TIME IS PRECIOUS With over 200 business support and finance providers, the North East Growth Hub can help you find the guidance you need to grow your business. Fast. Visit northeastgrowthhub.co.uk to get started.

START UP. SCALE UP. SHAKE UP.

Welcome Welcome to the Entrepreneurs’ Forum spring conference for what’s sure to be an inspirational day for North East entrepreneurs.

Nigel Mills, chairman

Alongside 300 of the region’s most ambitious entrepreneurs, we’re thrilled to also welcome the national ScaleUp Institute’s board of directors. Like the Forum, the ScaleUp Institute is striving to make the UK the best place in the world to grow a business and we’re delighted they’ve decided to join us for the day. The ScaleUp Institute was set-up to help businesses overcome the key barriers of high-growth; identified by today’s first speaker Sherry Coutu in The ScaleUp Report as:

Leadership capability

Skills shortages

Access to new customers and markets

Now, more than ever, our future economic success and well-being is dependent upon being able to create a world-leading environment in which companies can thrive, grow and prosper; overcoming these obstacles and contributing positive impact for generations to come. The Entrepreneurs’ Forum brings together entrepreneurs to help them make their businesses stronger; and to help make the North East stronger. It’s a network where entrepreneurs share experience in the interests of the greater good. In business, no one can do it all on their own and by embracing the ever-increasing interconnectedness of our region, we can improve the resilience and likelihood of success for our companies. There may be many challenges on the horizon, with the economic uncertainty of Brexit, an impending General Election on 8th June and numerous international and political factors all at play, but as always the best way for entrepreneurs to predict the future is to create it ourselves. The North East is in a strong position to generate jobs and prosperity right now and it falls on us, the business owners, to capitalise on the new opportunities that present themselves and tackle the challenges that arise head-on.

Finding the right combination of finance

Navigating infrastructure and red tape

Whether ‘Brexit-proofing’ our operations or looking at new ways of working in the most basic sense, networking is unquestioningly one of the best ways to find new customers and routes to market, but it can add so much more. In the audience today we have entrepreneurs, educators, corporate companies, policy makers, business support providers, financers and even the media. It’s everyone you need to create a successful scale-up eco-system. I challenge you to listen to our speakers and identify and introduce yourself to the exhibitors and people in the room who can help you to overcome your own barriers to growth. The North East is a region united by more than just geography and while the short-term may be challenging, we need to come together to help each other because together we are stronger. TOGETHER WE CAN TAKE ON THE WORLD! Enjoy your day,

Nigel Mills

Entrepreneurs’ Forum chairman

Simon Woodroffe OBE YO! Group @woodroffe_simon Simon is the creator of YO! Sushi and he was an original Dragon in the first series of BBC’s Dragons’ Den. His early career was spent on the road with the likes of Rod Stewart and The Moody Blues before becoming a stage designer. After a spell in television, he conceived and launched YO! Sushi in 1997, a conveyor belt sushi bar featuring call buttons, robot drinks trolleys, Japanese TV, self-heating plates and other such novelties. In 2003, Simon sold his controlling interest in YO! Sushi in a £10m deal, backed by private equity firm Primary Capital, but initially kept a 22% stake. Simon received an OBE in 2006 and along with Gerard Greene went on to create YOTEL, the world’s most radical hotel. A 669 room YOTEL opened in central New York in summer 2011. In 2017 a 600 room YOTEL opens in Singapore’s Orchard Road with further openings planned for San Francisco & Boston in 2017, and Miami, London, Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Dubai Business Bay in 2018.
