IN the FIRST PERSON LAGUNA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL & RESTORATION 66 By Tim Chambers, Auto Tech Teacher In March of 2012, I became aware of the Collectors Foundation (now Hagerty Education Program) and the work they do with awarding grants to schools, museums, etc. I contacted the Foundation and received the information I needed to obtain a grant. Working with Coastline Regional Occupational Program (ROP), I was able to secure a grant for $10,000 to restore and modify a 1966 Ford F100 Pickup which was donated to the program. It is titled “Restoration 66: Connecting Students with Cars, History, Family and Community.” We established the type of build (custom), the vendors we needed to get parts from and how we were to accomplish this build. I had the students research their family history and how the automobile played a part in their families’ lives. I think it surprised many students, the importance automobiles played in their family history. There were many great stories spanning multiple generations. Laguna Hills High School, located in Laguna Hills, California was opened in 1978. We are a small school with an average of 1700 students. We excel in academics and sports with many awards in both areas. I teach five classes, four ROP (regional occupation program) and one district class which is composed of freshmen. Our Auto 2 or Advanced Auto was responsible for most of the build. My program caters to students who either want to pursue a position in the automotive field or aren’t sure what they want to do and take my class to learn about cars. We teach all the automotive basics and articulate with two junior colleges, Saddleback and Golden West. These colleges have auto programs that allow students to further their automotive pathways and a future in industry. This is my 9th year teaching at LHHS. Prior to teaching, I spent the last 30 years working in industry. I got my start in

automotive and worked my way up to brake technician but was offered an apprenticeship to a tractor dealership. I loved my job and continued working on heavy equipment for various dealerships and independents. I have held many positions including service manager for three dealerships and two construction companies. I worked as a field service tech and also spent time on the floor. When I was 49 I was offered a job as an automotive teacher for Coastline ROP. I jumped at the opportunity. We began to strip the truck to get ready to paint and also secured a Ford 390 FE engine to replace the aging 352 CI engine. We rebuilt the engine completely – crankshaft, rods, valve job, etc. We had it blueprinted and installed an RV cam, high output ignition and four barrel carb. We outsourced the paint and upholstery. During the summer of 2013 we received the truck back from A-1 painted in a brilliant Porsche red and the upholsterer designed a special color scheme seat and headliner. By that time we had contacted a number of vendors and were overwhelmed by the generosity. Discounts, free parts and advice helped us immensely. Final assembly took us to May of 2015. The truck runs great and looks awesome! All the students involved over the three years did a fantastic job and I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of all of them. It was an experience they won’t forget, and neither will I. I want to thank the Hagerty Education Program and especially Diane Fitzgerald for allowing us to do this build. Diane was a major influence and we bounced a lot of ideas off each other We will be taking the truck to various car shows to spread the word about the Hagerty Education Program, Laguna Hills High School and Coastline ROP. We hope to apply for another grant soon and already have an exciting plan to incorporate the truck with the new build.

APPRENTICE UPDATE: RYAN LEVESQUE You read about Ryan Levesque, HEP’s first apprentice, in the Spring 2015 issue of Hagerty Classic Car magazine (page 62). Ryan is a 2014 graduate of HEP grant awardee Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Automotive Restoration Technology program in Williamsport, PA and a HEP-funded 12-month apprentice at Precision Motor Cars working under master craftsman Keith Flickinger in Allentown, PA. In August, Ryan got married and was relocated to Texas, where his wife is attending college. Ryan’s two AA degrees – one in business and the other in automotive restoration – and “under the hood” experience as an apprentice, got him noticed by Kip Motor Company shop manager Randy Bush, who reached out to HEP’s National Director as a reference for Ryan’s employment application. It feels like Ryan got the job on-the-spot at the Dallas, TX-based, British-car focused shop which has 18 employees – all deeply passionate about “antique cars” and their histories. Ryan is right at home and sends us these photos of him at the shop!

There’s plenty of work in the Kip Motor Company shop, including this 1955 Jaguar XK140.

SPOTLIGHT ON CAR CLUBS CAR CLUBS GIVE BACK TO HEP The Car Guys from Kansas City: Giving Back With Heart There is a car club thriving in one of the Heartland’s largest cities – the Car Guys of Kansas City. Founded in 2006 by car enthusiast Gary Krings, a financial advisor and Ferrari lover, the club has grown from 20 members to 320 under his leadership. Inspired to create a club that was more about enthusiasm for collecting than brand or model, Gary created the friendly car-guy group that has no dues, no officers and one rule: own a monthly meeting. Two other volunteers support Gary and the Club’s operations with program coordination and meeting registration. With twelve meetings a year, on the second Tuesday of each month and for Dutch lunch, meeting topics and locations vary by who is planning them. There is no newsletter and no website. Word-of-mouth drives the increasing membership and new members are welcomed at every meeting. “The cars are the common denominator that bring great people together in camaraderie,” says Gary when describing his appreciation for the club members, a strong and very active network of enthusiasts whom he mobilizes as volunteers for The Art of the Car each June and other local car events supporting local charities throughout the “car guy season”. At a special club dinner on March 25, 2015 that felt more like a banquet than a dinner, members and their friends recognized the good work of the HEP. “Now we’re coming together in meaningful ways to support the hobby and the efforts of the HEP with $3,000 in donations from the Car Guys of Kansas City!” declared Gary that night. “The funds we’ve so generously received from the Car Guys of Kansas City will be used to support scholarships at automotive restoration education programs around the US, including McPherson College in Kansas,” said Diane Fitzgerald, National Director of HEP, when thanking the members. “HEP raises money to give it away and we cannot do what we do without your support. LeMay – America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, WA is very serious about making sure that the next generation has everything it needs to be the next collectors, restorers, club members, shop owners and stewards of our American heritage. Tonight is very special, indeed, because of the Car Guys of Kansas City and your donations.”

AUTOMOTIVE RESTORATION IN CHICAGO: RISE & DRIVE HEP had a great “car guy” summer!! HEP spent time in Chicago, IL at Soldier Field with three McPherson College Auto Restoration students – Lance Butler, Travis Gleich and Andy Fabianski. Lance, a recent graduate, is the Collection Manager of a local collection and Travis is a paid intern in the same shop. About to begin his senior year at McPherson, Travis is a HEP scholarship awardee and HEP internship funding recipient. What do you get when you mix a 1963 Fiat 500 and four car guys? A lot of fun at Chicago’s Rise & Drive. “The best part for me – as National Director of the Hagerty Education Program at America’s Car Museum – is “seeing” the impact of our funding automotive restoration programs by watching Lance, Travis and Andy engaging in their industry and actively participate in the collector community. Each of them has benefited from HEP’s funding of McPherson.” Since 2006, HEP has awarded McPherson College more than $600,000 for scholarships, equipment, parts and paid internships “gap funding”.

CONNECTING the DOTS

MEET BUD McINTIRE, DIRECTOR of STUDENT SERVICES at GREAT LAKES BOAT BUILDING SCHOOL Grant Awardee Great Lakes Boat Building School (GLBBS) in Cedarville, MI has been on HEP’s radar screen since 2007, receiving scholarship and program funding every year since then, for full-time vocational courses in a variety of traditional boat building disciplines. HEP gets actively engaged with each awardee and their staff, making site visits, engaging in local enthusiast events and community activities, and following the educational and career paths of their students. Because of our relationship-cultivating, we discovered a shared interest in motorcycles with one of their school leaders. Turns out, he was about to retire. Bud McIntire retired from his role at GLBBS in May and relocated with his wife to North Carolina. To begin checking off items from his Bucket List, he rode his BMW motorcycle 2,890 miles one-way from North Carolina to Tacoma, WA to attend America’s Car Museum’s THE MEET Vintage Motorcycle Festival, where he spent three days with HEP’s Team, including newcomer Pam Dudley, Administrative Coordinator, all while participating in the Museum’s Concours event. Even though he didn’t win a prize in his class, he won our hearts with an offer to work with HEP as a volunteer Ambassador. He was

just elected to the National Board of Directors of the Traditional Small Craft Association, based in Mystic, CT, but he plans to share some of his retirement time with HEP, focusing on our outreach in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama!

SPOTLIGHT ON CAR CLUBS The Automotive Restoration Club of Sun City West, AZ HEP made a good friend in January when we spent 10-days in Arizona during Car Week. During our visit, we learned that automotive restoration is alive and well in the Phoenix, AZ area, largely because car enthusiast and networking- magician Herb Clark is doing everything he can to utilize the profound knowledge and skill sets of his neighbors, complement the goals of the local high schools and community colleges and take advantage of the goodwill of the area’s restoration shops. He and John Chaney founded The Automotive Restoration Club of Sun City West (ARCSCW) after learning of the educational needs of the community. Their outreach was immediate and the results overwhelming. In fact, after a short fundraising campaign to raise capital funding for a new building, they broke ground in March on an automotive restoration facility in the heart of their town! The facility will house each of the different restoration shops that dot a 5 miles radius, consolidating the club’s many shops. The club is especially proud of their fabrication shop but they do every aspect of restoration, from mechanicals to upholstery to preservation. Their shop will be open to local high schools and community colleges, filling curricular gaps with classes taught by former Detroit designers, mechanics and technicians. “The wealth of knowledge we have in our club is astounding,” Herb

reports about the 400 members. “The relationships we are cultivating with the schools in supporting their curriculum are the wave of the future of education. On top of that, we’re supporting the movement to teach the next generation of craftsmen and artisans so we can be sure our heritage is in good hands.” The grand opening of ARCSCW’s Restoration Shop is scheduled for January 2016 and HEP will be there! Join us...

EDITOR’S NOTE: In January, Herb Clark and Tom Jones planned 2-days of meetings for HEP to explore Phoenix area schools and restoration shops, meet with club members and visit their garages plus meet with teachers and students. Since January, we continue to be engaged with the teachers and students we met in January. Herb has done the same planning in St. Louis, MO and surrounding communities with meaningful visits to shops, schools and collections. Thank you, Herb!

SPOTLIGHT on INTERNS

NARROWING THE “EXPERIENCE GAP” with HEP Some us recall as we were about to graduate – whether high school/vocational school, junior college, community college or college – that exasperating and unexpected moment when told, by prospective future employers, that we needed more experience to be hired. How were you supposed to get more experience when you were just graduating?!! In today’s market, Automotive Restoration graduates across the country are experiencing the same thing. Shop owners are hiring people with 3-5 years experience. Now what? As we see it, narrowing the experience gap begins before graduation, with paid internships for program students, giving them direct experience in their field. The Hagerty Education Program at America’s Car Museum funds internships across the country, including at Pennsylvania College of Technology and McPherson College (Kansas), two of the many schools we support. Meet three of our 2015 summer interns!

VANESSA MATHURIN, LEBARON BONNEY COMPANY INTERN Growing up in Philadelphia, PA, Vanessa’s passion for collector cars and the hobby grew by watching TV shows – car shows. Her search for educational programs in restoration with an eye on upholstery connected her with the two-year Associates degree program at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA where she expects to graduate in 2016. Her appreciation for the art of upholstery has grown exponentially since starting the program, enhanced by her paid internship at LeBaron Bonney in Amesbury, MA. Working with master pattern-makers gave her a level of expertise she could get only in a shop. She is anxious to use her developing skills on school restoration projects and winning awards at regional shows, as she and her classmates have already done in Hershey and Charlotte. Recently elected as treasurer of the Penn College Classic Cruisers car club, Vanessa is poised for landing her dream job in her dream field. Pennsylvania College of Technology, featuring one of the oldest, continuously operating automotive programs in the nation, also has one of only a few college-level vintage vehicle restoration degree programs offered nationwide. Automotive Restoration Technology at Penn College students work on vehicles built between 1900 and 1975, including those from world-renowned museum collections. Their restoration efforts have earned a variety of awards. Penn College is a special mission affiliate of Penn State, committed to applied technology education.

Vanessa Mathurin will graduate Penn College with an Associate’s degree in Automotive Restoration. She wants to do it all, including custom upholstery which she is learning from the masters at LeBaron Bonney Company in Amesbury, MA.

SAVANA CROSS, HEP RESEARCH INTERN When asked the question recently “How do you know there are plenty of restoration jobs out there?” I approached schools and organizations across the US for their answers… which were not plentiful. So, HEP created and launched a multi-year market research plan. McPherson College senior, Savana Cross, an honors Business major, was the perfect fit for taking the lead on Phase One of the plan – researching, studying, interviewing program administrators and alumni and compiling data about automotive restoration & preservation educational programs in North America. Her connection with automotive restoration is the college’s Annual Motoring Festival that takes place each May. Savana worked closely with the organizers, the school’s C.A.R.S. Club (College Automotive Restoration Students), in supporting the fundraising event. The winning combination of her directed-research experience with HEP plus exposure to people in businesses shaping the automotive restoration industry were favorable additions to her job search tool belt. McPherson College located in central Kansas, is a four-year private liberal arts college. It is the only school in the country to offer a bachelor’s degree in automotive restoration technology. In addition to courses specific to auto restoration, students in this program take a variety of liberal arts classes that challenge them to use multiple learning styles to explore problems and find creative solutions. The campus community at McPherson College believes that student learning is enhanced through experiences. We are committed to providing excellent learning opportunities in and out of the classroom, such as internship experiences and experiences at industry events.

JASON PETERS, AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM COLLECTION MANAGEMENT INTERN A car guy through and through, Jason spent his youth working side-by-side his father and uncle in the garage. As a young enthusiast, he bought a 1969 Ford Galaxy and restored it to the point of being invited to exhibit his 45-year old beauty last year at the Art of the Concours Show in Kansas City. Surrounded by people who completely understand why cars are so interesting – at both McPherson College and America’s Car Museum – Jason learned everything he could, from Alfa to Zundapp, about restoration work and the industry with the goal of opening his own shop someday soon. Working in Collection Management at the Museum expanded his skills of car maintenance and knowledge of car provenance that will enable him to serve the collector community well in the coming years.

If you know an automotive and/or preservation program that might be a funding fit, let them know about our grant program. The grant application process is simple and user-friendly. Learn about it at www.hagertyeducationprogram.org and click on “Apply for Grant.” Application deadlines are: September 1, 2015, December 11, 2015 and April 15, 2016. Grant support is offered.
