Welcome

WELCOME INSPIRATIONAL STORIES. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS. LESSONS TO LIVE BY. WELCOME TO OUR 2018 AUTUMN CONFERENCE.

We’ve marked autumn with our Fortune Favours the Brave conference for more than ten years, focusing on how taking risks, staying true to oneself and being brave can bring huge benefits to your company. At some point, every one of us in the room today will have taken a risk, no matter how small or calculated. In truth, risk-taking is almost synonymous with entrepreneurship. From launching a business to preparing to scale, every decision we make is associated with a certain amount of risk. As entrepreneurs, we learn to take calculated risks, we analyse, we plan, and then we act. We ask, ‘what if?’. This year, our stellar line-up of speakers will share their own experience of risk-taking whilst reflecting on their individual paths into entrepreneurship, and the obstacles they have faced along the way, embodying one of the major themes of 2018’s Global Entrepreneurship Week. We’re reminded through these stories of the defining moments we make as entrepreneurs and of the exciting things that happen when you step out of your comfort zone.

CHAIRMAN Over 200 business owners and leaders are here today to join us in celebrating risk-takers, those who are bravely leading and growing dynamic businesses. I’d be delighted to hear your stories of risk and reward, either during today’s conference, or at a future event. After all, it is by sharing our experiences and expertise that we grow as entrepreneurs. And while today is undoubtedly a day of learning, live by the rule that unites our speakers: be brave and be bold. Step out of your comfort zone. Ask questions. Meet someone new. Dare to do something different. And remember, fortune favours the brave.

The Octopus Group ties together six distinct businesses: Octopus Investments, Octopus Healthcare, Octopus Energy, Octopus Ventures, Octopus Property and Octopus Labs. 12

DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY IN ONE SENTENCE: Octopus is a group of companies that invests in the people, ideas and industries that will help to change the world. WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? The successful launch of Octopus Energy which has taken us into a brand new sector and gives us an enormous opportunity to reach millions of new customers. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Learning how to delegate to others and giving them the autonomy and space to make things happen.

GREAT IDEAS

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR COMPANY IN FIVE YEARS? We want to go deeper into the sectors we are already in and strengthen our position as the leading investor in areas such as venture capital, renewables and healthcare infrastructure, as well as building the leading digital energy supply business. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER HAD? Always set budgets that you have no idea how to hit - it is only by stretching yourself in that way that you figure out new ways to grow the business. WHO, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH? Steve Jobs.

BOOKS TO READ WHO DO YOU LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION? People who over the years have overcome challenges to build very customer-centric businesses that have revolutionised their sectors, such as of Henry Ford, James Dyson and Michael Bloomberg.

BOB KEILLER AB15

Sponsored by

@Bob_Keiller

Bob does business properly. He treats people well, is open and honest, shows respect but holds staff accountable for delivery. Building businesses with these strong core values, and a positive culture, has defined his career which includes completing the management buyout of PSN from Halliburton in 2006, scaling and selling PSN to Wood Group in 2011, then leading Wood Group’s operations in more than 50 countries. Former chairman of the Entrepreneurial Exchange, Scottish Male Business Leader of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Grampian Industrialist of the Year, TEDx speaker, CBE holder and current chairman of Scottish Enterprise; the list of Bob’s achievements goes on and on.

DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY IN ONE SENTENCE: AB15 is all about helping people and organisations in the private, public and third sectors to grow. WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I love helping people to unlock their own potential or to release the latent potential in their teams. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Convincing people that stories and storytelling are crucial for organisational success. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR COMPANY IN FIVE YEARS? I am more ambitious for the organisations we help rather than my own company - I would like to be helping more of them to even greater success.

GREAT IDEAS

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER HAD? Never answer a question that tries to force you to summarise a broad and complex issue down to a single simple answer. WHO, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH? Dr Martin Luther King Jr. WHO DO YOU LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION? No one person - I consume lots of news, read books and articles and find gold nuggets in many places.

BEN HOUCHEN Mayor for Tees Valley

Supported by

@BenHouchen Elected as Mayor of the Tees Valley in May 2017, Ben is building a strong local economy that provides good quality jobs, underpinned by an even stronger private sector. To support business growth, Ben chairs the South Tees Development Corporation, which is redeveloping the former SSI steelworks site in Redcar. He is creating a multi-million pound Access to Finance Fund to provide capital investment for small and medium-sized businesses and is championing the area as a leader in innovative industrial technologies such as carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen trains. Ben is a qualified solicitor who has worked for two local firms specialising in commercial litigation and employment law. In 2016 Ben founded BLK Sports Holdings Limited - an international sportswear business, which supplies clothing to amateur and professional clubs. After delivering impressive growth and expansion, he has now stepped down from his role as CEO at BLK to dedicate all of his time to his Mayoral role.

WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? Being elected as Mayor. It is a huge honour to represent the area where I was born, grew up in and love. This might seem like a bit of a cliché coming from a politician, but nothing gives me so much pride WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Negotiating ownership of the former SSI Steel Works on the South Tees Development Corporation site. This is an enormously complex issue, both in terms of legal and commercial negotiations, but the public rightly has high expectations from this project, which adds to the pressure. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER HAD? Make a timeline, have a plan, but don’t be surprised when nothing goes as planned.

GREAT IDEAS

WHO, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH? Henry Bolckow, perhaps the most important industrialist in the history of Teesside and the first Mayor of Middlesbrough. Our region wouldn’t be the same without his life and work. WHO DO YOU LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION? My wife Rachel. She’s a genuine Teesside girl, who worked hard and studied modern languages at Oxford, and then came home to teach. She’s now an assistant head at the Conyers School, where we first met. Being married to a teacher I don’t have a lot of time for people who say they work short hours and get long holidays, the reality is very different to this.

MARK INGLIS Adventurer & Entrepreneur

Supported by

@MarkInglis Between losing his legs at 23 years old due to frostbite and then going on to be the first double amputee to have stood on the roof of the world, the summit of Mount Everest, Mark has carved out careers as a scientist, a world recognised winemaker, business innovator, acclaimed author, trekking guide and a leading international motivator. A silver medal from the 2000 Paralympics joins Mark’s existing medals from the world of alpine skiing, wine-making and his ONZM (the New Zealand Order of Merit) for services to the disabled. Over the last 10 years Mark has presented to hundreds of thousands of people across the world, inspiring them to embrace change and to develop the attitude to excel. It is this combination of achievement in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds - and his ability to interpret this to a wide range of people - that resulted in Mark being honoured to be both a delegate and panellist at the UN partnered 2009 Global Creative Leadership Summit in New York. He is also a regular presenter at TEDx events worldwide. The ultimate mix of experience and inspiration, Mark truly defines the saying: “attitude determines your altitude”. 18

WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? It would have to be Everest - that was a biggie. It’s a challenge for anyone but it’s on a new level for a double amputee, especially in the way I did it as a normal member of a climbing team, not a team to help me climb - as has happened with past attempts. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Getting my backside back down Everest. Climbing was tough but the descent was at a new level of commitment. Actually, the biggest challenge has always been trying to interpret the challenges and opportunities that life as a double amputee offers.

GREAT IDEAS

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER HAD? From my Dad: “Never, ever give up”. He didn’t, even when taking his last breath battling the cancer eating him. Live the words you preach. WHO, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH? Give me Mallory - I need to know! WHO DO YOU LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION? Every disabled and challenged person who just gets on with life without needing an award on Facebook to do it! I meet so many, so much worse off than me that battle life every day and make a great life - real inspiration. I’ve done hard stuff so get pretty critical, I am privileged to meet people that do even harder stuff called life.

TAMARA ROBERTS Ridgeview

Sponsored by

@RidgeviewWineUK

The second generation to lead the family business, Tamara has overseen Ridgeview’s growth in production of English sparkling wine to nearly 300,000 bottles each year, with plans to double this over the next three years. Nestled in the beautiful South Downs, Ridgeview has developed from a small family business to an internationally celebrated English sparkling wine enterprise, with the family still playing a fundamental role in its operations. The company has celebrated some amazing accomplishments in their relatively short history, from creating one of England’s only underground cellars to winning the trophy for ‘Best Sparkling Wine in the World’ at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2010. As of 2018, Ridgeview export to 12 countries around the world, including the USA, Scandinavia and Japan, and are proudly served at Buckingham Palace State Banquets and No.10 Downing Street.

20

DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY IN ONE SENTENCE: Creators of world-class English sparkling wines from grape to glass. WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? Taking Ridgeview and English sparkling wines to an international stage utilising our success at international wine competitions and comparative tastings to successfully launch into export markets. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Managing the financial side of the business and utilising the conventional financing offered by high street banks. The business does not ‘fit’ into standard ratios understood by such organisations, particularly stock which accounts for 50% of the assets in our balance sheet year on year. The long term nature of the production process of three years from harvest to sale means growth is extremely draining on working capital.

#NEENTREPRENEURS

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR COMPANY IN FIVE YEARS?

GREAT IDEAS

Production will be double the current levels of 300k bottles. We will be investing in retail and leisure facilities to drive direct sales up towards 20% of total sales. Domestic trade business will be very important and much growth will come via existing customers. Similarly, we will be looking to maximise the growth of export through our existing markets (USA, Scandinavia, Netherlands, Japan) before opening new markets. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER HAD? The importance of ‘active’ listening and communication within your business. Open plan and open dialogue is hugely important to our business albeit as we grow this has and will become more formalised as we need to specialise in areas within the business. WHO, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH? My father - he was a huge inspiration to me, I was very lucky to have him as a Dad and later as a business partner. WHO DO YOU LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION? My family - I expect them to tell me straight and they do. Mentors I have been fortunate to have in my life over the years from the CEO of one of our customers to our ex-bank manager, now non-exec director, and the many women I meet in business; most juggling careers and family with what appears on the surface to be of relative ease - we all know it is far from easy!
