n 1929, Rev. George H. Thompson, along with seven ministers from Zion Watch, Olive Branch, New Bethel and Morning Star churches organized a council who were interested in providing a place of worship for people in the Memphis Heights Community. The first location of the church was in the home of Bro. and Sis. Jim Smith on the north corner of Quaker Street. The first members were: Rev. & Mrs. George H. Thompson, pastor & wife, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Smith, Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Taylor, Mrs. Beatrice Ford,

Mrs. Viola Riggins and Bro. Silas B. & Sis. Vera Lynn Thompson. Bro. A.L. Taylor and Bro. Jim Smith were the first Deacons and Sis. Harrietta S. Thompson was the first president of the Missionary Society. With the increase of membership, it was necessary for the church to relocate. A former garage on the 1200 block of East Hillsboro Street became the new church home. In 1932, Rev. John Russ became pastor. In 1933, Rev. A. C. Wilcher became pastor. Under his leadership a Sunday

— Church History Continued — School established and the church moved to 1300 East Hillsboro Street. In 1934, for a few months Rev. B. R. Riley was pastor, then Rev. W. J. Allen became pastor. The Church was forced to move to a new location. Therefore, In 1935, the church moved to a Brush Arbor on the corner of Burnside Street and Florence Avenue. In 1937, a new Church Building was completed, and in addition to the Missionary Society and Sunday School, a Choir and the Baptist Training Union was formed. In 1938, Rev. M.L. Youngblood served as pastor for a short term until 1939, when Rev. W. J. Allen returned

and served as pastor another eight years. In 1947, Rev. J.I. Thomas became pastor, then In 1948 Rev. W.M. Mullins served. In 1949, the Rev. Thomas O. McJunkins became pastor. He served for the next fourteen years. Under his the leadership the church was given the name: FIRST SAINT JAMES MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH. In 1963, Rev. Dr. L. D. Champion became pastor. He served for seventeen years. Under his leadership the church purchased a building at 523 Hawthorne Avenue and a parking lot across the street. The church moved to the new building and

— Church History Continued — its current location in the year 1972. Rev. R. C. Carter became pastor in 1980. In 1983, the Rev. Dr. Talmage L. Dunwood began his term as pastor. He served for the next twenty – three years. Under his leadership a new Sanctuary was completed in the year 1985, and the church was blessed with three lots and two houses given by Mr. & Mrs. Scott. The Mortgage Burning dedication service was in the 1999. A van was purchased and several other purchases were made to enhance the churches goals. In 2006, Rev. Roy C. Aaron became pastor and he has served for

— Church History Continued — thirteen years. Under his leadership, in the year 2008, the church purchased a new van. The fellowship hall, kitchen, and sanctuary were all renovated. In the

year 2010, the current church building was completed. We are grateful for the many blessings God has granted us over these 90 years. To God be the Glory for all he has done for our dear old First Saint James.
