F e a s T SEASONAL ISSUE
E D I T O R ’ S L E T T E R
As much as we need a beautiful roof over our heads, we also, thankfully, need to eat, a few times a day! This seasonal issue celebrates all the pleasures around feasting, something we certainly indulge in most at this time of year! Our first story gets us in close, as we explore the art of food photography and the greater impact a styled image can make on creating a deeper sense of the plate. The muse board has been brought to life with the help of Oriental Furniture, who kindly lent me some space in their showroom, to photograph a dining story showcasing a star of a serviette. I then restaurant hop with recommendations from food blogger @hungry_fifi as she shares some of her favourite dishes in establishments we love as much for their interiors. I am, however, most excited for our cover story created with blossoming baker Lerika Eigelaar, featuring a surprise guest appearance by a rather sly character … all is revealed in the ‘Garden of Envie’ feature! Finally, after a holiday of a lifetime in South Africa, which quite frankly is a foodie fairground, I share one of my highlights... a few days staying at the Boschendal Wine Estate. Their attention to food sourced and served feels almost as significant as the renowned wine it masters. To further assault your senses the interiors are wholeheartedly designed to enhance the experience, enveloping you within the authentic beauty of South Africa ’s Dutch Colonial past. They have highly accomplished creating an ethereal escape where one can feast in peace. And on that note I wish you all a delicious season of good food shared with loving family and friends, spent within beautiful homes!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS with love,

the art of
food imagery There is a particular skill to presenting and photographing food, which I believe lives in those who truly lust, love and live for food To authentically capture the essence of a dish or produce, there must be an intimate connection between the artist and the plate. There must also be a sense of purpose for the meaning to have an impact on the viewer To illustrate something we experience more closely through the sense of taste and smell via sight, has to have a depth beyond just an image Styling the plate therefore becomes paramount to creating the story to be conveyed. This is not solely in the plating up but also in considering the lighting and ‘set’ this will be placed on This feature shows my attempt at creating images that give that very food envie, the desire to reach in and attain the taste the image is teasing the viewer with

The fig is endlessly depicted in classical art. With its vibrant inner flesh, seductive in texture and flavour, I aimed to capture the sensuousness of the fruit. Edited to soften the background and edges, I achieved a painterly finish reminiscent of Dutch old master painting, and the chiaroscuro effect pulls the viewer in to the juicy, open folds

The jewel of eastern cuisine! This story celebrates this very aesthetic within the props considered. Rich pattern and textures frame the ruby red fruit and you could imagine this being served up to a grand Maharajah 6
Here I wanted to convey the sweet nature of this fruit! The Sugar Apple or Custard Apple, as it is also known, is a peculiar form. Its dragon like scaly skin hides a creamy, sweet flesh cocooning glossy black seeds. I added crushed brown sugar to further illustrate how sugary the fruit is and add texture to the frame 7

Who doesn’t want to get their knife and slice right into this dripping egg and witness the remaining yellow come oozing out all over the fresh and fragrant avocado base‌? Yet this image may create a love / loathe reaction depending on how runny one likes their eggs! For me, that is the magic of this frame. A breakfast classic which is irreverent to the trend. It is all about the ingredients: Egg and Avocado on toast with salt + pepper

Such simple yet essential condiments to every plate! Here I wanted to illustrate the yin & yang nature of this spice and mineral duo, so opted for a monochrome palette with lots of textural interest and metaphorical meaning. The agate slices hark to the earth born nature of salt as a mineral and the faux snakeskin relates to the spice of the pepper

I’m an avid decanter and love nothing more than unpacking the weekly shop into an array of jars, baskets and bowls. This ‘ceremony’ of food makes it all that more joyful when in the kitchen and considering the next feast This image full of earthy colour, tone and texture inspires the colour card. I have sourced a selection of bowls that relate to the natural elements found in ceramics, basketware, metallics and wood carving Using natural materials connects the vessel to the produce for a more wholesome energy, whilst also being eco friendly 12

With both a table and linen this pretty I had to find a unique way of making the most of each. I draped the napkins over the edge of the round table, creating a table mat and table cloth effect which didn’t hide the glorious African design and still shows off the table 15

This fine linen requires a chic backdrop and I was welcomed by Oriental Furniture to create the tablescape using their furniture and accessories. I pulled from their current collection a timeless mahogany round table with a subtle star inlay. The chairs are contemporary classics with button detail and charming brass capped front legs. For flair I added a brass pedestal bowl, filled with an amethyst candle holder. The table was then flanked by an elegant alabaster lamp and complimentary alabaster candle holders, poised on a mahogany buffet supporting a pair of towering gilded leaf pieces of art

Tis the season to be tempted! Talented baker Lerika Eigelaar made my whimsical vision come true with her apple based cakes, tarts and candy coated creations, to bring to life a table full of temptation. However, you might think twice if you spot the Bull Python lying in wait! 18

It’s no surprise that my favourite part of dining out is mostly spending time in a beautiful interior. Here are a few of my favourite design led restaurants in Bahrain, where under the expert guidance of food blogger @hungry_fifi, I sampled some of her favourite dishes. I am now full to the brim with fabulous food and dizzy with delight from these eye catching interiors 26

The balance of traditional design with a contemporary finish is realised successfully here. The layout is casual with options of a large convivial dining table, majlis inspired corners and everyday cafĂŠ style sitting. The highlight is the tremendous traditional wood fire bread oven (as seen overleaf) which is wrapped within the contemporary marble bar, illustrating this ease in merging the old with the new 28
The finishes throughout are key to making this work. Natural materials in the wood, marble, painted tiles and metallic finishes are timeless and it is simply the way they have been incorporated that gives the interior a current feel. Very much like the food itself! Served an array of traditional Arabic fare of meat Fatayers, Tahini chicken, Makdous and the house Fattoush with fresh baked bread, all familiar dishes fine tuned for the modern diner 29

If we know one thing about Frida Kahlo, it ’s that she was not afraid to be bold in life, love and art and Cantina Kahlo embraces this! Taking its colour cue from the rich and vibrant Mexican palette, teal shrouds the ceiling and walls which are flanked by bench seating in tropical fuchsia, lime green and aqua blues, creating a fiesta of the room itself. It is then further emboldened with a graphic 60’s style monochrome square floor. However, we notice that each area is restrained within its band which actually brings order to the kaleidoscope 32
With your eyes already dancing your taste buds are next in line for a flavour packed feast. My food guru @hungry_fifi highly recommended the Ceviche de Camaron and of course there were tacos, filled with fried Sea Bass and all the traditional Mexican seasonings. Last, and what we always make sure is a must, is choosing something (many things) off the Margarita menu! 33

One of the positives I take from our wired -in culture is the confidence to dine alone. With our additional appendage to keep us company, sitting solo no longer feels so uncomfortable. Nomad is my choice for these me time moments, where the dÊcor is elaborate and extensive. Every surface is accounted for, so when my eye does drift from the screen, I’m invited to wander the room in awe of all its intricacies 36
However, I am also obsessed with their whipped eggs on sourdough! My favourite time spent here is early mornings before the rush, with this plate of sunshine and a freshly squeezed orange juice, mimicking the young sun gently filtering through the fabric flags. Nomad emanates warmth and welcoming, whilst also being hip and forward thinking 37
