this laser technology meticulously respects the structural sanctity of the fat cells. “The treatment instigates a photochemical response that gently coaxes fat cells to surrender their contents, which are then processed and eliminated by the body’s own lymphatic system,” explains Dr. Nima, the esteemed aesthetic practitioner at the helm of Remedi London.

Remarkably pain-free and devoid of any reported side efects, the EMERALD LASER™ stands out for its ability to maintain the delicate balance of the endocrine functions whilst facilitating fat removal. It achieves this through the creation of transient pores in the fat cell membranes, allowing the escape of fat without cell destruction.

Ofering a comprehensive full-body fat loss solution, the laser targets and diminishes stubborn fat deposits with precision. It has also earned the distinction of being the only laser technology approved by the FDA for overall body circumference reduction, suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those with a BMI of up to 40.

Situated in the heart of Embassy Gardens, London, Remedi London and Dr. Nima’s team ofer tailored sessions starting from £250. A course of ten sessions is competitively priced at £2000, making this cutting-edge treatment accessible to those seeking efective fat reduction and skin rejuvenation.

The Maserati MCXtrema, the Trident’s formidable 730-horsepower ‘beast’, has returned to its natural habitat: the track. Currently undergoing rigorous testing until late April, it aims for the frst model delivery scheduled for late summer 2024.

The MCXtrema, a non-road-homologated race car produced in a limited run of 62 units, stands as a testament to breaking moulds and forging new paradigms. Exemplifying the quintessence of Maserati DNA and the extraordinary performance synonymous with the 100% Italian brand, the MCXtrema is now undergoing a series of essential tests on the racing circuit to gather crucial data for fnal adjustments. This exclusive creation by Trident represents one of the boldest strides in the brand’s development, building upon the foundation laid by the Maserati MC20 super sports car, from which it draws inspiration.

In February, the MCXtrema made its ofcial debut at the Autodromo Varano de’ Melegari (Parma), where Maserati’s chief test driver, Andrea Bertolini, piloted the vehicle. Bertolini, a celebrated fgure in the GT class with four world titles aboard the illustrious MC12, had been involved in the MCXtrema’s development from its inception, refning its dynamics through sophisticated simulations. The initial shakedown in February and subsequent milestones aimed to fne-tune its performance have provided the ideal backdrop to unleash the full potency of its 730-horsepower (540-kW) 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, an evolution of the Maserati Nettuno engine pushed to the next level.

Leveraging the latest and most advanced technologies available to Mase-

rati, including the cutting-edge tools in the Maserati dynamic simulator and the expertise of the Powertrain Calibration team, the MCXtrema epitomises precision engineering and innovation. Months of virtual simulations, coupled with extensive real-world testing, have resulted in a car that represents the pinnacle of automotive engineering and aerodynamic efciency tailored for various track confgurations.

In the words of Andrea Bertolini, Maserati’s Chief Test Driver:

“Taking a new car to the track always results in a special, unique feeling, as is the case for the MCXtrema. A wonderful creation made to devour the asphalt and trip through the curves, a true gem of mechanics and aerodynamics, perfect for balance and handling. For months, we worked together with a team of highly skilled and passionate people, waiting for the moment we could bring the fnished object to its natural habitat, after putting it through its virtual paces in sophisticated simulations. What makes this car great is outstanding teamwork, resulting in a sports car of the future. With MCXtrema, we have raised the bar of development even further, working with the track in sight and always bearing in mind the needs of the Maserati customer, who remains the focus of our work and to whom this car is dedicated. The interior has been designed around the driver; we developed a cockpit as a cross between a fghter and a Formula 1 single-seater. MCXtrema is an evolution of the MC20 without type approval for the road: for the Trident’s super sports car par excellence, we had already worked obsessively on its handling and overall architecture, to achieve this ultimate, extreme, and exhilarating version. MCXtrema is a thrill to drive, unlike any other car”. MCXlusiva Customisation Programme
