Preparation for the Water Workshop If possible, update the presentation and information booklet with information on local water restrictions available from your local water (the company which sends your water bill), and with information on water in your area, including names of local rivers and reservoirs. Daily water use activity notes This optional activity helps participants understand how much water they use and where they use it. To run it, write the following on a board and then invite participants to estimate their use per day. • How much water do you drink? • How much water do you use for food preparation and cooking? • How many minutes do you spend in the shower? Multiple shower time by 9 litres if you have a water efficient showerhead, and by 15 litres if you don’t. • How many times do you flush the toilet every day? Multiply this by 5 litres for full flush and by 3 litres for a half flush, and by 15 litres for an old single flush toilet. • How many loads of dishes do you wash? Multiply this by 20 litres. • How many loads of washing do you do per week? Multiply this by 80 litres, and then divide by 7 to get average per day. • How many minutes do you spend watering the garden each week? Multiply by 15 litres, then divide by 7 for the average per day. When they add these numbers up, participants will probably find that they use more than they imagined. Get them to compare this with water use in your area (see www.ourwater.vic.gov.au/saving/towns/household‐water‐consumption). Remind everyone that many water bills show the volume of water used each day and they can divide it by the number of people in their household to calculate their daily water use. Invite them to challenge themselves to cut their water use and think of ways they can do this. Materials Needed • PowerPoint presentation – on memory stick and in hard copy as a back up • Laptop computer with PowerPoint software installed, projector and screen (or light coloured wall) • Extension cord and power board or double adaptor • White board and markers • Camera and media consent forms (if you would like to take pictures of the workshop) • Tea/herbal tea/coffee/milk/sugar/biscuits • Raffle tickets and tub (if holding a raffle) • Three prizes (e.g. three bottles of garden friendly laundry detergent) – one prize for an activity and two prizes for raffle. • Embodied water instructions and answers (available online with this resource) • Embodied water cards – one set of cards for each group of 2‐4 participants (available online with this resource) • (Optional but recommended) Props such as a grey water diverter, grey water hose, garden friendly laundry detergent, flow restrictors, a low flow showerhead, mulch and local native plants. • Handouts from previous sessions for any new participants

Specific Items – allocate 1 per person • Pens • Water booklets, printed on recycled paper • Water Pledge sheets – these are in the booklets, but you may want to get participants to also record their pledges on a handout, so you can compile them • Things to give away to each participant – e.g. flow restrictors. • Flyers promoting the next workshop Other resources • Hard copies of fact sheets from www.environmentvictoria.org.au (e.g. rebates fact sheet) • Print outs of The Victorian Green Renters’ Guide, available from www.environmentvictoria.org.au/rentersguide • Details on your local water retailer’s free showerhead exchange program Disclaimer Environment Victoria provides the Eco‐Wise Action workshop package as a guide.
