Agri Commodity Update Commodities In News  The pink bollworm has again attacked Cotton plants in Maharashtra this year, causing concern among farmers and the state government. The pest had caused large-scale damage to the Cotton crop last year in central and eastern Maharashtra, the state’s main regions producing the commodity. The pink bollworm attack on Cotton has been reported this year from Akola and Washim districts in Vidarbha and Nanded and Parbhani in Marathawada, a senior official in the agriculture department said.  Indonesia’s shipments of Crude Palm Oil and its derivative products declined in the first half of this year as demand dropped amid import tariffs, the industry association said. Data from the Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI) showed that the cumulative exports of the commodity by June edged off about 2 percent to 15.30 million tons. The downshift on the country’s crude palm oil export was largely attributed to the decline of shipment to India and European Union, the association said. The imposition of import tariff by India, and campaign on deforestation issues and scraping of policy in usage of food-based biofuel by the European Union have nudged and hemmed in the shipment of the Crude Palm Oil and its derivative products to the nations, GAPKI said.  The country’s cultivated land is shrinking due to depleting ground water levels and extreme weather conditions. This will impact the agriculture output and may upset the Centre’s target of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. According to the government data, in 2017, nearly 40 lakh hectares of agricultural land was impacted because of water woes, resulting in a drop in the area under cultivation for crops such as Rice, Pulses and Oilseeds. The total area sowed with Rice, Pulses, Oilseeds and cereals alone shrunk by 29 lakh hectares the same year.

ECONOMIC NEWS 

The country's mango production is estimated to be up by 8 per cent to 21.02 million tonnes in the 2017-18 crop year on higher output by major growing states, according to an official data. Production of mango stood at 19.50 million tonnes in the previous crop year (July-June). "The country's mango production has been increasing every year. The government has taken several steps to boost production and export of mangoes," a senior agriculture ministry official said. There has been a focus on improving productivity of mangoes under the central sponsored scheme Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, the official said. As per the latest data, maximum mango production is projected to be from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka during the 2017-18. 

Several corporates engaged in direct procuring apples directly from farmers are set to venture into Jammu & Kashmir for the first time this year, even as apple production in Himachal Pradesh is expected to drop significantly, industry insiders said. Companies such as Adani Agri Fresh, CONCOR, Reliance Fresh, Mother Dairy and Big Basket had started direct procurement of apples in Himachal Pradesh in recent years to avoid middlemen. But drop in the output due to climate change in Himachal Pradesh had squeezed margins for companies and also increased competition in procurement. Scanty rains, less snowfall and rampant deforestation had affected the apple output in the recent years in the state. Kolkata-based conglomerate ITC Limited plans to start direct apple procurement for the first time this year. “The company will buy from Himachal Pradesh as well as Jammu & Kashmir,” a company executive told ET on condition of anonymity. With output in Himachal Pradesh is expected to be only half of the normal level for the second season running mainly because of scanty rains in the last two months, most corporates plan to procure apple from farmers in Jammu & Kashmir this season.
