What an amazing year! 2016 got off to a flying start with the commissioning of our fifth Howick machine – the only FRAMA 8800 in the UK. This significant investment in state-of-the-art machinery has resulted in the expansion of our product portfolio and substantial market growth. In April, we announced the acquisition of EOS Facades by prominent dry construction solutions company – Siniat, further accelerating our ambition to become the market leader in Steel Frame Systems (SFS). The Siniat deal has provided a valuable opportunity to combine EOS’ specialist knowledge with those of Siniat to create innovative solutions and industry-leading technical expertise. These developments have enabled EOS to supply the volumetric modular building sector as well as the floor cassette, high bay and continuous walling industries. Our product range now includes 200 and 250 mm deep sections in addition to our existing 150mm range, in gauge thicknesses from 1.2 to 2mm.

We have continued to build strong strategic alliances throughout the year and in 2017 look forward to providing our award winning products and services on pioneering projects across a broad spectrum of sectors.

Company News... FACTORY TOURS For the first time in our ten-year history, we opened our doors to host a series of informative CPD Factory Tours in September. The events proved to be a huge success attracting nearly 100 delegates across two days. The Tours, which were hosted alongside Siniat were attended by companies such as Sir Robert McAlpine, BAM, DLA Architecture, Wates and GF Tomlinson, to name a few. Developed for architects, specifiers, contractors and clients, our tours take delegates through our process from costing and design through to production and quality control procedures. Our technical team presented a CPD session covering a variety of topics relating to light steel frame technology plus examples of best practice applications and project profiles.

See What our Delegates Have to Say: Following our 2016 tours, our attendees had the following feedback: • 100% of delegates said that the Factory Tour changed their perception of EOS Facades

We are pleased to announce we will be running further tours in 2017. Tours will take place on 15 and 16 February 2017 and there are four sessions to choose from:

• 91% of delegates said that the Factory Tour had improved their knowledge of Light Gauge Steel Frame

15 FEBRUARY 2017 9.00am - 12.00pm

• 100% of delegates said that they would like to work with EOS Facades in the future

“Good to see a factory trying to add value by seeking to understand how building sites work , rather than expecting builders to adapt to what comes off the end of the production line.”

PROJECT PROFILES

SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH BUILDING, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

WINNER

A £58 million refurbishment & renovation of an iconic landmark in the heart of Cambridge – the building formerly known as the Arup Tower, is the result of a collaboration between the University of Cambridge & the Museum of Zoology. The Sir David Attenborough Building, as it is now known, reinvigorates this iconic building. EOS Facades were appointed by installers SCL to engineer and supply the steel framing system for this project totalling over 725m2.

The principal challenge in carrying out the refurbishment of such an iconic structure has been how to achieve this whilst preserving the architectural integrity of Sir Philip Dowson’s original design. Using our considerable expertise, we were able to provide value engineered solutions which were sympathetic to the sensitive architectural redevelopment. For the main exterior walls, a new cladding system was installed which required tightly co-ordinated placement of EOS studs with a large quantity of horizontal noggins as fixing points. This process was replicated for the narrower, more recessed walls. For the vitrine wall, oversailing SFS was installed to the existing internal staircore using bespoke bracketry. In addition to the main frame of the build, EOS also contributed to the buildings key focal points including the whale skeleton enclosure and the impressive ‘Living Wall’ feature. The ‘living wall’ was one of the most challenging aspects of this refurbishment. EOS value-engineered a 20 metre high steel framing system to support the heavy weight of the plants. Heavy duty bracketry together with SFS infill and vertically placed edge lattices provided the support required to achieve this structure. The lattice beams were pre-engineered offsite and delivered fully assembled, ready for installation. The key objective for EOS throughout this project was to supply light weight solutions which did not encroach on the vast internal spaces but that were still capable of supporting the architectural features as demonstrated with the ‘Living Wall’.

We operate across all sectors, delivering quality steel systems to the highest standard, on time, and within budget. Here is a snapshot of some of our latest work…

METROPOLITAN POLICE TRAINING CENTRE, HENDON Appointed by Prater on behalf of Mace, EOS Facades supplied a bespoke solution for this £50m scheme, encompassing two main blocks on an 11 acre site. Our technical team created a hybrid, pre-panelised system with adjustable windposts. By designing and manufacturing tailored panels with built-in windposts which could be temporarily fixed and then re-secured to the pre-assembled panels, the significant technical challenges were overcome. Large downstand beams were fixed with diagonal braces into soffits which were delivered to site ‘just in time’ for installation. Our strong working relationship with Prater ensured the project was delivered to the highest standard, to programme and within budget.

ST LUKES HOSPITAL Appointed by Taylor Hart, EOS Facades supplied the main frame and SFS infill to this £7.8m project. We were involved during the design stages to ensure the tight programme schedule was achieved. The steel main frame was hot rolled with concrete slabs and used general SFS infill from ground floor to second floor. EOS provided bespoke windpost details to accommodate large openings into areas where structural steel was tapering to form a roof slope. Brise soleil sun shading connected directly back to the SFS with additional steel to support the load. EOS pre-engineered our system offsite to reduce noise and speed up the onsite installation time which were major prerequisites for this construction.

PEMBURY CIRCUS, LONDON Appointed by Ardmore Construction, EOS Facades designed and value engineered a bespoke structural steel framing solution for this 2016 Offsite Award winning residential project. We delivered SFS infill for the concrete main frame with a facetted curved facade and design oversail details that allowed downstands to be formed underneath the protruding window sets. The need to provide additional support around the windows, combined with the offset nature of the window patterns meant support solutions had to meet the requirements specified in the architectural brief. EOS designed and engineered bespoke bracketry, details and windposts to facilitate the curved structure something which is traditionally difficult to achieve with a ‘linear’ framing system - delivering the project on time, on budget and up to sustainability standards.

TECHNICAL TALK DfMA the Catalyst for Innovation To ensure Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) is integrated at every opportunity during the design and development path, EOS Facades have devised some innovative processes to support and quantify design decisions. We design in a collaborative culture, using Building Information Modelling (BIM), underpinned by the digital technologies which unlock more efficient methods of creating and maintaining assets. The BIM elements are fed directly into our CAD/CAM solutions that control our advanced roll-forming technology and produce the light steel sections required for the optimised frame or cassette design. By transferring design information directly to our production plant we are able to manufacture to accuracies that exceed construction industry norms, optimising raw-material use, directly minimising waste and enabling repeat quality every time. Other unique aspects of our system enable self-locating studs and track, without the need for component drilling, on the basis that all fixings points and required slots are pre-punched as part of our in-line roll-forming process.

We have invested substantially in the latest software and hardware systems enabling our E-Frame technology platform to provide fully framed panels that do not require jigging. Assembly is further aided by data screen printing and colour-coding of components.

As well as delivering projects faster, lowering costs and improving quality, the use of DfMA techniques results in better operational and in-use outcomes. Fundamentally, DfMA requires the design team to shift their thinking away from traditional means of construction to scenarios where buildings are assembled rather than constructed – maximising opportunities for offsite construction, ultimately creating a more controlled and efficient working environment. This is combined with the increased productivity generated by maximising activity in a controlled factory environment. Our contribution to the project team goes way beyond the supply of light gauge steel frame solutions! On all projects we endeavour to influence the project team culture and through CPD presentation activity, manufacturing facility tours and design software demonstrations we are happy to impart our knowledge to achieve the best project outcomes.
