"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” (Picasso) The Arts are well and truly alive and thriving at UWCSEA Dover thanks to the vision, leadership and commitment of the Epiphany team. From a very young age, the desire to create is inherent in all of us and the Epiphany showcase demonstrates an abundance of talent and creativity to inspire others to pick up a pen, paintbrush or instrument, or collaborate with others to create or perform. Sir Ken Robinson said that “creativity is as important as literacy and numeracy” and it is never more true in today’s world where involvement in the Arts is undoubtedly good for the soul.

Engagement in the Arts has been found to increase wellbeing and opens opportunities for social connection through community.

The past 2 years have been challenging for us all and the Arts are a way to express ourselves, connect with others and improve our mental health. Making art through the Epiphany community encourages freedom and individuality and fosters independence and curiosity by continuing a creative passion or developing a skill outside one’s comfort zone. This year over 100 students have been involved each month in creating visual art, photography, film and theatre, poetry and writing, dance or music and the Epiphany team shares that they strive "to bring change, unite communities and show you the unnoticed”. Since 2012, Epiphany has given artists a voice and the opportunity to be seen and heard via social media and in the tent plaza, and this year Epiphany will be exhibiting for the first time in the main Gallery. As the Head of HS Visual Art, I have so much gratitude to the dedicated and innovative members of Epiphany, guided by an exceptional team of leaders and heads championing the Arts, inspiring others to pursue their creative side and sharing their passion and skills with the community. Taking part in the Arts is important for everyone and it is our hope that through this showcase you will be encouraged in your own pursuit of creativity and find joy in the beauty and creativity in others.

CORE

Niru Kalyanaraman Executive head Art was often something that I undervalued as a child, disregarding it as just another “useless” hobby.

However, little did I realise that music and writing have been my most loyal companions. It has grown up and stuck beside me through thick and thin, and this realisation can be attributed to my experience in epiphany.

As an artist, I can definitely acknowledge that my capabilities developed beyond the confines of writing incohesive narratives and playing dissonant renditions of the songs on the radio . There is more sophistication in my work and time has developed a genuine passion in my once “obsolete” hobbies.

As the executive head alongside Sarah, I have only developed invaluable leadership skills but I have found an avenue to channel my desire for a more artistically diverse environment into fruition.

TEAM

Sarah Ahmed Executive head The arts have been a significant part of my life, ever since I was a young kid. I have always been interested in every aspect of it, whether it be sketching, taking a drama class or participating in UN night. My favourite form of artistry though has always been drawing and painting, where I can create artworks that demonstrate my emotions or show what inspires me. Being such a big leisure activity of mine, two years ago I created an Instagram account to share my pieces to a larger audience, and this further expanded my innovations and originality in art. I am extremely grateful to be a part of the Epiphany Leadership Team and expand our school’s platform in terms of creativity. It is important to me that the extraordinary talent we have in our community does not go to waste and instead through Epiphany we can bring opportunities for the artists so they can continue growing.

Ishina Gujral Head of publicity I have been doing art since I was four years old and, ever since my first art lesson, it has been an extremely significant part of my life. Art is something that I always make time for no matter how busy and stressed I am. Having a leadership position in Epiphany has given me the wonderful opportunity to gain a sense of the art community on our campus and connect with other like-minded artists, but more than that it has allowed me to take my passion for art to the next level. Epiphany has also expanded our school’s creativity and art platform which is amazing, since it is bringing the entire art community together and is rapidly growing each year as well. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to promote the arts in our community.

Tina Ma Secretary Art has always been the first thing that comes to my mind when it comes to expressing emotions and identity.

Painting has helped me so much with my stress and made me step out of my anxiety and focus on the conceptual part of life. Being part of Epiphany is a unique experience to me that not only provides a platform with a variety of opportunities but more importantly seeing the influence of art on our school community and even beyond. Taking part in the leadership team has helped me to build more connections in the art community, also having the chance to promote and publicize art at our school and expanding the community has been truly meaningful to me.

Juno Pelczar I hadn’t realized how important art was to me until recently when I joined epiphany in Grade 10. Crafting has been a constant companion since (my parents tell me) I discovered an innocuous crayon lying in the house. Though I like to think that I’ve refined my ability from my days of vandalizing baby books, the sentiment is still the same: creating something that’s all my own and having fun doing it. When I joined epiphany, I became more conscious of my art production, helping me grow as and communicate with other artists, often with vastly different experiences.

Leading epiphany with Kohana has meant that I’ve been able to connect with our art community through running projects like inktober and interacting with UWC’s online art community. My goal is to impart some of the great joy that I get from art, and my hope is that the Showcase will give me something to show for it.

Kohana Ranjan I’ve loved doing art since I was very young, about four or five and it has been such a huge part of my life until today. Art has always been an opportunity for me to express myself in different ways and allows me to stay calm and sane during life’s ups and downs. I truly enjoy being part of Epiphany, it has allowed me to explore my passion for Art as well as nurture others and have a sense of community amongst the artists in our school. I enjoy the lack of rigidity in Epiphany and how everyone can express themselves freely with no boundaries; in different mediums and themes. I think that it's important to have a platform for people to showcase their skills and passions with others who are similar to them and appreciate one another’s artworks. Art is important at school because it brings us together as a community in ways nobody would originally think of and being a leader in Epiphany has helped me nurture artistic talent because I understand where they are coming from, being an artist myself. It has allowed me to have close relationships with the members and form a close-knit family :)

Helene Van Hove Photography is an art form that allows me to express myself and capture the things I love in a beautiful way. I have found that my love for photography is beyond the scope of epiphany or random pictures, but that regardless of where I am, if I see something I feel needs to be remembered I find myself wanting to take an abnormal amount of photos. I enjoy epiphany as it allows me to share my work with others and see their perspectives on it. This is crucial to me as I want to be able to improve and progress in the field. I also find epiphany important as I see others work and it inspires me to try out different styles and widen my abilities.

Art is a form of expression for all students that allows them to separate themselves from books and express themselves however they want without being told whether they’re right or wrong. Being a leader of epiphany photography has taught me that organisation and collaboration is crucial for anything, it allows for efficiency and much better work. It has also taught me that I like being someone people can come to with ideas and problems they may have.

Tanvi Saxena

“Every artist was first an amateur” said American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. To me, Epiphany is where this quote applies. I have been a part of this arts platform for a year and a half, and I have never stopped growing as a creative. I have discovered true potential as an artist, and the ability to candidly express yourself through your work.

As an art form, Photography is quite overlooked. It is viewed as ‘simple’ and ‘straightforward’ at first glance, yet it holds an incredible amount of power when delved deeper. It captures moments. Sometimes rare. Fleeting. Candid. And other times poised and purposeful, all equally astonishing.

This is what drew me into Photography; the ability to create and orchestrate a tangible piece of memories and ideas, all with a camera.

Being a member of Epiphany’s Leadership Team has caused me to solidify my values as an artist in order to be a possible mentor to other budding creatives that want to unlock their potential in the field of Photography. So far, there has been remarkable work in the department, with our members displaying a range of styles and genres, unafraid to push themselves to discover new artistic possibilities.

L I T E R A T U R E

Dheer Sanghi My reading journey has had its fair share of ups and downs. I often get immersed in a book, can't help but to pick it up and not put it down until the last page is turned, but just as often I find myself not knowing where to start. Being part of Epiphany has given me a way to creatively express myself during those times. It forces me to reflect, and pushes me to try new writing styles. The freedom that Epiphany gives is what attracted me to it. Being able to write anything, in any way, and receive guidance and support is what makes this community so special.

Art is fundamental to any school and student body.

Looking around UWC, it is clear the effect Epiphany has on our culture and campus. From working with Student Council for certain projects, to spreading awareness, Epiphany - and art as a whole, has an important place in any school.

Kushan Mahesh

Ever since I was a child, I have been an avid reader.

From fantasy to historical fiction, all sorts of novels consumed me — I felt some sort of escape into the magical reality of literature. Ever since Grade 8, I have always been writing short pieces of both poetry and prose as I find it the best way for myself to express the things that I observe, and has provided me with more means to appreciate the world around me — both natural and manmade. I truly enjoy epiphany as I love curating and reading through our members’ submissions, and experiencing the vivid stories that they create. I further enjoy the collaborative aspect of epiphany, and the fact that we get to partner up with other members across departments. In all honesty, it has been a tough start to the year, but I think this has taught me to value communication and organisation, and has helped me improve a lot for the future.

M U S I C

George Xia I’ve been playing the piano since I was four years old and I have always enjoyed playing it. The piano is an instrument that has a wide range of tones and one of the only few instruments that can play both the accompaniment and the melody at the same time. I’ve always found music to be a way to express your identity, emotions and feelings. I see Epiphany as a way which allows students to share their skills with others as well as allow them to learn from each other and take inspiration from one another. I think art is important in our school as it allows us to find others with similar interests and make new friends. It allows us to learn from each other and develop new skills.

Anika Gupta I’ve been playing instruments ever since I can remember. Music is something that's been with me my whole life. It's something that I grew up with and I cherish it deeply. It provides me with a creative outlet and allows me to express myself in ways that words cannot. Being a head of Epiphany Music has been really important to me because it has helped me to further realize my passion as well as given me the ability to help other people like me to get the same enjoyment out of it that I do. Its also helped me to find like minded people who I am very excited to interact with. I’m very happy to be a person who helps to promote the arts at our school because I feel like they are a very integral part of our experiences growing up and can help shape a lot of minds too.

Ahaana Mahapatra Dance has always been a method of expression ever since I was young and continues to be one for me today. Using my body to express myself has always been a stress-relief and a creative outlet for as long as I can remember and has truly taught me lessons that are absolutely invaluable. Epiphany provides a platform for dancers like me, who use dance not just as a method of expression but also a part of life and gives access to opportunities and exposures like no other community. Seeing people in our school community use their creativity to channel their ideas and emotions has been a wonderful experience seeing it firsthand within my department and showcasing this passion and skill is an absolute necessity not just for the UWCSEA community but for communities all around the world.

Tiara Jain My interest in dance started in middle school when I casually started taking open dance classes. From then on I have branched out into a variety of styles and have had the honour of performing and choreographing in multiple shows. Dance has always been about storytelling and expressing emotions but at the same time enjoying yourself. To me, learning, teaching and performing dance exposes me to the different skills that are critical for my future. Heading a department within Epiphany has helped me grow as a person through collaboration with others. I think the creation of Epiphany brought a massive benefit to our school, as the arts tend to be overlooked and under-appreciated.

Epiphany is a platform for the arts to be showcased to all. I hope that as the head of dance I can inspire dancers to be proud of their talents and encourage them to express themselves with no judgement.

Zehua (Benji) Xu I am always passionate about filmmaking and have more than 4 years of filmmaking experience. I enjoy epiphany because I appreciate how this platform allows people and ideas to be connected and how it provides opportunities for artists. I’m very happy to serve as the head of epiphany F&T because I can further develop my filmmaking and leadership skills through the opportunities epiphany provides, but more importantly, I can connect other fellow artists to communicate and collaborate and move forward together. Art is not just about creativity, it’s about influence and emotions. I hope me as the head of F&T can inspire fellow artists to bring an influence through our artworks.

Srishti Saha

Having only recently taken up an interest in acting and the performing arts, I found it difficult to express myself at first. However, after a couple years of getting to know new people, working with and learning from them, I’ve found theatre to be a worthwhile pursuit that both challenges and excites me. Joining Epiphany has helped me get to know more people and collaborate with them to bring forth fun and creative works. I personally believe that art is a means of bringing people together and discovering our personal identities, and therefore should be something available to everyone. As the head of theatre, I hope to propagate this belief and encourage more people to express themselves freely.

LE-AN LU It was in this school that I stumbled upon poetry. Third grade - we were asked to write a poem, about anything Mrs Ryan said. Yet, my mind was empty as my paper. A poetry virgin, unbeknown to me was the transcendent sensation of translating feelings into art. Panicking at lost time, I wrote the first thing that came to mind, worried about turning in nothing. The next day, we began “Carpet Time”. While tracing patterns on the carpet, Mrs Ryan announced that there was one poem she would like to share with us. I was tracing a heart when the first line she spoke, was one I wrote. Looking up in disbelief, she continued to read: my second line, third, fourth. She ignited the flame that day, opening my eyes to my untapped potential. Thank you Mrs Ryan, for seeing in me what I could not. This is for you.

Writer’s Block

I don’t know what poem to write, My brain is truly empty.

There’s nothing that inspires me To make my poem funny.

I know there should be rhyming words To throw into the mix, But how can I add rhyming words When my mind is in eclipse?

When words try to formulate, They can’t make it past my lips.

I can’t seem to get it right the more I try and try, Procrastination beckons me, so hard to deny, deny, Forbidden fruit of my labor, will surely lead me awry.

I want it to be lighthearted, Depressing stuff, forget it, There’s too much of that in the world, Don’t even get me started.

I’ve since checked the fridge five times, As if new things will appear, Upon racking my brain once more, The process feels familiar.

Nothing seems to cohere, Like a pictureless puzzle set, The ones only psychopaths, are desperate to get.

Oh writer’s brick, I mean writer’s block, You’ve got me all upset!

I guess this will just have to do.

NIRU KALYANARAMAN I’m Niru (she/her) and I am an 11th Grader this year.

I have been a pianist for nearly twelve years of my life and I also enjoy writing in the process. I have always found poems to be a great way of self expression and exploring my imagination.I really like the freedom and finesse with poetry, which is what captivates me to this craft. As someone who has many thoughts and feelings constantly racing, I find that writing poetry can be incredibly liberating for me (emotionally of course).

BOYI LI Hi! I’m Boyi. I adore reading so I enjoy writing too. I joined Epiphany this year to motivate myself to do more of the latter.

Once I start I can’t stop, but it’s the starting that’s hard. I’m very self-indulgent with anything I write, and they don’t mean much to me besides from having fun. But they do have the potential to mean something. Happy to have you read into it and present a close-literary analysis, as with this showcase piece.

33 He measures my body with this hands He measures my body with his hands, inch by inch. Grapples the root of my thighs with unhesitating sureness. Is he not embarrassed? It’s funny, how business-like he is. He is rough with me, sometimes, rough with me, mostly. How does he know just the places to press to hurt the most? He has made a study of it. He is making me see white-hot stars. His hands steadily work away the knots in my corded muscle, under the soft layers of my fat. What’s my body to him, a man who has felt so many? Is it strong, lean, water-fat or just plain fat? I wonder what he is thinking. Numbing pure biology. Grunts, cartilage, tendon, bone. Breath fogs up.

Surely the pain ends now. Relief and suffering wash through me, side by side like waves. I contort like a dead-eyed flounder on the butcher's block, as he kneads something hard again and again, a glitch under my skin, grounds it into pulp. I feel liquefied. He keeps stroking my hair; I think he is fascinated by its length. Now he bends my leg so my knees open, embarrassing because the lining clings stickily to my skin, he and I realise at the same time how much I’ve sweat. Now he threads his fingers through mine, and it’s almost tender, and then he twists my arm to the back. Is he nervous about his performance, that perhaps I am falling asleep? Sometimes I can feel his breath down my neck, soft pants, but most of the time, he exists in the form of a point of pressure, a knot of soreness, a print of pain, here and there, somewhere, on my body. So, so, so it is. So it ends. He grasps my neck. I’ve never felt frail. But under him, I could snap like a dry brittle branch.

Body massage

GABBY MCGREGOR Hi! I’m Gabby and I’m in 10th grade. I’ve always enjoyed writing ever since I was young when I was constantly making up stories to tell my family. Short stories are a way for me to express myself and connect to others through my writing but also unattach myself from the limitations of the world. It’s how I can take a break from stress and let my imagination roam free. For my showcase piece, I have written a short story using more personal emotions than I am used to but I hope you all enjoy it.

Cuckoo clock A cuckoo clock sits in the living room of my grandparents’ house.

It is old and dusty.

The mechanics run five minutes late.

“Where’s the bird gone?” I had asked at age 7.

The little bird inside, once a vibrant shade of red, was now a rusted marron; except for its tail, a stark white, where the paint had chipped off and no one had bothered to repaint it.

It no longer appeared at the 1 hour mark, it stayed in its home, the doors shut.

“It’s broken.”

No one remembered when the bird stopped working.

How long was it broken before I noticed?

No one cared to fix it; I mentioned it once to my pa and he brushed me off, “No one notices.”

I noticed.

I wanted it to sing again.

I had forgotten the tune, perhaps it had forgotten too.

There are a lot of broken things in my house.

The mirror shows someone I do not recognize.

The person who stares back at me is older, dark shadows beneath the eyes with creases around the mouth.

A stranger with my name but not my face, a shadow of the future.

My hair is getting longer.

My mum says I look older with my hair up.

I keep it down.

My favourite shirt, a bright yellow sun printed on the middle of it, doesn’t fit me anymore.

I watch my little cousin take it from the pile of hand-me-downs.

Where has the time gone?

She sent a photo of her wearing it.

There’s a new stain, bright red.

I don’t reply.

A photo of me and my sister when we were younger hangs on the wall next to the stairs.

She’s 18, I’m 10.

We are different in the same way: her hair is darker, her smile is thinner.

My smile is full of teeth and so wide my mouth was an oval, compared to the perfect shape of my sisters.

My sister was my role model as a child, anything she did I did.

At 4, my sister got rid of her fringe; so did I. At 9, I started playing tennis like my sister.

At 12, I changed my smile to match my sisters.

I still don’t like it.

I don’t think I ever will.

I called my pa yesterday; he joked saying he wouldn’t know me the next time he saw me. “Two years is a long time,” He said.

I asked about the cuckoo clock, if it was still broken.

It had been fixed; the bird now popped out every hour, showing off its new cherry red coat.

The clock was still five minutes late, some things don’t change, but now the bird had opened its doors, no longer hidden away.

The bird sings a new song now but I don’t mind.

I think I like this one better anyways.

I look in the mirror now, hair tied back, a new shirt on.

The person staring back is familiar.

They smile at me, a perfect arc.

I smile back.

XIAOYAO (MARCUS) LU Hello! I am Xiaoyao, (sometimes known as Marcus) a 9th grader and a first year member of Epiphany Lit. I started writing recreationally during a struggle I had with myself and found it a way of understanding myself and those around me. My writing was always a bit dark - shadows I could hide in - and eventually it felt like I was pushing myself into a world I was not actually in.

My showcase piece - ‘Somewhere, Sometime’ - is the antithesis to that. I tried to make it as authentic as possible with little bits of my memory recalled in the living room with my awesome parents, enjoy!

Spring in the narrow streets, a little city with a little rain, a thousand silver strings hitting the pavement, quiet in its pitter-patter, blurring dusk’s blinking lights.

Summer in the schoolyard, a tight hug, a face I can barely recall buried in my shoulder, my eyes staring over her hair at people I knew, how could I tell her…?

Autumn in the blazing leaves, dad running up a little hill in the night and smiling - a quiet smile I never see - just the two of us, watching the full moon.

Winter in the falling snow, running - no, waddling fits it more, in puffy jackets and double-layered pants, towards my returning mum.

That unfinished cake in some hotel in Madrid, that huge mushroom we found on a mountain in Hebei, the sunglasses that fell into the Niagara Falls…

Can you still picture home?

JIANSHENG ZHANG Hey everyone! I’m Jiansheng Zhang from Grade 10, a passionate poet as well as left-wing internationalist. I started writing when I was in Grade 6, inspired by a romantic encounter between me and a girl that I loved. Since then, poetry has become a means for me to talk to my inner self, a connection to my loved ones, and an attempt to grasp a trace of truth in this ever more complicated world. Despite being a polyglot, I refrain from using English in my literary works, as I prefer to preserve my cultural identity by writing in my home languages, Shanghainese and Mandarin. The piece of my showcase, written in a creole of Mandarin and Shanghainese, sets to explore my search for true love and identity. I hope that you enjoy it!

Clocks

Are the drop of a rollercoaster, That moment forever frozen Before your guard and stomach and heart plummet and you’re falling.

No, not in love, but downwards, Down that deep spiral which never ends.

Only slows and then speeds up so fast that you never even realised it’s been almost two years

And you’re not happy anymore.

Clocks are the food for roots in the soil Sprouts that protrude and flourish.

Live alongside landmines

Used to murder children one hundred years ago.

HINA SUGANO Hello, my name is Hina. My name is Hina, and I was originally attracted to the beauty of Japanese as a language. I've always loved literature and poetry in Japanese, which is why I decided to try my hand at creating my own. My showcase submissions are mainly Japanese Tanka and Haiku. I don't have a specific genre that I'm focusing on, but I've tried to write poems that I've come up with on the spur of the moment and apply them in the seven‐five‐syllable meter with as much correctness and beauty as possible.

春夏秋冬

届かぬか 天を向けども 馬酔木花

落陽が 白夜を夢見た すゑのゲシ

香り立つ 朱に交わらぬ 藤袴

CHLOE PRASETYA Hi, my name is Chloe and I’m in tenth grade. I’ve loved reading and writing for as long as I can remember. Increasingly, though, I see my poetry as attempting to challenge dominant narratives, question mainstream discourses around provocative social issues, and augment the voices of the communities I represent. Writing has become an avenue for me to explore my heritage in all its grittiness, to search for closure in the depths of memory.

A lesson in shadows

the weight of july slings me full in the face. sepia-tinted guilt. aches too caramelised to give voice to. long hours the glaring amber floodlights of the bathroom. my bones riddled with hailstones & my words punctuating the quiet–– never quite puncturing it. if only. snip goes the open-mouthed scream of scissors against my hair & i watch my dignity slip through the eaves of my fingers, dark and oil-slick like a baby bird. later my mother will tell me, an edge to her voice like a slammed door: metal does not bring closure, child. i weep until figures of speech no longer suffice & convulse in birth: artificial, shadow-tinted. outside, the conifers perforate the rafters of the sky, fingernails tarred. a murder of crows descends like a crime. shot through the gizzard, they bleed black-river-Styx. the sky has been chewed up & spat out with abandon. it bleeds lasciviously from the pores of my skin. i handle my hair ribbons as i would blood-soaked bandages. the light kisses me, mournful. ye of little faith, it gleams, brass-cheeked like the mother of my youth. society’s gaze a tempestuous river. open my mouth, now, and let the deep blue tear my tongue out.

DHEER SANGHI I’m Dheer, and am head of Epiphany Literature. I’ve always been a reader, from comics at a young age to poetry to novels. I don’t write often but love writing poetry, as well as non-fiction pieces about things that interest me. Poetry helps me express myself and allows me to experiment with new techniques as a writer. I have tried writing haiku's, free verse poems, and ones with rhyme schemes; however this showcase, I want to write a dramatic monologue, telling someone else's story. Not only will this be a lot of fun; it will also push me as a writer.

The Single Tree

In the field that touched the horizon, reaching all four corners of the Earth, lay a single tree, wrinkled, and wizen, yet still looking majestic, as if knowing its worth.

Off the branches hung a swing, it’s chains creaking with rust as they swayed with the breeze, why is it here amongst these vast plains, for nobody to enjoy, as far as the eye sees.

Has this tree seen bloodshed, Or children laughing, playing beneath it’s shade.

Are these fields it stands on soaked with dread, Or the place where star crossed lovers layed.

As the moon creeps up, replacing the sun, And the stars glisten with esprit, I wonder what stories have been spun, What battles have been won, In the fields that contain the single, lonely tree.

KUSHAN MAHESH I’m Kushan, and am this year’s head of Epiphany Literature. I’ve been an avid reader ever since I can remember, ranging out from short stories and poetry to novels and prose. I truly enjoy writing descriptive pieces as I find it helps me observe and understand the world around me. I’ve also recently been writing more and more non-fiction / essays and incorporating that into my writing. For this showcase, I would like to write a structured piece of poetry as I feel this will push me even more.

Me and her My eyes scanned the room, scouring each wall for a sign of solace. I didn’t find any.

I walked through my past, my future, It was as if I had stopped time.

What have I done.

Have I fixed it.

Is it all better now.

Will she be proud of me.

Help me?

I feel it. I feel it through my fingers, a lukewarm cherry syrup seeped inside the crevices of the thick-cut grooves of my palm.

I’m laughing.

I lap it up — like a dog.

A dirty, filthy, stinking Rottweiler.

I’m a mongrel. Woof, woof.

My mind, drunk, delirious, dirtily high.

I bit the walls.

SRISHTI SAHA I’m Srishti, in tenth grade and in my second year with Epiphany. I’ve loved reading and writing for as long as I can remember, and like to experiment with my writing styles as much as I can in order to learn and grow. For this year’s showcase, I’ve tried my hand at a poem that conveys the inner conflict of a person going through life, captured by their inner dialogue to their reflection in the mirror. It was interesting to write, and I hope it is engaging for those reading it.

Mirror Hello to you, Faceless youth, Who doesn’t know Where life will go.

Greetings to you, Seeker of truth, Blinded by the glow Of glory long ago Shackled by the knowledge That you’ll Never Be acknowledged.

RADHIKA KHEMKA Hi, my name is Radhika and I’m in grade 11. I’ve always been an avid reader—books have always brought me comfort and I love the feeling of getting lost in what I’m reading, whether it’s poetry or prose. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for words and power they have.

They’re little squiggles of line that have the ability to bring a person to tears of joy or sadness or fury. This appreciation is what made me fall in love with writing.

I can't say I write very often but I’ve written in a variety of different poetry styles, although my favourite style is free verse poetry. I also enjoy writing some other forms of nonfiction and I really just love to block out the world and let my words flow. This showcase piece is one I wrote many months ago, and it was inspired by everything that was happening in the world at the time.

WENJUN (JACK) QUE Hi! My name is Jack from grade 10, and this is my first year of Epiphany. Realizing how most forms of story can be done through literature heightened my interest, being able to explore people’s ideals through the media or in combination with other media led me to attempting my storytelling through literature, and to join Epiphany Lit. My interest is mainly in Sci-fi, I've been a big science fan since my first science fiction novels and I want to use this genre and give it my own spin in my upcoming piece.

Death At which point would death be acceptable?

During nuclear warfare in which casualties are unavoidable?

When the world is ending and in order to stop it sacrifices are required?

Or when life becomes meaningless after reaching a point of immortality at which suicide starts to sound like a good idea?

Well, the answer to that is usually never, as living creatures and because of our great Ms. Gren we have to live, to exist, to struggle for our pathetic existence. Time is an enemy, our killer, interesting enough we also can’t exist without time.

Many beliefs suggest the acceptance of death, as it is inevitable, tis point of deep understanding that relates hearts and minds with each other. Yet, it also goes directly against the point of our species, that is to stay alive.

So why live?

Why live when it is our creator Time that creates us and chooses our demise? To live for the point of living, despite the many excuses we attach to living to cover up our original purpose.

Well, the cause of us living is a direct result of our belief to live, our want to live in our genes. When the first bacteria of life forms are created, they get to choose between the incentive to live or die. Those who were lucky to have wanted to live are our ancestors. The point of living is exactly just that, to live while the world does the opposite, and I guess to live is what the dead can't do, so why not?

HANDA (BOBBY) JUNG My name is Handa but I go by Bobby too. I have not always been a writer but I have always admired famous literary figures and aspire to be like them one day. I would like to write a novel but I do not have the time now so all I have produced is poetry. Themes and topics I like to explore are the conflict between nature and society, history, human nature, nature, class, modern legends and myths. I like writing humorous poems as well.

The World’s Worst Poet

In a fit of paranoid, psychotic narcissism I scoured known human knowledge, Hoping no one had usurped my throne Of being the world’s worst poet.

To my horror, I discovered a pretender had long surpassed me: The hateful William McGonagall.

In seeking to confirm the poor quality of my rival’s work, I found words of such astounding genius that it tempted me to plagiarize.

Divine verse and new gospel such as ‘Beautiful railway bridge of the silv’ry Tay Alas! I am sorry to say That ninety lives have been taken away On the last sabbath day of 1879.’

Words so beautiful, that insecurity blossomed in my soul, And I questioned my choice of profession.

Foolish critics may call such work atrocious and lousy, But they simply do not understand his genius or mine.

Oxford educated underachievers, Doing little with their lives except tearing those who Dare to speak the language of the heavens.

They may laugh and lampoon us, But they will never dare to write beautifully like William or I.

The beauty of our words has enshrined us into literary history In the same league as Shakespeare or Byron or Tennyson.

Even centuries later, romantics and dreamers will still recite ‘Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.’

While critics and their words will fade into the vast oblivion, Us modest poets will be writing of trees, birds and trains in literary Valhalla.

SASHA TIERNAN I’m Sasha and I’m in grade 10. This is my second year in epiphany and I have loved all the exciting opportunities and collaborations with other departments along the way that have indefinitely contributed to my development as a writer. TANVI SAXENA I’m Tanvi, co head of Epiphany Photography ‘21~’22! I would like to start off by saying that the idea of Photography has always inspired me from a very young age. I was intrigued by how one could capture a precious moment in time and keep it forever, as something tangible. I fully involved myself in this art form once I got my first camera, a Nikon D5600, which has stuck with me through thick and thin. I have explored numerous styles, including landscape, nature, and architectural photography. However, one style that truly stuck with me is portrait photography. Capturing faces and their expressions. Telling stories from their eyes. The profound simplicity of it grabbed my attention, and I have been experimenting with it ever since. My showcase submissions are a crossover between architectural and portrait photography; capturing people in their element doing something they love. The photos capture the true essence of human passion and dedication, all is told in the face.

HELENE VAN HOVE Photography is an art form that allows me to express myself and capture the things I love in a beautiful way. I have found that my love for photography is beyond the scope of epiphany or random pictures, but that regardless of where I am, if I see something I feel needs to be remembered I find myself wanting to take an abnormal amount of photos. I enjoy epiphany as it allows me to share my work with others and see their perspectives on it. This is crucial to me as I want to be able to improve and progress in the field. I also find epiphany important as I see others work and it inspires me to try out different styles and widen my abilities. Art is a form of expression for all students that allows them to separate themselves from books and express themselves however they want without being told whether they’re right or wrong. Being a leader of epiphany photography has taught me that organisation and collaboration is crucial for anything, it allows for efficiency and much better work. It has also taught me that I like being someone people can come to with ideas and problems they may have.

HEATHER WOOD I have been taking photographs seriously for 3-4 years. I love to photograph people and landscapes. Recently I have enjoyed exploring the power in simplicity. I like to take photographs that have good lighting and an interesting composition with minimal editing. This is what I have tried to capture with my showcase photographs, many of which were taken at Gardens by the Bay here in Singapore.

YUNGE (CHARLIE) LU I have been taking photographs for more than 7 years already. I first started capturing pictures of landscapes and family members during oversea travel. From then on I began to explore different branches of photography. Now I particularly enjoy wildlife, architectural, and long exposure photography.

SAMANTHA LEE I have always been fascinated with photography, but I think my love for it truly began from taking random pictures on disposable cameras during holidays as a child. After that, I began experimenting with film photography which has now expanded to digital too. Photography has changed the way I view the world, enjoying street photography especially, I now tend to notice the beauty in complete strangers, and the mystery that comes from knowing nothing about them, yet a piece of them, a moment of their lives is immortalised forever at the snap of a lens.

TAYLOR HOANG Being able to capture a moment in time is something only photography can do. When covid hit, I became more invested in capturing moments of my life, to make sure I treasure and remember special memories. From then on, I have developed my photography skills from not only capturing my friends and family but to landscapes and film.

CYNTHIA MUELLER Photography has been a huge passion of mine for many years because of how powerful it can be shown through the capability to capture the present moment and preserve it. Sometimes words can’t encompass the full story, but a quick snap has the ability to connect us to our past vividly. With that mind, I pretty much take photos of everything, but I particularly like to take architecture and nature.

JUNGHOON MA Starting photography at a young age using a smartphone, taking photos of absolutely random things, it has been nearly 8 years since I started this hobby. Through exploring different genres of photography such as portrait, wildlife, and landscape, photography has made me so much more observant and aware of the beautiful little things that surround me in daily life. More importantly, photography helped me to notice and capture meaningful things like connections, expressions, feelings, and especially the small tedious things that I want to remember.

KRYSTELLE PUA I have been taking photos for around 3 years now. It started around the time I got my hands on a DSLR camera, and I strived to continue developing my passion for photography. My favourite types of photography are definitely subject photography and candid photography, because I enjoy capturing facial expressions and special moments. Being able to turn these memories into tangible photographs is something I treasure very much.

To freeze and capture a moment in time to ensure that such a memory lasts forever is a skill that only photographers can fully utilise.

MEGHNA BADINEDI I have always been volunteering to take photos during vacations of either the view or my family but never took it up as a serious hobby until recently and it is something I thoroughly enjoy. I usually take scenery or landscape photographs, trying to capture nature or the culture of where I am but I also have taken portrait shots of my friends, which is an area I want to do more of, experimenting with different styles. The blue toned photo is of Mount Fuji when I visited Japan, the roof picture is of a Balinese house and the portrait photo of my friend was taken in Singapore with different alterations of the same image scattered.

JOSHUA PANTEKOEK I really started taking interest in photography since my dad showed me his timelapses he made during road trips.

I was fascinated by him, and by the idea of abstract landscapes. Whenever I can, I try to capture each beautiful moment. I’ve had my first camera for roughly 2 years already. I am also interested in capturing portraits, however, I am still learning how to take them well. I am still a beginner in both of these respective areas, however, my interest and passion for them with the support of my dad, has helped me to continue to strive and be a better photographer.

KABIR SURI Photography is an underappreciated form of art. It is the freeze frame of a single moment in time, something that can never be gotten back save for that one photo which preserves that scene for eternity. When I started taking photos around 5 years ago, I had some semblance of what this meant, but over that time (which includes taking Photography as one of my GCSEs), my understanding has improved, and with it my ability to take photos. The area of photography I enjoy most is capturing motion frozen in time, creating a juxtaposition of reality against imagery that is simultaneously both striking and provocative, and I hope by continuing to mix and match I can refine my ability as a photographer and better each and every photo I take.

ALISHA CHADHA Photography has been an ongoing passion of mine for many years. It has made me more aware of our surroundings and all the details around us that are worth remembering. I love taking photos of everything, but especially landscapes and animals. I love to explore the different styles of photography offered and also learning how to develop my skills and learn more about the power that a photo has.

RAGHAV JINDAL I view my life as a journey towards an endless search for frames, and my frames as an extension of my personality.

My passion for photography remains fuelled by the challenges that it brings with it every single day. In fact, the zeal with which I had embarked on this journey continues to drive me to this day, motivating me to learn, explore and grow. While I remained drawn towards portraits during the beginning years of my tryst with the camera, I went on to experiment with travel, vintage, monument, splash, and product photography as well. I strongly believe that my passion for this skill is here to stay and I truly look forward to learning more about it.

ZARA YONG I have always had a passion for photography but I haven’t really focused on it seriously. I have found that photography has helped me capture memories and moments of my life to help me remember them because sometimes the moment passes too quickly. I chose to take pictures of things that are interesting, pretty and significant, and to me that is usually nature.

RIVA PUNAMIYA Ever since I was younger, the fact that I could just capture a moment and freeze it forever had always fascinated me.

However, I never took photography seriously until about 2 years ago. Throughout the years, I have not only improved my photographing skills and become a more experienced photographer, but also this passion has allowed me to appreciate the beauty in a variety of places in Singapore that I had not explored before. I am learning to broaden my skills in all genres of photography, but typically I take photos of nature, landscapes and occasionally architecture.

HINA SUGANO I have been taking pictures for a few years now using a smartphone, a digital camera or a DSLR camera on an occasional basis. There is no particular trend in the photos I usually take; I take pictures of things that I find while walking around, or things that I just happen to pick up, and set up my camera to capture them at the best angle. I like to take pictures of scenery and things that I use in my daily life rather than particularly beautiful things, so such works would be in this showcase.

YURIKA TSUDA I was intrigued by photography when I saw my father taking photos of several tourist attractions during the holidays.

Since then, I started to take photos of nature and sceneries I encounter in my daily life. I have been doing photography for a few years now, but I am still in the middle of learning about photography. Although I don’t have a high performance camera, I love taking photos to record my memories. This photo for the showcase was taken in my home country, Japan.

AUDRA ROSENZWEIG I have been doing photography for 5-6 years. I enjoy taking photos of anything that catches my interest. I want to capture the world around me. I also enjoy using Photoshop to create sometimes surreal pieces that comment on some aspect of the world. I am very curious about how things work and often try to show that in my photos. All photos in this showcase were taken in Singapore.

SAIYURI SURESH My hobby of photography started when I was very young. I mostly like taking portraits but I like casual landscape photography as well. I love using lightroom to edit my pictures because I think it is extremely user friendly and gives you a lot of variety in terms of the tools. Photography to me is a form of expression where both the audience and the photographer can feel an emotion by looking at the picture. The broad genre and the amazing experts in this field inspire me everyday to work harder on my passion.

ZEHUA (BENJI) XU I’m Benji. Photography has always been a hobby of mine and I’ve been studying it for 3 years. I’m particularly passionate about colour grading and editing photos to enhance the message my photos are delivering. One of my submissions is a highly saturated orange placed symmetrically with interesting lighting. I’m excited to continue my interest in photography and bring an impact through my photos.

YONWOO CHOI I have always enjoyed taking photos, especially when travelling.

I have started taking photos ever since I got my phone, which is around 6 years now. I always loved how the sky set, as the colours change. Taking photos made me aware of how beautiful my surroundings are. I usually take photos of scenery, and sometimes buildings. I’m constantly trying to improve my photography skills, so that I will be able to take higher quality photos.

HANNAH VAN KEULEN I’m Hannah, currently a grade 12 student. In this year's Epiphany exhibition I included two different types of my photos. The first one was taken in Mongolia. This was one of the best trips of my life so it brings back many happy memories for me. I often go through phases where I enjoy nature photography and other times portrait style photography. The second photo I have submitted for this exhibition is one of my favourite portrait photos I’ve taken of a friend of mine. I have always enjoyed photography because I think a photo can say so much more than words can, whether that's about a person or the landscape.

I have had a lot of fun being a part of Epiphany throughout all my high school years. It helped me maintain a balance in my life between IB and ensuring that I stay in touch with the artistic and creative side of me. I will definitely miss it when I leave for university!

MAITRI JAIN Art is an expression of ideas and a medium that has acquainted me with myself and others. From taking photos of tranquil backwaters to capturing ruins of the Roman empire, I realised that art is a reflection of the world. Epiphany has been an integral part of my high school life, and I remain grateful for the opportunity to share my appreciation for nature with other artists across different mediums. My experiences here have taught me to appreciate how culture can shape perspectives, and the wealth of diversity at Epiphany has immensely widened my creative horizon. This year, I present to you ‘Abloom’, a blossoming yellow lotus captured at Gardens by the Bay. To me, the lotus is symbolic of life during the pandemic. Though we were cast or still may be treading in murky waters, like the lotus we must emerge and embrace the joys of the present and have hope for the future.

WENJUN (JACK) QUE Photography started off with me as my task to photograph my parents and my family on holidays. My father has always been the one to stay in one location for a long time to take a photograph that he likes, I guess this interest towards photography has been passed down to me and this hobby stuck with me passively in the background over almost 11 years.

The ability of a camera to capture photons and turn its energy into an image is incredibly cool to me, it acts as a time capsule from the specific moment. The tech behind photography and its imaging ability interests me to take more interesting photographs.

I don’t have a goal with photography, or something specific to convey. Any thing of visual interest to me on a random basis while I walk around I capture with my camera. Thus making a random pics collection, thus would be my piece, a collage of random interesting things or phenomenon.

SANAAYA NANDA Hi! I’m Sanaaya, a Grade 9 student, and this is my first year in Epiphany. I have always been interested in photography, however, I haven’t really focused on it seriously before. My fascination for photography stems from taking pictures during my travels as a young child, and what I find most intriguing about photography is the idea that any subject can be seen from a myriad of perspectives, and every angle that it’s captured from gives it a different character to it. I enjoy most types of photography, but I think still life photography would be my favourite and the one I explore most often. I also enjoy travel photography, as it encompasses capturing the area’s landscape, people, cultures and customs . A genre of photography that I would like to explore more is candid photography, as I feel that this is more authentic since this includes unplanned moments, meaning that this captures the genuine emotion of a moment.

JURI YANO Going around the city and taking pictures of various buildings in Singapore for my design class portfolio, I was stricken by the ability of photography to express something that cannot be expressed with words, which is yet so valuable. As I delve into the world of photography, I was further inspired by the beauty of photo editing, which made the photos even more meaningful.

This year, I decided to exhibit a photo of the Singapore Art Museum, capturing the depth of not only art, but also something that each of you value the most.

LUCY WU I like to take photos, but I enjoy being in front of the camera more, as a model. The device I’m currently using is iPhone11 but I also own a polaroid camera. I enjoy using photoshop to polish the photos I’ve taken. I love to capture moments or small things that I can find beauty in and I can express my emotions inside my artworks.

The theme of my submission this year is the views. I’ve included photos taken from a a city I used to live in and country that I’ve recently visited.

ARIADNA ROTARU I’m Ariadna, currently a grade 12 student. I discovered my passion for photography from an early age. Whenever me and my family would always go on trips, I would always be the one responsible for taking pictures. This is also how I got to discover my passion for landscapes. If I analyse most of my submissions, the majority of my pictures are connected to nature, whether it’s a gorgeous sunset, an unusual colour palette sky, oor a sea view. The thing that inspires me the most when doing photography are the simple details that add to nature's beauty, and that we rarely pay attention to. I think it’s amazing to see how with a simple leaf, or the morning dew, we can have some impressive pictures. Being an artistic person, I’ve always sought to create a balance between my academic and creative side, and Epiphany was the best choice for me.

KELLY KIM After finding my mom’s old camera this year, I sparked a big interest in photography. Photography soon became a big part of my life because I was taking photos of my food, scenarios, friends, family- basically everywhere I went! It became something I started attaching a lot of meaning to in respect to my life. Photos are a way of not only like a second eye that captures not just special occasions, daily life, and nature, but it can also be used to express myself and my thoughts.

LEONOR CARNEY Hi, my name is Leonor and I became interested in photography just over two years ago and have continued this hobby in my free time as well as through school. One specific type of photography that really excites me is abstract photography, something that I tried encompassing in my photo. I love how close ups display a different perspective of a whole object.

MALIHA (LIHA) HENDERSON Hello, I am Liha, and this is my first year in Epiphany. I have never done photography seriously, but I enjoy photographing landscapes and nature. I began exploring photography when I was in primary school and I fell in love with being able to capture moments in an artistic way. I really like to work with lighting in my photography, because it allows me to turn something simple into an abstract photograph

JIACHENG SUN Hello! I am Michael Sun. I developed my interest in photography back in elementary school. I was first influenced by my dad who loves photography. I tried different styles as well as different types of cameras. My favorite types of photography are architecture and nature photography. The reason why I enjoy photography is that I love recording meaningful and memorable moments.

VICTOR TIAN My name is Victor, an enthusiastic photographer. I’ve been learning photography for 3 years. I perceive photography not merely as an art discipline, but also as a way to communicate ideas and emotions among people. I’m glad to be a member of Epiphany photography where I can share my artwork and appreciate the amazing works of other people. I will continue to be passionate about photography and hope to influence and inspire through my photos.

ADITI MAHESHWARI Hi, my name is Aditi Maheshwari, and I am an aspiring nature photographer. During my trip to the Shamwari Game Reserve, I used binoculars to view the various types of flora and fauna and felt inspired to capture their beauty. This love for wildlife prevailed when I visited the Yellowstone National Park, where I used all sorts of lenses to encapsulate the wonder that is nature- in its raw form. I decided to keep the lenses in the photo so the viewers will almost feel like they are looking through their binoculars and viewing the animals for themselves. Even today, seeing these animals coexist gives me hope that we will overcome these difficult times together.

KEANE GAN My name is Keane. I have been an avid photographer for the past 4 years, often taking pictures of urban settings as I am passionate about street photography. In life many people, including myself as well, give little to no time appreciating our city landscapes as we roam around so often in its environments that it is frequently taken for granted. Hence through capturing moments in urban life or architectural beauty, I strive to show my audience the charm of metropolitan areas.

XIAOWEN HUANG To me photography is a way to release my stress in life, and I have been using smartphones to take photos. Sometimes I use a camera, but I capture great landscapes or even shapes or logos that I find interesting. I used to zoom in the camera to capture the beauty of nature, because sometimes seeing things without the background, I focus on things I see when I walk on the street.

MELIS ASIYO Hi, I’m Melis. I am a grade 12 student and this is my second year in Epiphany. I usually work with acrylics on canvas which is exemplified through my showcase pieces. For this work I wanted to focus on the beauty of the natural world trying to develop my skills in realism. The main theme is blue scenes as I focused on lighting and shadows. The smaller piece is of the sky and whether it is the sun or the moon or what point in the day it is, is up to interpretation.

The larger piece is a close up of the sea in which I focused on reflections and how the waves should be highlighted.

JOONYOUNG (JADE) BYEON Hi I’m Jade and I am more of a traditional artist. My favorite mediums are pencils, oil painting, and charcoal. I have been drawing since I was small, but as I got older, I have broadened my extent of visual arts via experimenting with different styles and mediums.

MEERA CHADDHA Hello, my name is Meera. This is my second year doing Epiphany. I have enjoyed painting and drawing ever since I was a child. As I have grown older I have experimented with different art techniques, such as sculpting, using watercolour, mixing media, etc. I tend to lean towards using watercolour the most, but for my showcase piece I decided to go back to one of the first materials I have ever used: oil pastels. I chose to recreate Van Gogh’s famous starry night using paint and oil pastels. This reminded me of where my love for art began.

SOHYUNG "SOSO" COWELL Hi I’m Soso and I enjoy making paintings and drawing with charcoal and pen. I got into art during GCSE and I have pursued it further in IB. This year I hope that I can explore new mediums to broaden my skills.

EMILIE DAVID Hey! I am Emilie, I have done art for a very long time as a hobby, this is my first and will be my last year in epiphany (unfortunately). I mainly use black pen and watercolors on paper and watercolor paper respectively. I enjoy sunsets and landscapes for watercolor. For pen I enjoy a slightly uneasy horror style. With my showcase you may be intrigued and both uneasy from my drawings.

SOPHIA GOERTZ Hi, my name is Sophia and I have been in Epiphany for two years. My favourite medium to use has always been painting since I was really young. Although I started with drawing with pencil, I tended to enjoy mixing colours with acrylic paints more. At first, I was drawn to painting still life but, throughout GCSE and IB I developed my technique in painting and started to paint more portraits. This is shown in my showcase piece which consists of three self-portraits.

I wanted to represent the different layers that complicate dealing with complex emotions.

SEIKA KAWAGUCHI Hi I’m Seika and I have been part of the Epiphany visual arts for 2 years now. Art has been my main passion of mine, and I have worked myself to just continue improving on this hobby I have loved for the majority of my life.

My main genre and medium includes realism/hyperrealism using both digital and traditional mediums, anime, and also a few abstract or surreal works with some of my painting works.

My main goal as an artist is to communicate my own ideas and thoughts through my works, while at the same time continuously pursuing a higher level of quality in works I produce.

YEIN (JULIE) KWON Hi I am Julie, I have been a member of Epiphany Visual Arts since when I was in Grade 10. I am a type of artist who prefers to use pencil and pen. I also enjoy using devices such as an iPad to produce digital artwork. Music and people inspire me the most, and that is why I drew people for my showcase artwork. Enjoy.

SAKI MATSUURA Hi, I’m Saki and this is my second year in Epiphany. Art had always been my passion since I was a child, however I became more immersed into art since I decided to take art seriously as a course during IGCSE and IB, which allowed me to be surrounded by my talented peers. I find pencil drawings, acrylic paintings and digital arts most comfortable to work with. I started to draw digitally last year, and it has become my obsession ever since. When drawing or painting, I’m mostly inspired by Japanese culture and my imaginations, which is expressed through my showcase submission. It is an acrylic painting piece that I have completed through the Visual Arts course, capturing my multilayered emotion I held towards not being able to experience the highschooler life in Japan

KYLA MCHUGH I’m Kyla, I really love to work with paint, usually sticking to acrylic but at times I also branch out and try oil or watercolour painting as well. I enjoy doing sculpture, even making clay rings or creative crocheting projects. I have been doing art, especially painting, ever since I was young. However, I really found my passion for art in middle school, which is when I started practicing it more and developing my skills. I also decided to take art for GCSEs which helped me to discover and try new techniques I hadn’t considered before. Now I see art as a therapeutic activity and a way to relax amongst all the work IB brings.

NEHA RAVI Hi, I'm Neha. Being a design student for 6 years and a current IB design student I enjoy experimenting with Digital mediums to create creative designs. I also enjoy experimenting with different traditional art forms, my favourite being pen and watercolour. With my future heading towards architecture, I am currently working on a computer aided program called Rhino to create an architectural project which plays with the soft and delicate form of a sphere and morphs into a complex structure with sharp edges. I hope that I am able to capture the vast complexity of computer aided design through my showcase piece.

ZAHARA SLOVENSKI Hi, I’m Zahara, I’m a Grade 12 Visual Arts and Film student and I’ve been doing art seriously for around 5 years now! I am primarily a digital and mixed media artist, and I love combining film and animation with installation mediums.

My showcase piece is an illustration piece based off of the word ephemeral, which means “lasting for a short time”, and I used this to create a tarot-esque piece about my obsession with the passing of time. Art and Film are my ways of expressing myself, and I am inspired by a myriad of artists as well as my incredible peers.

LETAO SUN Hi! My name is Letao, and this is my fourth year participating in Epiphany. My art journey started when my mom signed me up for children’s art lessons at the age of three, and I soon fell in love with it. I work with traditional mediums such as pencil and charcoal, and recently I’ve been exploring oil pastel and watercolour, trying to step out of my comfort zone. My submission pieces include an oil pastel piece and a painting that I’ve created recently.

CHARLOTTE WILSON Hello, I am Charlotte, I’m in grade 12 this year. This is my 2nd year being a part of Epiphany. I find making art as a peaceful and stress relieving activity as well as fun. I also enjoy learning how to use different materials and genres of art. But I normally stick with drawing with ink or colours (markers and pencils), but this year I am branching out to watercolour, sculpture and maybe gouache too.

LAWRENCE ANG Hi, I’m Lawrence, I enjoy doodling and painting, especially on my legs and bedroom wall. I began using art as self expression when I started Elementary school. An introvert at heart, I mask myself with my loud personality and rarely show my true self to those around me. My art is a translation of my suppressed emotions and identity. I create with the goal of one day being able to help other introverted minds express themselves through Art; this has been my biggest motivation and inspiration when creating.

My showcase submission this year is a digital piece which encapsulates my current state of mind and life, a range of unclassified emotions that I feel but struggle to pinpoint and address due to my tendency to avoid the unknown.

SARA BROWN Hello!! I'm Sara, I mainly do digital art, though I enjoy traditional sketching as well. My pieces tend to focus on the figure and what stories you can tell judging by a person’s facial expressions, body language, or the way they’re designed. For my digital pieces I use Procreate to assist me in this goal, however recently I’ve been getting into traditional mediums once again.

ANYI CARABALI Hola! My name is Anyi and this is my first year as a member of Epiphany.I've been drawing since I was very young, I remember when I was a little girl I used to gather colors and then I used to make scratches, this made me very happy and I enjoyed it. For me drawing is freedom, it's what empowers me and gives me confidence because whatever the final result will be, it will be my artwork. I have never been in an art class as such so everything I know about art I consider a gift. I do realistic pencil drawings and recently started exploring color drawings.I am inspired by nature, because its beauty transmits peace to me.

TUYA CARDON I began doing art in kindergarten and it was when my mom put me in art boot camp in junior school that I decided that I have a passion for art. I have enjoyed all sorts of mediums such as oil paint, acrylic, pencil, watercolor, charcoal and more. Although I have recently begun to enjoy oil painting. I love realism art, and attempting to portray imagery in my own artistic way with lots of colours to create a warm feeling when looking at my artworks. What inspires me is the people around me, the minute I see someone create an amazing art piece, I feel the need to as well. My showcase is a view that I pictured as super vibrant and extraordinary, however when I look at the photo I took of the view it looks dull and grey. My artwork challenges the way people view the world and how emotions can affect the way you remember a memory.

YUYOUNG CHUNG Hi! I’m Yuyoung. I experiment with lots of mediums and I typically like to draw facial features. I get inspired by the spontaneous realizations and I feel this is best captured in depicting an emotional reaction. However, with my showcase submission, I decided to challenge myself by drawing a faceless figure with no discernable emotion.

LUCIA CRIPPA Hi, I’m Lucia! This is my first year being a part of Epiphany (visual arts). I have always loved doing art as it has allowed me to express my emotions in a creative manner. My preferred medium is acrylic paint however I would like to start experimenting more with mediums like watercolor and oil paint. My showcase submission this year will depict the vulnerability of Women and how it has allowed us to gain power and independence through it. The piece will be done using acrylic paint on a piece of canvas.

ARIA FAFAT Hey, my name is Aria. Digital art, as well as mixed media traditional art, is one of my favorite things to do as it allows me to communicate my ideas, emotions and reflections of what I see around me in a creative way. YUANYUAN (AMY) FAN Hiiii I’m Amy. I like both digital art and traditional media. Last summer, I started trying digital drawings, and I plan to focus more on it since it’s fascinating and more convenient. I prefer to draw original characters(oc) rather than portraits, so my drawings are more into a “comic style.” My showcase piece this year is the “Rose”.

CALLIOPE FOO Hi, I’m Calli. My preferred medium to work with is digital art and pencil on paper. I like to draw from my imagination with less references, and play around with colours to create visually appealing pieces. My showcase pieces this year reflect this, and emphasise enjoying the more mundane aspects of life through the use of vibrant colour.

ISHINA GUJRAL Hi! I am Ishina, the Head of Publicity for Epiphany this year, and also a member of the visual arts department. While I am more of a traditional artist, I have started exploring digital art this year and I love it. I have also been experimenting with oil painting and sculpting. Art has always been a huge part of my life - I started taking art lessons when I was 4. It’s how I relieve my stress and spend most of my free time. For my showcase piece, I have created a sculpture. I am really proud of myself since this was my first time.

CELINA HENKE Hi! I’m Celina. This is my first year being a part of epiphany and I’m really excited to make new artworks and explore my style and creativity further. I’m really enjoying digital art at the moment but also love painting with acrylic paint and watercolour! I get inspired by the experiences I've made over the years or from things around me, like the environment, and my emotions. I’ve been doing art since I was very young and have enjoyed it since! I love being able to express myself through my artworks. For this year's showcase piece I will be making a digital artwork which captures the overwhelming pressure, stress and the unrealistic expectations from teachers, family, friends etc. we as students have to experience on a daily basis.

HYOMIN "MIN" KIM Hi, I’m Min and this is my second year in Epiphany. Getting inspiration from my mom, who studied art for years, I started to draw since grade 1. As my mom majored in oriental painting, all kinds of traditional media were stored in my house’s veranda. Being exposed to those materials from a young age, I became more proficient and comfortable in using traditional media and now I can’t imagine my drawings without those materials. I do love adding lots of colours into my drawing but I usually make it black and white, which sometimes helps me to emphasize certain parts of the drawings easier. For the showcase, I tried to illustrate the preserved nature in the demilitarized zone in Korea which is 2m apart from 38th parallel north which is a border between South and North Korea. I used traditional media, pencil, watercolor paint, and crayons.

RAEEON KIM Hi, my name is Raeeon and I am a Grade 11 student. This is my first year of being part of Epiphany and I enjoy using oil paint and acrylic paint. I mostly work on still life drawing and I like using vibrant and bright colours in my works. I have been drawing since my childhood and it became my greatest interest when I was eleven.I started to develop my artistic skills furthur from grade 9. In my showcase, I attempted to visualise feelings of nostalgia and home through the colors and objects that I use. The medium used is acrylic paint and I put a lot of effort to present a sense of warmth in the atmosphere of the piece.

GRACE LAYARD Hi, I’m Grace Layard, a grade 11 first year epiphany member.

My love for art started when i was very young when i started to draw my own dresses and make them for my barbies, since then I have had the pleasure to try out all different mediums of art and have fallen in love. I really enjoy sculpting with clay and painting with oil paint. I took art in GCSE and now the IB HL visual arts course. Being in multiple communities in which they express their love for art in the same way I do is inspiring. Watching my peers create amazing pieces of art encourages me to be better and to continue my passion. As fashion design is something I would love to do at university, I am grateful that I am able to endure the courses and activities such as epiphany in the UWCSEA school community.

WEIZHENG (LEO) LI i I’m Leo, currently in Grade 11. I have practiced traditional art techniques for a while before, but now I prefer working on digital art with my tablet. My art mostly features individual characters (usually my original characters) in a daily life situation. This includes photographs of them on vacation, a snapshot of them finishing their daily routine or a captured instant of other more debatable scenes. My showcase submission is an example of such a work.

TIANA LO I’m Tiana, my preferred medium to work with is pencil, watercolour and digital art. I have been doing art since I was a child but only seriously practiced it near the end of middle school. I usually draw from imagination but I occasionally work with references based on inspiration. I tend to draw inspiration from nature, people I see, photos I find online, other artists etc.

KHAYIL MATTHEW I’m Khayil. I love doing mixed media and creating lots of visual interest. I prefer doing traditional art however I have started experimenting with digital pieces as well. I have been doing art for as long as I can remember.

MYRTO MOUNTANOU ROKA Hello! I’m Myrto and I have been doing art since I can remember! My favourite materials to work with are mostly traditional media such as charcoal, dry pigments, collages and ink, but recently I have been experimenting a lot with printing and animation. I would say that my inspiration comes from textures and movement; but also I find lighting and breaking things down to shapes particularly interesting. For my showcase piece, through printing, acrylic and coloured pencils I tried to visualise sadness; the feeling of feeling blue, how it feels to be swallowed by it but also how in a way, sadness can also be comforting.

NAOMIKA NADKARNI Hello! I'm Naomika and this is my second year in epiphany. I like to do traditional art with acrylic, watercolor and pencil, though recently I have been exploring digital art and would like to experiment with that further. I like to draw figures and faces, and generally am very inspired by people and capturing them in art. My showcase piece is a gouache painting, which is a medium I only recently started experimenting with.

JUNO PELCZAR I’m Juno, co-head of Epiphany Visual Arts ‘21~’22! I have doing art from the time I first held a crayon, but I’m most familiar with pencil art. I have a newfound passion for dip pens and watercolors, and at the moment I’m trying to widen my horizons in the digital art world as well. My subjects vary, but I especially love drawing people (both fictional and real), because it lets me represent them in a personal way. I love that art gives me such precise control over what I create and how I make people feel. My showcase piece, I’m trying to find new ways to use a medium that I’m familiar with. Enjoy!

KOHANA RANJAN Hey I'm Kohana, I am the co-head of Epiphany Visual Arts 2021-2022! I’m a painter and I prefer to use oil paints. I enjoy experimenting with new styles and figuring out what I enjoy doing the most. Art and painting has been a huge part of my life and has allowed me to express myself in a number of ways. I love how art helps me unwind and relax, it is a very therapeutic activity for me. My showcase submission is about the diversity you can attain when doing art and I feel like this piece portrays that a lot. My aspirations and feelings/emotions influence and inspire my art the most and I feel like it is conveyed in my showcase submission. Art is a passion of mine and gives me an opportunity to get away from the real world and focus on myself.

TRISHA RAO Hi I’m Trisha. My preferred medium to work with is watercolours and pencil on paper, however I’ve been trying out digital art. I like to draw inspiration from my personal experiences as well as characters from books that I read. I like working with references and adding my own experiences to them while painting or drawing.

Art is the main way of expressing myself and my emotions as well as relaxing, and I’ve been doing it since I was a child. My showcase piece includes a jellyfish as a representation of peace and tranquility we struggle to find in our lives.

KAVYA RASTOGI Hi my name is Kavya Rastogi. I prefer traditional medias, like pencil, ink and acrylic paint, but I’ve also recently started experimenting with digital art. I like to draw inspiration from my experiences, as well as the ideas and cultures I observe around me on a daily basis. Art allows me to express my emotions in a creative and fulfilling way. I’ve been doing it since I was a child, and it’s one of my favourite ways to relax.

JAYN SAY Hi! I’m Jacyn and this is my third year in Epiphany visual art.

I’ve been doing art since I could write and it has always been one of my favorite hobbies and a way for me to express my vision for everyone to see.

My art style focuses around abstract realism and my go to medium is usually oil paints. However, I’ve recently been trying to explore digital art and animation. My showcase piece is inspired by my surroundings and personal experiences.

MAX SHU Hi! I’m Max, and I’ve been doing art for who knows how long, but this is my first time joining Epiphany. I really enjoy creating fantastical pieces using traditional mediums such as pencil, pen, water color, acrylics and more! I really like experimenting with perspective, and recently I’ve been trying to interpret what I see in real life differently and with my showcase, I want to do just that. I want to show the differences between my outer representation of myself in contrast to what goes on behind the scenes.

LENKA SMILJANIĆ Hii everyone, I am Lenka! Art has been a part of my life for a long time, not only as a hobby but also as a subject in school. However, this is my first year in Epiphany and I am very excited to see what it has in store for me. I mainly use traditional mediums, such as oil paint, acrylics, but also other forms of traditional mediums, like sculpting, pencil and ink drawings, and watercolour. For the showcase artwork, I wanted to experiment with something new to me, which is mosaics. I am trying to take a somewhat abstract approach to landscape art and experiment with different mediums. I want to share the message of how broken pieces can make beautiful artworks.

ISABELLA STIGNOR Hi, my name is Isabella, a Grade 11 first year epiphany member. My love for art started at a young age, I took art all throughout primary and secondary school. There is something so therapeutic about putting paint on a canvas and making it into something, a sensation hard to replicate in any other course. Through my years as a developing artist I had the privilege to try out many different mediums of art. I've come to like sculpting, oil painting and sketching the best. I lean more towards realism art, as shown in my showcased submission. My piece is based on a photo I took two years ago during a road trip in South Africa. Photos are the only thing that connects me to what life was before covid. I focused solely on the fruit bowl, to show the simplicity that art can be.

FFLUR STUPPLER Hi! My name is Fflur. I’ve been drawing with either graphite or coloured pencils for a couple of years now, and over the summer I started painting with acrylic paint as well. As I normally draw portraits, I usually get my inspiration from the people who surround me on a daily basis, either those I see in person or online. However, with my paintings, I’ve been more drawn to landscapes, and so find myself taking inspiration from places I’ve visited in the past, or wish to travel to in the future. I’ve really enjoyed expanding the range of mediums I use, and I’m looking forward to experimenting with different art styles and growing as an artist. My showcase piece this year is a portrait, created with pencils and pastels.

HINA SUGANO Hello, my name is Hina. First of all, I don't draw. Instead, I create origami. It's basically just folding a square sheet of paper, but it's a very interesting creation because of the different ways and multiple layers to fold a paper. I have been involved in origami since I was in kindergarten, but I still have to practice many times to fold a difficult piece of paper neatly. My showcase submissions are 3D Origami animals.

JIACHENG (MICHAEL) SUN Hello! I am Michael, currently in Grade 11.

I developed my interest in painting back in elementary. The first art type I practiced was Chinese traditional art which I used mediums like water-based black inks and color pigments. I have been in love with art since then. Then I moved out of China where I got to know more about western art styles. I practiced oil painting, acrylic, sketching, and watercolor.

QITING (IVY) XIAO Hi, I’m Ivy:). I have been doing art since I was in Middle School - for about 5 years now. I usually work with traditional mediums like pencil and watercolor but have been experimenting with digital art & oil paint recently! To me, art is a form of expression and I draw inspiration from the concepts and ideas that I want to convey to others. My showcase piece is about light and our never-ending yearning towards it.

WEIJIE XU Hi, I am Weijie. I am still a beginner at art. I do a lot of ink drawings with brushes. I also like digit drawings and pencil drawings as well. I study Renaissance artists and Japanese mangas. For me, I focus a lot on the movement of the drawing and the beauty it expresses.

GRADE 10 JAN 2022

SARAH AHMED Hi! I’m Sarah, the Co-Executive Head for Epiphany 20212022, and also a member of the Visual Arts department. My favourite medium is acrylics, although recently I have experimented with other paints and also enjoy using oils and watercolour. I have been doing art since I was a small kid, and have always enjoyed it very much. I am usually inspired by the environment(landscapes or creatures), and also characters/shows. My showcase submission is what I created in the 10-hour art mock exam this year, with the theme “event.” I explored the topic of Nostalgia and painted 5 wood pieces, with each representing a significant memory/symbol when I lived in Canada for the first four years of my life. The paintings hang on a baby mobile, to connect to the idea of youth as the moments are from when I was a baby.

AANYA AGRAWAL Hi, my name is Aanya. My preferred mediums to use are watercolors, charcoal, and pencil for traditional art, though I also like graphic design. I usually like drawing flora or fauna but I've started trying to branch out into portraits. Art is something I really enjoy because it feels very calming and allows me to express myself creatively. My showcase submission was from the IGCSE art mock exam, and it is meant to express the situation of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

AMULYA AVANTHSA Hi, I’m Amulya. This is my first year in Epiphany. I would call myself an artist in progress – I have so much to learn. I have been doing art from a very young age and would like to take it forward as a career. I grew up doing a lot of traditional artwork with paints and a canvas but I have always wanted to try more such as fashion. Doing GCSE Art has helped me be independent and steer my own imaginations and creative processes. Lately, I love the aesthetic of Renaissance artwork and Medieval concepts and events. So, I am depicting the idea of power, kingship and the dark side of it. I recently got into using oil pastels and hence am incorporating it into my artwork.

SAANVI BAHADUR Hi! I’m Saanvi and I’m in Grade 10 this year. I’ve always enjoyed art because it’s a great creative way to express myself and my opinions. I love learning about art history and how art differs in various cultures. I enjoy using oil paints, but I’ve begun experimenting with different mediums like acrylic, charcoal and pastel.

OUDE CHEN Hi! This is Oude, and I am a painter(and designer as well sometimes). I have been in the epiphany visual art department for a year already. For me, I prefer to use watercolour and digital, but often I may also handle a mix in different media. This time, my work is about a journey in a forest; it is about a man (the character) falling back into his memory and appearing to be in this mysterious forest.

This piece is inspired by several aspects of my life, for instance, memories, personal journeys, and dreams.

ANNA DONALDSON Hi, I’m Anna. I am in Grade 10 and this is my first year of being a part of Epiphany. I’ve been doing art since I was a kid, but I’ve focused a lot more on art in the past 2 years as I take art as a GCSE class. I like working with pencils, watercolors, and have recently begun exploring oil paint. I like to draw/paint in a realistic style. I have experimented with rendering the faces of loved ones through paint and it is something that I want to continue exploring. My showcase submission is an oil painting depicting a childhood picture of my Grandma and I.

HANA FAROOQI Hi, I’m Hana :) This is my second year now in Epiphany. My preferred medium is definitely watercolor or acrylics, but I do sculpt in 3D often. I have been doing art since I was very little, and take GCSE art with high hopes for HL IB art next year. My submission piece is my acrylic painting named ‘Reminiscing’ which I made for Mocks this year. Although this piece may not be my favourite, the concept really made it for me. Expressing the feelings of acceptance and moving on through a fond and positive outlook instead of dwelling on the “what’s ifs”.

YSABEL "YZZIE" FLEET Hi, I’m Yzzie, a first year Epiphany member in Grade 10. I usually work with color pencils, watercolor, and polymer clay. I’ve been practicing art since I was a kid. I often do either contemporary or realistic art. My showcase submission focuses on cultural identity—specifically the suppression of cultural identity. I’ve tried to represent this, through a plainly decorated shadow box, which is filled with paintings inspired by traditional textiles and miniature clay replicas of food from Filipino culture.

MAYA GHAI Hi, I’m Maya, I’m a Grade 10 GCSE art student and this is my first year in Epiphany. I’ve been doing art since I was a kid, and have always been inspired by things around me, my passions and other artists. I tend to use acrylic paints in a realistic style as that is a medium I’m most comfortable with, however I have recently experimented with different mediums such as chalk and charcoal, digital art, and oil paints and I have really enjoyed using them.

EMMA GOH I’m Emma, I am in 10th grade and this is my second year in Epiphany. I used to mainly focus on more traditional art styles such as watercolour and sketching but I now do a lot of digital landscape pieces. Some key components I like to include are trees, flowers, grass, bridges, outdoor lights. My submission was my final project for the mocks exam and depicts three animations of overlooked aspects of our daily life.

PONAREAY ALISE HENG Hi, I’m Alise, second year in Epiphany, and my main medium is digital art. I usually use Procreate on the IPad Pro, though I’ve recently been experimenting on Photoshop. My niche is illustration with touches of surrealism; specifically fantasy-esque artwork. I’ve done art leisurely since I was young, but I've only started taking it seriously in 5th grade, about 4-5 years ago. My showcase submission this year is this digital piece from Procreate, which focuses on otherworldly beings, of which are inspired

by Greek gods and the works of Pete Mohrbacher. The piece is of an overarching figure that is my own personification of hopelessness.

KAIRA KARMAKAR Hi, I am Kaira, a member of the Epiphany Visual Arts '21-'22.

Art has been a part of my identity since I was a toddler, and now after pursuing this passion, I have gained more experience and knowledge. I use traditional media such as acrylics, watercolor, oil, and charcoal and prefer realism art.

In addition, I make still-life art, landscapes, and portraits by drawing inspiration from my culture, nature, people I meet, and more. I enjoy expressing myself through my artwork because it helps me relax and explore my creativity. For my showcase submission, with the theme 'event,' I painted a Kathak dance performance with a touch of surrealism and abstract art. I want to show my identity through a cherished, cultural, and memorable event in my artwork. I aimed to showcase movement through the dresses because I believe that Kathak is a moving and expressive dance.

GIA KARUNAKARAN Hello! My name is Gia and this is my first year in epiphany. I have enjoyed doodling ever since I was old enough to hold a pen, but I only truly started to pursue art at the start of quarantine. I started out using more traditional mediums, such as pencil, charcoal and paper, but I quickly found that this wasn't for me and moved on to digital art. Since then I have been using procreate to draw anime inspired characters.

DOROTHY LEE Hi ! My name is Dorothy, I’m in grade 10, and this is my first year joining epiphany. I always found art to be a way of stress relief, as I pursued it since young. Although I stopped in the middle for a while due to academic pressures, I wanted to start again through epiphany, and it’s been a lot of fun. I don’t really have a specific preference, but I mostly do sketches with pencil/pen, or just watercolor pencils.

MAYUMI LUMB Hi! I’m Mayumi, and this is my first year doing Epiphany. I’ve enjoyed art since I was younger, and I’m in Grade 10. I’m very comfortable with watercolours, and I find myself doing art more realistically. My submission was the piece I did for mocks, and although it is not the best piece I have done, I found it fun as it was a step out of my comfort zone. I used brighter colours and abstract features, and tried oil, a medium I have not had much experience with. This work was my take on daily life, and explored the idea of simplicity.

YUHAN (TINA) MA Hi! I’m Tina, the secretary of Epiphany 2021-2022 and a member of the Visual Arts department. I use traditional media such as oil painting more often but I’m also exploring digital art and mixed media. A topic that always inspires me is “Identity”, from several aspects such as ‘culture’ or ‘memories’.

ANOUSHKA MATHEW Hi, I’m Anoushka, my favourite mediums to use are pen and pencil and I especially like drawing people.

NOEMIE PICARD My name is Noemie. I enjoy making surrealist pieces with watercolour, ink or pen. I have also started exploring animation on Procreate which is something I enjoy. Recently, I’ve been working with watercolour, more specifically with portraits. I try to incorporate as many watercolour techniques as I can to create texture and feeling.

WENJUN (JACK) QUE Hi! My name is Jack from grade 10, and this is my first year of Epiphany. I’ve been doing art for a long time, ever since the doodles back in primary, and over the years I’ve been on and off of the proactive side of visual arts, but the interest towards visual arts has never left me. Art inspired me through both the beauty achievable via visual effects and the ability to convey your ideals and beliefs through art pieces. Wanting to achieve that level of information conveyance pushed me onwards. Most of my experiences of art is based in traditional tools eg. pencil sketches and painting, though I started to learn all the new media such as on the digital side. My favorite genre is Sci-fi, with styles ranging from heavily realistic to my newer experiments in more simplistic and exaggerated style such as anime.

MEGHA RAGHURAMAN Hi I’m Megha, I’m in Grade 10 and this is my first year in Epiphany. I have been doing art ever since I can draw and my preferred medium to work with are digital media and traditional media. I used to always do art with traditional media like painting and pencil drawing but recently, I have been attracted to digital media since it is an amazing platform to use. My showcase submission is a drawing that involves the use of mandala/zentangle. Mandala is an art form that is created using the combination of simple & structured geometric designs or patterns.

VANESSA SAEZ GARCIA Hey! I am Vanessa and this is my first year participating in the visual art department in Epiphany. I've always enjoyed expressing myself creatively and found fascinating how one can convey thoughts nonverbally.

I like to turn to art for answers, so I like using concepts and ideas when working on art pieces, rather than looking at what looks appealing to me. In my showcase I hope to achieve that.

JIAH SHIN Hello, I’m Jiah! I’m a Grade 10 student, and this is my second year in Epiphany. I prefer pen and pencil to all other mediums, and I usually work with realism (mainly still life) or more anime-style art. My submission this year is almost entirely made of color pencils and celebrates the Year of the Tiger.

GABRIELLA WAUGH Hi my name is Gaby and this is my first year in Epiphany. I am in Grade 10, and am doing art at GCSE level, and am enjoying it a lot. My showcase piece follows the idea of female oppression, and reclaiming historical symbols of oppression, the corset and crinoline. I created the bodice with vintage posters from the 90s to show different types of female empowerment through the ages.

ZHIYU (ZOE) ZHANG Hi! I’m Zoe and this is my first year taking part in Epiphany!

I’m really excited about this first journey of mine and about exploring my style of art further. My favourite type of art is traditional visual art which includes watercolor and black and white images. I have also been working on digital art these days and I really like it. I’ve never had art lessons other than in school but art still makes up a big part of me.

I have liked doing art in my free time since grade 4, when I realised I am very committed to art. Therefore, I started taking art more seriously. I like art because I can express myself through it while releasing stress, and sometimes, ideas just come endlessly to my mind, which I really enjoy.

My showcase this year was inspired by a movie that I really like- Alice in wonderland and I hope you all enjoy it.

YANA ARTSIOMENKA Hi! My name is yana, I'm in grade 9 and this is my first year participating in Epiphany. I’ve been doing art since I was very young. However, I stopped for sometime but I decided to commence my new art journey by joining the epiphany several years later. I’m most comfortable with my cartoon style but I also like to sketch still life and animals. I started to feel passionate for art around the start of middle school when I discovered that visual art was a creative output for my ideas.Through my artwork, I hope some aspects of my ideas are shown and mixed with your own imagination to create something that will be meaningful to you and me.

ABENA HYUNSEO GWAK Hi, I’m Abena, and this is my first year involved with Epiphany! I’ve had a strong passion for art ever since I was able to pick up a crayon, and I’m thrilled at this opportunity to showcase my work. Although I usually work by pencil or pen, I wanted to try out a full-fledged painting; this one filled with memories of my mom. I miss her a lot of the time, so being able to paint things that reminded me of her was both therapeutic and greatly frustrating. Paint is an absolute pain. However, in the end, I had a lot of fun, and I’m excited to learn and create more.

SEOWON (LUCY) HONG I am Lucy, and I have been doing art from a young age. I am most comfortable with oil painting, but these days I try to experiment with different mediums. The styles I like are usually expressionism or abstract but I also like others. My showcase submission is about 'growth' and 'coming of age'. YEWON (LINDSAY) KWON Hi, I’m Lindsey. This is my first year joining Epiphany. I mainly draw digitally and prefer to use them. I like to draw people and express my creativity by drawing them. I like to draw whatever I prefer to draw, and I like art because there is no answer for it. I’ve been doing digital art for three years as a hobby. For this showcase, I am trying to create an artwork that shows a person and an object drawn together with pencil and pen. The artwork was inspired by the music I listen to, and I wanted to express ‘aloneness’ and ‘incompleteness’.

JIAWEI (EMMA) LI Hello, I’m Emma :)) I love doing paintings of landscapes and my favorite media is acrylic, however I also enjoy working with oil pastels and coloured markers. My pieces are usually a mixture of bright and vibrant colours, and I experiment new colour combinations everytime I start a new piece. I have been drawing in a sketchbook since I was a kid and my inspiration comes from everywhere around me. I draw and paint those things that are interesting and stand out to me on paper in my own style. My showcase piece this year is a landscape painting exploring the combination of colours with bright intensities.

JIAYI (CHRISTINA) LI Hi!! I’m Christina. I like doing traditional art on paper, such as drawing in pencil and painting in acrylics. I like drawing in a realistic style, but I also enjoy expressing my ideas in an abstract way. The things that inspire me are the artworks I see online or from people around me, and also just random things that I am interested in or are passionate about. MEHER NARANG Hi, My name is Meher and this is my first year in epiphany. I have been doodling everywhere ever since primary school.

My favorite things to draw are people, clothes and food. I have experimented with different mediums but nothing beats a graphite pencil for me. I use alcohol markers and watercolors a lot too. However, I am really getting into procreate and digital art :)) This year, my showcase piece is about the perception of beauty.

PAIGE LOK I’m Paige. My favourite mediums to work in are watercolour and ink drawings. I generally tend to use sketching, more rough styles that aren’t necessarily hyperrealistic, but more expressive. While I’ve always loved art, I only started to seriously pursue it outside of school during middle school. My art revolves heavily around my memories and life experiences. Whether it’s the places I’ve been, or little trinkets from friends, I think that commemorating those memories helps me to appreciate life more. My showcase piece, titled ‘souvenirs’ references the photos from my travels, converted into my art style.

Ahaana Mahapatra As someone who has grown up with dance ever since I was 4, dance has always been a big part of who I am and how I express myself. I generally like exploring more urban & hip-hop styles of dance and I usually find inspiration through music and how I feel. Dance is a mode of communication and expression for me and so channeling that through my submission piece is my end goal.

Tebo Nicholson

Dance has been something that has been in my life since I was in primary school, over the years I have grown and broadened my range of skill across many styles including Hip Hop, contemp, Jazz, locking and popping. In recent years I have participated in many competitions, choreographed many pieces and am now producing my first show. My showcase this year is a piece I did a while ago, exploring a relatively new style for me, incorporating my foundations in Hip hop with contemporary stylistic features. Hope you enjoy it!

Tiara Jain In middle school I started taking casual open classes for the style Hiphop occasionally. This interest sprouted quite casually as a form of entertainment for me. From then I branched out into trying variations of hip-hop like girls style, jazz funk and street jazz over the following years. However, over this past summer I started taking classes and courses in the dance style Heels which I am really enjoying. Being a part of dance productions is always fun and teaches me different skills that I would need in the future. Furthermore, apart from only dancing in productions, recently I have been honoured to choreograph dances for UN night 2021 and dance show 2022 which are new experiences for me. My piece for the showcase is a duet which takes elements of the styles contemporary, jazz and urban and fuses them together. Hope you like it :)

Miharu Yamakawa

I dance sometimes, the first time was for UN night in 2019, from there, I've participated in many school dance performances, and choreographed China 2 years later. I don't have a specific style, but I prefer contemp. I really enjoy being able to perform and continue experiencing my favourite aspects of gymnastics even after I stopped the sport. My friends who also dance and the challenges I face inspire me to dance more. Although I haven't specifically danced for very long, I have been doing other sports such as kungfu, gymnastics for a very long time, which help me with a lot of features of dance.

Kaira Mittal

My name is Kaira Mittal. I've been dancing since I was three and have always had a passion for performance. I’ve mainly done hiphop but I enjoy doing and watching dances of other genres even if I haven’t trained in them. I’ve always loved dance but it recently became a really big part of my life as I started participating in more showcases and going to open classes. I’ve been working to develop my choreographing skills and even if they aren’t to the highest level yet, this piece still showcases how my understanding of music and movement has developed along with my love for dance.

Sarah Morrow

I have been dancing since I can remember. For me dance is a way to get away from reality. When I am on the dance floor its just me and the music. From the age of 7-12 I was a competitive figure skater and apart of my training was taking ballet classes. From there I joined musical theatre, jazz and contemporary. I love getting inspiration from other dancers and YouTube videos. Being in IGCSE dance it allowed me to work with peers on different styles and explore creative movements. I thoroughly enjoy participating in the Art events such as UN Night, Theatre Productions and Dance Productions.

Saiyuri Suresh I have always had a passion for dance. I enjoy all forms of dance, mainly Bollywood and Hip-Hop. I like working with various stimuli and enjoy hands-on experience learning. This year, my showcase is a spoken word piece in collaboration with Krisha Bhai. The piece is called “Moment of Tangency: A Glimpse of What Might Have Been”.

This piece expresses the infinite possibilities that exist yet we do not experience. Krisha and I use various dance techniques to express the people and opportunities that we miss out on simply due to destiny and chance. This piece also showcases a person's longing for something different and longing to experience what might have been. I would like to thank the heads of Epiphany for all the hardwork they have put into bringing the showcase together and making this possible.

Krisha Bhai

I have always enjoyed dancing, especially Hip-Hop and Bollywood. I like to constantly challenge myself, which is why my showcase piece this year uses spoken word as the stimulus instead of a song. The spoken word is called “Moment of Tangency: A Glimpse of What Might Have Been. This piece explores the impact of one seemingly small decision on the entire trajectory of one’s life. It does this by focusing on two people who both long to meet someone but keep missing their chance. This piece is in collaboration with Saiyuri Suresh.

We explore innovative dance techniques that push the boundaries and surprise the audience. I hope you enjoy our piece and reflect on what could have been in your own lives.

Rina Horie Dance to me is not just about moving to the rhythm of a piece of music. It’s about expressionism, communication, freedom. It is there for me to feel as if I’m in a completely different world than everyone else where it’s just me, the music and the floor. Dance has always been a very big part of my life, and it always will be. I’ve always stuck with classical ballet, so recently I have been trying out new styles such as contemporary. Through UN night, I also got the opportunity to choreograph a dance for Japan in a style I have never done before.

This pushed me both as a dancer and as a person to go out of my comfort zone, and helped me to improve in my leadership skills.

Ruri Aoki

I have been dancing since I was 5 years old. My main styles of dance are ballet and contemporary, but I prefer contemporary as it is more flexible in the way that it allows me to dance as I like. Dance productions in school such as UN night and Dance Show have been insightful and challenged me physically and mentally, allowing me to explore dance further. I usually choose a song before I start choreographing, and am therefore inspired by the lyrics and melody of the songs. But in some cases, my environment can be a source of stimuli. Choreographing allows me to explore movements through dance and express ideas or emotions through a new lens.

Vivienne Ishida Dance to me is an outlet to freely express myself and communicate my emotions to others. From a young age I have always enjoyed performing, and dance helped make this clear to me. As I have gotten older I have tried to expand my comfort zone when it comes to dance. Exploring as many styles as I can with the help of collaborating with my peers. This has helped me to gain a better sense of not only who I am as a dancer, but who I am as a person. As I begin choreographing, I find new challenges in dance I have not faced before. And like any other art form, dance is a struggle. It is a love-hate relationship. A strive for perfection where all possible. But the more I explore dance, the more confident I become in myself.

George Xia I'm George and I am in grade 11. I’ve been playing the piano for over 12 years now and have really enjoyed it. I’ve always enjoyed seeing others perform and see the piano as a way to express your emotions. I’ve always enjoyed J-pop and anime, thus often I would play anime pieces for fun. I also really enjoy pieces from the romantic period as there is often more usage of dynamics and articulations compared to other periods of pieces. Often romantic period pieces also allow the performer to have more freedom of choice of how the piece should be played.

The piece I will be playing for this years showcase is Guren no Yumiya from the anime series ‘Attack on Titan’.

Hugo Kemp Hi my name's Hugo, I've been playing music all my life starting with piano when I was six, then flute when I was 8 and I picked up Sax later when I turned 12. My music taste is ever changing but I moved away from piano and flute, at the moment I’m really into jazz and rock, and I play in the school senior jazz band and in a band with my friends where we play a range of rock and punk. My showcase is a jazz piece played on my sax with Mr Tranter accompanying. It is a grade 6 piece but I do think I could do better as I got a distinction on my grade 5 exam at the start of this year.

Dylan Evangelista Hey I’m Dylan and I’m in 10th Grade. I started becoming interested in creating music when I was around 12 years old. I primarily play guitar but I know my way around other instruments like the drums and bass.

I’m in a band with my friends and we play a range of rock music, covering bands like Modern Baseball and Car Seat Headrest. For my showcase submission, I’ve created my own rendition of girl in red’s song “we fell in love in october”, with an original instrumental mostly performed and arranged by me.

Gian Ghai I am Gian and I am in grade 12. I’ve been playing guitar for 3 years (since grade 9) and started learning about music when I was in Grade 3 (for 9 years) when I began playing tuba, although I only began taking it seriously when I picked up the guitar. I like mainly playing in the styles of rock, with my favorite bands being Van Halen, Rush, King’s X, Foo Fighters and Soundgarden.

Melody Phyu Sin Hello, my name is Melody, and I’m currently in grade 9. I’ve been playing the piano for 9 years, as well as the viola and the guitar.

I don’t have any specific genre I like, my tastes sway from season to season. As of now, I very much enjoy alt/r&b, as well as J-pop and osts. I also really like classical music. My favorite composers include Rachminoff and Chopin, albeit I’m pretty sure it will change in a few months time.

For this year’s showcase, I’m playing ‘The Fading Stories’, a Genshin ost

by Yu-Peng Chen. This song is played at night in a village named Qingce, where the old and the children are left behind, as the rest leave to go to the city. It paints the quietness of this village, though behind it you sense the homesickness and loss of the old slowly fading away.

Meher Narang Hi, my name is Meher and this is my first year in epiphany (music). I have been singing for over 5 years and have experimented with many different forms of singing. Over the years I have been a part of many different choirs and musicals.

I also love listening to various genres of music such as indie pop, pop and others :))) For my showcase piece I have sung one of my favorite songs by taylor swift which has such a deep meaning .

Euan Wang Hello my name is Euan. I am in grade 9 and have been playing the cello for about 6 years. I am really into rap and pop, but at the same time, I also really enjoy classical music. I do like quite a variety of music genres!

More specifically, I most enjoy classical music from the romantic era because I find it very expressive and overall, very moving.

Frank Zhang

Roughly eleven years have passed since I first picked up a pair of drumsticks. As a second-year member in Epiphany Music, I’ve had a lot of fun using my drumming skills to play songs of various styles, and I hope I can continue to do so in the future. In this year’s showcase, I’ve chosen a piece from my current favourite VTuber band HIMEHINA called “Resistance!”. The song is about being resilient and believing in the best outcome when facing challenging situations, and I feel like it is quite relevant to our lives now under the pandemic. It’s important to stay positive and stay strong during this difficult time.

Anika Gupta It's been around 10 years since the first time that I picked up an instrument and it was a magical moment that I’ll never forget. Since then I've tried many different things and have had varied interests but music is something so flexible that it never fails to suit my needs. As for genres, I tend to listen to a lot of band style music, as a drum player, because it gives me a lot of inspiration and I can learn a lot of new things by listening to other people play. However, I tend to play a wide variety of pieces, from jazz to latin and even reggae. For this showcase, I chose an older piece that I learned about a year ago. I really like the style and the way that it challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone with music and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Anya Gupta I have been playing the piano for around 11 years now. I have always loved playing the piano as a way to express myself, as well as to enjoy the music of my favourite composers. I started with playing mostly classical and romantic pieces, and over time branching out into more contemporary styles. Although I retain my love for the romantic period, in particular the work of composers such as Chopin and Tchaikovsky, I really enjoy listening to and playing jazz. For this year's showcase, I am performing Helen Hopekirk's Air, a lyrical piece in the Romantic style.

Mannat Bhasin Hi, my name is Mannat, and I’m in grade 10. It’s been about 10 years since I started playing the piano, and no, it wasn’t a magical feeling where I was entranced by playing songs or something that I really looked forward to doing after school. Honestly, I was sorta pushed into it by my parents like the majority of my fellow Asians. Playing the piano hasn’t been something that was straightforward to me, even now, I have my ups and downs. I decided to join epiphany because I wanted to steer away from constantly playing the classical exam pieces that would genuinely bore me, and actually have fun. I even decided to try to compose, and was inspired mainly by Ludovico Gusto, but I still want to continue exploring other genres of music such as pop or jazz.

Myles Chesser Bonjour fellow music connoisseurs! My name is Myles Chesser and I specialise as a Violinist, Double Bassist and a Bass Guitarist. I’ve been learning violin the longest (11 years) but have yearned for musical greatness since I was born. I am currently attempting to speedrun becoming a bass guitar virtuoso, since I’ve only been learning it seriously for about 6 months. However I’ve found it’s actually the instrument I’m most passionate about.

Over the past 6 months I have also fallen in love with funk which has definitely fuelled my bass guitar ambitions. With funk idols of the likes of Joe Dart from Vulfpeck.

Shin Aye Hi, my name is Shin Aye, I’m a junior and this is my first year in Epiphany.

I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I learned to play the guitar through self taught when I was about 12 years old and since then I have been doing covers and writing my own songs. I believe it’s a form of therapy and i feel at peace while doing so. I write about my life experiences and sometimes about others. I want people to relate to my music and enjoy it as their own. GCSE music has helped me explore deeper into it. Although I am not taking music in IB, it is no doubt still my most favorite hobby to grab my guitar and create music. My favorite genres are pop rock and maybe a bit of jazz.I am currently learning how to play piano.

Nathan Morrow Hello there, my name is Nathan Morrow and I have been playing the cello for 4 years and the guitar for 1. I enjoy playing all types of genres of music but I especially enjoy rock and blues. I am entranced by the way Van Halen plays the guitar and by the licks that Jimmy Hendrix creates. I also quite enjoy playing pieces by John Williams and Hans Zimmer.

Andy (Yiheng) Li I have been an avid pianist and musician since I was 7 years old. The world of classical music deeply fascinates me, such as music from the classical era, romantic and 20th century French impressionism.

I am also deeply interested in composing music, especially in classical forms. I usually work with an orchestral template but occasionally I will compose a solo piece for the piano (given that is my instrument). I think that epiphany provides a great platform in which musicians from all walks of genres can meet and cooperate, serving as a great source of inspiration.

Though I am not a fan of popular music, I have a soft spot for J-pop, which explains my ‘exclusively-classical’ repertoire I play. Some would say I live in the past in terms of music taste, but we all have our own favorites. A couple of my favorite composers are Ravel, Chopin and Kasputin, Ravel being the peak of music in my opinion. So for this year’s showcase, I will be performing a piece I prepared for a recital at a music festival very recently: Ravel’s Sonatine 3rd movement “Animé” The rapid toccata movement of Ravel’s sonata that serves as a brilliant finale to his suite.

Zahara Slovenski Hi! I’m Zahara, a member of Epiphany Film and Theatre :) I am doing Film in the IB and am inspired by tons of cool filmmakers, but my favourite director is Greta Gerwig. I’m a big fan of animation, especially as a way of tying Visual Arts and Film together. My showcase submission is a short animation of one of my friends who does dance, and I really wanted to portray her emotions and movements through colour and line. I hand drew each frame digitally on Procreate and compiled it on Premiere pro.

Seoyeon (Lauren) Kim

Hello, I’m Seoyeon, a first year Epiphany Film & Theatre member. As I take IB Film, I thought Epiphany would be a nice platform for me to expand my interests. Ever since I was young, I enjoyed movies and other forms of film. That’s how I naturally developed interest also in making films and other aspects in this area. I like to explore different types of genres and styles and think film can be a very distinct, yet accessible way of communicating depending on its genre. In this year’s showcase I would like to be able to communicate a message through various film elements and show how combined, these elements create meaning and message.

Xiaoyao Lu Hello! I am Xiaoyao, (sometimes referred to as Marcus) an IGCSE Drama student and a first year member of Epiphany F&T. It’s only been two years since Drama moved from my least favorite subject to my most favorite one, so I came here to learn from and work with my much more experienced peers. Currently, I am working on bringing a play I wrote a while ago - 2069 - alive. Looking forward to having y’all see it!

Dhriti Sircar Hi! My name is Dhriti, I am a second year member of epiphany. I am currently an IGCSE Drama student. I have enjoyed theatre ever since my first drama lesson in the sixth grade. I enjoy acting, and like working with others to make dynamic and enjoyable pieces, whether it's a script or a performance. I enjoy various genres, but I specifically like abstract pieces that carry real-world meaning. My showcase submission is as such. I am Acting in -2069- by Marcus, a fellow member. It is an abstract piece that is relevant to the real world, and I am delighted to have brought the piece to life.

Tsz Kei (Jasmine) Mok Hello, I’m Jasmine and this is my first year in Epiphany Film and Theatre. I’ve always been interested in film and I love to create films of my own. As I’m now taking IB Film, I thought Epiphany Film would be a nice place to share my films with people who also enjoy films like I do. I’m so excited to work with more people and continue sharing films with others.

Srishti Saha Hi, I’m Srishti, head of theatre and in my second year with Epiphany. I got into acting a couple of years ago, and have since used theatre as a way to both let out stress and have fun. I’m particularly drawn to melodrama and tragedy in plays, both of which feature in my showcase submission. I’m currently working with some other members of our department to bring Marcus’s play - 2069 - to life. I hope to be able to spread messages through my works and inspire others to do the same.

Sukriti Prasad Hi, I’m Sukriti and this is my second year in the film and theatre department in Epiphany. This year for my submission I have tried my hand at making a short vlog to the national gallery. As someone who has always loved art, I thought it was the perfect place to go and film a day surrounded by creativity and perspective. This is my first time attempting something of the sort and I hope to have encapsulated the essence of the place in a somewhat proficient manner. I look forward to pursuing more opportunities to enhance my skills, and hope you enjoy watching!

Yoon Jee (Kelly) Kim This is my first year in the epiphany film and theatre department. At first I joined because I was interested in the lightings on stage, and I hope to learn more technical skills! However, this time was a part of the film production as an actor on stage. The process of creating the short production was both a new experience and a chance to get to interact with other members of the group.Looking forward, I would like to learn the little tips, tricks, and details on stage in terms of mood, lighting, and intent.

Zixi (Victor) Tian My name is Victor and I am a IB film student, this is my second year in Epiphany film and Theatre. I love making short movies as well as making special effects in my free time. The most prideful thing I have done so far is that my friends and I have made a short film about the desire to travel. I’m glad to be a member of Epiphany where I can share my film works and appreciate the amazing works of other people.

Lucy Wu Hi, I’m Lucy and this is my second year in Epiphany. I’m currently an IB theatre student and at the same time involved in multiple film & theatre productions as an actor. At the same time, I’m a big fan of photography, I don’t have a particular style that I prefer as I often like to explore different genres. For this year’s submission, along with a few others, we have created a short film about the desire to travel.

Hana Khan Hi, I’m Hana! I’m an IB theatre student and this is my second year as an Epiphany Film and Theatre member. I’ve always enjoyed exploring the many ways in which performers express meaning through different techniques in acting. For my submission, I decided to create an infographic that provides insight into Balinese Topeng Theatre.

Serena Bernasconi My name is Serena Bernasconi and this is my first year in epiphany theater! I am excited to be a part of this as I think that theater is a great way to bond with your peers and show your emotions through acting. I decided to showcase my monologue of a family seeking clouser after a terrorist attack that has taken away thousands including members of their family. I am excited to see what epiphany theater has to bring to the future!

Benji Xu I’m Benji, the head of epiphany film and theater. I've been studying filmmaking for 4 years. I’m particularly passionate about editing and one of my submissions is a compilation remix of almost all Marvel movies. I'm also proud of Far From Home, a film we made about the desire to travel.
