Agri Commodity Update Commodities In News  Coffee growers are worried about fall in international Coffee prices and heavy and endless rain which could lead to black rot disease and increase in berry droppings. The cost of production has also gone up drastically high because of shooting labour wages. This year’s intensified monsoon has raised concerns among Coffee growers who find it virtually impossible to spray fungicide. Excess rain will lead to crop damage and berry dropping. Black rot is considered the second important disease affecting Coffee. The disease affects both Arabica and Robusta Coffee during monsoon. The most striking symptoms are blackening and rotting of the infected leaves, developing berries and young twigs. In severely affected areas, a crop loss of 10-20 per cent is recorded.  Adequate rainfall and a increase in acreage by 8 percent under Sugarcane, a bumper crop is expected in next sesaon which is likely to result in record high in Sugar output in next year. The total acreage under Sugarcane in the country is estimated to be around 54.35 lakh hectares this kharif season, an 8% increase from the previous year, according to a statement by the Indian Sugar Mills Association.  Chhattisgarh farmers have completed sowing in 26 lakh hectares of land so far against a target of 48.20 lakh hectares during the ongoing Kharif season. The sowing for Food Grains, Pulses and Oilseeds crops had already been completed. Agriculture Minister informed that last year sowing was conducted on around 48 lakh hectares of land during the Kharif season. The Government has targeted to provide 9.18 lakh quintals of seeds of Food Grains, Oilseeds and Pulses crops of the hybrid variety. A total of 8.42 lakh quintals of seeds had been stored in various warehouses out of which 6.88 lakh quintals of seeds had already been picked up by farmers. During 2017, 8.73 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizers were provided to farmers.

ECONOMIC NEWS Haryana agriculture and farmers’ welfare minister, O P Dhankar said that farmers of Haryana will get a benefit of about Rs 6,000 to Rs 18,000 per acre after Central Government approved a steep rise in the minimum support price of crops, giving farmers the promised 50 per cent return on input costs. Apart from this, compensation amounting to Rs 3,257 crore has so far been given to farmers during the tenure of present State Government to make farming a riskfree venture. He said that increase in Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops as approved by the Central Government would benefit the paddy farmers of Haryana with Rs 6,000 per acre, cotton farmers with Rs 18,000 per acre and bajra farmers with Rs 7800 per acre. He said due to the increase in MSP, Haryana would get Rs 1500 crore which includes Rs 1200 crore for paddy and Rs 300 crore for other crops. 

The Union Cabinet will consider tomorrow a proposal to increase the minimum price that sugar mills are required to pay to cane growers by Rs 20 to Rs 275 per quintal for the next marketing year starting October, according to sources. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is scheduled to meet tomorrow and is likely to consider a proposal to fix the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the 2018-19 marketing year, they added. The government recently announced a sharp increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of kharif (summer-sown) crops including paddy. The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) had recommended Rs 20 per quintal hike in the FRP of sugarcane at Rs 275 per quintal for next season. The FRP, which is the minimum price that sugar mills have to pay to sugarcane farmers, is Rs 255 per quintal for the 2017-18 season. The CACP is a statutory body that advises the government on the pricing policy for major farm produce. Usually, the government accepts the CACP recommendations.
