MAKERSCOPES & LIT TLE BIG FINDS Makerscopes are a series of a 3D printed compound microscopes, made using disposable camera lenses, and intended to be cheap and accessible. Primarily targeted at schools to be built in class, the Makerscopes’ purpose is to teach practical skills of assembly and an experiential knowledge of how things work. Intended to be a sustainable platform, it was developed with users in mind through a series of school workshops and contact with the National Wildlife Trust. Feedback from children, teachers and other stakeholders was used to iterate the design.

Visual mock-ups of the App. During user testing, Flinto and Keynote were used to simulate transitions and navigation flows.

Disney Interactive

During a 12 month internship at the Walt Disney Company I supported UX and visual designers on a cross platform redesign of the new Disney Channel UK website. This involved initial concept sketches through to quality control and liaison with developers. I was lucky enough to work on a variety of properties including the new identity for Disney Movies, Monsters University and a bespoke micro site for Wreck-it-Ralph.

Example of one of the Disney Movies pages, I provided support for lead UX designers during esearch and testing.

One of my roles was converting the Wreck-it-Ralph micro site for tablet and mobile devices. I was also responsible for the look and feel of artwork and was involved in sites the visual design.

Left: The outcome of a short project developing a deck of award cards for online game ‘Agent Alert’. The brief was to emulate the existing Disney style.

Scout Rope: Future brands

The project was focussed on analysing the Scouts brand to discover what the core values of the organisation, predicting social and contextual issues in 2030, then using our findings to move the brand forward making them relevant in the future. The outcome was an tactile interface, taking on the form of a simple rope, it aims to encourage self-directed learning in young people, by teaching practical skills.

The Rope is an intuitive way to learn practical skills and encourages game design and self reliance amongst Scouts

People & Things

Co-designed resource to instigate free HCI (Human Computer Interaction) thinking in schools with flexible learning parameters and outputs. The resource has been trialled nation wide with mixed abilities, a variety of facilitators and extreme age groups. R&D: Dr Graham McAllister and Robert Phillips Illustration: Enya Williams

The design process; each character was hand draw, inked and then finished digitally.

The final card decks; featuring over 100 illustrations of People & Things, and an instruction sheet. Printed on 400gsm stock card.

Armadillo: light with moves

LED lighting design, exploring the use of smart materials as an alternative to motors and gears. I took the open brief as an opportunity to explore the possible interactions that could be used to control the device, and what material alternatives could be used. The shape of the shade was used to create playful interaction when changing the intensity of light output

Development sketches exploring form.

Render showing how the shape of the lamp changes during the course of an evening, acting as a subtle indication that time is passing

After extensive testing a working prototype was produced. The Shape memory alloy ‘Nitinol’ was used in opening and closing of the shade
