Materials for the Enviro Battery Experiment
Three water bottles Three strips of zinc or three nickels Three strips copper or three pennies Three pieces of Connecting wire Small LED light 300 ml of tap water 300 ml tap water-lemon juice solution (150 ml tap water, 150 ml lemon juice) 300 ml tap water-vinegar solution (150 ml tap water, 150 ml vinegar) Graduated Cylinder Small Cell phone Cell phone Charger
Procedures 1. Measure out 300 ml of tap water with the graduated cylinder for each water bottle. 2. Be sure that each bottle is filled with 300 ml of tap water. 3. Connect the LED light to a pair of zinc and copper plates or a penny and a nickel. 4. Make two more connection pairs with the remaining zinc and copper plates, making sure that you have alternating zinc and copper on each end.
5. Insert the zinc and copper plates into the water making sure that there is one zinc and one copper plate in each bottle and that they are not touching. (If they are allowed to touch the LED light may short circuit.) 6. Observe what happens and record your results. 7. Remove the copper and zinc plates carefully. 8. Completely dry the zinc and copper plates before beginning the next round of experiments. 9. Empty each water bottle and let them air dry before starting the next test. 10. Repeat steps 1-8 with each solution until all have tested.
