Werner Mantz Vivian Maier Thomas Kellner Ted Van Cleave Pol Ubeda Hervas Nick Frank Matthias Hoch Matthias Heidirich

Some Of Their Work Box in red = my shoot

Mantz:

I have chosen this artist and these images because I'm focusing on shadows and lines, I also plan on incorporating a staircase in my final piece, these images give me certain ideas on how to do this.

Although, even though these images are suited for black and white, my images may not, and I may want it to be in colour or maybe do some colourpops instead of simply black and white.

I have chosen these two as again in focusing on stairs and I like the angle of a birds eye view of stairs, I also like the rough texture the top image gives as its quite a hazy picture.

I’ve chosen this as I like the shadow the balcony's give on the rest of the building, also how the windows line up and the contrast of the black windows to the white building although I would like the shadows to be exaggerated more, as I’m aiming for a shows and lines theme and these balcony's remind me of a staircase.

Maier:

Again my main focus is shadows, shadows on floors like the one I’ve taken, cropped and turned black and white, also upped the brightness and contrast.

I like these images as they’re specific to my theme in that they contain shadows and lines and especially the top image as its of interesting angles and stairs.

Kellner I chose Kellner in the first place as my original focus was interesting points of view and buildings but now I’m doing shadows and lines, sticking to interesting angles though which is how this image is handy and still slightly relevant, I have not taken any images relevant to Kellner’s piece, as it is not relevant to my final piece either.

Cleave

I like these images as again they stick to my theme and I like his interesting use of colours, especially the tone of purple in the bottom image and how the white contrasts great with the black in the corner image, I have used these images as inspiration at Victoria baths in photographing the roof.

Hervas

I have no images related I like Hervas’s use of interesting positioning of to this except peoples bodies in order to make these shadows. standard Even though I find them interesting, shadows unfortunately I cannot use them very much as people aren't my main focus and any images similar would be irrelevant.

frank

This is very relevant to my theme as his photos are of mainly things like likes and interesting lines, this is very much like what I am photographing.

Heidirich I used Heidirich’s photos as inspiration for my theme as I love the angles he uses and the use of stairs.

Again more of Heidirich’s images of stairs, very relevant to my ideas for my final piece, he’s taken these images in very interesting places he’s clearly gone out to find.

Hoch

I chose to look at Hoch’s work as he has taken many images of random lines creating interesting angles and images, which are certainly like stairs in that they are lines and different angles.

SCHOOL PANORAMAS

What I did? • I used a camera to take about 7 images of me turning around about 360, so you can see all around me and all my viewpoints (even though its just experiments it links with my theme as it’s a different and interesting way of seeing things that you can’t on an ordinary image.) • I them went on Photoshop, opened up a document this shape and put all 7 images on it but in a panorama mode so they all join up like a pano. • I made it seen am is there were 2 parking spaces but there were only one because I like how it looked, it looked a more fuller image than the original.

I do not like this mini world because the sky isn’t full the whole way through the image so the sky suddenly stops and turns green. Secondly there’s nothing great sticking out like a building so its pointless. Although the right half I like as the world part looks like a tennis ball.

Diptychs And Triptychs

Colour block

What I did? • With the diptychs I did the same for each one, took a picture some something, for example a door, then took a very close up image of that same door. • Then I went on Photoshop and put them on the same long shaped rectangular document, leaving a space between the two. In that blank white space I got the drip tool, clicked on the colour on one of the images that both zoomed and not have in common, but not so in common its overwhelming, then paint bucketed it in. • With the triptych I just took 3 images of the exact same door but different angles and then on Photoshop put them on a long new document and put them next to each other, more zoomed out image in the middle to break up the image and so its not all the same and zoomed in.

Colourpops

What I did? • • • •

For the colour pops, I did the exact same for each one. Firstly I duplicated the layer of one image. I turned the image on top black and white. Then all I did was pick a specific part of the black and white image that previously was quite a bright, significant colour or an object in the image that stands out from the rest, that I wanted people to focus on when they see the image. • Then lastly I got the rubber tool and very carefully and precisely rubbed out the focus image.

SHOOT 1

About shoot 1 • There aren’t very many images in shoot one because I was just getting a feel of the urban theme and was unsure as to my focus. • I liked the look of graffiti and there's lots of it in my area. • I also like all the shadows and the gate bars (lines). • I have used image 6737 as my front cover background and a variety of my other images from this shoot for my name and the title ‘URBAN’. • I could use some of these in my final piece but I’d much rather use shoot 2 as that’s where I had my main focus and better images so even if I do use any, it would be max 2 and probably image 6928 or 6929. Although this would mean going back and editing this when I have plenty in shoot 2, it would be impractical to actually use these.

BEST IMAGES

Why are these my favourite? • Even though my images aren’t really focused, the main theme overall is urban and I think these are all very urban, especially the graffiti. • Also they link in together as not only are they all interesting but all have lines in it one way or another, mainly fences and gates and railings, with exception to the graffiti.

EDITS

What I did? • The top one I stretched the image out sideways, then turned it black and white right after I turned up the brightness and contrast slightly. • On the middle one I turned up the brightness and contrast then stretched it out sideways. • For the bottom edit I did the same as what I did to the top one but without the brightness and contrast. There is very minimal difference. • I stretched all images out as I find this position makes the lines flow nicely. • I found that the brightness and contrast made the fence contrast well with the lake and trees.

What I did? • Top left I changed the colour to red slightly to see how much colour would affect the impact of the image. • Below that I simply just cropped the original image as I wanted more focus on the graffiti, not the background. • Top right I used the cropped image and turned up the brightness and contrast to make the white stand out. • Below that I simply used the image above, turned down the brightness and turned it cyan, again just to see what impact colour would have on the image. • And finally the middle image I used the bottom right and turned up the brightness and contrast a lot to make the white graffiti pop then added more green.

SHOOT 2

About shoot 2 • In this shoot I had a much clearer vision of what my final piece was and the sorts of images I should be taking to achieve a successful final piece. • As you can clearly, I aimed to capture shadows at interesting view points(img 8828). • I also tried to get lines and stairs which are visible throughout my whole shoot. Especially images 8706-8828. • This leads to my final shoot as I plan on putting lots of these on windows movie maker to show my development and the thought that went into this shoot, I definatly plan on editing them and putting the edits on windows movie maker as well. • Also I plan to use grids and layering, all the stairs and line are helpful with this as they look very good meshed and layered together, maybe in black and white. • Lastly I will use wooden planks and my edits to make one big set of stairs all from different images of stairs, probably in black and white with high contrast between the two.

• I think this image looks cut up almost and as if its rule of thirds but not directly in the middle of the screen. • If it was slightly to the right it would be a neater, rule of thirds image.

BEST IMAGES

Why are these my favourite? • They are my best images of shoot 2 because they either best represent urban in general like the street signs or are of stairs, shadows or lines which is my theme and main aim. • Or on slide 51, bottom left of the street is basically rule of thirds and just a good image overall.

EDITS

What I did? • To the stairs image I increased the brightness and contrast then turned the image black and white. I did these steps all after I very slightly cropped the image to focus on the stairs. • To the trio image I first cropped the entire image and saved it to focus on the shadows, secondly I upped the brightness and contrast then turned the image black and white. The order I have presented them in is the steps I took. • The big image at the bottom is one of my favourites as I love the way the shadows are placed. I cropped down the image to focus on the shadows, and to really make them pop I increased the brightness massively(probably more than I should) and slightly increased the contrast then turned it black and white, I really should've increased the contrast more but the effect it would have wouldn’t make a huge difference so I best move on to something that needs lots of work or experimenting like the Victoria baths shoot. • To improve these images I probably would’ve played around with the black and white levels but these images are still fine just the way they are.

What I did? • These are placed in order left to right of when I made the changes. • First I increased the brightness. • Then the contrast quite a lot but it looked rubbish with lots of contrast so its quite limited. • Thirdly I turned it black and white. • Then I increased the brightness and contrast for the last time. • Lastly I cropped the image down then heightened the black levels so its more intense and gives a contrasted effect. • This image is okay but very boring, the black and white have amazing contrast but after I cropped it the black took over the image almost completely.

3

What I did? • 1- I cropped the background out of the image to focus on the stairs. • 2- just to try it out (not much different from 1) I turned the contrast up a bit. • 3- I turned the brightness up lots so it looks more popping and bright. • 4- just to add more definition and colour I turned the contrast up a lot. • 5- I turned it black and white then turned the contrast up a bit more just so has that stronger effect. • 6- all I did here was crop it down further to really focus on the black and turned the black level up lots. • I like all of these as it shows how I got to 6 and the steps I took, also I like the contrast in 4.

1

I really like this image because of the way the shadows are positioned naturally and I can do lots with it. I turned this image black and white after cropping the amount of the image I needed which is mainly the shadows and the urban graffiti in the background to add some culture. Again I turned up the contrast and brightness, and I then turned the levels a lot, the black up lots and the white quite a bit to make the shadows look really stand out like and deep on the floor.

2

I then duplicated the layer and moved it slightly to the left then changed the duplicated layer to darken I like this edit because it looks meshed and like its actually been shaken slightly.

On this image I kept the same as image 2 but changed from darken To diffence I also (as you can see) increased the brightness and contrast drastically to give it a bold effect. I don’t like it at all as it looks messy and in thought out although it very much was and took me quite a while to achieve this, I prefer image 2

Here I took image 2 but instead of the duplicated layer being diffence I changed it to screen. I did this (and same reason for image below as well) because I wanted to experiment and see what effects would look good where. I think this image is very busy and I’m not very keen because although it looks quite okay its too full on and dark.

These 4 shadow edits I did could be incorporated in my final piece as not only do they show my development and what I can do on Photoshop but they are quite interesting to look at and are heavily related to all my other work and edits which I think would make the windows movie maker movie look ordered and good as a whole.

I turned this image black and white after cropping the amount of the image I needed. Again I turned up the contrast and brightness, and I then turned the levels a lot, the black up lots and the white quite a bit as the slight amount of white that’s actually in the image needs to stand out. I then duplicated the layer and miss-placed it to the right a little bit, it has minimal effect on the background but makes the stairs and the person look different

I used this image and changed the duplicated layer to diffence Then just to finish this new image off I upped the contrast ever so slightly just to make that black (which I now have more of) really show

I really like this edit as its very interesting and instead of it being a quite simple image I’ve taken a sample of the image an turned it into something very different (almost a completely different image all together). One bad this about this is it does look quite sinister which I’m not to keen on.

This image isn’t very much different from the original except from being slightly moved. I do like it and the levels of the black and white although there's nothing very special about it so I altered some things and made this one.

This is one of my favourite shadow related images I took, purely because it looks really interesting and I can crop it at any point but here I chose to crop it so the lines are all going one way and it goes thick and thin. Even though I quite like the way the glare looks in the top right, its not really necessary or relevant so I could crop that out next This is the image cropped

What I did? • Firstly I cropped the image down to what I think is relevant or needed to have a decent effect and where I wanted the attention drawn to. • I then turned the image to black and white to get started. • I turned up the contrast which I find is important in editing all my images as it has a great affect and intense feel. Also the brightness slightly. • I then turned the levels a lot, the black up lots and the white only slightly as white isn’t a massive part in this image and it’s a coloured floor, if it was a white floor I would’ve heightened the white levels and brightened to give a better effect.

VICTORIA BATHS (phone)

About Victoria baths shoot • I took pictures of rules of thirds because its (I think) incorporated with lines and interested angles or viewpoints. • I took images of stairs with shadows coming through the window and the banisters making the shadows look odd and lined. • I took a great deal of images of the frame work on the ceilings as it looked really interesting and different, also these images reminded me of Ted Van Cleaves work which is similar to what I’m trying to achieve for my final piece, or at least the types of image I need to guide me in that sort of direction. • There wasn’t a great deal of ‘stairs’ but in the pools there were at least 2 ladders in each of 3, so as this is very much a type of stair, I took a few of these all from different angles like underneath looking to the sky and vies versa. • Lastly as I liked the image of gates and that sort of angle I re took something similar of a green gate which I plan to turn black and white and play around with the contrast and levels

.

BEST IMAGES (from phone)

The best outcomes of my rule of thirds images. Or images that look long or never-ending corridor effect.

Panorama of whole of top floor and three of my favourite stair, ladder images. (I turned the middle ladder image into a colour pop on my colour pop slide previously)

Split the image up into different segments. Different way of looking at things like Different angle of gates and stairs and metal barsviewpoints. links in with my lines theme.

Three of my best images on interesting lines, mainly of the roof and ceiling frame work.

VICTORIA BATHS EDITS (phone)

3

I will probably include a few if not all of these 4 in windows movie maker as I like them all and they show how some slight movements have a big impact on how the image turns out. 4

2

• Here I took one of the favourite images of a green gate, firstly turned it black and white, messed around with levels ensuring the black was fairly high, and the white even though it plays minimal part in the image because it shines through some of the blackness in areas, lightening up the image slightly. • Then I highered the brightness slightly because we want the image to be quite subtle, and then quite a lot of contrast but not so much it looks overdone and unreal or tacky.

GRIDS

What I did? • I think this grid is okay but I’m not completely liking how the images aren’t equal, I intended to make it mismatch but Id prefer if it was equal. Although, it does give good insight to the different viewpoints of shadows and stairs. • I firstly cropped out the view in the background as although it’s a nice image it would be irrelevant. • I upped the brightness and contrast then turned it black and white, I made sure I went on levels and increased the intensity of the black lots which worked really well. • I then duplicated the layer and slightly moved the duplicated layer and turned the effect of the copy to hue • I then added the new image to a new document to start of my grid. • Then I cropped down the original image to just the dark shadow bit and added it directly below my duplicated image on the grid. • I then flipped the original image before the duplicating and added it below my cropped image of just the rails, showing my contrast of where the sun hits the white with the defined shadows.

What I did? • This is number 6 from slide 32. • What I did here was I opened a document and placed the image on it, taking up a ¼ of the page in the left hand corner. • I duplicated the layer 3 times and placed them like this. • I think this is good but I didn’t really have to do much to it. Looks okay but very simple and doesn’t really have a powerful effect.

What I did? • Firstly I took one of my Victoria baths images and cropped it down so it made interesting lines and shapes. • Then I heightened the brightness and contrast and turned it black and white. I played around with black and white levels for a while until I had a good contrast between the black and white. • I then opened a blank document on Photoshop and put this image on it. • I then repeatedly kept duplicating the layers but rotating and moving around the images until I achieved this interesting grid, clearly showing my main focus of lines. • This leads to my final piece experiments as I could use it on windows movie maker to show how I got to my final piece. • This is my favourite grid as it looks good and links in with my interesting lines and viewpoints.

What I did? • Here I got my images from shoot2 edits (I explained how I did them in the previous slides). • Then I opened a document and arranged them like this. • I’m not too keen on this. • It does look quite good but I only used different images to experiment but I prefer the look of grids al the same images, like slide 45.

What I did? • Here I got my shoot 2 image of a well contrasted interested building and did the usual black and white, then played with levels, and of course contrast and brightness to achieve a decent looking image. • I then changes the effect of the many duplicated layers to darken (duplicated on image, changed it to darken then just duplicated that instead of changing every single normal image to darken.) • I then just played around with the positioning of each layer until I got this, then flattened the image and of course then changed the black levels of the now whole grid image to add to the contrast. • Then saved it. • This is possibly my favourite grid image as it works really well and I love how the lines and dark parts all mesh well together.

What I did? • Basically the exact same as what I did to slide 85, except I made the top right image version ever so slightly rotated to give an abnormal random effect. • Also its not as busy, less duplicated layers and only the image in the middle is effect ‘darken’ • I do like this but I think that the slide 85 version just outshines it and shows a more complex way of seeing the building. Although I like this ones simplicity.

What I did? • This is my image from slide 61, explanation slide 62. • I edited the image to higher black levels and higher brightness and contrast to give a more powerful block effect. • I them dragged the new edit onto a blank document and began duplicating multiple layers, but after the first duplicated layer I made it ‘darken’ and continued to duplicate that. • I then just had a play around and found that some of the duplicated layers had to be ‘normal’ and the rest ‘darken’ so there wasn’t just multiple black triangles everywhere, just a few to break up the image and add a spacious effect. • Lastly I flattened the image to make it one grid, and then highered them black(slightly white to make lines stand out) levels quite a lot just to add the extra pop to the image as a whole. • I like this grid because its exactly what my theme is, its an interesting way of looking at something as simple as a shadow and turning it into all these diagonal, weird lines that contrast well.

Final piece experiment

What I did? • This is just 6 of the images I took of my mini practice final piece. • I now know exactly what my final piece will look like. • To begin with, I got a slim piece of card and folded it vertically multiple times, not evenly otherwise it would all be plain, simple and boring. Also I wouldn’t be challenging myself enough. • Then, I printed off all my favourite edits in quite a small size (roughly about 7x5cm) and randomly, but carefully glued them to the card. • I didn’t stick ALL of the images down whole though, only the ones I especially wanted to be seen and the ones that had the best effect. • I mainly just cut the images up and stuck them on, some randomly, some triangular and some just anywhere with space. • I really like the outcome and consider it a successful experiment. • I feel it represents my theme well as it interesting and abnormal.

What I did? • This is just one of the images from slide 91, only edited. • I turned the brightness and contrast up all the way up and of course turned it black and white. • I turned the black levels up extremely high and the white levels almost as high (not as much as black as I wanted to show off the shadows more than anything and how interesting it looks). • I love this because it shows how contrasted and interesting the images are and the effect they have on the white background.

Projection onto mini staircase • image

What I did?

• Cardboard stairs

What I did? • I cut a huge piece of cardboard to look quite slender, then I folded it in an uneven way to look like a set of stairs, purposely wonky to look interesting and not just plain, measured out perfectly. • There’s no point wasting money and paper by printing off images and sticking it on because of the mini version I did I know it looks good and is what I’m looking for. • I then went to Tec and got a wooden version of this, only of course cut up into individual steps (7 overall pieces of wood).

• No images on stairs yet

What I did? • Firstly, I measures out the cardboard stairs and got them individually cut into MDF wood steps. • Then I got PVA glue and formed the staircase slowly but surely by holding it in place for around 30-40 minutes and put special blocks on the back for further structure. • Before I successfully formed this staircase I tried nails, this only split the wood so I tried wall staples which weren’t powerful enough to hold it all together and wouldn’t go all the way through the wood.

• Finished stairs

What I did? • After I formed the staircase completely, structure wise, I printed off large images of all my edits. • I began experimenting different positions and got a scalpel knife (I found this accurate and much neater than scissors) and abstractly stuck on the shapes, leaving no spaces so the wood is completely covered.

FINAL PIECE PLAN WRITE A PARAGRAPH DESCRIBING YOUR FINAL PIECE INTENTIONS EXPLAINING THE FOLLOWING: In my final piece I plan to use my shoot 2, and maybe some of my Victoria baths shoot. The main photographers that have inspired my photos and work are Mantz, Maier, Cleave, Hoch and especially Heidirich. I found these inspiring as I love how Cleave positioned his camera to create all these shapes and abstract lines, and then the way he edited them on Photoshop to make them look abnormal and funky, secondly I found Heidirich most inspiring as I love his image of the aluminous pink stairs, on a blue background and the way the stairs are (lines) is very interesting and is the reason I chose stairs as my main focus for my final piece. The techniques I plan to use are probably mainly going to be black and white with definite high brightness and contrast because I love that intense contrasted effect. I intend to present my work in two different ways, firstly I will have blocks of wood, stuck together as an actual mini staircase, maybe around 6 actual stairs, consisting of 12 images all together so you can clearly see my pictures. But before I do this I need to experiment on card and do some quick practice models, and they must be rough so I can use up the majority of my time on the real thing (I’m doing this so I know what will have a better effect, black and white or colour). Secondly I will do a little presentation to show how I’ve developed my ideas in windows movie maker, it will consist if all of my grids, mostly edits that were successful from Victoria Baths and Shoot 2, and a few Colourpops that turned out well.

NOW CAREFULLY CHOOSE THE PHOTOS YOU WILL USE AND PUT THEM IN A FOLDER IN YOUR HOME FOLDER.

10 HOUR LESSON PLANNING 1 /

Start first experiment on card with black and white images first, on mini staircase.

If not enough time, finish experimenting- maybe begin on lesson 3.

3 /

Begin to get the sizes of wood prepared and think about positioning.

4 /

Once I know the logistics, get my images printed off.

5 /

Begin to form the staircase.

6 /

Continue with staircase.

7 /

Complete staircase.

8

Attach images to the staircase and then it is complete, and resting against a wall.
