JANUARY

CHAIRMAN’S DINNER with Gerald Ratner Thursday, 17th January 6pm - 11pm Jesmond Dene House, Newcastle.

£99 +VAT (for entrepreneur members only)

Get your new year off to an inspirational start by coming along to our annual Chairman’s Dinner at Jesmond Dene House, along with our very special guest, Gerald Ratner.

Gerald’s fall from grace was one of the most spectacular ever seen, with the consequences of his joke ultimately forcing his resignation from the business he’d spent years building.

Gerald took over his family’s business The Ratner Group - in the mid ‘80s and transformed it into the world’s largest jewellery retailer. By 1990 he’d taken the company public and owned 2,500 stores with sales of over £1.2bn and profits in excess of £120m.

In 2003, Gerald launched a new venture, geraldonline.com. The specialist diamond retailer sells jewellery, watches and hallmarked gold and silver through a secure site. It has formed alliances with a number of partners and now trades in India and is the largest of its kind in Britain.

What happened next has been voted the worst business mistake of all time. In 1991 everything changed when Gerald gave a speech at the Royal Albert Hall and mocked his own products.

Join us for an inspirational evening and the chance to hear in a humorous and erudite manner about the rollercoaster rise and fall and rise again of Gerald Ratner.

MEMBER LUNCH Social Event Friday, 25th January 12.30pm - 2pm Lola Jeans, Newcastle.

Pay on the Day (for all members)

Throughout the year we host a number of relaxed and informal get-togethers, bringing like-minded people together socially. Come along and join fellow entrepreneurs for a spot of lunch and the chance to catch up after the Christmas break. JONATHAN WARBURTON, WARBURTONS Member Event Wednesday, 20th February 4.30pm - 7pm Brewin Dolphin, Newcastle.

FREE (for all members) As a fifth generation Warburton, Jonathan assumed control of the family business in 1991 - alongside his cousins Brett and Ross - before becoming chairman in 2001. During this time, he has overseen the company’s transition from a northern bakery to a household name brand, with growth of over 60%, turnover rising above £500m and the number of bakery and distribution sites growing by more than 40%. Perhaps surprisingly, Jonathan didn’t begin his career in the family business. Unilever was where he gained knowledge of the baking industry, as well as valuable sales and marketing experience that he would later use to develop Warburtons now iconic TV ad campaigns; featuring Sylvester Stallone, Peter Kay and The Muppets. Today, Jonathan is one of the UK’s most recognised business leaders and Warburtons employ over 4,500 people in a business that has people, quality, culture and traditional values at its heart.

When Toby took over, NBT faced one of the toughest challenges in its history. Their

customer markets were disappearing quickly and, in the face of recession, Toby chose to invest in research and development and to innovate his way out of trouble. It was a decision that transformed the business into a group comprising a number of, what have since become, industry leading and market changing brands. Today, NBT Group will soon pass the 60 staff mark and is set to achieve £15m turnover, with plans to double in the next three years. Come along to hear how, with the help of new technology, Toby has revolutionised his family business, while staying true to its legacy and values of providing exceptional products, delivered with standard-setting customer service.

Joining his father in the 1990’s, Phil expanded the business to sell interactive game cards, before taking charge and launching Intermedia Games in 1994 and then Tombola in 1999. Initially building free-to-play games of chance for clients such as eBay and lastminute.com, Tombola received its first remote gaming license in 2005 and has gone on to become Britain’s biggest bingo site and one of the fastest growing businesses in the UK. Last year, turnover reached almost £75m with 450 staff working across sites in Sunderland, Italy, Spain and Gibraltar. Seeing the difficulty paramedics have in trying to locate injured motorcyclists, she teamed up with co-founder Andrew Richardson to develop REALRIDER®. This must-have app for bikers automatically detects if a rider has had a crash and contacts the emergency services with their last known location and medical details. The first app to ever receive Home Office 999-app certification, REALRIDER® has 999 and 911 integration for UK and Canadian markets.
